The best benefit is that it is saving a lot of money and the most important thing it saves is my time. I have increased my productivity just by using this.

  ### 4. Powerful imagery analysis platform with a steep learning curve

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Broadcast Media | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 07, 2026

**What do you like best about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

What I appreciate most is how it handles large raster datasets without choking — you can work with massive satellite imagery files and the processing pipeline stays manageable. The spectral analysis tools are genuinely powerful once you get used to them; things like band combinations and supervised classification feel well thought-out compared to more general GIS tools.I also like that it integrates reasonably well into broader workflows — connecting with ArcGIS or exporting to standard formats isn't a headache. And the Spatial Modeler (the graphical workflow builder) is something I find myself coming back to, because it lets you build repeatable processing chains visually, which is useful when you're doing the same type of analysis across multiple datasets.

It also has AI / Intelligence. Lots of it. Oh my god.

**What do you dislike about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

The interface feels like it hasn't fully shed its legacy roots — it can be unintuitive, especially when you're trying to find a specific tool that you know exists but is buried three menus deep. The learning curve is steep for new users, and the documentation doesn't always bridge that gap well.
Performance can also be inconsistent — certain processing jobs that should be straightforward take longer than expected, and error messages aren't always helpful in telling you why something failed. You often end up troubleshooting by trial and error.
And the licensing model is frustrating. It's expensive, and in a team setting, license conflicts and seat availability become a real friction point.

**What problems is Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The core problem it solves for me is turning raw satellite or aerial imagery into something analytically useful — classifying land cover, detecting change over time, extracting features that would be invisible just looking at a standard RGB image. That's not something you can do well in general-purpose GIS tools. The practical benefit is that it compresses what would otherwise be very manual, expert-heavy work into repeatable workflows. Once you've set up a classification model or a processing chain in Spatial Modeler, you can run it across new datasets without rebuilding everything from scratch — that saves real time on recurring projects. For reporting purposes it also helps that outputs are credible and traceable. When you're delivering analysis to a client or institution, being able to say the work was done in an industry-standard platform carries weight.

  ### 5. Powerful Remote Sensing Suite, But a Steep Learning Curve

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Environmental Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 15, 2026

**What do you like best about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

What I liked most about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE) is how well it brings satellite imagery and remote sensing tasks together in a single platform. I also appreciated the wide range of practical tools it provides for image processing, mapping, and spatial analysis, which I found especially helpful for academic and environmental work.

**What do you dislike about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

The biggest downside for me was the learning curve, especially when I was trying to figure out ecology-related tasks. Some tools and workflows can feel complicated for beginners, and the interface takes time to get used to when you’re still learning remote sensing and GIS analysis.

**What problems is Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Octave Imagine helps simplify the processing and analysis of satellite imagery and spatial data. In my experience, it was particularly useful for academic work because it kept habitat mapping, image interpretation, and environmental analysis better organized, easier to manage, and overall more efficient. It also helped me clarify specific research questions for my thesis, especially around mapping carnivore species.

  ### 6. Spatial Modeler & Object-Based Extraction for Water Projects

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Civil Engineering | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 14, 2026

**What do you like best about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

What I like best about ERDAS IMAGINE is how its image processing and spatial analysis tools directly support my water and environmental modeling projects. The Spatial Modeler lets me build custom, repeatable workflows like watershed delineation, flood extent mapping, and time-series vegetation analysis without scripting everything from scratch.

The object-based feature extraction is a game-changer for classifying complex wetland and riparian zones, giving me cleaner results than pixel-based methods. I also rely on the seamless handling of multispectral, thermal, and radar data to monitor changes even under cloud cover.

An unexpected bonus is the cartographic output: I can produce publication-ready maps right in IMAGINE, which saves me from exporting to another GIS. The ribbon interface and step-by-step workflow pane make the UI intuitive, and the drag-and-drop model builder has noticeably reduced the time my team spends on repetitive processing, so we can focus on interpreting results and crafting real solutions for water-resource challenges.

