**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 08, 2017

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

I love the topics, the platform works great. The courses are high quality. The diversity of topics is huge.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

The prices of certification has gone really high. It switched from a free platform to a one that doesn’t let you take a course if you do not pay for it.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

It has good content and it has gained credibility through years.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Sometimes I used the information from some of the videos to develop concepts in my work.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> Thank you for sharing your experience. We're pleased to hear that you find the content valuable and have been able to apply it to your work. We understand your feedback about the pricing changes and will continue to strive for a balance between value and accessibility.

  ### 6. Coursera helped me redesign my goals

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Messias U. | Founder, Management Consulting, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 24, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

High quality courses, diversity of choices, from business to programming, from mathematics to philosophy. The courses are very well designed and the platform is of excellent quality. I appreciate the availability of university lecturers to serve as instructors of the courses. This gives more respect and recognition for the courses. The courses have the advantage of not being very strict on the timelines. They correctly assume that people who do these courses are busy, sometimes cannot commit to timelines that are normal in an on-campus education.
Coursera offers courses that explain difficult concepts in an intuitive way so that the students understands and applies what they learn. It's why learning leads to practice. This is my first experience of having excellent instructors and excellent content delivery. This has changed my professional goals, from teaching to business.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

Some courses seem to be easier. There other courses that should be updated. Another problem, i think that instead of translating the courses, Coursera should invite universities of different speaking countries to deliver their courses in other languages other than English.
Since these courses are serious, students who complete successfully should be gratified with a recognition and recommended to post-graduate courses by their instructors. Conditions would apply, but this should be a possibility to be considered.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

Coursera is an educational website that trains professional through an immersive online experience of teaching for practice. this approach leads people to tackle their problems in a new fashion and test the validity of their learning by practice.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I started using Coursera in 2015. Since then, I'm planning to create a company. What hinders me now are financial resources, but this problem will be overcome soon.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> Thank you for sharing your positive experience with Coursera for Business. We're glad to hear that our high-quality courses and expert instructors have helped you redesign your professional goals.

  ### 7. Coursea is the best online learning platform yet

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Oil & Energy | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 15, 2017

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

I like that there is a large selection of courses available to chose from, and the resources are quite detailed. If I need assistance with anything I can reach out to the help desk and they are happy to assist

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

Coursera doesn't offer courses in Robotics Process Automation (RPA). I needed this for my work however they did not offer it and thus I had to go to another company. Their selection in mega/emerging trend topics is some-what limited.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Coursera has lots to offer on Big Data analytics. We are solving the challenge of switching over to big data platform from our old silo'ed and static databases. Coursera has plenty of useful information in that respect.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We're glad to hear that you are enjoying the large selection of courses and detailed resources on Coursera for Business. Our help desk is always here to assist you whenever you need help.

  ### 8. Useful for Self-Motivated Learners

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 23, 2017

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

I appreciated the inclusion of courses from well-respected universities and professors, which made me feel like i was getting more value than if it would have been from places I had never heard of, or even just by Coursera staff.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

I am not a huge fan of forums as the main form of communication between classmates. It did not create a sense of group-learning for me; it just felt like another task to check off the list. I would rather either be a completely independent learner or be engaged in meaningful learning with others beyond a requirement to post/respond a certain number of times.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

I think this could be an okay option for employers looking to offer education opportunities for their employees, but I think that it would need some kind of oversight or reinforcement. Perhaps companies could sign people up for certain classes in cohorts, so they can add an element of in-person engagement.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Coursera definitely solves a problem for self-motivated learners who are looking for an inexpensive option to engage in ongoing education or pick up specific skills. I learned I am not in that category. While using Coursera, I would watch the videos but not follow through on assignments, because I was more interested in the general knowledge for myself - as if I was reading a book. For truly engaged learning, I've found on-campus, classroom experiences to be best for me.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We're glad to hear that you found value in the courses offered by well-respected universities and professors on Coursera for Business. We understand your feedback about the forums and will take it into consideration for future improvements.

I love the various options (both free and paid) available to all users with Internet access. It's very easy to use!

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

I think it needs better mobile integration, and I would love to see some more course offerings!

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

I really feel that for a complex variety of subjects, this is the place to go! I find that it has more course offerings than its counterparts such as EdX.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

This site covers all subjects such as Computer Science and Languages, and I feel that it is a great learning tool for those that are not looking to go back to school.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We appreciate your positive review and are thrilled to hear that you find Coursera for Business to be a great learning tool. We are constantly working to expand our course offerings and improve mobile integration to better serve our users.

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

Downloadable videos and presentations for each course.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

Sometimes prices for valid certifications are expensive.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

Now they changed their inner policies to force you to stay on course, while you're enlisted. It can be tough but it's a way to finish on time.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Learning and improving my skills on my profession.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are continuously working to improve our policies and pricing to better serve our users. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make these changes.

  ### 11. Bringing good school education to you!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Education Management | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 17, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

- allows you to take the best available courses at some of the best schools in the country/world
- great place to learn if you are serious about learning yourself.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

- actually nothing! Except just one recommendation: for paid courses, if Coursera could allow an introduction video/demo teaching of the course professors, it'd be a great evaluation method before taking on the study.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

Great place to learn!

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Learning new tools and higher studies in my field. I haven't gotten very serious about the courses, but i think if i am able to show a little more dedication, i know coursera is a great place to learn.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> It's great to hear that Coursera for Business is helping you with learning new tools and higher studies in your field. We appreciate your feedback and dedication to learning!

  ### 12. A truly remarkable tool for today's fast paced learning requirements in the workplace

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** John R. | Software Engineer, Computer Software, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 20, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

I was always an avid student during my undergrad, but during my graduate studies for the first time I had the chance to watch videos of the lectures and watch them at whichever time I preferred. For me this was a game changer. Soon after that I started using Coursera, which had most of the benefits without the hefty price tag.

