How to devide disks in different pools etc. And the disability to mix and match drive sizes. But that is not possible on most systems anyway. **What problems is TrueNAS solving and how is that benefiting you?** I reused an older NAS enclosure (8 bays) with a new motherboard and a new HBA to put it back into life. This gave me the great enclosure (with dual PSU) and also the better performance required for my new needs. ### 2. Of course no single store of data is sufficient and backups should always be taken and regularly tested, but ZFS provides a fantastic primary data store and gives features such as scrubs, snapshots, hot spares and ZFS send which can help with increasing the resiliency. **What do you dislike about TrueNAS?** Expanding storage requires adding enough drives to create a new vdev, which can be expensive for small scale users. There is work ongoing to enable single drive expansion but it is still under development. **What problems is TrueNAS solving and how is that benefiting you?** TrueNAS provides a centralised data store which can be relied upon to maintain data integrity. In the event of a ransomware attack we would be able to restore a snapshot to quickly recover operations. ### 3. I have been running it for 10 years and have never once had an issue that was not easily resolved. **What do you dislike about TrueNAS?** I've yet to encounter any issue that I couldn't figure out. There is a learning curve if you are not familiar with FreeBSD, on which this solution is based, but it's not too difficult to pick up if you're familiar with other Unix-based OSs. **What problems is TrueNAS solving and how is that benefiting you?** I needed a solution for storing data without paying a huge amount for cloud providers. I can set up a server in my home to store any and all data, then open up certain apps outside the network to access anywhere. Great solution ### 4. I used to do it all by command line on my last system and this makes it so much easier. Virtual machines for basic needs is also great. **What do you dislike about TrueNAS?** There can be some clunkiness with configuring certain things (OpenVPN and some aspects of custom Jails). They are fast to respond and very knowledgeable. On top of this, the product itself is robust and easy to manage - the dashboard is great for my junior admins to get a picture of what's going on, but there's still plenty of advanced controls to tweak performance. **What do you dislike about TrueNAS?** I can't think of anything off the top of my head that is poor with this product. Even the salespeople are easy to work with and never were pushy when we were working on a decision. **What problems is TrueNAS solving and how is that benefiting you?** TrueNAS replaced our old HP MSA unit with an all-flash iSCSI box that had multi-gig capabilities. It really improved our throughput and stability for our DC farm. ### 6. TrueNas gives you the ability to do your own optimizations to the system to get the most bang for your buck. **What do you dislike about TrueNAS?** I dislike the flavors, which are core and scale. Someone new to TrueNas might not know which one fits their needs best or understand certain limitations. One of these limitations is the read/write performance that was noted on Scale. It's one of those "for your own protection" things that I totally understand, but it can be annoying at times. TrueNAS should be a storage server first and foremost, and I'm perfectly fine with having to put extras in a VM. **What problems is TrueNAS solving and how is that benefiting you?** Nearly fully automated NAS management ontop of the hyper reliable ZFS. When they work, it is super. Specifically, the Plex one which I needed to reinstall several times when it wouldn't update correctly. The only other issue I faced was the occasional crash, although I suspect this was caused by a faulty piece of hardware in my system. **What problems is TrueNAS solving and how is that benefiting you?** TrueNAS is a good solution for businesses requiring data storage which can be easily maintained and support networks with more than 25 users on a limited budget. ### 46.