**What do you dislike about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

The cost is very high and hard to justify when performance lags badly with large datasets. Working with big multispectral mosaics or long time series often causes hangs or crashes, forcing me to break data into smaller pieces just to keep working. Support delays are another pain point, sometimes taking days to resolve licensing or processing issues right when deadlines are tight. The frequent updates disrupt the classic interface and signature workflow that experienced users depend on, adding an unnecessary learning curve each time. On top of that, the AI and intelligence capabilities feel underdeveloped. Automated classification wizards and feature extraction often produce unreliable results that need heavy manual cleanup, and there is no meaningful integration of modern deep learning tools. Integrations with other platforms are weak too. Moving data between ERDAS IMAGINE and common GIS packages like ArcGIS or QGIS is clunky, file format support can be inconsistent, and a proper API to streamline cross-platform workflows is missing. I wish they would stabilize a long term support version with the original tool layout, speed up processing for large raster volumes, offer a more affordable consulting firm tier, provide faster expert support, and deliver real AI powered analysis and smoother third party integrations so the software doesn't become the bottleneck in critical environmental work.

**What problems is Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

ERDAS IMAGINE solves the core problem of turning raw satellite and aerial imagery into reliable spatial information for water and environmental modeling. Before I had a consistent image processing platform, stitching together multispectral, thermal, and radar data from different sensors was a slow, manual struggle. Now I can perform watershed delineation, flood extent mapping, and time series vegetation analysis within a single environment, which directly feeds into project solutions. The Spatial Modeler lets me build repeatable workflows that I run over and over for monitoring change over time, saving hours each week compared to doing those steps separately in multiple tools. Despite performance lags with very large datasets, the fundamental classification and terrain analysis tools still help me cleanly extract wetland and riparian zone boundaries, giving me accurate base maps for environmental impact assessments. The object based feature extraction, in particular, produces better results in messy vegetated areas than any basic pixel classifier I have used elsewhere. In the end, the software helps me move from raw imagery to a defensible model output, which supports better decisions for water resource management and lets me deliver client ready maps and analyses without completely leaving the ERDAS ecosystem.

  ### 7. Powerful Remote Sensing Platform with a Learning Curve

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dharamveer p. | Application Security Engineer, Information Technology and Services, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 19, 2026

**What do you like best about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

I really appreciate the depth in remote sensing functionality of ERDAS IMAGINE. It’s designed for serious raster processing and satellite imagery analysis, unlike lightweight GIS tools. The advanced classification algorithms and powerful raster calculation tools really stand out. Its robust georeferencing and orthorectification tools, comprehensive spectral analysis capabilities, and strong support for large datasets are vital for my work. I enjoy the model builder functionality that allows automating repetitive workflows, significantly improving productivity when processing multiple datasets. The software impresses with its performance in handling high-resolution imagery, dealing with large raster files without frequent crashes. Moreover, the detailed and flexible visualization tools are great. I can manipulate bands, adjust histograms, and customize rendering, which helps in improving interpretation quality.

**What do you dislike about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

While ERDAS IMAGINE is a powerful remote sensing platform, there are areas where improvements would significantly enhance the overall user experience and efficiency. 1. Steep Learning Curve One of the main challenges is the complexity of the interface. ERDAS IMAGINE is feature-rich, which is a strength, but it can also be overwhelming for new users. The number of tools, menus, and configuration options requires time and training to fully understand. For professionals with a remote sensing background, this is manageable. However, for beginners or GIS users transitioning into advanced raster analytics, onboarding can feel intimidating. More guided workflows, built-in tutorials, or contextual help panels could make adoption smoother.2. User Interface Feels Slightly Dated The functionality is strong, but the interface design could benefit from modernization. Compared to some newer geospatial platforms, the UI feels less intuitive and slightly rigid. Certain tasks require navigating multiple dialog boxes, and the workflow is not always as streamlined as it could be. A more simplified ribbon layout, better tool grouping, and clearer visual hierarchy would improve usability. 3. Licensing Cost ERDAS IMAGINE is positioned as an enterprise-grade solution, and the pricing reflects that. For smaller organizations, academic users without institutional licenses, or independent consultants, the cost may be a barrier. While the capabilities justify the price in large-scale projects, more flexible licensing options or scaled versions for smaller teams could increase accessibility. 4. Performance with Extremely Large Datasets Although the software handles large raster files well, performance can still slow down when working with extremely high-resolution imagery combined with complex spectral or classification models.

