**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Faseeh A. | Team Lead, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 06, 2025

**What do you like best about Debian?**

Debian is one of the most stable and secure Linux distributions I’ve ever used. The package management system (APT) is smooth and efficient, and the availability of thousands of precompiled packages makes setup and maintenance effortless. Its long-term support and community-driven development make it an ideal choice for servers and production environments. I also appreciate that Debian forms the foundation for many other popular distributions like Ubuntu, which speaks volumes about its reliability.

**What do you dislike about Debian?**

While Debian’s stability is unmatched, it sometimes comes at the cost of having slightly older software versions compared to rolling-release distributions. Setting up certain proprietary drivers or multimedia codecs may require additional steps, which can be a bit challenging for new users. However, once configured, the system runs flawlessly.

**What problems is Debian solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Debian solves the problem of maintaining a secure, stable, and customizable operating system for both servers and desktops. It eliminates dependency issues through its robust package management system and ensures long-term reliability with predictable release cycles. For me, it has greatly reduced downtime and maintenance overhead in server environments. The strong community support and extensive documentation also make troubleshooting and automation tasks much easier, allowing me to focus more on development and less on system stability concerns.

  ### 4. Best operating System

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Shib Nath D. | Security analyst, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 16, 2024

**What do you like best about Debian?**

With the Stable branch guaranteeing a dependable and error-free experience over five years of everyday usage, Debian offers unparalleled stability. Installing and updating software is easy thanks to its extensive repository and APT package management.

**What do you dislike about Debian?**

I enjoy the stability.

The fact that apps that depend on third-party services are outdated and frequently unable to connect or operate at all without requiring an external package manager to obtain the most recent version is something I detest.
It seems unlikely that these two things will ever work well together.

**What problems is Debian solving and how is that benefiting you?**

With its unparalleled stability, extensive software library, and exceptional customizability, Debian offers a dependable and adaptable operating system for both home and business use. It lowers downtime, streamlines software maintenance, and easily adjusts to different contexts.

**Reviewed by:** Hamza S. | Software Developer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**What do you like best about Debian?**

Package Management - This is by far the best thing about Debian. It uses the APT (Advanced Package Tool) package manager, which simplifies software installation, updates, and dependency management. The vast Debian repositories offer a wide range of software packages.

Flexibility - It offers different flavors to cater to various needs due to its ease of implementation. Whether you're looking for a lightweight system (like Debian Minimal) or a specialized distribution (like Debian Edu or Debian GIS), there is likely a Debian variant suited to your requirements.

Integration - Due to its well built infrastructure, the most popular Linux OS called Ubuntu is based on it!

Community - It has a large and active community of users and developers. This means ample customer support through forums, mailing lists, and extensive documentation.

Usage Frequency - It is found on a vast majority of servers.

**What do you dislike about Debian?**

Limited Official Support for Non-Free Software - It strictly adheres to free software principles, which means it has limited official support for proprietary or non-free software.

Slower Release Cycle - While the stability of Debian is a strength, its slower release cycle means users may have to wait longer for new features or software updates compared to distributions with more frequent releases.

**What problems is Debian solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Debian ensures I have a stable and secure platform for my local wireless network monitoring tasks due its ready to go drivers available to provide me low level hardware access. Its reliability, security features, flexibility, and broad hardware compatibility allow me to run monitoring tasks smoothly, customize my setup as needed, and ensure compatibility with my network hardware, enabling seamless use of tools like Wireshark and others.

I have been using Debian desktop and server for a while, I have used aarch ARM64 version on embedded devices as well.

my experience with Debian against other well-known distros was quite satisfactory and comes with all the development tools needed for, neved any issue with package updates.

One notable advnatage of Debian is its integration with Yocto which is now widely uses in many embedded communities and it's quite straightforward to customize the dirsto based on the hardware requirements.

It's one of the best distro to use as a general purpose activity or even development enviroment quite easy and straightforward installation too.

It can be run on just about anything. We have plenty of old computers to continue running Windows, but found new lives running as Debian-based servers.

