**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Biotechnology | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 29, 2020

**What do you like best about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

COMSOL has been utilized for simpler tasks for my lab regarding basic fluid flow in a microfluidic device. Although not used for a complex system, the software has a good setup between the mathematical analysis and inputted 3D design model. It is relatively easy to learn with a set of good tutorials that can be found throughout the web even for beginner users, although this may take a little longer.

**What do you dislike about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

The main dislike of COMSOL is the amount of processing speed that is required to run even simple models in the software along with the results and some of the interfaces could be updated to be more user friendly.

**Recommendations to others considering COMSOL Multiphysics®:**

My recommendation for those that are considering using COMSOL is that it is a good software for a range of modeling options, including fluid dynamics, and that if you need help in developing a model there are a range of Youtube that can be easily found to learn the basics. Another recommendation is that the computer that is going to be utilizing the software should have a good amount of RAM and drivers to support higher end modeling in order to not slow the process down. Before purchasing the software I would look for tutorials that are geared toward your interests if you are not an advanced user to help with the starting process of using the software.

**What problems is COMSOL Multiphysics® solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The COMSOL software is being utilized to model fluid flow through a variety of microfluidic devices for different fluids and designs.

  ### 9. Not the best but real good

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Chad H. | Chemist, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 25, 2019

**What do you like best about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

Modelling in COMSOL is thereabouts to easy. If you are a beginner, online tutorials on their website is so helpful for basic stuff. However, it is not enough for handling your job, you need to improve by practising. We are modelling chemical reactions by using COMSOL, after that we compare the results with our hand calculations and real reaction results. Almost always simulation results fits with real experiment results.

**What do you dislike about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

I wish they would put more tutorials on their website. They have a small tutorial library, needs to be extended.

**What problems is COMSOL Multiphysics® solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am using it for modelling my semiconductor experiments. Mostly on nanoscales with silicon and germanium stuff. It is good so far, but I am looking for a better alternative.

  ### 10. A great simulation platform and versatile tool capable of simulating things from stresses to waves

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Apoorva K. | Undergraduate Teaching Assistant for Mechanical Systems and Controls, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 26, 2019

**What do you like best about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

Comsol allows for creating physics simulations. I have personally used it for acoustics simulations to model plane waves, and in design projects to test various hypotheses. The application builder-server system is definitely a plus point and helps tailor simulations to personal needs

**What do you dislike about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

Most attributes are very likeable. However, I do believe that the resolution of plots and animations could be made better. The model tree on the left also appears clunky at times. There is a potential for making the interface easier to discern.

**Recommendations to others considering COMSOL Multiphysics®:**

It's an exciting platform. Do try to spend time on if you are interested in modelling complex physical systems and/or designing innovative materials with desirable acoustic properties

**What problems is COMSOL Multiphysics® solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am using COMSOL for my research in acoustics. We are trying to design materials with specific properties that help us achieve desired acoustic effects (such as maximum transmission and low reflectivity)

**Reviewed Date:** October 28, 2019

**What do you like best about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

COMSOL has a comprensive user interface. Especially for beginners, helps to set up multiphysics structures with the help of an interactive assistant.

**What do you dislike about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

It requires a very powerful hardware, especially in terms of RAM. Complex simulations require hours of computation, but results are guaranteed. Is challenging and very hard the first approach, but even if sometimes tutorial are not very complete, the community is willing to help.

**What problems is COMSOL Multiphysics® solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I worked a lot with thermofluid related problem. I was capable to carrying out complex simulations about lab-on-a-chip (LOC) devices. Thanks to COMSOL I was able to design the model and perform analytic and numeric calculations very quickly.

**What do you like best about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

Very user-friendly
Plenty of libraries
Great user manual and tutorials and resources
Perfect for beginners and advanced

**What do you dislike about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

The black box aspect of its calculations (unlike processors like Samcef or Lsdyna where I get to see the processing and understand enough to debug)

  ### 14. Awesome analytical operations

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Hardik Y. | Teaching Assistant , Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 27, 2019

**What do you like best about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

Ease of 3D- Modelling and report friendly, specially for researchers. Accurate finite element analysis for all different domains.

**What do you dislike about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

The software assumes a joint between cross-members of a frame, by default. This should not be the case. The default for cross members should be "no joint" unless the user defines them.

