Not having to constantly go back and forth from the keyboard to the mouse makes it's much more easy to get things done quicker. It's easily accessible. It is also very easy to learn. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** I don't like that it can only run off of certain internet browsers. It is not the most user friendly, but once the end user figures out some basic screens to find information, it is easy to go through different screens and find out more about their history, relationships both to people and organizations, giving history, wealth screening information, address history, academic history, and many other things that are useful to both the end user fundraisers as well as the administrators who are pulling reports for other offices. The merger with Ellucian seems like it has and will continue to improve what is available for Colleague Advancement customers, and their yearly conference is a great source of information and new ideas for how to best utilize Colleague Advancement for a variety of data, reporting, and fundraising needs. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** Many users who come into our organization after using a different fundraising database struggle to get up to speed with Colleague Advancement. They are not used to not being able to pull their own reports, which adds some additional time and waiting. While Colleague does have a plethora of information, it is difficult to pull that information out with the reporting tools that are available and therefore there is a lot of going back and forth with report requests. This issue may change as new reporting software is introduced and utilized. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** Right now, we're trying to better utilize the payroll deduction function as well as the campaign function. Having a better understanding and process for payroll deductions will increase giving and having a better understanding and process for the campaign tree function will provide better information about how donations are coming in. ### 27. I like that I can make the window bigger or smaller to see better. Also sometimes it'll freeze, not very often, but it happens. And I don't like how sometimes when it freezes, when I close it and open it back up, it won't let me see the information I need because it says it's locked by me. :/ **Recommendations to others considering Ellucian Student:** Just be patient. Also really love the tracking system when staff meet with students. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** I don't really like the control page down action that has to be used to navigate. I also do not like that you cannot right click to copy and paste. Both minor things. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** The biggest problems that we have solved is before we didn't have the greatest way of tracking history with a specific student. Now we have a great way to track which staff member had contact with a student and exactly when this was done. We even copy and paste e-mails directly into the tracking system so everyone knows word for word what was communicated to the student. The benefit to this is that we can read the history even before meeting with a student so that we know the past challenges a student has had and how to advise the student for their future endeavors. ### 33. The versatility you get is nice and being able to give each user different rights is key. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** Some functions take too many key strokes to complete. I don't want to hit enter 20 times just to submit a contact log. **Recommendations to others considering Ellucian Student:** The more you can learn about all its functions, the better off you will be! **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** Keeping things all in one place so that anyone can go in and look at the history of the person. Why can't they just be real words??? SFAREGS?? Why can't that just be called enrollment? I also wished it just looked more like updated software. **Recommendations to others considering Ellucian Student:** I would definitely have a formal training and a book with all of the codes for every user. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** It's a one stop shop for all of our student information. ### 39. I also like the keyboard shortcuts, once I was actually able to figure them out. Beyond that, there's nothing that stands out to say that I like, let alone that I like "BEST". It gets the job done, but I can't say it happens in an efficient manner. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** Not at all intuitive. I'm also unaware of how to save the report information I want to pull each month so that I don't have to re-type everything each time. It just has a very outdated feel to it. **Recommendations to others considering Ellucian Student:** Look elsewhere. Colleague is not the software for you. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** I'm pulling financial reports and information on students. I'm not sure there are any benefits other than the keyboard shortcuts that make it a bit easier/faster to use. ### 40. Remembering all of the codes to find the right screen is tedious - I always have to look up lesser-used codes. Also frustrating is having to look up three different screens per student to find all of the information I need. The interface is DEFINITELY not intuitive. **Recommendations to others considering Ellucian Student:** Compare all other options. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are a career services office in a university. We use Banner information to keep our office database up to date, as well as verify eligibility. ### 41. I like that it's internet based, so I can access off campus. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** Obviously Banner has a learning curve. I wish the interface could be updated to look a little less ancient. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** As someone who has used OTHER systems I think Banner is more automated and easier to upload information. ### 42. An example of this has been the new loan origination form. There have been issues pulling in CIP codes, attaining Common Origination and Disbursement acceptance and making simple changes. **Recommendations to others considering Ellucian Student:** My advice is to utilize Banner for what it is intended - not what you want it to be. Customization causes issues when upgrading or installing new patches. Banner is a POWERHOUSE software and has a lot of capabilities. Have your list of needs clearly defined and request that the consultant provide you with the Banner resolution. Northeastern uses Xtender, COGNOS and the CRM product. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** In the Financial Aid Office it is critical that assigning workload is smooth for advisors to complete verification, anticipate a correct budget and award package and award loans. Creating population selections are very easy for a functional user without the need of University Technology Services. The Financial Aid Office at Northeastern has been able to streamline assignment of workload, automating Title IV authorization, updating receipt of high school transcripts from the admission side and include developmental coursework in calculation academic progress standards. ### 43. We have two modules implemented, and it required a DBA being allocated fully for 3 months. I use it to check a student's grades and sometimes it's hard to tell what their status is or what grades they need to remediate. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** See above. This is not always user friendly. It's hard to tell what a student's status is - the courses they hae taken are out of order - and I still have to go through everything manually. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use Datatel to assist students, check their graduation date, check their GPA, etc. ### 49. Most functions seem intuitive to a person with a moderate level of understanding of current-day technology. Support for the Ellucian/Banner system has been great, thus far. For colleges/universities looking to replace their student data systems, this platform should be one worth considering. **What do you dislike about Ellucian Student?** While many of the functions seem intuitive, the interface could be updated to reflect a more contemporary appearance. I think that would alleviate some of the occasional challenges encountered with the system, especially functions that are not used on a regular basis. **Recommendations to others considering Ellucian Student:** While I do not know what Ellucian/Banner plans on doing in the future with their product, I believe a few end-user refinements could make this an exceptional student data system. **What problems is Ellucian Student solving and how is that benefiting you?** This system allows us to look at student data from various vantage points. We can use it to tackle problems related to enrollment to addressing challenges with enrollment processes and procedures.
