We run finance teams for a large number of high growth SMEs, so we roll Dext out across a whole book of customers rather than a single business. That makes adoption the thing we care about most, and it is where Dext earns its place. Setting up a new customer takes minutes, and the people submitting the paperwork, who are not finance people, pick it up without us having to train them. Extraction on invoices and receipts is accurate enough that what lands in Xero needs very little correction, and statement reconciliation through Dext saves us real time at month end. There is no proper expense management layer with approval workflows, so anything involving employee claims or a sign off chain has to happen outside Dext and then come back in. The second one is VAT review. A Dext extracted amount cannot be reviewed directly against the Xero VAT report (there is a misalignment), so during a VAT recon we double check it on the side to prove the figure. Dext is easy to set up for clients and offers great features, including strong integration with Xero and reliable bank statement extraction. There aren't too many downsides overall. Cost is a factor — it's a meaningful expense for the practice as a whole, though we did trial a competitor and found it wasn't the right fit for us either. On the AI component, we felt we weren't given sufficient time to properly test and evaluate whether it was working well before committing to paying for it — though that's more a reflection on our own internal process than on Dext itself. One other issue we've noticed is that Euro VAT transactions can come through into invoices, and there's no global/overall setting to lock this down or restrict it, which would be a useful control to have. Dext has helped us build a better relationship with our clients by streamlining their bookkeeping processes and reducing manual admin on their end. One prospect was particularly delighted when we introduced them to it, which helped strengthen that relationship from the outset. We've also seen better overall accuracy in the data being processed, which reduces errors and rework. I think one thing I have been wanting, and the Ai tool has partially addressed this, is to be able to set rules for specific account codes rather than just a supplier. For example, if an expense needs coding to Directors Loan Account, I'd love the VAT to default to No VAT. Regarding account-code based rules: our automation currently focuses on supplier-driven logic for settings like tax rates. While AI Assist can intelligently suggest categories or VAT on your Sales and Costs, creating logic specifically triggered by a chosen account code isn't a feature just yet. It makes purchase and sale invoice extraction very easy. It cuts down the time needed to upload records and you dont have to lose any details. The interface is very easy to navigate and everything is layed out in a way that makes sense. Mainly use it as an intergration to xero but have used it for QBO and Sage and it works well! Dext is a feature-rich product compared with other products of its kind. The user interface is easy to navigate, and the bulk feature is very handy. The integration with banks and accounting software makes it seamless to get data into it. I find the quality of the scans, and the way it reads tax rates, values, and other pertinent information, to be class-leading; it consistently outperforms others. The pricing structure is tiered and, in my experience, I pass it on to clients and they are more than happy to pay for it, as they much prefer it to the alternatives. I have used Dext for six years now, and each account manager I have worked with has been very hands-on and has helped me out when required. Whether that’s at shows or on a call, the support is always there. Recently, we’ve been very impressed with the new AI feature, and it has made over 1,000 suggestions to our client base, of which over 900 have been implemented. On Dext Solo feeling clunky, your account manager is the right person to walk through that with you as they can tailor a session to how your clients actually use it day-to-day rather than a generic onboarding run. If you haven't looked at the Practice Insights dashboard recently, it's worth a check as it gives you a clear view of submission volumes and automation adoption across all clients, which at your scale can quickly surface where a bit of attention would have the most impact. We've found Dext to be a valuable addition to our bookkeeping processes. The receipt capture is straightforward and easy for clients to use, whether uploading via the mobile app, email or desktop, and the data extraction is generally accurate, saving a significant amount of manual data entry. The onboarding process is simple and intuitive, making it quick to get both staff and clients up and running. The integration with accounting software also works well, helping to keep records up to date and reducing the amount of paperwork clients need to retain. In terms of performance, Dext is generally reliable and processes documents quickly, although there can occasionally be delays during busier periods. The main downside is the pricing, which we find is on the high side; however that being said we find Dext Solo pricing to be very competitve. This saves our team time, improves accuracy and allows us to process clients' records much more efficiently. It has also made it easier for clients to submit their paperwork throughout the year rather than storing paper receipts until the end of a quarter, resulting in more complete records, fewer missing documents and a smoother bookkeeping process. Dext Solo has been especially helpful for Making Tax Digital (MTD), giving clients a simple way to capture and store receipts digitally throughout the quarter, helping them meet HMRC's record-keeping requirements and making the preparation of quarterly submissions much more efficient. The receipt and invoice capture is really practical, and the integrations with Xero make the whole process much smoother. It’s one of those tools that actually reduces manual work instead of creating extra steps. I also think it’s very user-friendly for accountants which is not always easy to achieve. One thing I dislike about Dext is that the OCR is not always consistent, especially with low-quality receipts or complex invoices, so manual corrections are still needed sometimes. Pricing can also become expensive as usage grows. I also think some workflows could be more flexible, especially when dealing with exceptions or unusual accounting cases. What problems is Dext solving and how is that benefiting you? Dext helps reduce the amount of manual work involved in bookkeeping and invoice processing. Instead of entering data line by line, receipts and invoices can be captured and processed much faster, which saves a lot of time and reduces human error. It also makes document collection and organization easier, especially when working with multiple clients. The integrations with accounting software help keep everything more streamlined and efficient. Regarding the OCR performance on low-quality receipts, ensure documents are flat and well-lit to resolve most extraction gaps; for more flexibility with unusual accounting cases, try utilising supplier rules to manage exceptions without a rigid configuration. On pricing, it is worth discussing your submission volume with an account manager to see if a different bundle offers better value as you grow. The CSV-to-PDF step exists because our engine is optimised for image-based evidence, providing a robust record for audit trails. Finally, to further enhance your efficiency, it is worth exploring AI Assist, as it learns from your historic coding patterns to suggest automations for repetitive tasks while you maintain total control. As both a fractional finance director and an accountant/bookkeeper, I’ve set up Dext for a number of clients—some where the client uses it directly, and others where I use it on their behalf. Clients pick it up very easily, and it improves the quality of their work while also saving them time (often saving multiples of the subscription cost). The new AI Assist should improve accuracy and time savings even further. I've had very limited need for support but Davide Grande has been a great help in seeing what can be achieved with both AI Assist and Dext Solo (for my Making Tax Digital for Tax clients). Supplier rules are very easy to set up, and save a great deal of time as well as improving consistency/accuracy. As a user, it's the best software for inputing invoices & bills that I've used, the processing is quick and I've never experienced any system downtime. I heartily recommend checking this out. I'm an accountant so always fee focused - there are aspects that, due to the size of my clients, that I refrain from using (health scores, line-by-line splitting) that I'd love to see included.