**Recommendations to others considering COMSOL Multiphysics®:**

Do not use the finite element results for ends of members. They will be inaccurate for any software.

**What problems is COMSOL Multiphysics® solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am using COMSOL for my reasearch work which deals with finite element modelling. Apart from this, I also use it for my graduate courses.

  ### 15. FEM tool specially for fluids

The ability to simulate multi-physics problems with ease. For example, in electrical engineering, Maxwell's equations play a major role and this software runs on these equations. Hence, one can literally simulate anything and even integrate it to super computer.

**What do you dislike about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

Price is too high for students to get hands on experience. Academic license also costs a lot making it difficult to access.

**Recommendations to others considering COMSOL Multiphysics®:**

Take a trial license and work on example problems

**What problems is COMSOL Multiphysics® solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Electromagnetics, computational fluid dynamics

  ### 17. Powerful but steep learning curve

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Research | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 01, 2019

**What do you like best about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

Powerful physics simulator. Able to combine multiple type of physics (e.g. structural mechanics and fluid thermodynamics). Graphical user interface decent and makes learning the basics of the program more easy. Support varies, sometime it can be fantastic. Honestly, not much I like about the program other than it's (very important) ability to do what I need.

**What do you dislike about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

Super-duper expensive - or at least I assume so because the entire university only has 4 licenses available for research use on the supercomputers and a limited number (like 1 or 2) of the modules. While simple simulations are easy to create and run, advanced simulations are very difficult to do and often fail. The error codes when a simulation fails are mysterious and generally unhelpful. Meshing is f*** asinine! When you change one tiny, seemingly inconsequential thing, the mesh will either magically work or completely fail.

**Recommendations to others considering COMSOL Multiphysics®:**

Tutorials, tutorials, tutorials!

**What problems is COMSOL Multiphysics® solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am modeling structural mechanics of biological tissue. I use the structural mechanics module in frequency domain and use LiveLink with MATLAB to run multiple simulations with different stimulating frequencies or model sizes. I output the results as text files and do all post-processing in MATLAB.

  ### 18. "COMSOL - A powerful finite element Software"

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ivan H. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 19, 2018

**What do you like best about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

COMSOL presents a good interaction between physical-mathematical section and geometrical features definition. I usually use the AC/DC module and it is really useful in order to simulate electrical circuits or heating due to electrical current. It's possible to import dwg files in geometry tab.
It is versatile and it offers a good interface with Matlab to convert your data and to calculate other variables.
The software is able to make models in 3D, 2D and 1D and the results can be observed in these modes.

**What do you dislike about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

It is difficult to define correctly all of boundary values in order to achieve a correct simulation. They must be controlled to have some expected results. Moreover, when the meshing is refined, the computing time rises. There are a lot of extra modules and it rises the price. It is due to the amount of memory that is required to run a simulation.

**Recommendations to others considering COMSOL Multiphysics®:**

COMSOL is a good tool to simulate any process because of the wide variety of physics. Moreover, it is easy to find tutorial or description of simulation in forums about it. The results can be shown by means of multiple ways and it has a great accuracy. It is a powerful working tool to know the behaviour of a physical process.

**What problems is COMSOL Multiphysics® solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use COMSOL to simulate electrical circuits or to characterize the thermal distribution in a sample. It allows to know the behavior of each component and to measure for example temperature, current or voltage.

  ### 19. Comsol User Experience and Capabilities

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Pavan K. | Graduate Student in Mechanical Engineering , Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 29, 2018

**What do you like best about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

The best thing about this tool is it got the flexibility which no commercial tool has got. One can easily solve any well-posed problem by providing their own equations.

Easy to use and great penetration in universities.

**What do you dislike about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

All the equations are solved using the finite element method and Finite volume method is considered standard for solving flow problems in the industry. I hope there were some capabilities for FVM in comsol

**Recommendations to others considering COMSOL Multiphysics®:**

I would definitely recommend this tool for students, since its a great tool for learning.

**What problems is COMSOL Multiphysics® solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I was using this as a STUDENT worked on solving simple flow and heat transfer problems. Its a great tool for the beginner in CFD field since it provided the deep understanding of which equations and how they are solved, unlike the other tools which are basically black boxes without CFD basics.