With Coursera I was able to speed up videos that would otherwise make for a tedious lecture and kept myself focused while burning through the all the videos. In my honest opinion this has greatly helped me acquire new skills without the need for taking any more classes.

Another advantage is that a lot of the courses have programming projects, which I find very important for the student, since they help consolidate all the acquired knowledge.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

At times you might not be able to see the material for an old course, mostly in the case when you accidentally re-register for it. This is inconvenient since I keep a relatively optimized schedule for doing my reviews and not being able to access old quizzes or materials can be a hindrance for the preservation of what was learned before.

Additionally, the iOS client does not offer the ability to change the speed of videos (or it didn't back when I last used it). I typically work around this by downloading the videos and using VLC in any of my devices/tablets.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

Just give it a try. Most of the material is free if you audit the course. In my particular case, I don't see a benefit to paying for the courses just yet, but I might spring for it to get access to the "final projects" available for some specializations.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

As a Software Engineer it's hard to keep up with many of the latest trends while also making sure you are getting the optimal "syllabus" for a topic of interest. In the past I used to peruse through the syllabus of classes given at different universities and just bought the books and learned the subject myself, sadly this does not scale very well when learning multiple subjects.

With Coursera, I can watch educational videos on my tablet while at the gym, listen to a lecture while taking a walk, take the class at my desk or the couch, or pretty much anywhere whenever I can spare some time.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We're thrilled to hear that Coursera has been a game changer for your learning experience, especially with the flexibility it offers for watching lectures at your preferred time and speed. We appreciate your feedback and are glad to hear that the programming projects have been beneficial for consolidating your knowledge.

  ### 13. Machine learning well explained

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Vishwas R. | Software Developer Engineer 1, Publishing, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 18, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

The coursera is made for students who wants to study the last night before exams. You enroll to whichever course you want at whichever time you are comfortable with. A total independence for usual classroom 8-5 studying. I had taken machine learning couses from coursera, For each ML topic, there was sufficient amount of notes, videos and pictures to study from. The best part about studying through videos is that, we could skip the part of videos we know and could run it in 1.5X, 2X, etc.., speed.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

The part I dislike about coursera was that for some courses you are asked to pay. well I was interested in building ios application, but this costed me $55 dollars, that is expensive.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

Yea.. I would recommend cousera to students. if you want to learn machine learning, best site to be in.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Coursera offers ATS(Any time studying) oppurtunties for everyone. Any layman can come to site and access any course and study when ever possible.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We're glad to hear that you found the machine learning courses on Coursera helpful and convenient for your study needs. We appreciate your recommendation and hope you continue to find value in our platform.

  ### 14. Great courses

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Internet | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 24, 2017

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

Availability of excellent, free courses.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

Most videos are a little longer than actually needed.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

Be disciplined!

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Learning Scala.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> Thank you for your feedback! We understand that video length can be a concern and we are continuously working to improve the user experience. We hope you continue to find value in the courses offered on Coursera for Business.

  ### 15. Great courses to get you started but does not offer the depth

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Debajit G. | Stats / Analytics & Strategic Consultant - Stores Supply Chain, Retail, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 08, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

The breadth of topics that are covered.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

Some topics lack the depth they need to be at. Also, there is a lot of inconsistency in the quality of lectures - some instructors do a good job navigating the level of details needed, given that not all students would have the same background whereas you would need prior knowledge with the subject to get through the course work and assignment.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

Review the course curriculum prior to enrolling - read the reviews. If you want more depth on any course topic, be sure to supplement the lectures with additional reading. It is important to keep in mind that most of these courses will just give you a basic level of familiarity with a topic or tool - the onus is on you to build on that. The courses is not an alternative to a regular degree program.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Since I have taken courses with which I have prior academic and professional background, I did not solve any new problems. What Coursera helped me with was getting me started on newer tools (e.g. open source technologies) that opened up possibilities for me to experiment with solving the problem in different ways.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Supplementing the lectures with additional reading can also help in gaining more in-depth knowledge. We appreciate your feedback.

  ### 16. Coursera is a fun way to learn with your family!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Matthew K. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 16, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

My wife and I took two classes on Coursera together: Fundamentals of Music Theory and Python for Informatics. We learned a lot in both classes. I am no longer totally lost if some talks about keys and tonics and she's integrated coding into her Kindergarten classes via the Hour of Code.

I liked how easy it was to watch the lectures together. We could also compete to see who got the best grades on the quizzes and suchlike. The interface was fairly intuitive, especially if you've taken other online courses before or edited/used Wikipedia.

All in all, it was a very positive, if challenging, experience and one that I would recommend to anyone looking to further their knowledge. (Also there are paid tracks if you want certification.)

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

The only thing I dislike about Coursera was that the HTML5 videos had an issue where if you paused them, they would stop working. However, there was the option to watch them in Flash format, so this was just a passing annoyance. This was also a few months ago. It may be fixed already.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

You need to be self-motivated to do well in the classes. If you don't do the work on time, you will not succeed.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I took these courses for personal edification and for knowledge in future jobs. I know more about programming and music theory than I did before starting the classes (which was my aim).

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We're thrilled to hear that you and your wife had a positive experience learning together on Coursera! It's great to know that the interface was intuitive and that you found the classes challenging and rewarding. Thank you for your feedback about the HTML5 videos, and we're glad to hear that the issue may have been resolved. We appreciate your recommendation and are glad to have been a part of your learning journey.

  ### 17. A Growing Number of Interesting Course Options with Significant Variations in Quality

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Steve H. | System Integration and Test Engineer, Defense & Space, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 14, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

Coursera provides free access to top professors from many well-known universities. I've found several courses with engaging professors who are excited about their topic and use the online/video format to their advantage by using animations and links to content that work better than in a classroom setting.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

I've found some of the courses to be almost comically easy. There are "quizzes" after lectures, but often they don't reinforce knowledge and instead only ask for dictionary-level definitions of the most basic concepts from the video. It almost seemed like Coursera wanted to push more people through to passing their courses instead of creating challenging quizzes that people may actually do poorly on.

