## About SolarWinds Database Observability
SolarWinds Database Observability brings together SolarWinds database monitoring and performance management capabilities for organizations running mixed database estates across on-premises and cloud environments. The portfolio includes self-hosted and SaaS offerings and supports relational, open-source, and NoSQL databases, including SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, Amazon Aurora, Amazon RDS, Azure SQL, and Google Cloud SQL. Designed for database administrators, platform teams, and IT operations teams, SolarWinds Database Observability helps users monitor database health, analyze query performance, troubleshoot waits, blocking, and deadlocks, and investigate performance problems with greater speed and confidence. Across the portfolio, teams can use capabilities such as query analysis, workload profiling, execution plan analysis, historical performance analysis, anomaly detection, alerting, and reporting to identify issues before they become larger operational problems. It also helps teams connect database performance to the wider IT environment by correlating database activity with CPU, memory, disk I/O, and surrounding infrastructure context. Integrations with tools and services such as SolarWinds Service Desk, PagerDuty, ServiceNow, Microsoft Teams, OpsGenie, and webhooks support faster notification, escalation, and response workflows. This broader context is especially useful for organizations trying to reduce troubleshooting silos and improve collaboration between database and infrastructure teams. The primary value of SolarWinds Database Observability is that it gives teams deeper visibility into database behavior across diverse environments while helping them diagnose slowdowns, tune performance, and resolve issues more efficiently. Rather than positioning database monitoring as a secondary add-on, it delivers database-focused depth alongside broader IT context, making it well suited to organizations that need strong database performance management without unnecessary complexity.

## SolarWinds Database Observability Reviews
  ### 1. DPA review

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** dale f. | Director, Database & Systems Engineering, Higher Education, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 22, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

We've been using DPA for a couple of years now for our production Oracle instances. It's been incredibly valuable. Within a couple of weeks of installation, we were able to identify and correct an issue with some reporting that had been plaguing us for months. Even though we have and use Grid Control on a daily basis, without that additional wait info that DPA brought to the table we could not nail down the source of the problem. We now use it for our production MS Sql Server and MySQL instances and our DBAs are in it all day making sure everything is running well and identifying and quickly addressing issues that we see. Fantastic tool.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

After 2 years, I can't say I've found anything that I wish it did that it doesn't already do. Great tool, and the price is outstanding compared to competing products.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

All the things that happen on a daily basis in any production RDBMS environment. Performance tuning, changing (in some cases dropping) or adding indexes. Identifying poorly performing queries and giving hard data on where the problems lie to our developers so they can correct it. We literally use it all day every day. If you have Orion, the integration with other Orion tools makes end to end analysis and troubleshooting even easier.

  ### 2. Productivity gains from quick troubleshooting.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kyaw T. | Supervisor, *IX & DBA Teams, Government Administration, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 21, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

We purchased Confio Ignite (now DPA) as it was called back, hoping to alleviate the time taken when performance issues occurred. Due to budget constraints, we have only one SQL Server DBA which was borderline OK as far as workloads go. However, we would fall behind whenever performance issues popped up or when troubleshooting needed to take place. DPA has worked wonders for our DBA and enables him to rapidly pinpoint where the performance issue is with a SQL Server database. We have also started to use DPA to provide alerts when things are not 100% OK in our SQL Server environment.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

The graphs showing top SQL statements and top waits, etc. are difficult to interpret because the colors used in the bar graphs are shades of the same color. It is often difficult to distinguish between the shades to determine which queries are the top offenders when the shades of red or green or blue are so close together. Note that this is not the case when you log in to look at details. However, the high level charts in emails are difficult to make out. I feel I should not have to log in to be able to make out the details - I am busy enough as it is.

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

There are a lot of features in DPA that make it worthwhile in itself. Try the free trail to get a feel for it. Additionally, SolarWinds has built an ecosystem around it. We run SQL Server on VMware and having the ability to monitor the VM on which SQL Server is running is very useful for a DBA (the VMware module adds VM stats to DPA - it is a separately purchasable module and not part of DPA). It lets the DBA independently monitor and verify the performance and state of the VM w/o having to bother the system administrator. This lets the DBA determine whether or not the host VM is having resource issues, etc.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

1. I get quick resolution to performance issues that used to take a lot longer to troubleshoot.
2. I get alerts in advance of something bad about to happen. We do not have to wait for application users to alert us to issues.
3. We have started to use DPA for our Oracle standard edition as it works so well with SQL Server. Although we have Oracle Enterprise Manager for our Oracle Enterprise databases, this does not cover monitoring Oracle Standard Edition databases.

