I like the text-based editing feature, and I find the separate track editing for multi-person recordings useful. The AI sound enhancement feature is something I enjoy as well. A lot of the times the uploads of recordings from their studio didn't work, or I had to rely on backup recordings which were subpar. There is no other piece of software better that allows for text-based video and audio editing. Especially text-based audio editing. It has been the leader of the pack on this since the beginning. This has allowed my channel to grow—while I have experience using pro audio and video software, my team does not, and Descript has allowed them to produce anything from a rough first "paper" edit to the final product. If you are making one-speaker videos, podcasts with multiple speakers, smaller-file video creations, Descript is incredible. They keep adding features that can make your final product look more professional. It was a rough start, but Descript's UX/UI is finally starting to look and feel more solid, too. For the one-person creator, it might be the only tool you need. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about Descript? We have such a love/hate relationship with Descript. We have used it for 4 years, now, and it has always been buggy. Throughout the app's development, the devs will introduce a feature with bugs, then fix those bugs. The feature will work perfectly for a while, and then get broken again in a later update. I applaud the team for trying to add so many features to the app, but would much rather be able to work with a stable product, and even though we use Descript for a huge part of our workflow weekly, we always have eyes on competitors because we have never felt that we could count on the app. Customer support is just OK. They respond, but not quickly, and with the same information that can be found on the website. One thing that is particularly frustrating is its speed. Editing small files in Descript is fine, even multi-track audio. But add more than 2 speakers for a video podcast and you are going to have to be OK with editing with spinning beachballs, unsynced audio, laughably slow scubbing. I have tried everything to make the process easier and better: editing with proxies built in other apps, breaking apart longer recordings, and more. Some of these tricks work, but at that point I realize that I could get the job done much faster in Davinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro. So we use Descript for what it still does best: first draft edits. We try to never mess with creating too many Scenes, b-roll, titles or background audio. Once we have a cut, we export the timeline to another app and finish the job there. It's frustrating, and expensive! Easy project management (especially retrieval of previous versions) and easy removal of most (never all) repeat words. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about Descript? After three years of repeated complaints and requests for improvement, Descript's AI engine still "goes rogue" with the same types of phrases. This is not unique to Descript. I've seen it with other products as well, and they all have a similar response, that the LLM model is always "learning" or "trying to learn" to improve the outcome, and there's no way to control the specific issues I've complained about and "teach" the AI engine to type exactly what it hears. But I don't buy it. Other responses have repeatedly suggested less-than-clear audio is to blame, which has \*never\* been the case. What adds to my angst about this behavior is it doesn't happen 100% of the time, but at least 50% of the time, and these particular issues are patterns that cannot be overcome with macros or other editorial clean-up automation because you do not know which are incorrect until you listen to the audio. It greatly slows down the proofing-to-audio process to have to correct these issues that are not "listening errors" but rogue AI decisions. In no particular order of importance: "OF" WITH DATES: Spoken: "January 1st of 2021" or "January 1 of 2021" Sometimes transcribed: "January 1st, 2021" or "January 1, 2021" ORDINALS ADDED OR REMOVED: Spoken: "January 1st, 2021" Sometimes transcribed: "January 1, 2021" Spoken: "January 1, 201" Sometimes transcribed: "January 1st, 2021" CONTRACTIONS: Spoken: "I haven't heard a response." Sometimes transcribed: "I have not heard a response." Spoken: "I have not heard a response." Sometimes transcribed: "I haven't heard a response." I have recently discovered another AI engine that transcribed these types of phrases with 100% accuracy, using the same audio that had been run through Descript with a 50% or more error rate. So it certainly IS possible to tweak the AI engine to transcribe exactly what is spoken and not what it thinks is better. Another issue I have is the limited usefulness of the Transcription Glossary feature. It does not allow the use of numbers, for starters. In my work, I get a lot of the same words or phrases that include numbers, such as Rule 404(b), which Descripts transcribes as 4 0 4 B or 4 0 4 b. It also seems arbitrary in how it interprets and applies words and phrases in the glossary, applying them some of the time and ignoring them other times when it is clear that it should have. For example, if I know the audio will include many references to "Joann," and I add that to the glossary, I might get 15 instances of "Joann" along with several instances of "Jo Ann" and "Jo Anne." The big carrot