  ### 20. Thermal, electrical, transport issue modeling expert

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Electrical/Electronic Manufacturing | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 09, 2018

**What do you like best about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

COMSOL is very easy to use. If you just watch a video clip that is provided by the company, you can use the software immediately. Also, you can easily combine both physics at the same time. For general situations, COMSOL can let you set up any arbitrary equation, boundary conditions so that you will be able to model very simply but with very high precision.

**What do you dislike about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

Not that I can think of. I generally satisfied with all the features of the software. One thing is that it would be better to show or explain the solving options more easily so that user can actually know what modification of solving option can impact the final results.

**Recommendations to others considering COMSOL Multiphysics®:**

This easy graphic user interface FEM simulation tool can be a very strong, and intuitive software if you are considering to do modeling studies for your research. Before making actual products, this modeling can be a fast and efficient way to prove the current layout or design which can enhance your product reliability or the performance.

**What problems is COMSOL Multiphysics® solving and how is that benefiting you?**

For any issues (e.g., reliability, performance, thermal) of modern ICs, numerical modeling is essential for product design. We can do such a modeling by using COMSOL. Moreover, you can optimize the geometric structure. The best part of this product is that you can eventually extract your designed simulation file by an app so that anybody who is not familiar with modeling can use the software as well.

What I like best is the opportunities that this software brings to you to simulate every condition that you can imagine. Each impossible equation can be solved with this software.

**What do you dislike about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

What I dislike about Comsol is the processing capability. You will need a powerful computer if you want to obtain solutions for your problem because this software evaluates any condition. Perhaps, to make the simulation less heavy the software could avoid some of the calculations which it carries out

**What problems is COMSOL Multiphysics® solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Simulation of acoustic conditions in solid bodies

  ### 24. Comsol multiphysics - a software for mems and nems

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Arun D. | Automotive Design Engineer, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 23, 2017

**What do you like best about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

I had been using HYPERMESH for meshing and ANSYS previously for post analysis during my previos projects and thesis works but once i got introduced to COMSOL it has been a tool that does both of them and even stress analysis. I am amused by the complex mathematical solvong techniques of the software.

**What do you dislike about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

Default algorithms of partial diffrential equations cannot be user defined. Occupies lot of memmory during processing results which at times slows my PC.

**Recommendations to others considering COMSOL Multiphysics®:**

COMSOL Is growing in popularity among researchers. Comsol is a one stop tool which does any kind of analysis thrown at it ,may it be a stress analysis or mathematical equations. The results that COMSOL has provided and has been very precise and accurate and thus COMSOL is highly reliable and recommendable.

**What problems is COMSOL Multiphysics® solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have used COMSOL for my thesis work for analysis of various temperature gradiants and stress analysis at different layers of composite material.

  ### 27. Great Application-Oriented PDE solver

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 24, 2018

**What do you like best about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

The barrier to entry in COMSOL is almost zero, it lets you get up and running in the same day, whereas something like Mathematica or Matlab require months before you might feel comfortable enough to even start to solve these sorts of problems, and even then I look back at my old code in those programs and shake my head. By comparison, I've seen undergraduate students in our lab go from zero to pro with COMSOL in relatively short order. Also, you quite simply cannot beat the CAD modeling. You can solve for all sorts of complicated geometries that are at best extremely difficult in another program. Additionally, they have amongst the best and most accessible of support staff who are willing to help you with any intelligent question you have.

**What do you dislike about COMSOL Multiphysics®?**

Because of the meshing, I never trust the answer that COMSOL gives me. I wish it had more features that seem like they should be easy enough to implement (like checks for how refined a mesh needs to be in a particular place). Sure, you can get started right away, but making sure you have the right answer, that can actually be more challenging than you imagine. Also, apart from the built-in functions for physics, it can be really hard to figure out how to numerically solve pure and applied math problems that don't fit neatly in their packages.

**Recommendations to others considering COMSOL Multiphysics®:**

They have great support (which is what you're really paying for with their licensing). I recommend preparing a word document with figures and text if you really want the highest-quality support. Also if you're looking to get started, video tutorials are great as it's a highly visual language/product. Also, look for local free or nearly-free seminars, COMSOL puts these on and they get you up and running super fast, and will give you a free 2-3-week evaluation of the program, all modules included.

**What problems is COMSOL Multiphysics® solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have numerous publications with COMSOL solving PDEs for a variety of real-world problems.

  ### 28. I Used Comsol Multiphysics to Solve Mechanical and electrical Coupled to analysis the damage.