  ### 3. Got a problem with your database performance, and the DBA blames the network, install DPA!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jennifer A. | Senior Network Administrator, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 01, 2018

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

The ability to drill down on queries and to download reports with graphs for management.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

It is still difficult to explain to management that it is NOT the network. The graphs have helped substantially; I wish that there were a "view for dummies" !!

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

This product really helps you find out what is going on inside the database, it is very granular and has assisted our operation tremendously in cutting down wait times.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have proved that it is NOT the network. We now have regular quarterly database maintenance windows!

  ### 4. Network Tools Engineer

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sima G. | Network Tools Engineer, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 21, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

DPA is intuitive. Fresh interface and very easy to. I like that DPA gives me more root causes of database performance issues .

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Yet, I don't have something to dislike .

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

DPA is very good if you want a centralized solution.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I can manage all my databases from one place.

  ### 5. One of the best performance analyzers on the market

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Varaprasad I. | Engineering Specialist Advisor | Associate Director Software Development, Health, Wellness and Fitness, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 28, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

The stunningly easy way to see a visual with the expensive queries bringing down system's performance. Works really well with both Oracle and SQLServer. DBAs life has become so easy due to this software

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Price is on the higher end, but definitely realizes the ROI in the mid-long term. This software becomes a little redundant once everyone moves to a c full cloud storage solution. Trial period for 14 days was too little to evaluate but was able to extend thru the account manager

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

Evaluate your long term ROI versus short term since you may not get full ROI within 1-2 years. You will however see the results immediately

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Definitely shorter turn around time to resolve issues as this software pin points the bottle necks right away.
There's an alerting mechanism that sets our DBA team to be more proactive

  ### 6. Easy tools and efficient

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Cláudia J. | Projetos , Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 27, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Interface friendly, easy customizations, emission reports, creations alerts, instalations and show where have problem in data base, do what it says. Easy for add and remove data base, i think is better do work in option of remove the daba base only monitoring, but not lost your informations, and if after the user beed see her can do.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Months ago I have a problem in migrations server, when I try a new integrations with NPM. After more troubelshotter and grant help solarwinds team, all was it ok. Maybe to work in to simplify this process is better.

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

Ah add another tada base for monitoring. EX: Postgre, and Dababase not SQL .

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Whem a daba base server os sistem are slow we can see before of the final user, for us this is a great reasons for user DPA.

  ### 7. DPA to trust your database

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rasik R. | Consultant, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 28, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

When a SQL Server database instance includes Availability Groups (AGs), the DPA homepage provides the following information:

The AG status icon AG_status_icons.png identifies database instances that include AGs. An AG status summary box shows the number of database instances with partially healthy or unhealthy AGs. As with other status summary boxes, click the filter next to a status to display only those instances.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Alerting needs to be more promising
Custom Report for Resources for a Program in DPA
Automatic exporting for DPA logs should be added into newer versions

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

Great tool!!!
Ease of access
Ease of use
Easy to deploy
Very light weight
Data integrity is maintained

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Its ease of use makes itself more prompt than the other tools.
The application is mostly used for the AWS environments.
Oracle 10gR2 (10.2.0.5) is not supported with DPA 10.2.579

  ### 8. Excellent insight into what your Databases are really doing

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Richard P. | Senior Network Engineer, Information Technology and Services, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 26, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

The simple, yet very powerful interface makes DPA (Database Performance Analyzer) a product that is easy to implement and use. The power of the product gives insight that would otherwise only be available through hours of trial and error testing and processing. SQl can be complex to diagnose, but with DPA that time and effort is greatly reduced.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

While the product is very complete it can't make users actually pay attention. Our DBAs have access, but don't rely on the product as much as they should. But then this is a shortcoming of pretty much anything.

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

Download the free trial and you'll find it easy to install configure and use.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We had some slow performing SQL databases and DPA helped us identify underlying issues that couldn't be solved just be adding more CPU or memory

  ### 9. Solarwinds DPA

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Chad B. | VTC/AV Server Administrator, Telecommunications, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 21, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

I love the integration with the existing Orion platform, as we also use Network Performance Monitor and Network Configuration Management. Agentless architecture. Gives direct insight on database performance, showing top queries, wait times, identifying database problems in real time. We currently only use SQL Server, but as our company grows, it's nice to know that there's cross-vendor support all from this one interface, in case we acquire an office that uses Oracle or MySQL.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

I'd like to see more input on solutions to the detected problems.

