From a participant's perspective, the structure of course content, broken down by modules and topic pages, is the best part, alongside the flexibility of the types of course content available. I also appreciate the seamless management and administration of courses, which is a big help given our small team. The development of several automated tools using the Brightspace API makes tasks like generating course pages, managing user enrollment, and fetching metrics from Datahub data sets much simpler. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** One area that could be improved for us is the Course Merchant system. We recently introduced the storefront to allow for participants to enroll in our courses on-demand. This has mostly worked well for us, but as we look ahead to offering more courses via the storefront and receiving new requirements for who can enroll, there are some pain points that Course Merchant cannot handle, and so we've had to resort back to a manual enrollment process for these courses. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** D2L Brightspace helps seamlessly manage and administer courses. The API makes it easier to create and maintain courses, and provides flexibility with content structures. ### 3. Not all of the departments need the same features in an online experience, but D2L does a really good job making sure that their features can cross those "boundaries" and be applicable across with the different functionalities available for group work, discussions, within quizzes, etc. I also appreciate that there is a certain level of "customization" available with the more recent update to the New Content Experience. That has made it much more streamlined and user friendly for our Students (even if faculty aren't quite as keen about the change - but that is just because the buttons moved around in some places). We also utilize a lot of the various partner integrations, so I appreciate that D2L makes it so easy to set those up. We rarely have any performance issues that are based on the D2L side of things for those - more often than not any of the problems with integrations are rooted in the third party provider. And, when those issues do come up, I really like how quickly and thoroughly D2L support looks into the problem. With other software companies I have felt like I wasn't being taken seriously, but I have never felt that way with D2L support. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** I dislike that there are so many great new features that are coming out that aren't available to the core license. I also dislike that there are so many features on request in the PIE area that would be beneficial to SO many people but they aren't on the road map because of the heavy focus on AI. Now, I will say that I understand those tendencies. Revenue has to come from somewhere, and they can't just give high level features to everyone, adn, right now, AI is the hot spot for the tech world. I appreciate the answer in today's webinar that the team is at least investigating more on how some of those AI features may be able to be rolled out for the core package. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** D2L Brightspace makes it so that one person can support a vast number of faculty, staff, and student roles in our organization. The clear updates from D2L each month, the recent updates to the community and the role out of the D2L Academy help to make that even more feasible by providing administrators with the resources that they can share to help faculty, staff, and students understand and navigate the system without having to invest and "reinvent" all of those trainings within our own environment. ### 4. From the programmatic perspective, this is incredibly useful to identity patterns in student learning, which can help inform course iterations. When set up strategically, a learning design team can find areas in the content students are struggling with. That information can, in turn, lead to the creation/revision of additional exercises to help future students avoid that struggle. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** Some of the least helpful aspects of Brightspace is the way its tools communicate with each other. For some workflows, it feels like the Assignments and Grades tools live on different planets. In order to make the two tools talk efficiently to each other, a person really needs to be SUPER familiar with them. Using D2L, we like that we can provide Special Access and alternate due dates. If pilot is grounded in a different city, our team can easily modify their training windows without disrupting the entire fleet's schedule. Automated, action-based release of materials, it is the thing I value the most. This allows us to create a linear path for certifications, this means no one is operating without prerequisite training, a crew member can not see the advanced cabin safety module until they have passed the basic safety assesment. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** From the recent event, I can remember the error which with I contacted the support team. When I imported a new fleet training cycle, the system caused to overwrite my carefully planned dates with the import date/time. Until I received any instructions from support team, I had to manually fix the start and end dates for many different modules just because the software decided to reset them. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** One of my primary responsibilities is to ensure that hundreds of crew members are qualified, safety-certified, and ready for their next rotation. Managing a training workforce that is literally moving across time zones 24/7 is a logistically complex challenge, and we’re able to handle it using D2L. As stated in protocols, I can not schedule a crew member if they havent completed the specific technical differences training. I can't manually check who has finished their training. So, I use class progress tool, which help me track logins and system access at a glance. Also, we employ crew members from across the globe. Safety procedures must be understood with one hundred accuracy, brightspace's auto generation of closed captions in multiple languages help us reduce the risk of a misunderstandings. ### 8. One of this chalenfes was the content migration from our legacy custom CMS, migrating the content from Flash to HTML5 objects, and D2L was able to support and remediate any issue on the fly. Also, the hability to scale. In Pandemic, we had the challenge to migrate hundreds of thousand users from offline to online and we did it in a couple weeks. Also, we rolled out some new courses from scratch in 2 weeks, from idea to deliver! **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** We faced some issues with integrations with third party systems during the years, the learning curve is too steep in some points, only using the documentation, we had to raise some tickets for some doubts. Some design decisions affected duplication of content due the logic used, that wasn't the best one. Perhaps some success case templates to guide during course creations might help. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** The scale we have in our business has ruined some other solutions, but D2L was able to handle the load without any issues, the users accessed and consumed the content without any problem, and very fast. the hability to make fast changes also, it helped a lot on many situations. ### 21. We have been able to apply the default templates provided to generate aesthetically pleasing course content, and the improved SCORM process allows us to create and upload Articulate products seamlessly within our courses. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** Brightspace is still struggling with its documentation and training materials. Most questions I have are resolved through a Google search and not through content on their Community site. They recently gave the site a facelift, but the content is still tough to find, located in too many areas, and organized in an illogical manner. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** D2L acts as our LMS and allows students to navigate through our course content relatively clearly and logically. The team of D2L staff we work with seek to help improve the experience our team has within the system. There is an active product idea exchange that helps to get customer voices heard. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** The documentation is light or out of date on quite a few systems. This can cause an issue when trying to figure out how something works. A up-to-date standard operating proceduces manaual would be beneficial not just to the clients but also internally. We often do a lot of testing and investigating on our own. The are inconsistencies between how different functions work. What should work sometimes doesn't. While this is helpful for a tech-savvy person, it can be confusing for those that are not as familiar with technology. Additionaly, there are many features and functions that exist in multiple tools and some are not fully fleshed out. As an example, the learning outcomes tool and portfolio tools are available and have been available for quite awhile but they are not fully implemented. This means there are multiple tools that do the same thing instead of just one rock-solid tool that does it all. The D2L accompaniment is very close. While the LMS is adequate for most of the teachers' content. Currently there is a wide variety of LMS, however Brightspace stands out for its intuitive interface for both teachers and students. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** Compared to other LMS, Brightspace falls short in some respects, especially code manipulation, as it is a closed source platform. However, it meets most needs. Although the resources and activities are complete, the forum section (exchange activities between students) does not have all the options available in other LMS. **Recommendations to others considering D2L Brightspace:** I recommend having a complete trial period of the platform first to know if it meets and correctly meets all expectations; each LMS aims to meet different needs of institutions. The process of implementing a new LMS is not easy in general. At once, implemented all users must learn to use it, and then the students. That is why the target audience (teachers and students, for example) must try the product. **What problems is D2L Brightspace solving and how is that benefiting you?** D2L Brightspace offers an out-of-the-box solution for delivering synchronous and asynchronous content for distance education. There are tools for just about everything you need such as quizzes, discussion boards, dropboxes. I like that you can connect everything and have it linked out from the content area. There is also great communication from D2L support. As administrators in higher ed, we have frequent meetings with various D2L groups that result in open communication. We get weekly emails that go over upcoming releases and important notices. It helps keep us on track when we have to deliver the content to instructors. **What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?** The gradebook functions completely separately from the D2L tools. You must create items in each area and then go back to connect them. Also some of the other tools such as survey and chat haven't been updated in a while. I wish there was a better way to request updates rather than upvoting PIE items. **Recommendations to others considering D2L Brightspace:** I think D2L is a solid choice when considering LMS choices. It is easy to use and there are many functions to achieve the course that you want. Most instructors are able to transition from other LMS without much trouble. D2L has many helpful resources on its website and the staff is always willing to help.