**What problems is Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

ERDAS IMAGINE transforms raw satellite imagery into decision-ready information, reduces manual effort through automation, enhances data accuracy, scales efficiently with large datasets, and improves decision-making with precise land classification and environmental analysis.

  ### 8. Powerful Remote Sensing Tools, but Pricey and Complex for Beginners

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Aderaw A. | Volunteer Mapper, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 14, 2026

**What do you like best about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

I like the performance is best. But the price should be minimize for students and academic tasks. More over it should be involve or plug the AI to automate the function.

**What do you dislike about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

It is expensive software for beginners. They can not easily afford the cost. specially for students in developing counties. So it is better to have minimize the cost.

**What problems is Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I highly utilize this software for image processing of range land and natural forest, change detection and urban sprawl research. Specially I love the image processing quality.

  ### 9. Powerful, Dependable Remote Sensing with ERDAS IMAGINE

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Airlines/Aviation | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 05, 2026

**What do you like best about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

What I like most is how seriously it takes image analysis. It doesn’t treat satellite imagery as a pretty backdrop; it treats it as real data. The spectral analysis tools are strong, the raster processing is powerful, and when you’re doing things like classification, change detection, or band math, it feels dependable and precise.

It’s also very capable with large, messy datasets. Big scenes, multiple bands, different sensors—ERDAS can handle it without freaking out. If your work leans more scientific than cartographic, this is where it really shines.

That said, the interface feels dated, and the learning curve can be steep at first. It’s not the most intuitive or visually appealing software, and it’s definitely not something you pick up in an afternoon. Still, once you know what you’re doing, it becomes a real workhorse.

Overall, ERDAS IMAGINE isn’t flashy, but it’s powerful, reliable, and clearly built for people who actually do remote sensing—not just map-making.

**What do you dislike about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

The interface feels old and clunky. It looks like it hasn’t changed much in years, and simple tasks can take way more clicks than they should. Compared to newer GIS and remote sensing tools, it just doesn’t feel intuitive.

The learning curve is steep. If you’re new, it can be overwhelming. A lot of tools assume you already know the theory behind image processing, and there’s not much hand-holding built in.

It’s not great for visualization or map design. If you care about making clean, modern-looking maps, ERDAS isn’t the tool you’ll reach for. You’ll probably end up exporting your results to another GIS anyway.

Performance can be inconsistent. It handles big datasets well most of the time, but when it crashes, it really crashes and error messages aren’t always helpful.

The cost is hard to justify. For what you pay, especially when free or cheaper tools like QGIS and Python libraries keep improving, ERDAS can feel expensive unless you really need its specific strengths.

In short, ERDAS IMAGINE is powerful, but it often feels slow, dated, and unforgiving. It gets the job done but it doesn’t always make the process enjoyable.

**What problems is Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

ERDAS IMAGINE solves the challenge of analyzing raw satellite imagery, not just viewing it. It helps me turn complex image data into practical outputs such as classifications, indices, and change detection results.
For me, this means saving time and improving accuracy, especially when I’m working with large, multi-band datasets and need to carry out more in-depth remote-sensing analysis.

**What do you like best about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

The tool icons are really helpful as the icons make it easier to know what the tool does. The process is also faster than the previous software like ENVI and ArcGIS which I used. Additionally, the image processing is also faster, and it does not take time as it does in other softwares. The interface is smooth and, It did not take me a lot of time to get use to it. The tool box and the way how instruction is shown is very useful, as even if I get stumbled on any tool, it shows what the tool does. I would say that the best part among all the best part is that this software is simpler to use and easier to understand.