There is also a challenge in identifying which classes will be good and which ones will be a waste of time. Coursera sends frequent emails of "We think you'd be interested in this," but their options often seem scattered instead of targeted. And even though many courses have been taught before, there is no clear ranking or review system for identifying what courses previous users liked and disliked. It seems Coursera is going for "more classes is better" rather than "higher quality classes is better" which I dislike as a paradigm.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

Find a class that you're genuinely interested in rather than a "meh" topic so that you're more engaged throughout. I've effectively dropped 3 courses because the topic or the professors don't work for me.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Each class has given me some insight into a different topic.
The Human-Computer Interaction class helped me evaluate the usefulness of a graphical interface. This has helped me in my career as I develop LabVIEW programs. It also makes me a more educated user because I can specifically point out what I like and dislike when using an app or program, and I often pass back that feedback to developers.
The Project Management classes showed good techniques for managing your time and responsibilities, and gave resources for creating your own project management tools. While these could probably be found online, the teaching video format is more engaging and I have been able to stick to the techniques months after the online class.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We're pleased to hear that you've found engaging professors and gained valuable insights from the courses.

  ### 18. Empowering and Disruptive Social Technology

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rei S. | Director of Strategic, Operational and Model Risk Management, Banking, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 11, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

College-level education at no or low cost

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

I don't know how they create so much value

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

If you need to train yourself or your employees in the specific areas covered by the service, Coursera must be one of your first stops. The student receives university-level video instruction from professors at top-notch institutions of higher learning.

What makes Coursera different and much more effective than any other self-study course I've encountered is that homework assignments and term projects are assigned with specific deadlines, and your work is peer-evaluated and graded. Each student in essence takes part of the responsibility of evaluating and grading other students. It is a very effective system.

Overall, the courses are easily the equal of university courses in presentation, materials, challenge and work. These courses will require a time and effort commitment from the student, so please do take it seriously.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Applying the theory, practice and technology of data science to financial credit applications.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We're glad to hear that you are enjoying the college-level education at no or low cost that Coursera for Business offers. Thank you for sharing your positive feedback!

  ### 19. Backbone of my self-education efforts - need I say more?

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Fernando M. | Senior Sales/Systems Engineer, Computer & Network Security, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 10, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

Coursera offers what I think to be an excellent combination of broad content coverage, just enough depth in each course, with a reasonable schedule. They haven't pioneered MOOCs, but they certainly made the biggest impact for undergraduate-level content.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

It's frustrating that some courses are not offered on-demand (or more frequently) but that's a small price to pay.
Also, they seem to have just rolled out a new front-end that is 'prettier' but less functional than the older version. In the past, it was easy to just have all videos & lecture slides in one single page. Now, it is spread all over the place.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

It really is up to you as a learner to decide how much you'll get out of it. Choose wisely.
It is easy to go overboard and sign up for many courses, only to be crushed by deadlines. I have taken the firm stance of not taking more than 2 courses at a time, preferably just one.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am an IT professional with a strong dedication to self-learning. Since starting courses on Coursera back in the September 2012 timeframe, I've completed many courses in Statistics, Data Science (I'm *almost* done with the paid Data Science specialization offered by a team Johns Hopkins), Finance, and others.
The content I chose to follow from Coursera has helped me tremendously in my role as an information security pre-sales specialist: it has helped me understand and apply data-focused methods to projects, discussions, etc...

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> Thank you for sharing your positive experience with Coursera for Business. We're glad to hear that the content has been beneficial to your professional development.

  ### 20. Pivotal

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Anne S. | Data Scientist, Sr, Information Technology and Services, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 09, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

Coursera courses completely changed my career trajectory. Not only were they fun and engaging, they helped me fill in the gaps from my formal education to enable a career shift from physics to data science. I could not give a higher recommendation for this amazing resource.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

It would be helpful for the professors to post possible solutions to course projects after the due date so one can more easily assess her/his performance. Peer grading, although understandable and necessary in these types of classes, does not always help if no one knows the correct solution.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

Anyone looking to learn just about anything can find a exciting course on Coursera. The breadth of courses and quality is shocking for courses that can be taken for free.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Coursera enabled me to get a fantastic job and figure out solutions to whatever new tasks are thrown at me, even if I initially do not know how to approach the problem or how to use the tools.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We're thrilled to hear that Coursera has had such a positive impact on your career trajectory! Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

  ### 21. A productive concept, both academically and professionally

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Haince Denis P. | Data Engineer, Enterprise Infrastructure, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 09, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

The short course videos are very helpful and keep the person involved and interested in the course.
The practice exercises every week are helpful to review one's knowledge of the class lectures that for that specific week.
I have completed 7 courses successfully from Courses and have been a member for last 3 years. I have definitely gained a lot of knowledge through the courses and I believe that MOOC is the future of learning.
In fact, my independent coursework from Coursework helped me secure an admit to one of the highly reputed technology universities in United States, and also helped me secure a 6 figure job in an investment bank.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

Deadlines, I feel deadlines should be until the end of course for all exercises and its difficult for people who work and / or and a part of professional network who are interested in learning more in order to improve their skills while managing their full-time jobs and other responsibilities.
Also, If Coursera could provide any waiver to students who genuinely are interested in pursuing the specializations but have monetary issues; especially the ones from the third world countries; it would definitely help their cause and help empower them. Thus greatly helping the novel cause.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

I would definitely recommend people / beginners to enroll into the course of their interest and go forward from there.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am working on a research project to build data warehouse Ontologies over Big data.
I believe courses from Coursera will be extremely beneficial in helping me work on my project independently

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> It's fantastic to hear how Coursera for Business has positively impacted your academic and professional pursuits. We appreciate your feedback about the deadlines and financial assistance, and we will certainly consider these aspects for future improvements. Thank you for recommending Coursera for Business to others, and we wish you continued success with your research project!

