Overly Aggressive Blocking Makes Critical Websites Unusable **Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Verified User in Manufacturing | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** October 16, 2025 **What do you like best about DNSFilter?** nothing, see what i don't like answer , because there is not liked about it **What do you dislike about DNSFilter?** It has a terrible blocking list; it blocks sites that should not be blocked URLs used and required for websites at Microsoft Azure to work on a continuing basis. It will blocks CSS and JavaScript includes, and sometimes it blocks AJAX calls, making it impossible to use the website. It will block updates downloads for software that is well-known and from major software vendors. It is so bad I have had to disable it so I can work with the issue. We have a rule now, "if something doesn't work and it uses the internet, then kill DNSFilter and then see if it works." ; 99% of the time it does After a support ticket, I can tell they don't understand the basics of how DNS lookups works. **What problems is DNSFilter solving and how is that benefiting you?** it is suppose to blcok bad sites and it does but it also blocks and causes issues with good websites and web applications. **Official Response from Serena Raymond:** > Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Overall bad experience **Rating:** 0.5/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** February 28, 2024 **What do you like best about DNSFilter?** The DNS filtering seems to work great when all of the pieces are in order. That said, this has been such a painful experience that I wouldn't recommend it to anyone with even slightly advanced use cases in ther environment. It may work well for very simple deployments, but that has not been our experience. **What do you dislike about DNSFilter?** Extremely lacking and sometimes woefully inaccurate documentation (I pointed some of these issues out and they never fixed them). Slow release cadence (their relay hasnt been updated since 2019!??!). Slow and generally unhelpful support. We have had several issues open with them for months. You're lucky to get 2 replies from them a day. I kicked this up to our account manager, and we got better support for about a day. They will happily sit on a 3 month old ticket and only update you if you reach out. Pretty apalling for a paid enterprise grade product. EDIT: It appears based on some Linkedin posts that they have been laying people off. My customer support rep blamed a lot of their issues on "turnover", but it sounds to me like these people were forced to leave. With the current state of the economy, and knowing that they've been laying people off, the future of DNSfilter isnt looking very bright. Hindsight being 20-20, I wouldn't touch any of their offerings with a 39.5 foot pole. **What problems is DNSFilter solving and how is that benefiting you?** DNS Level security and filtering **Official Response from Steve Staden:** > We at DNSFilter appreciate you taking the time to point out the issues you encountered. It’s tough to hear this and I assure you that it is atypical of what we expect. Our apologies for not meeting your expectations. I wanted to provide some further details on your points. In relation to the documentation issues and not being updated: We want to acknowledge that and we’re working to both review and make updates to all of our documentation. We have started focusing on our most visited pages. However, if you could share which updates were not made I can look into that further. Regarding the Relay, we acknowledge there haven’t been a lot of updates. However, we’re currently working on a release as we update the Relay packages as noted here - https://dnsfilter.canny.io/known-issues/p/please-update-dnsfilter-relay-vhd-to-newer-ubuntu-release. We expect this to be released in the coming weeks. We are continually enhancing the overall product typically every two weeks as you can see from our Changelog - https://dnsfilter.canny.io/changelog. Lastly, you mentioned a less than ideal support experience. I’m very sorry you had this experience. That’s generally not the case and we are typically very responsive along with making sure we provide regular updates towards a resolution. If you could provide ticket numbers I am happy to look into this further to understand the breakdown that occurred. This could help us all stay on the same page in regards to the popular trends/games the students are into at that time and be a little more proactive for our administration. For example, there was a hit game called surviv.io that was blocked by the gaming policy but could be found at ~10 diff URLs across the web, making it hard to block completely.