that keeps me tied to Descript is the ability to remove duplicate words. It never removes all of them, but it removes enough to greatly reduce the time needed to remove them during proofing. This is not something that can be easily automated, so I continue to give more weight to this feature than I probably should. In the case of the other AI engine that I also use, the carrot in that one is the unlimited upload hours per month feature, which is significant (Descript's subscription model is limited to 30 hours per month). But I am continuously on the lookout for an AI engine that checks all the boxes for transcription accuracy, ease of use, overall cost, and removing repeat words. Being able to sync a transcript to audio is so important and is one of the reasons why I use Descript, but it is so frustrating at times because the app very often cannot accurately detect where the text should go, ESPECIALLY if there are multiple takes (which there always are as we record live in-studio). Before, I was using Adobe Preiere Pro, but given the dense nature of graduate-level videu lectures, editing text as a proxy for editing audio/video content is a game-changer. The transcription used to be excellent but it is not as important to me as it used to be (there are now lots of AI transcription services which do a better job than Descript does, it seems that Descript's transcription quality has deteriorated, it used to be the best). However, the fact that I can SYNC A TRANSCRIPT TO VIDEO/AUDIO is an amazing feature that I have not seen elsewhere and which I use constantly. HOWEVER, it is so rife with inaccuracies and there is so much room for improvement here (for example, if I have multiple takes, the transcript should sync to the LATER take by default, or perhaps it should give me the option to choose which take it should sync to as it's doing it). Bugs were so numerous I felt like we were reporting one every time we used the software, with acknowledgement of the issue from support but no resolution. I use Descript weekly to deliver audio and video podcasts and training videos. Descript delivers three stand-out features that embrace AI for your production workflow: studio sound, automatic transcription with person recognition, and document-based editing. With Studio Sound, nearly any audio recording can sound amazing. With transcriptions, Descript can analyze the audio and determine who the speakers are in your project and create a very good transcript. If you use waveform-based editing for audio using tools like Audacity, Camtasia, and Adobe Audition, you will be hooked with Descript's document-based editor. By modifying the content like a document, you can focus on the content, not the waveforms. The product even offers features to remove filler words and shorten word gaps. You will love the collaboration features if you are an independent producer or work on small teams. You can publish your video so others can see your content and recommend (or make) changes. As of this writing, new AI features are being developed, using large language models (LLMs) to create short clips, chapter titles, show notes, and much more. These are early days, but they seem promising. Descript has a flourishing community on its Discord server and holds weekly open hours for users to learn new features and openly discuss questions with support team members. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about Descript? Originally, Descript was a finely polished gem focused on audio projects, like traditional podcasts. The shift to video projects was a strategic bet that paid off for Descript, but only sometimes for its users. While support is responsive and helpful, you will find small and large bugs that plague the product and a user interface that changes frequently. Descript ships with animations, but users expecting "pro" or even "mid-level" features from products such as After Effects, Camtasia, Keynote, or PowerPoint will be disappointed. If you use animations in your project, you may use two or more products to finalize your project. Descript allows you to add video templates to brand your project. Still, users will find the video editor to be maddeningly unusable. Selecting an object may move or resize it, you cannot zoom to make granular edits, and layouts can often change when using certain features. As with any product, implementing Descript into your workflow as a new user will have a learning curve. However, you may still find the ongoing steps required to import media, get started, and bring your project to production to be onerous. If you must rush your project out for delivery and expect a what-you-see-is-what-you-get experience, you will want to export locally to your computer. Unfortunately, the export times are uncommonly slow. Even on a powerful pro-level machine, output with products like Premiere Pro takes 15-20 minutes and Camtasia 45 minutes. Descript can take up to 2 hours or more. These are not official numbers in a clean testing environment, but it is my experience and I regularly share my experience with them. Descript recommends a cloud-publishing solution, but the tradeoffs for a final production may or may not work for your situation (they do not work for my purposes). I have only used the Premiere Pro export function to integrate other products. That integration does not include essential project characteristics such as speakers, transcripts, video layers, and audio settings, so do not expect a full integration.