  ### 22. A great resource if you know what you need.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sameer G. | Sr. Staff Asic Design Engineer, Semiconductors, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 08, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

The wide variety of courses on Coursera ensures that you are quite likely to find what you need. Most of the courses are of really high quality. Overall, the courses are a great way to build breadth in your area or in adjacent areas. I think it's hard to use these courses to replace a degree, but they are great for the cases where you would like to know more than you do now. I did a course on linear optimization which was quite outside my expertise area, and I also recently did a course on data structures and algorithms for electronic design automation. Both of these were excellent.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

I would not try to use this to replace a degree course, but it is very useful for the parts where it works well.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

There are lots of courses on the popular topics, so browse reviews and videos and pick the one that works best for you.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

This is a good way for employee development, but the benefits are hard to pin down. You are just making your employees more interesting and more useful.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We appreciate your recommendation to browse reviews and videos to find the best courses on Coursera for Business. Employee development is a key focus for us, and we're pleased to hear that our platform is contributing to making employees more interesting and useful in their roles.

  ### 23. Free education by quality institutions and highly qualified instructors

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Cale D. | Senior Interactive Developer, Marketing and Advertising, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 08, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

The courses are taught by industry veterans and institutional leaders, often times professors at well-respected universities. It isn't just some random person who knows something, telling you what they know, these are people that instruct classes at Stanford, Rice, Duke, University of California, and other accredited educational institutions. I also like that some courses offer verifiable certificates of completion and make it pretty easy to add them to your LinkedIn profile.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

The user interface is a little difficult to use. It has the feel of an old-school bulletin board system to me. The production quality of some of the instructor videos is poor as well. I've had cases where I can barely hear the instructor or simply can't understand them.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Coursera to expand my knowledge in various areas of Computer Science. I've already got an associates degree and a bachelors degree in a Computer Science related field, but it is nice being able to keep supplementing knowledge gained during those degree programs with free knowledge taught by instructors from respected universities.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> Thank you for your feedback on the quality of our instructors and the value of our certificates. We are actively working on enhancing our platform to provide a better learning environment for our users.

  ### 24. Provides a variety of specific skill-based training to a moderate level; somewhat heavy on sales

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jeremy L. | Consultant - Data Analyst/Developer, Restaurants, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 08, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

I've been using Coursera for more than 3 years. In that time I've watched it grow from a basic platform that provides classes between specific periods, including courseware, grading and assignments, to one that actively seeks to build community around the topics and courses, encourages learners to go at their own pace (by offering repeat sessions of courses and automatically advancing learners who have fallen behind to the next course offering), and exposes learners to a wide variety of institutions and topics.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

There is no way to rate a course within coursera. Some of them are very mature, very well-developed, and others need a substantial amount of work. At the very least it would be helpful to have an idea of the level of challenge - rated by other Coursera users. For example, there are five or six machine learning courses currently being offered. These differ from one another based on platform (Matlab, Python, R), approach (start with theory or application), and skill level. It's the skill level that's difficult to quantify - a professor in computer science who is accustomed to getting upper-level undergrads may label a course as beginner, while another from sociology who is accustomed to getting sophomores with no programming background may label a course as advanced, but these could really provide an identical experience.

The sales-side is fairly heavy. If you want to sign up for a course for free (Audit it), sometimes you have to dig to find that as an option.

Lastly, there are no links within the sequence pages to find individual courses. Truth be told, I'm not going to shell out $495 for a 6-course sequence until I've completed at least one course and have a taste for the teaching style, methods and subject areas. There are series I've begun in earnest only to find I didn't enjoy the approach, or found that it was a language I was interested in but the focus for application was not what I was looking for.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

Take your time to shop out courses and allow yourself to watch a few lectures before making a decision as to whether you'd want to delve in and take the course, for credit or for audit. There are multiple courses for some subject areas, and there are courses offered multiple times per year.

Also, give yourself the time to make an actual committment. I often see folks get frustrated when they commit an hour to a course that asks for 5 and probably took 9 or 10 because a video needed to be re-watched or an assignment didn't make sense the first time through. If you try to rush through it you're really just cheating yourself.

Before deciding whether to pay for a class, ask:
- Will this help my career?
- Is there sufficient content?
- Do i want to support this professor, school, course or platform?

The honest truth is, I don't know how much of a $79 course fee the prof actually sees. I hope it's a good chunk. I'd actually not mind going to a subscription-based method where I pay $200/year and get unlimited courses. I would pay that. I don't think I'd pay $100 per course.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The business problems I've sought answers for on Coursera have ranged from QA and program evaluation to process mapping to database interaction. I could not have had the start I did in my most recent job without the (now-discontinued) course on Database Systems taught by Jennifer Widom, nor would I be as far along as I am in learning R or Python. I also found UCSD's course on Big Data very helpful as we try to set up a localized hadoop cluster.

On a personal level I'm exploring where I belong in this Big Profitable Amorphous Thing Called Data Science. I think that's the technical name :-) The variety of offerings on Coursera for Data Science seem to drive a LOT of the site's traffic and participation.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We're glad to hear that Coursera has been beneficial for your professional and personal development. Your feedback on course ratings and pricing options is valuable, and we will work on addressing these concerns to enhance the user experience.

  ### 25. So much return for so little investment

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ben Ji K. | Manager, Standards and Quality - Wind, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 06, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

Accessibility from anywhere at any time

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

Lacking advanced courses as it is usually undergraduate level

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

If you are looking for continuous training, it is a very good platform to improve your knowledge in many different fields. The quality of the content will vary upon the universities and professors giving the courses. It has a PC and a mobile version, very useful if you want to use your connecting time to learn. Courses are free if your not chasing certificates, and not very expensive otherwise, compared to traditional professional trainings. However, a majority of the courses are entry or undergraduate level. You will be limited if looking for advanced knowledge in your field of expertise.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Coursera both for my current work and for personal interests in fields I am not directly working in, though still related to my background (engineering).
Coursera keeps me updated with mew methods and techniques, essentially in data processing. It also gives a good portrait of what the new trends are and broadens my engineering knowledge (e.g. in electronics, programming, embedded systems...).