**What do you dislike about Debian?**

**What problems is Debian solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We need to use Docker to run most of our applications. Debian is the most efficient way to run these Docker containers. Also, we have old computers that do very well when running Debian as a CLI-only OS.

There is Debian Social Contract which means that Debian will always serve its users and not investors. Debian is not affiliated with any company. Debian is faster as compared to Ubuntu.

**What do you dislike about Debian?**

I dislike Debian because of APT and the fact that it tends to do way too many things behind your back, things that sometimes backfire horrendously as soon as you stray too much from the path Debian dug .

Debian has some of the fastest and reliable operating systems. Being from cybersecurity background, I use Kali Linux extensively. Every tools needed for penetration testing and vulnerability hunting are right there in the table top.

**Reviewed by:** Anshu S. | Information Technology and Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 08, 2023

**What do you like best about Debian?**

A standout aspect of Debian lies in its unwavering dedication to open-source principles and its robust collection of software packages. The extensive availability of diverse software options renders Debian highly favored by users who prioritize system reliability and the freedom to tailor their setups according to their preferences..

**What do you dislike about Debian?**

It's not about dislike but the area of improvement is that the Debian arises from its strong emphasis on stability and comprehensive testing, which can occasionally result in a lag when incorporating the latest, cutting-edge software features. This stands in contrast to distributions prioritizing swift updates, potentially dissuading users who seek immediate access to the most recent software innovations.

**What problems is Debian solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Debian serves as a remedy for individuals in search of an operating system that prioritizes stability, dependability, and the ability to personalize. Its unwavering dedication to open-source values guarantees user autonomy and a transparent software environment.

**What do you like best about Debian?**

Debian remains one of my favorite Linux Gnome environments as you are given the power to configure it to your specific needs, rather than being filled with extras that other distros like Ubuntu have.

**What do you dislike about Debian?**

The software of Debian can be a little older than that of other distros but can be easily overcome by installing Snap apps. It also isn't the most beginner friendly distro and requires some working knowledge of Linux systems.

The outstanding and reliable position of Debian is exceptional. For computing needs, whether for personal desktop or critical server environments, Debian provides a rock-solid foundation. One can rely on Debian to do the job without a doubt thanks to its testing it succeeds because of his dedication to free and open source software.

**What do you dislike about Debian?**

Its conservative release cycle is one aspect of Debian that I find most undesirable. Although balance is undoubtedly a good thing, it could occasionally mean that software programmes in Debian repositories are not the most recent versions. This can be a problem if you need new software or advanced features for a particular project. It is crucial to note that Debian's static nature is well-known and properly satisfies the needs of many users.

**What problems is Debian solving and how is that benefiting you?**

By offering outstanding stability and dependability, Debian addresses a major issue in the field of operating systems. Servers and other essential systems are especially in need of this benefit since unanticipated problems and downtime can be expensive and disruptive. Debian's dedication to open-source ideas and thorough testing offer a trustworthy and safe computing environment.

**What do you like best about Debian?**

Debian is a great Linux distro, and since Ubuntu is based on it, you will find many things for those operating systems. It is fast and reliable, with built-in developers tools available.

**What do you dislike about Debian?**

Since Debian is not the most used, it is not so popular and the community is not as big as the Ubuntu's community. I think the UI in Ubuntu is better and more modern, despite they are similar.

**What problems is Debian solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Debian inside Windows Subsystem for Linux to run Docker inside it and has a better performance than running Docker natively in Windows. It helps me to run my local development environment.

**What do you like best about Debian?**

Very stable OS with a huge amount of packaged software. Supported for security issues up to 10 years (LTS + ELTS).

**What do you dislike about Debian?**

Being a community OS it is not backed by a company which can provide official support. In that cases one may want to used Red Hat or other commercial offerings.

**What do you like best about Debian?**

I used the Raspberry Pi device, in which I have used Debian and I felt it is the best to have and work on it. UI is a good and less loaded one. easy to manipulate & work on it with complete functionality.