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

Database Performance Analyzer is an absolute must for all DBAs, especially in the small to medium business world since we're often multitasking different roles beyond database administration.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Getting our SQL servers to run more efficiently. As a relatively inexperienced DBA, DPA has helped me more easily identify sources of problematic performance.

  ### 10. Sometimes the SQL is better than the original

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Luke D. | Software Engineer, Information Technology and Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 22, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

I really liked the capability of monitoring the SQL performance of different queries

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

If I had to pick a least favorite piece of the whole process, it would be installing the application in the first place, because no one ever likes that, even though the documentation was very well done.

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

Definitely download the trial and try running some of your more processor intensive queries and actions. See what the software can really do and see what it is the best at.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I was optimizing queries so that I could have the least amount of server impact

  ### 11. DPA for non-DBAs

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mark M. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 28, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Integrates well for a robust application monitoring and troubleshooting experience. When using APM and node groups we are able to utilize AppStack views, reports, and dashboards to provide end-users, admins, and execs the right view and information levels.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

The interface is not as good as other Solarwinds modules. There is a learning curve even for regular Solarwinds users. The cost and licensing can become a concern.

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

The power of this product is in its ability to scale and implement with other Solarwinds products. I highly recommend having all of your infrastructure be involved in the planning and implementation phases to get the most out of this product.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Critical application monitoring and database connection statistics for real time alerting and troubleshooting.
Reporting for historical root cause analysis

  ### 12. Database administration and performance troubleshooter

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 25, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Quick visual of performance bottlenecks and the drill down within every screen is a great feature in trying to get to the bottom of fixing an error troubleshooting query performance.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

If we can get more tips on database related messages as it seems the recommendations are sometimes very general in nature

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

DPA is easy to install and very lightweight so no worries on the analyzed database or instance taking a performance hit.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

DPA has helped me get to the bottom of a long standing performance issue with a client ERP on SQL server and we have now stabilized the performance. DPA showed me where and which time the major bottlenecks where coming from. Now we can move to tuning the queries with DPA.

  ### 13. DPA a good solution to monitor performance of your Databases.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sagar B. | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 08, 2018

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

SQL query tuning advice.
Identifies database problems in realtime .
DPA can monitor database instances that you manage running on physical or virtual servers. It can also monitor Amazon RDS instances hosted in the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2).

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Overall a very good but as all products have some flaws, it too has one which is sometimes experiences slowness.

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

My recommendation to others considering DPA is that they should install a 15 days evaluation version of DPA, to checkout if this product meets their requirements.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Identifies Blocking sessions and deadlock for a query.
Generates an alert for a query taking longer to execute.
Gives an advice for better query execution.
Minimum system requirements.

  ### 14. Easy install opens deep doors into your db performance

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Staffing and Recruiting | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 08, 2018

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

DPA is very easy to install and takes little time. The demo was up and running within an hour after spinning up the host VM. This gave our DBA team a change to try it out before we made a purchase. Other tools are a full project to get running and leave agents and tracks all over the environment. DPA does not, if you uninstall there is nothing left behind excect the account used to monitor the databases. These accounts can be quickly deleted and there is no trace of DPA left behind. This is important for beta testing. We were able to test in our Prod env and got a real look at what we were buying. The ease of use makes everyone in the NOC a value adding DB performance monitoring guru. SW products are mostly very user friendly, DPA also fits this description. The data provided is top shelf from engineer, to dev, to IT executive. Built in reports give you great data from day 1 and a little customizing makes you look like a DB Performance Monitoring Master. Low cost solution that gives you a ton of value.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Nothing to note as of yet. Since DPA is a newer product from SW I am not sure how support will be if we ever do need to engage. I have to assume it will be similar to the other products in the suite..

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

Do the demo and see what you think. Install is very quick and simple so its an hour of your time and then turn the DBA team lose. The cost is much lower than most other tools on the market so ROI is not a factor. Install is easy to remove if you don't like the product after the beta and no agents or other tracks left after removal.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Viewing db. issues/health is a breeze now. As a lifetime IT Ops person we tend to learn that app slowness is always the network first, then firewall, then IIS/web server, and possibly the app but never the database. DPA rules out the guessing with a few clicks. Prove its the DB or not the DB instantly. Historical trending is spot on. ROI is outstanding as we have been empowered to better allocate IT funds where needed. DBA team has embraced the tool and made our deployment a huge success. In the end DPA has been a significant win for our IT teams as well as business partners. And its cheap (when compared to other similar products). Also great integration to the Solar Winds platform if you are already there. DPA has been the easiest monitoring tool deployment in my 20 plus year career.