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We're happy to hear that Coursera for Business has been a valuable resource for your continuous training and personal interests. Your feedback about the lack of advanced courses is important to us, and we will take it into consideration as we continue to improve our course offerings. Thank you for choosing Coursera for your learning journey.

  ### 26. Coursera is extremely valuable for learning new skills

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Leif K. | Principal Systems Engineer, Defense & Space, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 06, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

I have completed over 20 courses on Coursera and I am extremely happy overall with my experience with it. Coursera offers a huge spectrum of classes in many different disciplines from liberal arts, to engineering, to business there is something for everyone. There are always skills out there that people want to learn, but don't have a good way to do it. Coursera partners with teachers from well known Universities (ex. Johns Hopkins, Duke, Brown, etc.) to provide well structured courses including lecture videos, homework, quizzes, exams, due dates, grading, and forums to ask and answer questions about the course content. The combination of having a lot of quality content and good structure to the courses makes Coursera a great way to learn. Given all this, the best part about Coursera is that it is FREE. You don't have to pay a penny to use it. Of course they offer verified certificates indicating you personally took each course you say you did, which you have to pay a fee for (~$50). This could be good for a resume, but you can learn absolutely everything in all the courses for $0 if you choose to.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

I don't like that Coursera charges so much for verified certificates for courses. The $50 or so per course may not seem like a lot for a good quality class, but it is infinitely more than the $0 option with no certificate. I love Coursera so much I would consider giving back something like $10 per course, but $50 is just too much.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

Go for it, there is no cost to you and you can always drop a course if it isn't for you.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I've spent a lot of time trying to learn more about Biology and Big Data since that wasn't my in background from college. Aside from gaining a wealth of knowledge about biology, along the way I've picked up Python programming and data analysis skills that have directly helped me do my current job, which is in engineering.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We appreciate your feedback regarding the cost of verified certificates. We are constantly reviewing our pricing to ensure it remains fair and accessible to all learners.

  ### 27. Good Place for Knowledge and Skills

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Brian N. | Retirement Benefit Specialist V, Government Administration, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 05, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

The sheer variety of topics that one can consume, is breath taking. Yes I said consume, one can consume knowledge but in this case it is not a bad thing.
This access has allowed those who do not have time, money, or means to go to universities of the caliber found at Coursera. The community is very diverse from all over the world giving varying insight and knowledge that helps the learning process a great deal.
I am enjoying the new on demand courses and it seems these are growing. This is a good thing for those whose lives can get very busy. I also like the specializations certificates they have begun this can give a person a good start in a number of areas.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

The only thing so far I have issue with is the discussion fora can get noisy. So one must be very selective in taking part or you will be overwhelm with responses. Though I have not personally had any issues I have seen a few fora get rude. This is dealt with but this seems to be the price one must pay in these types of environs.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

Pace yourself. Just because it is online does not mean you cannot get overwhelm by the workload. Start off with one or two courses to get a feel for the pacing of the learning. Once you got a grasp jump in fully and enjoy. If you can afford to purchase the certificates I strongly recommend you do so adds an extra incentive to complete you coursework. Do not limit yourself to what you know but do things you have never tried.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

This product is a good means to broaden individual and company knowledge base. Staff developmental needs require unique solutions and Corusera offers a great solution. Beyond just business needs it offers the chance for individuals to improve themselves makes for a better environment.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> Thank you for sharing your positive experience with Coursera for Business! We're glad to hear that you find the variety of topics and on-demand courses valuable.

  ### 28. Best self-taught way to get exposure to a new field

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Tianhao L. | Platform Operation Analyst, Internet, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 05, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

1. Amazing faculty dedicated to creating easy-to-follow videos
2. Various topics at different levels
3. Topics cover both theoretical (mathematics, algorithms) and practical (coding in different languages)

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

If a course already ended, it won't reflect a completion even I finish the homework and exams at self-pace. In those situations, it's hard to show that I have the relevant knowledge/skills without a certificate.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

I would suggest that people take several courses simultaneously in different fields. That sort of mimics a college/university pace. Also I would recommend people take courses at different levels, so that he or she both has confidence-building courses and also gets to challenge oneself in a relatively complex field. For example, I took 3 different classes in machine learning, algorithm and programming in scala. They cover different fields and are of various levels. That experience for me maximized my take-away from Coursera as a platform in a relatively short amount of time.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

For enhancing my knowledge in data science, especially in fields such as machine learning, graphical models, natural language processing, convex optimization, etc.

Benefits were abundant as I started with basic introductory courses that gave me a good feeling of what machine learning is, and then advanced classes such as graphical models show me the elegance of the models and concrete coding homeworks to truly help me grasp the gists.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We're glad to hear that you are enjoying the amazing faculty and the variety of topics available on Coursera for Business. We appreciate your feedback about the completion status of courses and will take it into consideration for future improvements.

  ### 29. Democratizing Education One Course At a Time

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Alex H. | Equity Research Associate, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 05, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

The best thing about Coursera is that not only do they have a wide variety of courses (everything from philosophy to medicine to data science to business), but they also have amazing partnerships with world-class schools (think Johns Hopkins, Wharton, Stanford, etc). For low or no cost, you can learn from experts in the field and get valuable skills that you can apply in your professional or extracurricular interests.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

As with a university, the quality of the courses varies widely. Some professors are highly engaging, and some are incredibly boring. Some courses contain engaging contents and real-world examples, and some contain only theoretical scenarios that have no direct applications or takeaways.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

Many of the courses have free previews, so feel free to try out a course.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I work on a variety of data analysis, business process improvement, and marketing material creation. I've taken Marketing through Wharton, Data Analysis through Johns Hopkins, and Social Psychology through Wesleyan, and applied many of the principles I've learned to create marketing campaigns and write compelling marketing copy, analyze data, and analyze and improve business operations.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> Thank you for the recommendation to try out the free previews of courses. We hope you continue to find value in the skills and knowledge you gain from Coursera for Business.

