It's very difficult to recover eclipse if update fails. It's very mature bug still unsolved. Eclipse's internal build system for c++ changes configuration by itself. I like the control clicking ability that takes you to other functions. The library support is great, if you have access to these libraries. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about Eclipse? Using a C++ compiler in Eclipse Mars works, by the definition, but is slow, and doesn't work nearly as well as in CLion. The Dark Mode Theme is complete trash, I had to adjust many options because you couldn't see the annotations when you click on a variable name the highlighted same names were invisible. ADA language support and in app setup and build process is quite a task to get to actually work. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. Recommendations to others considering Eclipse: Don't use it. choose another IDE that works better. Even the newer versions of Eclipse have a myriad of bugs and vulnerabilities that should be looked at. And those are some of the reasons that our security has yet to approve them. What problems is Eclipse solving and how is that benefiting you? I don't solve business problems, I am a coder monkey that writes code for the defense industry. I benefit from it because it's the only IDE we can use, so it's what we use. The other, better, newer IDE's are not approved by security (yet) so this is what were stuck with. The best i can say for eclipse is that its community has good overall support when a bug strikes. You are sure to find a reference or a similar report on the bug which you encounter and most probably the community will have answers to help you out with it. Many things 1) The plugin system feels overcomplicated and takes a lot of time to start with new projects. 2) With the already high audience of sublime and its simplistic experience for beginners and experts alike, it feels more comfortable than the clunky view based system(i know its customizable) which makes its experience pretty bad. 3) Its usually the small things that eclipse gets wrong making the experience more awkward. Taking a break from coding to find out what broke in the IDE is something you dont want to focus on and with Eclipse it seems 20% of your time might be spent googling eclipse problems. Recommendations to others considering Eclipse: I would say if you are in the experimenting phase try eclipse out and compare it with other IDEs depending on the language you will be coding in, there is a chance that you might like eclipse because of its functionality. For others using the top programming languages like C++, Python, etc. i would suggest anything else would be better for the ease of use or comfortable experience. Not a business problem but i extensively used to use Eclipse IDE in my UNI, for different type of projects. At that point i had not tried many other IDEs and so i was restricted to Eclipse but it did have some benefits. The handling of workspaces is good(not the best but good). It is relieable and relatively stable. The IDE interface has changed little over time, so finding everything is quite easy, once you familarize yourself with it. It has poor support for newer and non mainstream source control repositories. It takes forever to load, forever to compile and the learning curve is quite high. Customizing the software through its menu is a nightmare, that rarely ends well. Adding mods or packages is a pain. package support feels like it was bolted on afterthought. Android studio is better suited to the intricacies of mobile and other languages generally have better official support and a definitive set of modern libraries and official IDEs that cater to and support those capabilities in a more holistic way. The Eclipse platform is the core of all Eclipse based applications and plugins. Improvements to the platform benefit us all. Recommendations to others considering Eclipse: Eclipse offers a completely new way to download and work with the IDE. Instead of downloading each package individually, the Eclipse installer by Oomph allows you to choose the installation you wish in the new Mars version. If you want to program in java, you should use Jetbrains software. It is not free but it is better, you will love it. The best of Eclipse is the price. It is totally free so if you have no money to spend, go ahead and use Eclipse (but you will love IntelliJ once you use it) Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. I am sure there are resources out there to help new users navigate. WIthout this, it was quite difficult to figure out some basic things and required an extensive Google search. What problems is Eclipse solving and how is that benefiting you? It is easy to collaborate with others because it syncs pretty seamlessly with tools like GitHub. The business problem we are solving is developing software. Eclipse has a lot of great features that I am sure more experienced developers are benefitted from. As a first time user of the IDE, I did not find it easy to work with or to navigate. It was also quite slow, but this may have something to do with the other programs being run simultaneously and other external factors. Overall with some extensive usage of the IDE, I think it would be quite beneficial to most of my company. It works better than Visual Studio which is always a plus. Eclipse being an IDE provides support for auto-completion, coloured text, a built-in debugging system, and everything that a standard IDE nowadays must have. It is free so if you need an IDE that works and doesn't put a hole in your pocket, Eclipse is an IDE that you could use. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about Eclipse? Eclipse is slow. It is slower than the IDE I now use for Java development, IntelliJ IDEA. The IDE sometimes would stop dead on its tracks and would just suddenly freeze. When I am typing fast, Eclipse would freeze suddenly and would take sometime before it could resume. This could stem from the fact that Eclipse requires that you have a quite beefy machine to handle it. It utilizes a lot of RAM. IntelliJ IDEA does freeze sometimes. However, its freezes are more bearable than that of Eclipse's. Another aspect that I dislike about Eclipse is its GUI. I have a high preference for software that have well-designed GUIs. Unfortunately, Eclipse is not one. It practically looks like a random mishmash of panels and GUI elements that doesn't really look pleasant to look at. Darcula is a theme I love using. I tried to use it in Eclipse when I found out that it is available for the IDE. When I tried it out, the GUI didn't look appealing and out of whack. The GUI elements did not look good and consistent with the theme. For context, I am using Ubuntu as my primary operating system. Deploying your Java project to a JAR file is made tedious by Eclipse. You have to set up multiple things such as the main class and resources before you can export a JAR. However, most of the time, the generated JAR file will not point to the main class and resources which makes it frustrating. It would some more dabbling before you can get a working JAR file. Recommendations to others considering Eclipse: If you have a beefy machine with a lots of RAM and you can bare its GUI and you don't have much of a budget, you could consider using Eclipse.
