What do you like best about Dovetail?
Dovetail was extremely easy to implement and very straight-forward. We could start using it from the very first moment. The team just spent some hours watching some tutorials and we agreed on some standarisation. This is something that we continuously review.
As researcher in the user research team, I'm using Dovetail at the very least on a weekly basis.
With Dovetail I am much more efficient doing my tasks and more effective with my responsabilities:
Research analysis.
I can analyse single research sessions very effectively thanks to the quick transcription and all tagging features.
The quality of my analysis has increased since I can easily find, visualise and identify relevant highlights to draw my conclusions, create insights or share specific moments with stakeholders.
The different hightlights views (board, table, canvas...) are super useful. Particularly the canvas and the automatic hightlight grouping. This saves me lots of time in projects where I have to work with a lot of data as I can start doing my analysis with a baseline and I can do affinity mapping in a very visual way.
Documentation
In the team we were looking for a tool where all research could be easily documented and work as research repository. We have achieved that thanks to the insights features and notes/ insights fields. Now we can easily find past calls and research findings. All research projects are in one place and all it's content is available.
Search
Not only the researchers are searching for content but now that we've been using it for more than a year and we have enouch content, we see that other product people (designers, product managers, data insights, programe managers...) are using the tool to look for insights. The powerful search allows to search for anything.
Sharing research findings
Dovetail is also serving another key responsability of the user research team. We can now do more appealing research reports and create atomic insights. They are not only well documented and findable but it's easy for us to share specific learnings or session moments in Slack, presentations, meetings, etc.
It has helped to give visibility to the rest of the organisation what the user research team does and how it can contribute and is awakening the interest of other teams into looking for research insights.
In summary, it has increased our productivity and is supporting us in key aspects to grow our team maturity and impact. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
What do you dislike about Dovetail?
Nothing that I dislike but there are some things I wished they were improved:
- Transcription is still not good in many cases with non native-speakers. In some cases, we still have to spend a lot of time ammending transcriptions. Hopefully the transcription models will keep improving over time. If that would improve, it would have a big impact in our productiviy.
- Note and insight editing and format options could be better. There are no indexes and some formating options are a bit limited.
- More capabilities to manage the fields. single-select or multi-select fields can grow organically and get difficult to manage or become unuseful. It'd be great if we could somehow control or manage them, similar to tags.
- Content search is still challenging to stakeholders. Although I see there are some improvements coming thanks to AI
- Integration with product board. I wish we could have the ability to fill in some product board insight fields, right now we can only edit the tags. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