  ### 30. Coursera Review

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Usman Ehtesham G. | Software Developer, Information Technology and Services, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 05, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

Being taught by amazing professors from top universities within the comfort of your own homes. Lectures are later archived so we can have access to them later. Access to lectures from any device so I listen to them when I am travelling. Variety in courses is amazing as through Coursera, I did courses in Data Structures & Algorithms, learnt Python (which is now my favorite programming language), Data Science and Machine Learning. Another one of the best parts is definitely the fact that we are allowed to take the courses for free.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

I understand that Specializations are provided in Coursera as a means for them to earn money too, but I would still hope they would give access to Capstone projects; I do not expect them to grade it for people who are doing the courses for free but their projects will help us solidify our concepts.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Learning new languages, learning new concepts, learning about new fields in software and doing all of this with an option to do the courses for free.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> Thank you for sharing your positive experience with Coursera. We understand your suggestion about access to Capstone projects and will explore ways to provide more opportunities for learners to solidify their concepts.

I cannot say anything bad about this service. The customer service has always been amazing, the courses are always taught very well. The material that goes with the courses is great. I have always had good experiences with this product.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

Great product for learning a new skill or just brushing up on a skill you already have.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have saved a lot of money buy not having to go to conferences to learn new skills. Coursera is a great tool that has expanded the continued learning at our company, we have even used it for training in certain situations.

Use forums to max to understand how others are interpreting the same content.
Join a course in local group and have discussions to improve the understanding of concepts.

  ### 33. Great natural experience

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 03, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

I like newsletters recommending upcoming courses that I might be interested in. Also, great UI, communication...

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

I wouldn't have much to say. I would like a bit more transparency with payed and free courses and info about that.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Marketing issues. It helped me with social courses and materials

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We're happy to hear that you find our newsletters helpful and our UI great. Your feedback about wanting more transparency with paid and free courses is noted, and we will strive to improve in that area.

  ### 34. Most Amazing Thing Ever!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Lauren M. | Kindergarten Teacher, Education Management, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 06, 2015

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

The best thing about Coursera is that it is FREE! The next best thing is the sheer number of classes they offer. I have taken classes in education, nutrition, finance, computer programming, as well as music appreciation. The classes are of high quality and from accredited universities and colleges. The instructors are passionate about on-line learning, as well as MOOCs. The people who take the classes are from all over the world and they enjoy contributing to the discussion boards and engaging in dialogue about class materials which can be very helpful to everyone's understanding of the subject matter.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

There is a slightly annoying pop-up between videos which asks you to purchase a "verified certificate", but if I wanted to use the course for job advancement, it would not be annoying. Some people find that because the assignments are often "peer-reviewed" that they do not receive the grades they feel they deserve.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

If you are wanting a college course experience, they do have classes that can be taken in succession, but you have to know if your company will accept these courses as legitimate. You do not get credit for the classes, per say.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am a teacher and most of the classes that I take are new learning about education and new ideas for the classroom. I have learned a lot about organization, new frontiers in my field and even about nutrition (just for fun!).

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We're thrilled to hear that you're enjoying the wide variety of high-quality classes available on Coursera, and that you're finding the global community and discussion boards to be helpful. Thank you for sharing your experience!

  ### 35. Experience on Coursera

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Semiconductors | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 13, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

The varied style of teaching, broad but engaging overviews on subjects, quizzes, peer participation and interactions through forums and of course homeworks. These I find the best features to keep me motivated. The fact that education is free in this form is a Utopian's dream!

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

Depending on the instructor, it is easy to loose interest in some courses. Either because the material assumes more prior knowledge than stated or because the subject matter is too focused,

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

I would highly recommend Coursera for getting a thorough overview on a diverse range of topics. These serve not only to educate but also to whet one's appetite and help one learn one's strengths and weaknesses. Focusing on the subject matter that one is strong would undoubtedly help in the workplace and other areas of life!

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

A lot of the courses I have taken have been on data science and analytics geared toward making a transition in my workplace. Benefit - I have been able to change my role in my workplace that better uses the skill set acquired through all the learning on Coursera!

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> Thank you for highlighting the benefits of Coursera for Business in helping you make a transition in your workplace and improve your skill set. We're committed to providing high-quality, diverse courses to meet the needs of our learners and will continue to work on enhancing the overall learning experience.

  ### 36. Good way to improve your knowledge or specialize.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in International Affairs | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 08, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

There are many available courses to choose from and it is very easy to join a course. I also like the idea of specializations.
You can download studying materials. Those are often available on multiple format and you can study on the go.
You can add course badges on your LinkedIn. I am not sure how efficient would be that, but I believe it's a good feature.
Courses are free. If you need a certification you can go to paid option, but you could be eligible for free tuition.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

Peer review are great, but would be good to have also teacher reviews.
Sometimes texts don't match slides or videos, but are fair.
Sometimes videos are longer than necessary and I got the impression that courses are rarely revised or improved.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

It's not the only available option to learn online, but worths to be considered.
You can follow a course and learn whatever you want (among the courses it offers). There are paid option, but you're not forced to pay.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I wanted to learn more about Data Science and R and I found a specialization about that.
I learnt a lot of things both theoretically and practically. Of course, given the subject, learning doesn't stops with the end of courses, but you're supposed to continue on your own.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> Thank you for sharing your positive experience with Coursera for Business. We're happy to hear that you found the studying materials and course badges valuable. We understand your concerns about the course content and will work on improving the consistency and relevance of the materials.

