Technical Support had various ideas, and every time I called they would suggest reversing the change the previous technician had made. **What problems is Datto SIRIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** I tried to get an automated "set it and forget it" backup solution, but that is not possible with Datto products, according to their customer support. They require me to login every hour to see if the backup succeeded. They don't have a way for me to configure an email notification to tell me when backups fail. ### 41. I would prefer that the on-site unit be such that it can spin up an image for disaster recovery purposes instead of being only cloud-based. The Datto Siris solutions provide exactly this capacity, but the cost is out of reach of many small clients. That is why I use Alto to fill in the gap between Siris and some on-site USB drive that provides only the absolute basic backup capabilities. **What problems is Datto SIRIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** Many clients do not fully understand the repercussions of complete data loss. For this reason you must not only educate them about the need for more than data file copying, but you must be able to offer them a solution they can justify financially . Alto is at least that first step that provides them with some degree of protection, giving you time to formualte a more spohisticated plans like Siris. ### 44. The box is nicely built and was made in Taiwan rather than China. **What do you dislike about Datto SIRIS?** We spent almost a year with the Alto. We tried it on several different computers. Whichever computer was connected to it became slow and bluescreened frequently. It returned to normal operation when we removed the Alto. This experience was repeated on every computer we attached the Alto to. Datto tech support was not very useful. We phoned them up many times about this, and the standard procedure for their phone tech support seems to be to have the customer restart their computer and then switch to email-based support. We went round and round a few times with them and never got any satisfactory resolutions. It makes the "USB Connected" noise every single time it started a backup, and the "USB Disconnected" noise when it finished. This is super annoying, Datto told us there's nothing can be done about it, and it's incredibly disruptive when it's installed on a machine used for voice recording or music production. **Recommendations to others considering Datto SIRIS:** Don't do it. There are less expensive alternatives that actually work and have better tech support. **What problems is Datto SIRIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** We needed a hybrid backup solution because our area has generally poor internet speeds and cloud-only is a struggle for many. As far as benefits, we spent almost a year with the Alto and the best thing we got out of it was a Datto-branded router reset tool (ballpoint pen). It was a giant struggle to cancel the Alto and get it sent back. Datto didn't want us to cancel. We had to tell them in uncertain terms to look at the profitability of keeping us on, when we're DEFINITELY not going to be selling their crap. They finally relented and let us send the unit back. You can't set a custom date range or export a summary. You can get an overview from the portal with number complete versus number attempted for each server, but if you export that report you don't get the summary, just the status of each job. **What problems is Datto SIRIS solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have a service desk with varying skill levels. The Alto 3 is simple enough to use that we can have our tier I techs assist with restoring files for users. We are able to use the Alto3 to take hourly backups of our critical servers and replicate nightly to the Datto cloud. This helps with our goal of disaster preparedness. ### 48. Some helpful features were revoked (such as SNMP) while new features come out without a heads up. **Recommendations to others considering Datto SIRIS:** Datto provides free partner training classes. Be sure to take these and become certified for the best use of all the features they provide. Even today, our company only uses the features we need and the client asks.