  ### 15. DPA is a pretty great tool

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 21, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

The best thing I've used it for was looking for root blockers and monitoring deadlocks but just from the features that I looked at while in the trial period it can do so much more. It was easy to use and the setup didn't take much time. I know that a lot of time can be put in on it but that is something else I liked about DPA. If you are willing to spend the time and develop it, it could be a one stop shop

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

There wasn't much that I didn't like, there were times went the program seemed slow however that could have been due to the limitations on the database I was trying it on

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

It's a great tool for analyzing your database with. I would highly recommend it.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We were having issues with deadlocks happening during the middle of the day and DPA helped to quickly identify where they were coming from and who was causing it. (It was someone running 52 different reports in Orion for hardware monitors at the same time.) The benefits to me seem to be endless plus if given the opportunity within my current company I would like to see about getting it implemented

  ### 16. Interesting way to monitor your databases using Wait-Time Analytics.

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Airlines/Aviation | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 21, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

The wait-time analytics is great. The software easily points our where issues are with poorly written queries. Integration with the rest of the SolarWinds suite is also very helpful as we can place performance statistics from multiple modules onto the same graph. Adding storage metrics from the Storage Arrays with OS metrics, and DPA counters make mapping out potential issues easy.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Cost. The price per database is too high. We would like if SolarWinds offered an enterprise license. Also the trial period is too short at 14 days, it doesn't give enough time to fully vet the product. Aligning the trial with their other products at 30 days would be better.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use DPA to monitor our Enterprise Monitoring Database. This software easily shows which queries are generating the most amount of wait-time. We monitor the database that is doing the monitoring for the enterprise. When we perform upgrades we can tell right away if there are performance issues.

  ### 17. An Excellent Diagnostic Tool for Systems and DBA Collaborative Efforts

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 21, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

The wait-centric focus of DPA allows monitoring professionals to speak in meaningful terms to DBAs and other DB professionals, quickly leading to common ground and productive output. In addition, the deep integration of the product with Solarwinds' NPM platform allows for correlated views, reports, and data gathering from the front end to the app to DB in a seamless fashion.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Not much - the standalone DPA console is a trifle limited for granular reporting and alerting. Much of this limitation goes away when integrated with NPM, however.

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

If you're a Solarwinds shop - or even if you're not - this product is worth your time. If eliminating the 'invisible' problems of Oracle/SQL/etc. is important to your business, DPA will help you get there.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Our primary goal was to identify bottleneck causes in weekly, month-end, and year-end processes. Being able to isolate the specific queries causing bottlenecks - and communicating those things effectively to our apps/DB teams - has significantly improved our execution level and reduced firefighting dramatically. The establishment of baselines for these processes also helps us be more efficient in differentiating between normal and abnormal ops.

  ### 18. SolarWinds DPA - View From Limited Use

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Chris J. | Network Manager, Internet, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 22, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Very in depth product and makes it a lot easier to find problems and root cause. Love the Tuning advisor, comes in very handy when you're not a DBA admin, and enjoy the query analysis.

Not being from a DBA background there is a learning curve to this, but if you take the input from DPA it will point you in the right direction more quickly to resolve the issue or even prevent the problem all together.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Cost due to the licensing model, depending on your setup.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We're still getting our heads around the product, but there was instantly some questions came up around tuning the databases that we hadn't realized before.

  ### 19. DPA the discussion killer

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ralf S. | IT Solutions Architect, Investment Management, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 21, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

The view of the whole stack from the Database to the disk. This helps a lot to find bottlenecks. Also the Wait- and Blocking-Views are very helpful in finding problems.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

The report engine of the DPA should be like the Orion report engine. The AD user and group administration could be better.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We searching for slow running SQL-Queries and try to find solutions for that. We also use DPA if we face suddenly performance problems.

  ### 20. Production Database Administrator

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 21, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

performance dashboard that gives a health summary of all the monitored database instances. Alerts can be customized and be used to alert for critical events that are logged in the SQL Server Error log. The ability to replay SQL Server database activity.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Difficult to read the SQL Agent job failure and identify the actual job that failed.

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

DPA has it all. One tool that can monitor and alert all your SQL Server estate. You can also use it replay events that occur on your servers while you are sleep, it gives you all the events on your servers at at any point in time.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Being more proactive to SQL Server performance issues.

