  ### 1. Kubernetes-Native Postgres Operator That Fits GitOps/CI-CD Workflows

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Manav M. | System Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 09, 2026

**What do you like best about EDB Postgres AI for CloudNativePG?**

Oracle compatibility and declarative database management fit cleanly into modern GitOps/CI-CD workflows. For me, it’s the combination of deep Postgres expertise baked into a truly Kubernetes-native operator, rather than a Postgres tool that feels awkwardly adapted for containers.

**What do you dislike about EDB Postgres AI for CloudNativePG?**

Logical replication during major upgrades still has real gaps. Although the upgrade path has improved, there are notable limitations, so schema changes, sequences, and LOBs often need to be handled manually as part of the upgrade process.

EDB Postgres Extended is also notably restricted for teams running on ARM-based infrastructure, which reduces the available options. These architecture constraints limit flexibility: all nodes in a Kubernetes cluster must use the same CPU architecture, so hybrid CPU-architecture Kubernetes clusters are not supported.

**What problems is EDB Postgres AI for CloudNativePG solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Less infrastructure overhead, fewer outages, and simpler day-to-day database operations—especially for teams already running Kubernetes. It also helps reduce downtime by providing automatic, continuous backup and restoration with near-zero data loss, along with fast, efficient switchover from replicas. Finally, it helps eliminate VM sprawl.

3) Strong alignment between AI initiatives and the data platform.

4) Operational simplicity that makes day-to-day work easier for DevOps teams.

**What do you dislike about EDB Postgres AI for CloudNativePG?**

1. Complexity for Smaller Teams

While powerful, this stack can feel heavy for small development teams, simple apps without strict SLAs, or projects that don’t need fully Kubernetes-native database operations. In those cases, some teams end up spending more time on configuration and platform work than on building application features.

2. Steeper Learning Curve

Because it blends PostgreSQL internals, Kubernetes operators and CRDs, and cloud-native tooling, new users often need training or prior experience across all three areas. That combination can slow onboarding and make it harder to get productive quickly.

3. Resource Overhead

Running a full Kubernetes-native PostgreSQL setup (even with automation) generally requires more compute and network resources than a simple managed database, plus careful planning around storage classes, affinities, and node sizing. As a result, it’s not always the most cost-efficient choice for lightweight workloads.

4. Ecosystem Support Can Be Mixed

Although the Cloud native pg operator is solid, some third-party tools or monitoring integrations don’t work as seamlessly out of the box as they do with mainstream managed services (e.g., AWS RDS or Azure Database for PostgreSQL). Certain extensions or edge use cases can also require extra validation or tuning.

5. Vendor & Feature Expectations

EDB adds enterprise features, but those enhancements can come with licensing or support tiers, and the full benefit isn’t always free or open source. Teams evaluating “Postgres AI” features should carefully confirm what’s included versus what sits behind commercial plans.

How EDB Postgres AI Helps

It automates backups, point-in-time recovery, and replication. It integrates with Kubernetes storage and orchestration primitives, and it handles failover and election processes more seamlessly.

Benefit

You get higher resilience with less manual intervention during outages, plus faster recovery with more predictable behavior.

4) Problem: Operational Overhead for Dev & Ops Teams

Without a unified solution, teams end up juggling multiple tools: separate schedulers, monitoring stacks, custom scripts for backups, and manual scaling plans.

How This Stack Helps

Everything is managed through Kubernetes APIs, and it integrates with existing cloud-native tooling (metrics, logs, GitOps). This reduces context switching and keeps operations more consistent.

Benefit

Teams gain consistency and predictability, especially in multi-cluster or multi-environment setups. Support for GitOps patterns also improves auditability and reproducibility.

5) Problem: Emerging Workloads (AI, Analytics) Want More

Modern applications—especially those involving data analytics, AI/ML, and real-time insights—place new demands on databases.

How “Postgres AI” Fits In

It enables AI/ML-friendly workflows, supports emerging extensions and vector-like data patterns, and positions Postgres as a more multi-purpose data platform.

Benefit

You can build data-rich applications without switching to entirely new stores. It can also simplify architecture by using PostgreSQL as a single source for relational and analytical data.

Overall Benefit Summary

Hard Kubernetes Postgres ops: less manual work, more automation.
Lack of enterprise features: a more secure, performant, and supported database.
Complex backups and DR: better resilience and quicker recovery.
Disjointed operational tooling: more unified workflows and GitOps compatibility.
Modern application demands: a more future-ready data platform foundation.

How This Benefits You (or Your Team)

There’s less firefighting because many routine tasks are automated. Reliability improves because you can trust the database more in production. Delivery is faster because developers spend more time on features and less on ops. Scalability is smoother as applications grow, and teams align better because Dev, Ops, and SRE can share the same workflows.

  ### 14. Postgres for Kubernetes - an efficient way of operating DBs

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Simon R. | IT Operations Expert, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 29, 2025

**What do you like best about EDB Postgres AI for CloudNativePG?**

We do not need to setup another VM for each Workload requiring a Relational DB. Setting up a EDB CNP is really easy now. Just by the input of some basic properties the operator spins up a Postgres Cluster on it's own and in combination with the ClusterImageCatalog patching the Clusters is very easy since the operator is conducting a rolling restart of the pods on its own on updating the Catalog. We also like the many options the Operator already provides in configuring the Postgres Cluster.
Cudos also to the Operator which has become much more stable since we started initially ~2 years ago.

**What do you dislike about EDB Postgres AI for CloudNativePG?**

We are still missing major upgrades on the Clusters in a user friendly way. I know there is progress on EDB's Development making customers life more easy, but we are still eagerly awating it. The current solution based on replicating data to a new cluster with a higher major version is far to complicated and time consuming for a bunch of Clusters.
Besides we are missing the ClusterImageCatalog formerly provided here https://raw.githubusercontent.com/EnterpriseDB/docker-postgresql/refs/heads/main/image-catalogs/ClusterImageCatalog-ubi9.yaml
It was very handy to pull this Catalog and apply it to the Cluster using Terraform and with that triggering the operator to patch all Clusters.

**What problems is EDB Postgres AI for CloudNativePG solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We do not need to setup a dedicated VM or even more than one VM for every database. This is lowering the effort to patch it regularly e.g.
Thanks to EDB we can spin up a cluster for every single application reducing the dependencies and complexity when it comes to organise DB maintenance on one single DB with just Schemas in the past

  ### 15. Excellent PostgresSQL processing exchaning Data with other system
