Eclipse AspectJ is one of the open source Eclipse technology project that can be used to develop and test scalable aspect oriented java projects. I have used Aspect concepts which includes cross-cutting concerns, pointcut, abstraction coding. It provides feature to write logs and can be customized for authentication process. It comes up with multiple open source tutorial for understanding and implementation. We also used Aspect for resolving optimistic database lock issues, It was helpful for resolving such complicate issue which needs out of the box features to fix it. Recommendations to others considering Eclipse AspectJ: If you are in Java ecosystem and planning to customize authentication and logging operations then do use the AspectJ in your product. I was trying to create a customize annotation based logging framework which will log all request and response out of an API and dynamic logging can be done and traced using Splunk. In order to create a rock solid product, you will come across many issues which needs aspect oriented approach to resolve them. We also created Authentication framework using AOP and were able to reduce the cross-cutting concern for our application. Aspect has been used across our application to take care of Package, Classes and source code scanning for performing Business use cases. We were able to handle logging interception, Exception Handling, Oauth security filters across the application using Aspect Oriented Programming. It reduces the manual effort and makes complex functionality simple. We were able to handle the business requirement at runtime and hence at the application boot up most of the things can be done. Although it is considered as one of the powerful mechanism of programming but more features needs to be added which include visibility of private member variable can be simplified further and hence will make things easier. We were building one of the Application for Security domain and used Aspect feature for overcoming multiple cross-cutting concerns. We made our application more efficient and were able to integrate features using Spring Boot. It will result in less code and access to different methods/variable from any part of application. Senior Software Engineer Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.) 1/27/2021 "A must have tool for instrumentation" 4/5 What do you like best about Eclipse AspectJ? There’s not much you can’t do with AspectJ. We use it to add our logic into complete applications without changing their code (how awesome is that !). It provides a simple-enough API to perform otherwise difficult tasks (like byte code manipulation). Performing instrumentation without AspectJ would make us spend lots of time and resources, so we could say that it is a must for one of the core aspects of our application. Another great thing about AspectJ is the fact that most of the times it works out of the box. This is quite amazing because it's ~15 years old, but runs well even with current tech. We had to fork it and add custom functionality which wasn’t the easiest. Debugging can also be hard, since the implementation is not simple and has multiple mechanisms that should be taken into account (like cache). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. Recommendations to others considering Eclipse AspectJ: Read the documentation! It explains quite well how to use their API which will save you time. We use AspectJ for instrumentation. The ability to “wrap” specific business logic in complete applications without altering it is something that is a must have feature for us, and AspectJ does it very well. Another benefit is the relatively easy API AspectJ provides. AspectJ is a very strong programming technique that allows to define pointcuts for cross-cutting concerns. It allows to define pre / post / around method hooks for validation, logging, tracing, exception handling, enriching / redacting input or output parameters etc. It is powerful, but should be used very carefully. AspectJ hooks are usually defined by expert-level programmers and may be hidden from the mid-level programmer's eye. This can cause several issues like performance, unexpected behaviour (magic), uncertainty, etc 2. Due to the nature of pointcut hooks, AspectJ affects the code readability. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. Recommendations to others considering Eclipse AspectJ: 1. Aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is a very strong and advanced development technique. Not recommended for junior developers. 2. AOP should not be overused. It doesn't compliments Object-oriented-programming (OOP), but adds some powerful options to keep reusable code in one place. Some people might have the impression I'm saying AOP is something bad and should not be used. It is wrong. AOP is actually a great feature. I just say "Use it carefully". Logging, Tracing and Debugging - the benefit is to have a configurable logging levels and upon turning a lower level, AspectJ allows to see the whole flow of processing using, for example, the method entry / exit log messages. What problems is Eclipse AspectJ solving and how is that benefiting you? We decoupled jpa transaction configurations and authentication from our service layer through AspectJ keeping it's cohesion. It worked very well as it was used internally for all projects. The only problem that we have found is that heavy reliance on AspectJ for centering all common based features might be a stretch and all the features delegated to AOP need some ponderation.