  ### 21. DataBase Performance Analyzer

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Insurance | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 28, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

We really like the integration with Database performance analyzer and Perfstack Analysis. Being able to bring the data side by side with some of the other solarwinds functions is what we have been missing.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

I wish we could just do a complete integration with the Orion portal. Right now it feels like separate products which they kind of are under the SolarWinds name. If it was completely integrated into the SolarWind website and we didn't have to login to two it would help with the flow for our user base.

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

Its expensive but a great addition to your monitor toolset!!

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It really provides our Database team with a central location for visibility into their application. As well as its very easy for non DBA's. We can provide access to our DevOps team and they can help correlate events with the Databases we have in dpa.

  ### 22. We use DPA to troubleshoot on a daily basis.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Hospital & Health Care | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 22, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

The addition of the waits and deadlocks has allowed us to work with our vendors in fixing and streamlining various queries. This in turn has led to faster turn around and the end user able to work more efficiently.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Until the latest release there has not been a facility for SQL Availability Groups. However we have just updated to the latest version and are evaluating this functionality.

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

Solarwinds allows free trials of their software. Just give it a try and make an evaluation.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have a few large databases and a lot of customization. We have been able to fix queries that were holding up other processes with the wait time analysis. Also we have extensively used the blockers/deadlocks information to further enhance and improve performance. We have been able to show senior leaders through the reporting the improvements that have been made, and increased end user satisfaction.

  ### 23. Excellent product to give you real information about your database

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** James S. | Sr. Systems Administrator, Hospital & Health Care, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 29, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

The level of granularity that can be reached with the information captured by this tool. I'm also a huge fan of the explanations that are given with each of the individual items that are displayed.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Sometimes it can feel clunky in the relation that the node has to the database. I feel like looking at the node should flow more easily into DPA as opposed to being so separated.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

As a none DBA, I have been empowered to research and determine issues or recommendations to make to our database admins that carry significant weight and understanding of the tool and how it informs us of the database.

  ### 24. DPA changed our life!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 22, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

At many client sites, we were stuck, in a perpetual war between the DB, Network and Server teams, playing "Push the Blame" game since past so many years. After installation of DPA, we started knowing exactly, where our database performance was lagging, where the Applications were hogging the resources, where the VMs felt less provisioned. DPA was the best decision we ever took.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

We are fairly new on DPA, so we don't yet have explored much yet to find out any faults. However, it would be ever better if they expand the Vendors supported on DPA, a few of our SAP devices are not monitored in DPA.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

As specified above, it helped us solve the eternal war between our IT teams, helps us give the seniors solid proof when we ask for better provisioning of the resources. The reports obtained through DPA are an added bonus.

  ### 25. SolarWinds DPA is a must have

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jamison C. J. | Network Visibility Systems Engineer, Information Technology and Services, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 21, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Granular Details
The ability to mark points in time to track changes so you can see performance from that point in time.
The in app help and explanations.
Integrates into the Orion platform.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

AD authentication is not as easy to integrate as other SolarWinds products.

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

Well worth the investment, show this to your DBA's and I guarantee they will want it.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Helps to resolve problems faster by showing historical information.

  ### 26. Its a fast and efficient tool that reduces troubleshooting time

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Allistair G. | NOC Administrator, Telecommunications, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 21, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

It keeps everything in a single pane of glass. Allow intergration with other solarwinds tools like Network Performance Monitor that we use in our organizations. It quickly shows you a possible root cause analysis where you can further troubleshoot and issue and shows trends on potential issues.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Doesnt really allow me to analyse between a database and a web application that uses that database on a single pane of glass. I would have to move between windows to do an analysis.

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

Its a fast efficient and easy tool that can allow you to troubleshoot database performance and statistics.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It monitor core databases which affects customer experience.

  ### 27. Another tool in a great suite of tools!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Julie B. | Network Specialist, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 22, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

I appreciate how SolarWinds integrates all of their tools under one easy-to-use interface.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

I've only used the tool in trial mode as we're evaluating whether it is a fit for us. So far, it's a no brainer. No major hurdles to this point.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Mostly we are hoping to use it for digging into problems that we can't easily identify root cause of. As we are small staffed, we don't have a fulltime DBA on site. This tool helps us system admins dig deeper into issues without having quite the in-depth knowledge of SQL as it points us in the right direction.

