It provides clear forms for input of information and enables you to directly insert in-text references, footnotes and bibliographies into Microsoft Word documents. **What do you dislike about EndNote?** EndNote is, however, quite clunky at times. If a particular field is unavailable (e.g. the exact date of publication of a newspaper article), this blank field will come up as a punctuation mark when you insert the citation into MS Word. The other major problem with EndNote is the limitations upon the customisation of non-standard referencing styles. I use the Australian Guide to Legal Citation, and am unable to program EndNote to provide accurate citations for the AGLC format for chapters from edited volumes. **Recommendations to others considering EndNote:** Consider EndNote alongside other, similar referencing software. Choose the one that feels most intuitive to you and best suits the particular referencing style that you use. **What problems is EndNote solving and how is that benefiting you?** EndNote is a great way to keep all of your references together in the one place. It is also handy for inserting bibliographies and references directly into documents for those using common citation methods. However, it is still important to check any inserted references for accuracy and completeness. ### 3. It's good at formatting references to conform with a wide variety of journal styles and integrating with Microsoft Word. **What do you dislike about EndNote?** Endnote is not the best citation management software when it comes to cloud access. I have switched to Google Docs when writing papers, and Endnote is not compatible without constant exports and loading new libraries every time you make a change. **Recommendations to others considering EndNote:** Be sure to know in advance if you need cloud access. More than I've found in other reference management software. >Gives the user the freedom to customize formatting and has a pretty exhaustive list pre-loaded of formats. >Dependable even while working with large quantities of citations. I used it to wite my masters thesis which involved an extensive literature review. **What do you dislike about EndNote?** >It is difficult to learn in the beginning. The help files are not really that useful The way the platform is structured isn't really intuitive. Took me weeks to figure out how to make my library. >Even though I have access to EndNote right now through my university, I wouldn't once I graduate. It makes it easy to format the citations whichever way you prefer, as it provides options for formatting citations required at a specific journal or publication. It arranges and characterizes all your citations and sources, such that you can view the entire citation/publication with one click, and refer back to them when required, and saves a lot of time. **What do you dislike about EndNote?** The user interface can be slow. And understanding and familiarizing yourself with endnote can take a lot of time. It usually requires a lot of instructions, so as a new user, people might find it frustrating and time consuming. **What problems is EndNote solving and how is that benefiting you?** Makes scientific grant/paper writing easy once you've mastered endnote. ### 9. I like that every reference is editable by field and you can combine multiple styles within a document (eg to start a sentence, insert in a table etc). Also easy to get references into it. However I traded in for Papers which has greater functionality as a PDF organizer as well. **What do you dislike about EndNote?** Nowadays a reference software really needs to be a PDF manager too, and Endnote just doesn't have as much functionality as something like Papers for organising PDFs with a sleek interface **Recommendations to others considering EndNote:** If you are happy with basic PDF management, want flexibility in text and want something sleeker than Mendedely, Endnote might be worth the cost. The license is annual rather than perpetual which is a consideration. **What problems is EndNote solving and how is that benefiting you?** Certainly removes the frustration I have with other referencing softwares for the production of scientific manuscripts- easy to copy and share libraries between collaborators. ### 10. It integrates very well into Word and a novice can get running productively in a short period of time. The program also supports the largest number of journal citation/reference formats that I'm aware of. **What do you dislike about EndNote?** At this point it really comes down to price. It is an expensive product and there are at least two free substitutes that are nearly as good (Zotero and Mendeley). For a new user the advantages of EndNote are too few to justify the price, so I think the primary audience is established users who have been using EndNote for decades, know how it works, and don't want to change. **Recommendations to others considering EndNote:** Don't get me wrong: EndNote is an outstanding piece of software that does everything you'd want it to do and it does it very well. However, because of the cost I'd recommend at least investigating the free alternatives (Zotero, Mendeley) to see if they suit your needs. **What problems is EndNote solving and how is that benefiting you?** For any reasonable amount of academic research and publishing, it is foolish to attempt to do reference management by hand--especially now that there are very capable free software tools available. EndNote is an extremely capable piece of software in this regard, allowing you to keep a database of articles (organized however you like and searchable by tags or keywords), and inserting citations into your papers with ease. The software supports nearly every sort of citation and reference format, so very little manual tweaking is ever required. ### 14. It has good integration with word, which is an added benefit. **What do you dislike about EndNote?** It is not easy to use, the search features for whole texts are clunky. Plus, it is pricey. **What problems is EndNote solving and how is that benefiting you?** Trying to organize many references, but ended up switching to Mendeley. ### 15. Their customer service is excellent as well. They have prompt and accurate response. There are many citation styles and it is easy to customize by myself. I used to use Mendeley, but now this is the main reference manager. **What do you dislike about EndNote?** It is great software but license fee is not cheap.... Also it seems like the file will be broken when I save the library file on cloud service, such as dropbox. I write papers with other people, so it would be great if we can share the library file... **Recommendations to others considering EndNote:** This is the best reference manager so far for me if you have money or your company pays for this, I strongly recommend to buy this. If you have any difficulty, you can search online or ask customer service. Overall, it is worth to pay that much. **What problems is EndNote solving and how is that benefiting you?** I am a researcher and write papers, so I am using the Endnote as primary reference manager. There are many citation styles, so I don't need to modify the style based on the journals. ### 16. For instance, the online search feature does not work a lot of the time. And in the newest versions of EndNote, the program will close unexpectedly when doing things such as creating or editing groups. It also refuses to open our libraries fairly frequently for no conceivable reason. **What problems is EndNote solving and how is that benefiting you?** EndNote will allow us to use bibliometrics to track which grants and RFAs have been the most productive. ### 17. It lets you upload pdfs of the file onto the software so you can access them at any point, even without internet. This feature is extremely useful when working on multiple papers/projects because it lets you compartmentalize documents instead of having them randomly saved on your computer. It has an extensive list of citation systems that you can choose from and has a decent integration with Microsoft Word. **What do you dislike about EndNote?** It's not something you can figure out as you go along, I would suggest taking a tutorial or asking someone who already uses it to familiarize you with it to make the most of the software. The normal citation feature is very easy to use but will require extensive input of data, it doesn't always pull everything from the url or source of the information. I honestly felt like the only thing it helped me in was arranging the information in a particular format - you spend equal amount of type entering information on it as you would typing it out independently. The integration between computers (trying to share your endnote file with someone else you're working with) is patchy and I feel can definitely be more streamlined so that it works with different systems. **Recommendations to others considering EndNote:** Make the most of the trial period to familiarize yourself with the software rather than waiting for the need to arise to use certain specialized features.
