"Fix of issue when backup failed to see disks on server"

1/5

What do you like best about Comet Backup?

It is easy to use, it works on all operating systems and does what it says. You can install it quietly in the background across muliple servers quite quickly.

The support desk is knowledgable for the most but like all support desks the 1st line engineers sometimes need to know a little more than they do to be able to escalate problems quicker. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Comet Backup?

The cost of the sevice changed and the amount they are asking is not viable for a small business. then to ask us to pay more for self hosting than paying you cloud hosting is the joke of the day. It doesn't cost you anything for us to host it but youwant us to pay you for using our own equipment. As far as i am aware my Boss is looking to move away form your brand by the end of the year which is ashame as i like it other than the cost. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Comet Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?

"From affordable to absurd: The Comet Backup debacle..."

0/5

What do you like best about Comet Backup?

Well the back-ups are working nicely on our own hardware. Not many issues when it's up and running. Updating the Comet Backup software is easy. Most of the customers understand how to restore. And pricing is good (or at least it was). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Comet Backup?

As a long-standing customer of Comet Backup, approaching five years now, I feel compelled to share my experiences. Overall, we’ve been relatively satisfied. However, the support has been consistently slow and underwhelming. Critical issues, even those marked as urgent, often take several business days to address, with no support available over the weekends. Fortunately, our in-house technicians manage to resolve 90% of the issues, mitigating the need for Comet Backup’s sluggish support. In essence, don't expect much from Comet Backup's support team.

That being said, the backup product itself generally works well and is reasonably user-friendly for most of our clients. A small number of our server customers find it somewhat confusing or difficult to navigate. We've encountered multiple instances where clients, intending to restore a single website, inadvertently restore entire servers, leading to crashes due to insufficient disk space. The most frequent complaint revolves around the interface, which, to be honest, could use some significant improvements. But let's face it, nothing is perfect, and Comet Backup is no exception.

Performance-wise, it’s decent. Small backups take approximately 15 to 45 minutes, whereas larger servers can extend the process to 6 to 8 hours. While far from stellar, the performance is acceptable considering the cost.

Given the price point, coupled with our own backup hardware, Comet Backup’s solution has performed as expected. Like many others, we pay $2.00 per server per month, which is quite reasonable, especially since we use our own hardware. Comet Backup merely provides the software. If any hardware fails, we bear the replacement costs ourselves, as Comet Backup offers no hardware support. We have submitted merely 10 support tickets over the years, often resolving issues internally due to the glacial pace of Comet Backup’s support (which, as a reminder, is non-existent on weekends).

In light of the above, the $2.00 per server per month fee was acceptable.

However, Comet Backup is about to undergo a drastic transformation. Instead of remaining one of the most affordable backup solutions, it’s set to become one of the most exorbitantly priced. Starting in 2025, in addition to the $2.00 per server per month, we will also be required to pay an outrageous $199.00 per month. This colossal increase is unfathomable. Are we using Comet Backup’s support? No. Will there be changes to the products or services? No. Will Comet Backup maintain or replace our hardware? No. Will their support improve? No. The only change is a significant price hike, making the service excessively expensive.

It seems Comet Backup has decided to milk its customers for every penny. While we anticipated a price increase at some point, perhaps an extra $1.00 per server per month, this astronomical surge is simply unjustifiable. We will certainly not be paying the additional $199.00 per month. This translates to an extra $2388.00 per year, a sum we cannot justify to our clients. We have annual contracts with our server clients, making it impossible to pass this cost onto them, nor do we intend to.

Given the overwhelmingly negative reactions to this price increase on various platforms (social media, forums, etc.), I suspect Comet Backup is digging its own grave and may not survive in the short term. Like many others I’ve spoken to, we are actively seeking alternative solutions. We have tested 12 different backup solutions extensively and are currently considering four of them. We will definitely no longer do business with Comet Backup. They have become too unreliable, treating MSPs harshly despite their MSP-friendly claims.

I predict Comet Backup will either cease to exist after 2025 or sell out to a larger company. This apparent cash grab seems aimed at inflating their revenue to attract potential buyers. Such practices are far from normal. While price increases are expected in the hosting sector, this extreme hike is unacceptable! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Comet Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?

We needed a solid back-up solution for our servers (including MySQL/MariaDB databases). Preferably with our own brand. Easy to install and should work with all kind of servers (Plesk, DirectAdmin, LAMP, etc.). We also wanted to use our own hardware, because to limit the datatraffic cost. Besides all that we were looking for an affordable back-up solution. All things came down to one solution: Comet Backup! Or so we thought... Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Honest and clear pricing! Or so it seemed..."

0/5

What do you like best about Comet Backup?

In 2019, we were attracted to Comet Backup by the clear and transparent pricing advertised on their website. The promise of paying only for the devices we used was very appealing, as it allowed us to offer cost-effective backup solutions to our customers.