  ### 28. Great for those who aren't DBAs

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 22, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Great data output, easy to understand charts that can be emailed. Our DBAs have really liked moving to the new product and we'd like to roll it out further. We host our own web applications. Being able to chart Database performance along application statistics is perfect.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Separate server required to our standard Orion install. It would be nice to see the next steps of integration between DPA and the Orion Suite. We need to keep the number of VMs to a minimum.

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

Get a trial and give it a try.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Linking application performance to database performance when troubleshooting.

  ### 29. Using Solarwinds Database Performance Analyzer we find the root cause of performance issues.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 23, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

It is very easy to see the queries running on the database and how long each takes. With this, we can determine if we need to make the query more efficient or what other action is best such as reindexing.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

I have been sitting here racking my brain trying to think of a feature I would like to be added or a database it should support but I cannot think of anything I dislike about it.

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

Do what we did. Download the trial version and see the tool for yourself.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have identified issues in indexing and queries in not only our in-house systems but in applications supplied by third parties. When on the phone with vendors they asked how we were able to find the issue and we told them about Solarwinds DPA.

  ### 30. DPA Helps Us Provide Managed Database Services

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Byron A. | Systems Engineer, Information Technology and Services, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 21, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

How easy it is to deploy and manage DPA. I also think that SolarWinds provides both fantastic support and has a great community behind their products with Thwack. I also love that it integrates with the Orion suite of products which we also use.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

It can be a complicated tool to use if you are not a DBA.

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

Definitely take advantage of the trial to compare this product against others.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are a service provider and DPA has helped us provide a better managed database service. We have also received very good client feedback regarding the product.

  ### 31. The product is very good for Database administrators as it helps to be proactive and monitors DBs.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ukz M. | SE, Retail, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 31, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

It is a very highly appreciated product. I recommend you go for it to help you properly analyze your databases. Especially for the proactive monitoring.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

  ### 32. DPA for everyone

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jeremy M. | Director of IT, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 21, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

the detail of monitoring and interoperability with Solarwinds Orion platform of products.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Currently it does not support SAP HANA which is a big need for us.

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

Get the demo, try it you will never leave it.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

MS SQL was the main reason for monitoring, and this gives me complete end to end insight in to the servers

  ### 33. This is going to completely change the way my developers attack problem code.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Outsourcing/Offshoring | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 28, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

I love that you get detail on specific queries. I can now have my developers focus on very detailed issues, and can pinpoint where issues are occurring.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

There's nothing that I dislike so far.

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

This is especially helpful for small teams. I have one DBA and 5 developers supporting 15k employees, so finding the time to do DB work is never easy. This narrows down the scope of finding problems tremendously.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We're going to start attacking poorly performing queries. This tool has shown us incredible amounts of data that we didn't have the bandwidth to dig for in the past. My team can focus on a few things and start knocking additional things off the list as we fix them.

  ### 34. DPA solarwinds module

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Utilities | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 21, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

The depth of the platform exceeds the current platform we are now using. With blocking, wait times, etc. detailed, the tool proves useful.I also like the prospect of integration with other solarwinds modules. PerfStack integration with DPA in demos appeared to be extremely useful.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

The price point is still proving to be too prohibitive for inclusion in our monitoring stack. I believe it was available at one time on AWS at a per GB use price point that showed promise for usage.

**Recommendations to others considering SolarWinds Database Observability:**

If you can get past the price point, all my DBA were stating that they would have loved to have this product over what we are currently using.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

With a trial demo, we proved that we could find troubling issues in our SQL stack.

  ### 35. Best product for Database and SQL query performance monitoring

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nikki B. | Banner Administrator / Applications DBA, Higher Education, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 22, 2017

**What do you like best about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Like many educational institutions, our budget does not allow for the purchase of Oracle's Diagnostics and Tuning packages. SolarWinds' DPA gives customers the insight into their environment that Oracle *should* provide, but doesn't.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

I haven't really found anything I much dislike yet!

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

In the past, we didn't really have the ability to be proactive and solve problems before they became huge. With DPA, we can keep an eye on performance and typically know when something is wrong and can fix it before our users even notice anything!

The analytics from one-pane of glass. While that is often overstated in our industry, the DB menu and customization interfaces have truly been invaluable.

**What do you dislike about SolarWinds Database Observability?**

Initial Setup is always the hardest part with any deployment. But with the kind folks at SW Support we managed to get it up and running without issue.

SW Product lines always have something of value and always remember you don't know what you don't know. Having the right tool in place helps prevent any "gotcha" moments.

**What problems is SolarWinds Database Observability solving and how is that benefiting you?**

SQL resource consumption and process improvement.