  ### 37. Coursera for finance, computer science, and data science

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** David P. | Associate Quant Analyst, Computer Software, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 08, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

There is a wide variety of subject matter and courses to choose from, in particular courses on the same topic from multiple universities, which may not duplicate material and so complement each other nicely. Many (but not all) courses are tailored to an online setting and well suited to a wide audience without sacrificing challenging material. Other courses are essentially identical to (or held concurrently with) actual university courses, which is useful when you already have background in the subject - there are even some phd-level courses.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

Some courses are poorly presented - the instructor fails to engage effectively (some of them just read off notes), or it feels like the instructor is failing to explain the theory or background underpinning what is being taught. This isn't really a failing on Coursera's part, since it happens all the time in an actual university setting.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

It can be helpful to try multiple courses at once on the same subject, since they may take very different approaches or in some cases teach different material.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I used Coursera to train myself in finance and computer science, which helped me find a job at a financial software company.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We're glad to hear that you found a wide variety of courses to choose from and that they complement each other nicely. We strive to offer diverse and engaging content to meet the needs of our learners.

  ### 38. I took several courses on Coursera and I completed almost all of them.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 07, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

I think it really depends on the single courses. But speaking from a platform point of view, I like how it is organized, the possibility to have perform coding tests, the ability to play the video faster, the fact that, when I took the courses, there was a really wide amount of alternatives of topics I care about on the platform.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

The fact that right now there are not as many courses I'm interested in, the fact the interesting ones are all accessible only after payment (before everything was free) and the fact that the involved institutions are not the ones I care the most.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

If you can find courses you care about (you probably will), then have no fear in taking them, the platform will support you as long as you follow the schedule. If the courses you care about are behind a paywall, then think twice about paying for them.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The reason I took the courses was that I wanted to have an introduction on several close fields, and I got really satisfied with what was available on courser at that time.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> Thank you for sharing your positive experiences with the organization of the platform and the variety of topics available. Your feedback is important to us as we work to enhance our offerings and address user concerns.

  ### 39. Course review of Statistics: Making Sense of Data

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 06, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

The format and flexibility were very suitable to my needs. With a busy work schedule and many family activities during the evenings and weekends, the available time to actually view the course is inconsistent. Coursera allowed me to view the lessons at my convenience matching my schedule.

The instructors were excellent, making the material interesting and fun to watch and learn.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

Some of the questions on the exams were difficult to tie into the lesson conducted.

Some of the deadlines were a challenge to manage with my schedule but the time-frames were clearly stated from the beginning. I knew that there would be weeks where things would get rushed.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

Definitely try it. If you are unsure about a topic and don't want to make a huge initial investment in terms of money and time (driving to and attending official classroom based courses), then this is an excellent medium to accomplish these goals. I would imagine the instructors would make a big difference on the quality of the course and whether the subject matter is presented in way that makes it more conducive for learning. Not sure there is way to adequately determine that before taking a course but as I mentioned before the investment in terms of cost is zero.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I always had an interest and curiosity about statistics but didn't want to pay for a full course or spend the time in a traditional classroom setting. This gave me an opportunity to take a course on statistics in a comfortable setting and a chance to see what the topic was all about before I made any more serious forays into the subject matter.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We're glad to hear that you found the format and flexibility of Coursera suitable to your needs. Our goal is to make learning accessible and convenient for busy professionals like you.

  ### 40. Life Long Learning

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Elliot S. | Managing Director, Market Research, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 05, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

Coursera has a wide range of offerings from the top institutions around the world, allowing me to either supplement learning for my career or just for the sake of learning new topic areas. I have had the opportunity to learn from a multitude of disciplines for personal pleasure like Programming Video Games in R, Music of the Beatles, Music of the Rolling Stones, Music Theory, History of Rock n' Roll, Intro to Astronomy (more like astrophysics) to courses that further support my career like Intro to Marketing, Content Strategy, Business Strategy, Statistics, Specialization in Social Media and a Specialization in Digital Marketing.

Did I mention that the courses are free?

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

Not much to dislike other than some courses are only offered during certain times of the year. I would be helpful if these courses were offered on "demand."

At times some of the peer reviews seem to be graded unevenly and with highly subjective evaluations.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

I suggest that others peruse the wide array of topic areas and course content and try a course or two just for fun, particularly that the only cost is time and the ability to learn something new.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The two Specialization courses that I took on Digital Marketing and Social Media have been helping me to ferret through the complications of developing strategies and implementing them to improve our presence and use of Social Media and Digital Marketing strategies.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> Thank you for sharing your positive experience with Coursera for Business! We're glad to hear that you've been able to explore a wide range of topics and that the courses have been beneficial for both personal and professional development.

  ### 41. Coursera online courses in Astronomy, Cosmology and Astrobiology

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Martin B. | Tralokinumab Global Development Team Science Lead, Drug Development, Pharmaceuticals, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 05, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

The ease of navigation around the platform is a very big plus for me. I also prefer online courses which have a deadline as this helps set me objectives which are time bound.. I especially enjoy the challenges of the problem solving/quizzes and above all really like the learning from accessing some external websites which are part of some, but not all courses.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

There is very little to dislike and out of the 14 courses I have completed to date, none I would consider to have no value. The only limitation is that in the subject area which interests me seems to not be added to with more advanced courses, for which I would be happy to pay. I have used EdX for this purpose.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

Try it and see how easy it is to use. Go for courses that are time bound as this will help drive you.
Compare it with providers of other MOOCs for versatility and ease of access from one or m ore devices.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Coursera predominantly for pleasure as my hobby is in Astronomy, Cosmology and Astrobiology. For my full time employment, I have used Coursera courses to teach me programming skills which at present is to develop a skill set which have use in future.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We appreciate your recommendation and are delighted to hear that Coursera for Business has been a valuable resource for your learning journey. We will continue to work on expanding our course offerings, including more advanced courses in your area of interest. Thank you for choosing Coursera for your educational needs.