**What do you dislike about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

Sometimes I wish the application had more shortcut keys. The application could be more faster I guess. If I had more shortcut keys I would do my job faster and the interface would be very fun to use it as well. On one hand the software may not be aesthetically pleasing as it is a technical software, if it were, I guess it would seem complex. I also wish that the meta data text could be made bigger as well. as sometimes, I have difficult time reading the text. Specially, if I am instructing someone, I would have to go really near the screen to read the text.

Its great for remote sensing work, and it supports a large number of data types. It is intuitive and easy to use

**What do you dislike about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

I wish that the atmospheric correction tool was better. And i wish it was easier to change how a raster image is visually displaced

**Recommendations to others considering Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE):**

It makes remote sensing analysis much easier

**What problems is Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I'm using erdas imagine for remote sensing analysis within salt marshes

  ### 23. High quality software for geospatial analysis

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mike G. | Graduate Research Assistant, Higher Education, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 20, 2017

**What do you like best about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

There is a minor learning curve with the software, but once this is passed, the software is relatively user friendly. The interface is logically ordered and the user guide/help is useful for problem solving purposes.

The best thing about the software is the sheer number of options for conducting virtually any conceivable analysis of geospatial data or remote sensing imagery.

**What do you dislike about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

On Windows machine, it does not use the native interface for saving and opening files, which makes navigating and saving large numbers of files somewhat cumbersome.

Also, since ENVI is the most comparable software in terms of capabilities, I found many instances where ENVI was easier to use or had functionality not available in ERDAS Imagine. For example, I found that creating ground control points using ENVI's automated process was easier than ERDAS, which requires manual entry for creating ground control points and warping imagery.

Particularly, I found that ERDAS Imagine was unable to handle certain file types that I needed for my research, particularly HDF and JP2 file types. In fact, I found the software to be somewhat temperamental in general, and spent a good deal of time investigating numerous error messages due the software's fickle nature. Therefore, while I was more familiar with ERDAS Imagine, I often felt compelled to use ENVI for ease of use or due to lack of analogous capabilities in ERDAS.

**What problems is Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am a graduate student at a university working on remote sensing applications for agriculture. I specifically used ERDAS Imagine to process imagery from Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 satellites to examine changes in agricultural land use. The software was necessary for conducting much of my analysis of remotely sensed imagery and was particularly useful when conducting pre-processing for imagery.

Use of ERDAS Imagine software was critical for moving forward with my academic research and helped answer my primary research questions regarding the capacity of remote sensing to monitor and analyze agricultural land use.

  ### 24. The most complete software proprietary to geomatics

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Research | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 02, 2018

**What do you like best about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

the interface is very clear, new users can easily understand the software, the products generated present excellent quality. the workflow is great with the new developed tools that allow you to define the bands and the processes to be applied in the different moments of image processing

**What do you dislike about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

the cost of the product is high, it does not present alternatives for international students, but if you have enough money to invest in the best tools for digital image processing and manipulation of raster information, you must acquire ERDAS, definitely

**What problems is Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

with this program what you invest in money you save in working hours, In my previous job, I had the software and evaluated the times invested today, before we used less time to get a better product

  ### 25. Great for Classification

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kathy E. | GIS Analyst, Oil & Energy, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 08, 2018

**What do you like best about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

I use Erdas for Classification of aerial images. In comparison to ArcGIS Pro, Erdas doesn't crash as often. It is also a bit more robust in doing different types of classification.

**What do you dislike about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

I only know an introductory level to ERDAS so I am not able to do object based image classification through this program.

**Recommendations to others considering Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE):**

If you already have ArcMAP within your company, try using that classification before purchasing another software if money is a concern. Otherwise, ERDAS is pretty simple to use with a good knowledge base .

**What problems is Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Classifying land use systems.

  ### 26. It does the job...a bit expensive

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed Date:** February 02, 2018

**What do you like best about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

The semi-automated feature is helpful in analysis.

**What do you dislike about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

Time consuming to set up the semi-automated analysis.

**Recommendations to others considering Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE):**

if you have the money, not a bad software package.

