Even though it is difficult to analyze the perfomance of the product, when Fivetran synced, I can analyze a lot of values via Big Query. **What do you dislike about Fivetran?** It is a little bit annoying that a lot of data would be synced and the cost would be so high depend of the service to sync. Usage of these connectors is as simple as being provided the correct credentials to the application and select what data you'd like to sync. **What do you dislike about Fivetran?** Support could be better - it's really hit or miss on which support agent you get if a connection isn't working as expected. For example, I was having problems connecting to a connector and needed to go to the vendors (connectors) support to get a better work around; this kept my case open with Fivetran and still awaiting help further downstream from Fivetran Support. **What problems is Fivetran solving and how is that benefiting you?** Getting data into the environment quickly and in a repeatable fashion for further transformation, analysis and ultimate consumption by end users. ### 6. It works really well for low-volume data sources such as Google Sheets etc. effectively cutting the engineer in the loop from these data sources. It is easy to spin up sources from high-volume data sources like Google Analytics, Meta Ads etc. but be extremely aware that this is very cost ineffective usage of the platform. **What do you dislike about Fivetran?** Extremely opaque billing practices. Our bill shot up about 5x month over month with no notice because of very loose usage of "free historical syncs." The initial trial period for connectors obfuscates billing for connectors and the platform does not provide any control over your spending (such as maximum spend limits or accurate spend forecasts). In conjunction with how the usage is calculated - effectively, you will get charged 80% of the usage for the month on the first day and the rest throughout the month; this means that you do not have any control over your spending throughout the month. On top of this, the support for billing is extremely thin and our experience is that Client Success team has a very limited understanding of billing and usage and even less agency over it.They will hop on a call when you want and they will act emphathic etc. but in our experience, they never follow-up on their action items. Extremely unhelpful and patronizing attitude in general. **What problems is Fivetran solving and how is that benefiting you?** We used fivetran to extract data from various sources and sink it in our data warehouse. It does this job relatively okay but the billing practices make the tool effectively a very low ROI investment, I'd recommend just going the traditional ETL route. ### 7. SQL models and syncs are super intuitive. In our case, it is the best tool to quickly provide value to the business or POC some solutions, without huge development effort. **What do you dislike about Fivetran?** The only thing I can think of is not always the best notifications of syncs. Census is always providing very helpful notifications on sync failures, but more from the Census end. If an actual error happens on the destination system end it is not always considered a sync failure. For example Salesforce sync and if we have rows that are going to be rejected by Salesforce, via Census it is considered as correct - where from my perspective it should be something like a warning at least. **What problems is Fivetran solving and how is that benefiting you?** Quick POC development and quick integrations with systems that we don't have any other customer integrations internally. At LinkedIn for example, we needed data eng to build custom integrations with each of our platforms. Now, a significantly smaller team can accomplish the same, with more accuracy, in a fraction of the time. **What do you dislike about Fivetran?** The list of available census partners can be limited, and we've had a couple instances where our census syncs have failed. Fortunately, the census customer success team was very responsive and helpful. **What problems is Fivetran solving and how is that benefiting you?** We used to have to build customer integrations using platform APIs. The process was time consuming, and each time we wanted to add a field, multiple things had to be updated. Now we just manage all of our census models via DBT, and sharing data with platforms is as simple as matching fields in the platform. ### 9. For instance, I don't love that Census always needs to be pointed to a table. Marketing audience syncing to email marketing platform. The platform is well organized and integrates well across systems. **What do you dislike about Fivetran?** Our relationship with Census has been a bit all over the place. Our initial purchase went well, but at renewal we faced challenges with increased pricing even when requesting to stay on the same plan. Communications flopped going through Vendr and we were left to try to get the price within budget at last minute which involved a call with a manager who was rude and condescending. We did decide to renew to avoid the trouble of switching, and upon adding onto our contract we had easy and quick negotiations so perhaps it all just depends on who you're dealing with or whether you're using Vendr. It takes weeks for support to resolve such issues. It takes days for support to respond to urgent issues Some API methods have ridiculous designs, e.g. updating the schema: you have to perform 7 API calls in a row to achieve a single change in the config. There's no API versioning; requests and responses just get updated. Pricing is extreme. Self-hosted solutions, for example, Airbyte, are identical in terns of setup and maintenance efforts, but you only pay for hosting. Their support team is also super helpful, I had an issue and they quickly provided relevant feedback, allowing me to resolve it. **What do you dislike about Fivetran?** The error message I received when I had my issue was not particularly helpful. It just said 'Source model has one or more validation errors'. The support rep pointed me to another area of the application ("Preview Results") to find the error message from the data warehouse, allowing me to diagnose the issue. But it would be nice if that data warehouse error message was more immediately available. **What problems is Fivetran solving and how is that benefiting you?** We use Census to sync data from our data warehouse (Snowflake) to our CRM (Salesforce). I work as a Data Scientist, building SQL queries for Census pipelines. **Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Alex W. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** February 21, 2023 **What do you like best about Fivetran?** The upsides of Census are as follows * Intuitive UI for scheduling jobs and creating new data sources * Satisfactory alerting for when jobs break * Relatively stable data writes to Google Sheets (which I predominantly use). **What do you dislike about Fivetran?** * Columns don't always auto-calibrate when changing the data source/query * Perception that there is not as much transparency around which G Sheets the data writes out to * Not great ability to reduce sprawl with similar or outdated queries + jobs **What problems is Fivetran solving and how is that benefiting you?** A lot of our organization relies on Google Sheets, so my team predominantly uses Census to refresh data into Google Sheets from our database so we can syndicate our data out to more users who aren't as SQL Savvy. ### 49. The integrations are very easy to setup and there are so many integrations available. It's saved our company so much time and freed up our data team to work on more complex data problems **What do you dislike about Fivetran?** It can be difficult to gauge how many fields you need when setting up a sync, and it's quite easy to reach the maximum number of fields. It'd be really helpful to see a list of the fields that are actually in use and for which tools, in order to optimise the number of fields in use **What problems is Fivetran solving and how is that benefiting you?** We use various tools that we need to sync our user data to. Historically, everytime we needed to integrate a new dataset to a new tool, our data team would have to do all of the leg work, pulling them away from other projects. This way, anyone can add new data integrations and we can leverage our user data across all of our apps ### 50. Their integrations work fine and were easy to setup. You can choose how frequent you want the data to be synced and its easy to add new tables. **What do you dislike about Fivetran?** I have been using Fivetran for three months now and have been through 3 Account managers (Due to restructuring). My current manager tricked me into an annual contract by promising me discounts which were never applied. The costing is calculated based on Monthly Active Rows, which non of to account managers understood and could warn / provide feedback on expensive tables like transactionaccountingline table (non-incremental) which is necessary for Netsuite and also part of Fivetran's official dbt models. Overall its been a turbulent experience leaving me to write this review suggesting to look into other vendors. **What problems is Fivetran solving and how is that benefiting you?** ELT, Fivetran like many other companies are trying the manage the complex engineering of ELT.