The initial setup, while somewhat time-consuming and challenging, ultimately proved worthwhile. Despite some difficulties during this phase, the platform's usability has generally been a positive experience. Although we continue to receive weekly inquiries from customers regarding the complexity of Comet Backup, the overall feedback has been favorable. Our customers appreciate that the software reliably performs its primary function—creating backups.

Moreover, adding new devices to the system is a straightforward process, which enhances the platform's practicality for our clients. Overall, Comet Backup has enabled us to provide dependable backup services, aligning with our commitment to customer satisfaction. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Comet Backup?

We initially transitioned from IASO (SolarWinds) to Comet Backup due to a price increase by SolarWinds, enticed by Comet Backup's promise of stable pricing. When we joined Comet Backup in 2019, their website prominently featured the promise: "Simple Pricing. Grow your bottom line with our simple, profitable per device pricing." This assurance was a significant factor in our decision, as it suggested we would avoid unexpected cost increases.

As early adopters, we have been loyal customers since 2019 or possibly earlier. However, on April 29th, we were informed of an enormous price increase of $199.00 per month, amounting to nearly $2400.00 annually. This sudden hike is not only shocking but also unacceptable. Despite still paying per device, this additional charge feels exorbitant and unjustified. We find this situation untenable and have decided we cannot absorb this unexpected cost increase.

This experience feels like a repeat of past disappointments, only this time with Comet Backup. The trust we placed in their pricing stability has been severely undermined, and we are now compelled to seek an alternative solution once again.

Moreover, the quality of Comet Backup's customer support has been consistently disappointing. Support tickets are often escalated by automated systems, leading to significant delays before receiving a response. If a ticket is submitted on a Friday, it is unrealistic to expect any resolution over the weekend, even for critical issues. Responses are generally delayed until Monday, which is frustrating and inefficient.

However, the primary and most pressing concern is the recent and substantial price increase. We have always appreciated the honest, per-device pricing model, but this unexpected $199.00 per month increase is simply unacceptable. It feels like a betrayal of the initial promise and a breach of trust. We feel misled and are extremely dissatisfied with this development. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Comet Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?

Affordable and reliable backups were the primary reasons we switched to Comet Backup in early 2019, or possibly late 2018, from IASO (now owned by SolarWinds). We sought a robust and cost-effective solution for backing up servers and hosting accounts, and Comet Backup appeared to meet our requirements perfectly.

Comet Backup has consistently performed as expected. We schedule daily backups for files and databases across approximately 200 devices with minimal issues. The only challenges we encounter are with some lower-end servers that lack sufficient memory. Despite this, Comet Backup functions effectively and reliably, providing the dependable service we need.

Overall, Comet Backup has proven to be a solid choice for our backup needs, delivering on its promise of affordability and reliability. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Okay software, shady pricing strategies"

0.5/5

What do you like best about Comet Backup?

The UI of the software is good, the recent refresh was needed and has helped bring the overall experience up. Backup times are good, and very network-efficient, at the expense of memory on the machine doing the backup. I like the reports and how flexible they are in scheduling, reducing how often you need to access the interface itself. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Comet Backup?

Restore times are very, very slow, even when restoring 1 file from a shared folder. I have had 2 Hyper-V VM restores totally fail, as Comet wasn't backing up the entire VHDX file, just the "latest snapshot with change tracking" - which is just that, only the differencing disk, not the parent disk.. misleading.

Recently the increase in Hyper-V and self hosting pricing has caused me to re-evaluate my continued use of Comet. The price increases equate to a 10x increase in my monthly Comet bill (not storage), which unfortunately makes me unable to recommend them. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Comet Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?

"From hero to zero - Pricing hikes now make Comet Backup untenable for many organisations"

What do you like best about Comet Backup?

Flexible storage options.

Can host on Linux, or other OSes if you prefer.

Rebranding options. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Comet Backup?

Comet Backup's recent pricing changes are disgraceful.

Simple advice, do not base your backup strategy on this product.

Many companies who have been using it for a long time have just experienced a massive 'rug pull', courtesy of exorbitant price hikes for self-hosting.

Comet are trying to portray these price changes as beneficial, and claim that some companies have expressed positive views on them. The spin is strong at Comet now over these changes, but it's overwhelmingly a negative move.

Pricing increases are to be expected, but this particular change is egregiously calculated.

On principle we have no other option but to consider, and migrate, to other solutions. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Comet Backup solving and how is that benefiting you?

It used to solve one aspect of our backups, but will no longer figure in our plans. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Comet Backup?

I've been paying for the per device licensing for a while now. Product seems to work ok. Out of nowhere, they go from $0 for self hosting to $1200 / year. Insane money grab.

Don't trust this company to honor the time you've invested in setting it up or your promises to your customers. They'll pull the rug out and substantially change the pricing model overnight.