**What problems is Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Aerial imagery assessment and orthorectification of new imagery

  ### 27. Intuitive Raster Analysis tool

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Scott F. | Geographic Information System Administrator/Architect, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 10, 2016

**What do you like best about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

The change to ribbon format was good and the workflows for processing large mosaic datasets or sub setting are fantastic. Image reclassifications are also intuitive. My favorite has always been the ease of doing manual image rectifications.

**What do you dislike about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

No direct integration with ESRI and the tools to build a printed map template are not user friendly.

**Recommendations to others considering Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE):**

Compare with other Electronic Light Table (tools) because this product has its dominant areas but might not be the best overall tool for your given workflow.

**What problems is Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Fantastic for creating large batch image mosaics from newly collected image sets.

  ### 28. Review of ERDAS IMAGINE

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Zhenyu L. | Environmental Scientist, Environmental Services, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 09, 2015

**What do you like best about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

I think it is the mainstream software for remote sensing analyst. The thing I like the most with ERDAS IMAGINE is its capability of performing almost all the processings you can find from remote sensing books, such as calibration, classification, and accuracy assessment.

**What do you dislike about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

It's a commercial software and the price is relatively high. The GUI is a bit out dated and the usage of the tool is not that straightforward. Compared with other spatial data processing software, such as ArcGIS, the help document is not that specific.

**Recommendations to others considering Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE):**

I would recommend ERDAS IMAGINE for users who need to process a great amount of remote sensing images. It's well adopted in the field of remote sensing even though the price is a bit expensive.

**What problems is Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I mainly use it for remote sensing data processing. It's always quite reliable and the processing speed is relatively fast..

  ### 29. Better than Arc for image analysis

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Architecture & Planning | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 28, 2015

**What do you like best about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

The GUI for each tool is logical and well sized. The classification tools are simple to use. Overall a well designed imagery analysis tool set. Simple to change symbology.

**What do you dislike about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

The ribbon format, while standard now, is a bit cumbersome here especially since tools were renamed and moved in the middle of learning it. There's not really an easy way to make maps with it that I can remember.

**Recommendations to others considering Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE):**

If you rarely use raster imagery you can probably get by without ERDAS Imagine.

**What problems is Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

When trying to do land cover analysis this is definitely the tool I go to first though ArcGIS is our standard because its much easier to understand and manipulate.

  ### 30. ERDAS Imagine Review

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Environmental Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 07, 2015

**What do you like best about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

I was pleasantly surprised when I started using ERDAS Imagine, having previously used ArcGIS and IDRISI in university for all remote sensing. ERDAS Imagine is specifically designed for remote sensing purposes, and as such one of its main benefits is the speed at which it can handle large raster files. Other favourites within the software are the Spatial Modeller function which provides a platform to build your own queries and use again later - really helpful on repetitive tasks!

Imagine provides a perfect base for the beginner to highly advanced 'remote senser' with its ample amount of tools within a highly user friendly environment (I love the ribbon interface). the help button is also very useful providing helpful run throughs of specific functions.

So in summary, my best points are:
- Speed
- Spatial Modeller
- Variety of tools and functions
- User friendly
- Help tool

**What do you dislike about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

There are certain more technical features that are not yet included within the spatial modeller, however I am hoping that the new release may fix some of this. Sometimes it can be hard to find the button you are looking for, however this can be overcome with the help/search function.

**What problems is Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The ability to create specific workspaces for colleagues who are not familiar with remote sensing enhances the usability. Those not so familiar are able to use the workspace that has only the buttons they need - therefore they don't have to spend ages going through all of the buttons to find the correct one!

  ### 31. ERDAS IMAGINE - A Great Piece of Software!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Tim N. | Geographic Information System Officer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**What do you like best about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

The features that I like best about ERDAS is that is has the ability to view spatial data in 3D which helps visualise and understand data in greater detail. The overall software processes data really well!

**What do you dislike about Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE)?**

Too many clicks to run a process, this could be improved to quickly run processes.

**What problems is Octave Imagine (ERDAS IMAGINE) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have used ERDAS Imagine to study and understand the effects of vegetation change using remote sensing EVI imagery.
