In every service change cycle, we spent the first week fixing data mismatches between our GTFS feed and internal GIS stop inventory. We built FME workspace using GTFS reader that cross checks stop IDs against our enterprise geodatabase and flags discrepancies with Tester transformer before anything gets published. Complex workflows and debugging can become a bit difficult, especially when working with large datasets or very advanced transformations. Our project involved consolidating flood risk data from four agencies. FME reader library handled all of it without needing third party converters or pre processing scripts. Statistics Calculator and Clipper transformers let us get catchment summaries and clip to ward boundaries in same pass. As consultant working across multiple clients i also value that workspaces are portable. I build something for one council and adapt it for another in much less time. Running a large flood risk workspace across county wide dataset and FME Desktop stopped working mid translation. Memory usage climbed and it just failed. I like how FME Platform makes data automation and transformation easy with its visual workflow builder and strong integrations. The platform supports multiple data formats, saving a lot of manual work and improving efficiency. I find the workflow automation and drag-and-drop interface especially powerful for building ETL pipelines without heavy coding. I also appreciate that it is flexible, easy to learn for daily operations, and helps reduce manual work while improving workflow consistency and efficiency. There are hundreds of input and output formats available. Transformers can be used to perform a wide range of GIS operations on the data. I also like the visual preview, which makes it easy to check the progress of the data transformation as it runs. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

While Safe does allow side-by-side version installation, an in-place upgrade is not an option, and transformer upgrades are time-consuming. FME Flow upgrades are much better than they were a few years back, but they still lack the reliability needed to give me full confidence when going into a Flow upgrade. Every quarter our field teams were exporting pipe network updates in one format and asset management platform was expecting something different. Someone always spent full day fixing those files manually. But after we built FME workspace to handle that transformation it just stopped being a problem. Geometry reprojection and attribute mapping in same workspace, no extra scripts. FeatureMerger transformer saved us from writing custom logic we would have to maintain ourselves. Error messaging during workspace execution is not good. When something fails mid run the log is verbose in wrong places and missing where it matters.