**What do you dislike about Debian?**

UI needs much more improvement, as when we look for a smart mirror kind of project, we would expect to have a little customisable UI for this OS so that it would be looking good. Other platform has moving ahead of Debian with respect to the UI

**Recommendations to others considering Debian:**

As far I used, If you are going for an internet of things project, need any OS for your microsystem?, then Go for Debian. 👍

**What problems is Debian solving and how is that benefiting you?**

**Reviewed by:** Mohd Tahseen R. | Security Delivery Senior Analyst, Information Technology and Services, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**What do you like best about Debian?**

Tenure is one of Debian's key benefits. It is one of the most renowned and established Linux distributions freely available to the general public and was released more than 20 years ago. Both developers and users can benefit more specifically from this reality.
Because it supports a wide range of architecture, it may be used with both old and modern processors and computer systems. For instance, outdated personal computers that cannot run the most recent Windows versions can be upgraded to Debian.
Additionally, Debian distributes free software. More than 57200 software items are available for free download.

**What do you dislike about Debian?**

According to several detractors, one of Debian's most significant drawbacks is that it is conservative and slow to implement new features already present in other Linux variants and commercial operating systems.
Debian's problem is that it actively excludes non-free software from its official system while retaining a repository of non-free software housed on its primary servers.

**What problems is Debian solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Utilising a free operating system can give businesses financial and competitive advantages. Government agencies, nonprofit organisations, and commercial or for-profit companies worldwide, including banks and software firms, have utilised it.
This Linux Distribution is also excellent for hosting servers due to its software selection and accessibility to the open-source community.

  ### 43. A great overall operating system

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Paolo N. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 17, 2023

**What do you like best about Debian?**

I like the ease of use and installation. It's also an operating system with a great package and software management workflow. Debian is extremely flexible, being usable for personal and professional use, and requires little customization to make everything work. It perfectly balances "out of the box" usability and the ability to tweak every feature in the OS.

**What do you dislike about Debian?**

Sometimes I believe that Debian is too heavy on resources. I can understand this because of the vast array of features and preinstalled software, but it does become an obstacle when you need to run simultaneous processes.

**What problems is Debian solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have a stable operating system that is standard to my whole team, with a vast array of features they need. It also helps my team in terms of compatibility, since we have the same operating system which lowers maintenance cost and times.

**What do you dislike about Debian?**

The bug recognition/scanning tracker is not user friendly and very difficult to work with. TO the extent that it is rendered useless when you'd rather choose to not use it at all.

**What problems is Debian solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Easy to use in segmentation while using multiple applications. Can be used without taking down others. We utilizae it's resource management as a major benefit as well.

  ### 45. Efficient and Reliable

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Prashik K. | Student, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 14, 2023

**What do you like best about Debian?**

It is one of the most outstanding operating systems available today. Its exceptional stability, security, and performance make it an excellent choice for anyone who values a reliable and secure computing experience.

One of Debian's greatest strengths is its robust package management system and vast software repository, which provide users with access to a broad range of software options. This makes it an ideal choice for developers and system administrators who need to work with a variety of different tools and frameworks.

Furthermore, the Debian community is incredibly supportive, and the project's dedication to free and open-source software has helped create a powerful and versatile operating system. The Debian team's commitment to delivering regular updates and security patches ensures that the system is always up-to-date, reliable, and secure, making it an excellent choice for both personal and professional use.

Overall, I would highly recommend Debian to anyone looking for a stable and efficient operating system. Whether you're a developer, a system administrator, or simply someone who wants a secure and reliable platform for everyday use, Debian is an excellent choice that won't disappoint.

**What do you dislike about Debian?**

As someone who has used Debian for several years, I can say that it is an excellent operating system that prioritizes stability and reliability. However, one potential downside is that it may not always have the latest software versions available in its repositories, which could be a disadvantage for users who need access to cutting-edge features and functionality.

Moreover, the installation and configuration process can be quite complex, particularly for new users who are unfamiliar with the Linux environment. Although there are numerous resources available online to help with this, it can still be a steep learning curve.

Overall, despite these potential drawbacks, I strongly believe that the benefits of using Debian far outweigh any downsides. Its robust package management system, extensive software repository, and unwavering commitment to free and open-source software make it an outstanding choice for developers, system administrators, and other users who value stability, security, and reliability in their operating system.

**What problems is Debian solving and how is that benefiting you?**
