**What do you like best about Coder?**

What I like best about Coder is the control and consistency it brings to our development environments. Since it's self-hosted, we have full visibility and control over where our code and data live, which matters a lot for our security and compliance needs. The Terraform-defined templates mean every developer gets a consistent, reproducible workspace instead of dealing with "works on my machine" issues, and new team members can be up and running in minutes rather than losing a day or more to local environment setup. It also fits well into our existing infrastructure since it runs on Kubernetes/VMs rather than locking us into a specific cloud, and the ability to use VS Code, JetBrains, or a browser-based IDE gives developers the flexibility to work the way they prefer. On top of that, workspaces autostop when idle, which has helped keep our compute costs in check.

**What do you dislike about Coder?**

"What I dislike about Coder is that the initial setup and configuration can be fairly involved, especially around writing and maintaining Terraform templates if you're not already comfortable with Terraform — there's a real learning curve for teams new to infrastructure-as-code. Documentation, while improving, can still leave gaps for more advanced or less common configurations, so we've had to rely on community forums or trial and error to work through certain issues. We've also occasionally run into networking/connectivity hiccups (things like intermittent workspace connection drops or slower performance depending on network conditions), which can be frustrating mid-task. Since it's self-hosted, we're also responsible for the underlying infrastructure maintenance and upgrades ourselves, which adds operational overhead compared to a fully managed SaaS alternative. Finally, some newer features or integrations feel like they're still maturing, so we occasionally hit rough edges compared to more established tools in the space

**What problems is Coder solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Coder is solving the problem of inconsistent, hard-to-manage local development environments across our team — before, new developers would lose significant time to environment setup, and "works on my machine" issues were common when configurations drifted between team members. It's also addressing our need for tighter security and compliance around where code and data reside, since self-hosting keeps everything within our own infrastructure rather than scattered across individual laptops. The benefit has been faster onboarding for new team members, fewer environment-related bugs and support requests, and more consistent, reproducible workspaces across the team via our Terraform templates. It's also helped with cost efficiency, since idle workspaces autostop instead of running (and costing us) around the clock, and it's given us more flexibility to support developers who prefer different IDEs without maintaining separate setup documentation for each one

**What do you like best about Coder?**

I used Coder for a fintech startup that required strict security capabilities and isolation. Coder provided us with a sandbox environment, which was crucial since we couldn't set up anything locally. Having a ready-to-go workspace for coding was a plus because it had all the requirements set up right from the start. This avoided the common 'it works on my machine' issue, allowing everyone to have the same setup, which definitely increased productivity. Also, compared to GitHub Workspaces, Coder performed quite better, especially with its management of the sandbox environment.

**What do you dislike about Coder?**

I didn't really understand the problem Coder was trying to solve with the AI and Coder agents they added later on. It just didn't resonate with its original positioning of being an isolated coding environment for security-sensitive teams. Additionally, it's still not a near-native experience, as much as they try to sell it that way. Coding on a native application is smoother and more customizable. We had expectations within the team to have the same setup, so we didn't use customizable shells or commands beyond what everyone agreed on. Also, there were latency concerns, which affected the experience. Setting up Coder was a bit confusing at first, though not overly hard, I'd rate it a six out of ten for initial setup ease.

**What problems is Coder solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Coder provided a secure sandbox environment, ensuring compliance and consistency across all developers' setups. It increased productivity by having uniform workspaces and outperformed similar tools in latency. However, its move towards AI didn't resonate with my needs.

**What do you like best about Coder?**

easily collaboration and oauth2 integration for custom apps + github

UX isn't my fortey but my users absolutely love the web gui... I typically use desktop interractions with coder in that I connect via emacs tramp but I work with a cross disciplined team which accesses jupyter + vscode ONLY in the browser so it's appreciated! 

getting highly-performant nodes and being able to launch a cost-control dashboard is also quite nifty (we made our own) 

We use free coder but eventually it's likely we'll want more auth supported integrations and will make the transition to enterprise but it provides great value

onboarding new users is quite easy as well. We are a github based team and and non-coders commit code through jupyter, but being able to login via the github oauth integration and then commit through jupyter plugins makes it simple for tthem

Coding agent support isn't something we've pursued but the entire team is excided about potentially using AI agents outside of jupyter-ai so we will likely be using them via the coder interfaces

**What do you dislike about Coder?**

I wish all features were free obviously, but even though I don't yet need enterprise I'll likely buy just to support the org as our reliance on it would mean being negatively impacted if Coder did not succeed as a company.

Collaboration, time to being productive for new emloyees, empowering non-coding users to start working and contributing effectively and supports many types of environments.

