The AI Avatar/Underlord features are unreliable and the support process for resolving billing issues caused by those failures is worse. I spent days trying to produce one usable video. Underlord gave contradictory instructions throughout — each suggested fix created a new problem. AI credits were charged for Avatar generations that never completed. I brought in an outside AI consultant for a full day of dedicated work, and even she couldn't produce a working result on the platform. Support did acknowledge the failures initially: they processed a $400 refund and offered an additional $545.48, which I accepted in writing. The $400 arrived. The text-based video editing feature was disappointing because when I removed a word, the video would cut several words before and after, making it unusable. The core promises of the software were not fulfilled, and my investment felt wasted. Additionally, attempting to use the AI feature for generating blogs was frustrating since the generated content disappeared and couldn't be found later. What do you dislike about Descript? I have a hard time with the learning curve for Descript. The subscription plans are confusing and there's no credit for unused subscriptions if I upgrade. The customer service is basically non-existent, just an AI bot. Some features require the business plan, like using my own branding assets, and I can't upload some video formats. The onboarding process isn't great, and I think they should provide more material for new users. Initially, I most liked that I could remove filler words as my co-host and I were getting used to speaking less in "umms" and "likes." What do you dislike about Descript? How significantly it has gone downhill in about a year of use. EVBRY single time I log in to use it, there is "a new version of descript" and it consistently gets less effective, harder to navigate, and slower. The primary need I had for this tool was transcription and removing filler words but it's not even properly transcribing those words anymore, nor identifying the correct speakers. Downloads take hours (on 2GB hardwired fiber so not the internet) when they should take minutes. Publishing functions are not granular enough and lack real control. They also outright lied about their new pricing (which is published on their site) when I tried to cancel, effectively trying to scare me into staying. This had the opposite impact. I came across this service and asked a client to go ahead and record a meeting in Greek, thinking I could use this service to translate. A 1 hour 35 minute audio file was uploaded and i paid for 2 hours. They also said I would receive 30 minutes free. Great. It transcribed into Greek text, useless to me because I don't speak Greek but that's why I was using their system, clicked 'Translate" and got this: "You need more time. 54 minutes 42 seconds remaining, to continue translating this transcript you need to have 1 hour 35 minutes 17 seconds." That is NOT how their pricing is described. I paid for 2 hours translation, not just Greek text. Also on G2 I see their pricing as $5 per hour, no they charge $10 per hour and apparently you have to pay for the tranascription and then pay the same again for the translation, so it's actually $20 per hour. On the surface, Descript is a great tool. It allows those of us that aren't super video and audio savvy to make nice content in an easy way and shores up a lot of shortcomings for things like audio quality that plague content creation in the business world these days. Descript has a number of great features like "studio sound", automated transcription, editing via script, and these are all excellent features and worthy of praise because there's nothing quite like it on the market right now. Let me be very clear. When Descript works, it's AWESOME. We use it daily and heavily to the tune of nearly 100 hours a month. When Descript doesn't work, it's incredibly frustrating and it costs me a ton of money. The ability to collaborate to make changes and to bring on additional users is also generally very easy. Scalability is nice and easy, plus it's a widely recognized platform. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about Descript? - on the fly, unannounced updates that will invalidate your old projects and make accessing them difficult on a regular basis because of version mismatches. - overbearing pushing of their acquisition of Squadcast. - Difficult to access help and out of date help articles. The development on this goes so fast they sometimes don't even update the patch page within a week. - Dismissive of customer concerns - Customer service is kind, but often are ineffective, generally relying on the "oh hey we just patched that..." excuse. - Descripts transcription creation and file exporting functions are not 100% reliable, so I get billed for time I use that's useless. No remedy has ever been offered for this from Descript. - The above discord community area for discussin bugs was promptly closed down at the first of the year 2024 and the community was switched over to a "wow we're so great here at descript." The community is now useless unless you want to sing their praises. - The moment anothe product like Descript comes out that has similar features, we're done with Descript. - Descript has had bouts of unreliability so frequently that I've spent nearly 5 figures paying for things to be redone by my team that are not their fault, but rather a result of Descript's programming being buggy and unreliable when asked to execute a task like exporting a video. Your feedback on reliability issues and performance is completely valid, and we're taking this on the chin. These are major focus areas for our team in 2024, and we're on track to make significant improvements. I feel hopeful that your experience will improve in the next few months as we focus here and continue to grow the team working on this. A few things I want to note—we now have a team member dedicated to managing our releases and communicating via the changelog, so updates there are always in step with our releases. As for Discord, I can speak to this more specifically as I'm on the community team; the Discord is not closed and it remains the right place to share bugs and concerns. Due to feedback from server members and the need to scale conversations as we neared 20,000 members, we changed the structure of the channels, from chat style to threaded forum style. The content of the Discord has remained the same. In the one year I have been using Descript I have NOT ONCE been able to export my video files without a hassle. This basic, essential feature of a video editing app just seems too muh for descript too handle. Whether I'm trying to export a 20 minute or a 60 second video - the app crashes, or the export will just stop, Their publishing feature which is supposed to e faster is utter garbage too - doesn't work half of the time. Customer service is non-existent, First it takes them DAYS to reply, and then their replies are not even helpful in the slightest. Not to mention a myriad of all the other annoying bugs - like app crashing mid-editing, being SUPER slow - slower than Adobe Premier Pro ever was.