  ### 42. Great way to learn about a wide variety of subjects

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Chemicals | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 05, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

Wide variety of courses in many different subject areas. Very good professors from a diverse set of universities and organizations. The ability to take many courses on my schedule. Discussion boards with people throughout the world help broaden your perspective on the topic.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

Nothing that I dislike. I do not pay to get validated certificates. I just take the classes to learn about the topics covered in the classes. Having my assignments graded by other students in the class can be a problem for some people, but I haven't had any issues.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

As someone not looking to use Coursera to improve my employment prospects, I see no need to pay for a validated certificate. I just want to learn the material. However I understand why others would want to do so. I also understand why Coursera seems to be moving more towards a "pay" business model instead of "free". I have liked getting the simple PDF certificates showing that I completed the classes I took, but I'm not willing to pay for them.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

No business problems. I take the classes for personal development and enjoyment.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We're glad to hear that you are enjoying the wide variety of courses and the flexibility of scheduling on Coursera. Thank you for sharing your positive experience!

  ### 43. My go-to MOOC offering

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Retail | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 05, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

I enjoy the quality and variety of content and course offerings on Coursera. The ability to audit (for free) is imperative, as there are times when the course syllabus does not match my expectations.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

At times, I wish there were was a way to ask a teacher/TA/proctor a direct question -- this is especially apparent when it comes to practical application of certain technical topics/methods. I would much rather "pay for real advice" than "pay for a certificate".

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

I would suggest auditing a few courses (for free) to get a feel for the platform. In addition, I feel each University/Institution approaches Coursera slightly differently -- therefore, you may want to explore a variety of offerings before selecting a course/school to see which "culture" feels right for you and will yield you the most benefit. In addition, paying for a course/specialization will likely make you more accountable. Alternatively, consider taking a course with a buddy/colleague/peer and challenge yourselves to complete the work on time and hold each other accountable.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I solve a variety of data science and analytical problems in my work. Having access to breadth/depth in this space has allowed me to attack problems in new and innovative ways. In addition, I have been able to introduce others to new methods, techniques, and tools. My coding skills have improved greatly and my perspective is more broad. Finally, my confidence, with respect to approaching data science problems with the correct methods/process, has improved significantly.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> Thank you for sharing your recommendations for others considering Coursera for Business. We appreciate your insights and will continue to work on providing a diverse and beneficial learning experience for all users.

  ### 44. Great self learning tool

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Entertainment | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 13, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

Most of the classes are put together by professionals and academics. You can move with your own pace (with certain restrictions). You can also download the videos and watch them online.
The assignments are helping you understand and practice the concepts.
Forums is a good resource to ask questions, engage others, and to find solutions to problems you encounterr

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

The courses are not offered all the time, oftentimes you have to wait until the new session starts.
While you have flexibility in how fast you move, typically you still have to submit projects / homeworks by a given deadline.
Some of the courses are not that great quality, it varies.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

It's a great platform

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I could improve my skills for my professional field. It also a great tool to learn new skills that are not necessarily related to your profession.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We're glad to hear that you're enjoying the flexibility and quality of our courses, as well as the helpful resources like forums and assignments.

  ### 45. Want to learn something? This the place!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Lauren M. | Teacher, Education Management, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 14, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

Coursera is free! There are also a ton of classes with high-quality video lectures. They even have series of courses to specialize in a topic.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

The classes cannot be counted as professional development in my particular school district/ state.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

You will not receive credits. However, some places accept certificates from coursera for credit.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have been able to learn about many topics in education on my own, at my own pace. I have been able to apply what I have learned to my job. Game theory, Blended Learning, Dyslexia intervention, etc.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> Thank you for sharing your positive experience with Coursera for Business. It's great to hear that Coursera for Business has been beneficial for your learning and job application.

  ### 46. Coursera is an amazing learning opportunity

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 05, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

I enjoy an opportunity to learn about things that I did not learn as a college student. For example, I was always interested in psychology, but got B.S. in chemistry. With coursera I can follow my passion. I also find it useful to use some of the materials from MOOCs I have taken to use for the classes that I am teaching.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

The site interface became a little bit confusing recently. There is no clear search algorithm and it is hard to determine what is the level of a course I am about to take.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

- Make you goals clear.
- Select the content that is appropriate.
- Form study groups.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I learned several important skill such as how to negotiate, conflict solving. Some of the teacher education courses were extremely useful.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We're glad to hear that Coursera has provided you with the opportunity to pursue your passion for psychology and apply the materials to your teaching. We appreciate your feedback about the site interface and will take it into consideration for future improvements.

  ### 47. A wonderful online learning experience

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Weikang S. | Customer Support Engineer, Computer Software, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 05, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

The diversity of knowledge available to learn on Coursera, ranging from computer science and mathematics to psychology and ethics.

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

I would like to see some features implemented, such as calendar syncing of due dates and other reminders.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

Check out some of the paid, but more in-depth courses that provide more detailed education on a particular topic.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am learning for my own knowledge appreciation and improvement with hopes that this new information will lead to a better career down the road.

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> We're delighted to hear that you're enjoying the diverse learning opportunities on Coursera for Business. Thank you for sharing your feedback about the desired features such as calendar syncing and reminders. We'll take this into account as we continue to improve our platform. We appreciate your recommendation to explore the paid, in-depth courses for a more detailed education. It's fantastic to hear that Coursera is supporting your personal and career development goals.

  ### 48. Great opportunity to delve into topics I wouldn't get the chance otherwise

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Simona O. | Associate, Financial Services, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 05, 2016

**What do you like best about Coursera for Business?**

- the breadth of course topics;
- the offerings of highly reputable institutions and lecturers;
- the opportunity to discuss with others undertaking the course: forums;
- the flexibility it offers to work in your own time;
- the certificates proving completion (some show level as well).

**What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?**

It is difficult to be sure that others are not cheating on the assignments which can make it frustrating as it detracts from the reputation and how these certificates are perceived, or it prevents them from becoming a solid basis to prove your knowledge/competency in a certain area.

**Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:**

Not used as part of my job, so never in a position to implement it in my team, used for personal purposes.

**What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?**

N/a

**Official Response from Shilpa Shetty C:**

> Thank you for sharing your positive experiences with Coursera for Business. We are continuously working to ensure the credibility of the certificates and the overall learning experience for our users.
