While trying to learn a foreign language, there is an abyss between what we think we said and what sound actually came out of our mouths. I dislike that ELSA doesn't take native English accents into account. I've had native-speaker friends use it and still get marked on vowels or endings because the app doesn't recognize those variations in pronunciation as acceptable. It's perfect for speaking practice and that is what I like most because this is the weakest part of my English - excellent written English and stuck when it comes to speaking. I've been learning with Elsa for months now and I can see a significant improvement of my fluency and pronunciation accuracy. I'm really happy for that, thanks to Elsa. It's also a pity that ELSA doesn't support standard British English pronunciation. I find it really hard to get a high score with my accent. What problems is ELSA Speak solving and how is that benefiting you? apart from learning with Elsa App, I'm also learning from an English teacher with a British accent, and I also spend much time chatting with friends from the UK. Therefore I can tell I'm heavily influenced with British English. Because of this, I've got a little issue with Elsa's pronunciation feedback. Especially British diphtongs such as /əʊ/ while Elsa often recognises as /au/, and /ɔː/ which Elsa recognises as /ou/ instead. The main upside is that you can learn the language at your pace, with immediate feedback and without any dependence on others. It's especially good for more introverted people who might not want to communicate with other humans and reveal their shortcomings. Plus it's very cost-effective compared to any paid learning program. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about ELSA Speak? I find that, overall, Elsa is almost perfect (as far as today's state of AI allows). What I would like to see is more granularity, maybe, in how I can choose topics. I know of an option to choose an interest, but the list is limited, and whatever I choose, the system keeps inserting dialogs about business, high tech, etc. These are topics that I'm very good at as they are the essence of my work. I want more mundane, day-to-day dialogs as this is where I feel I lag behind. On the whole, this is the one single biggest downside of any learning program I've seen: lack of spontaneous, live, everyday conversations. For more advanced learners, this is the only challenging genre. Quick live exchanges, with natural stutters, mistakes, abandoned sentences, against some background noise. Colloquialisms, accents (for one, I'm not that good at understanding a really thick Texan accent). Currently, it can only be found in movies, but topics there are rarely useful for improving your everyday conversation skills. Give me a Southern drawl with a slang expression here and there about going to get groceries or who is to do the dishes tonight, and I'm yours forever. If not that, at least more live dialogs (and the ability to set this preference). Another minor grievance is that sometimes the system seems to be unable to recognize the input and keeps giving a low score though it seems the pronunciation is fine. It happens more often with short phrases or stand-alone words. E.g., recently, I was unable to score more than 80 for the word 'correct'. In a longer sentence, this word was accepted, and the score was as expected. But I understand that modern speech recognition tech is not perfect, so it's not a complaint, rather just an observation. It's a great product helping you gather instant feedback and identify (and also mitigate) weaknesses in your English. It's not a replacement for a human teacher, but it complements whatever other effort you're putting in to improve your mastery of the language. I'd say, based on my experience, that you can get much better at English just by reading aloud for 15-20 minutes a day + doing quick daily lessons on Elsa (another 20-25 mins a day). I'd been a student of English for many years, but I'd never been to any English-speaking country and was worried if my spoken language could be well understood by others. I knew that my reading, writing and listening skills were adequate but wanted to make sure that I was good enough at speaking too. It was all triggered by a new job where I knew I'd need to communicate in English on a daily basis. Of course, Elsa is unlikely to teach you everything, but for me, it was an important boost of confidence when I realized that my scores were above 90% in all categories.