**What do you like best about Coder?**

I like that a workspace in Coder can be anything. I can provision it in a k8s pod, on an AWS EC2 instance, or any cloud VM. We can provision it on a powerful bare metal machine, and it will speed up compile time tremendously. I also appreciate how it speeds up the inner dev loop. Developers can work on low-end machines like 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD Macs, but they have a system that's 100 GB with 64 cores to develop. Compiling large codebases is really fast, which helps devs stay focused and productive. The tool standardizes workspaces so that everyone uses the same dependencies, speeding up onboarding by allowing devs to access a fully configured cloud development environment. We also think it improves security. Overall, Coder is a great tool that makes us more productive.

**What do you dislike about Coder?**

It's not as plug and play as their competitors like GitPod or GitHub Codespaces. Also, I'm responsible for keeping the Coder control pane updated.

**What do you like best about Coder?**

I like that the UI of Coder is very simple. There are no hard-to-figure-out actions or hidden knobs that I need to work out. I can just click and use, which is so important for getting up to speed immediately. The first time I used Coder, I was able to click the right buttons and get set up right away with no hiccups at all. Compared to other products, especially those that are AI coded with too many confusing features that aren't needed, Coder stands out in its simplicity and ease of use. The initial setup was extremely simple too, with no complaints at all.

**What do you dislike about Coder?**

I think integration with more IDEs would be nicer. I'm not sure if there is a command to quickly set up, SSH a terminal. Maybe there is, maybe there isn't. I usually use JetBrains products as my main IDE, not Cursor or Visual Studio Code. The last time I used Coder, it didn't have native support in these environments.

I use Coder to quickly spin up dev environments and self-contain changes. It makes it easier to manage agents via SSH compared to multiple Git work trees locally, which helps with large repositories.

The ease of it working across environments, ability to manage environments, and smooth performance is great.

I would say the troubleshooting guide, resource usage view, and workspace performance could be improved. It would be helpful to have context-aware error messages and a built-in diagnostic tool. Seeing clear real-time metrics on workspace and user level, such as CPU, memory, and disk, would be great. Also, more transparency into what's affecting performance would be beneficial. Configuring templates, infrastructure, and access control also took some time.

It's not always seamless when you have complex networking setups, say, linking to internal resources. And sometimes I'd like even more flexibility on the IDE side. But those are refinements. Overall, it's pretty solid.

I love how Coder eliminates the 'it works on my machine' excuse by letting me spin up a workspace from a Terraform template, matching the exact environment the team uses. The speed is easily the best part; I can spin up a massive Spring Boot project and have IntelliJ shared indexes ready almost instantly. Coder handles the resource drain by offloading heavy workloads to powerful server hardware, which provides a low-latency connection that feels local but with cloud power. I also appreciate the security, as my code stays on our infrastructure, eliminating worries about IP theft if my hardware is lost. The convenience of port mapping with Coder Connect is great—it allows me to run a local Spring Boot service on port 8080 and map it to my actual localhost without dealing with SSH tunnels or firewall rules. It just works like the app is running natively. Plus, defining the environment as code means that whenever a dependency or database version changes, I update the template, and everyone automatically gets the fix.

**What do you dislike about Coder?**

The connection stability is a weak point. Even with their peer to peer setup, the moment your internet flutters or you switch from Wi-Fi to a VPN, the remote IDE connection usually hangs or drops. Reconnecting isn't always instant, which kills your momentum when you're deep in a debugging session. For a backend dev, the actual usage is easy, but the initial platform setup is a bit of a climb. Since it’s built on Terraform, you aren't just clicking 'install' and walking away. You have to actually define your infrastructure, which means if you aren't comfortable with HCL or Kubernetes, you’re going to be staring at documentation for a while just to get a basic workspace running.

**What do you like best about Coder?**

I like Coder's capabilities around workspaces. It helps me segregate multiple customers with different workspaces and includes a lot of governance features, like connecting development environments with infrastructure without losing control. It wonderfully integrates with our AI tools and development workflows while keeping the context around infrastructure. I also find it pretty easy to set up. You just install the CLI, and it integrates straight away with Visual Studio Code, making it easy to get started.

**What do you dislike about Coder?**

I think the context awareness could be improved a little bit more. Sometimes it tends to give a lot of noises, which could be noisy for junior developers. I wish it acted more like a senior developer or coach reviewer, helping to reduce those unwanted noises.

**What do you like best about Coder?**

The biggest upsides of using Coder are improved developer productivity, stronger security, and better control over infrastructure. Because development environments can run inside a company’s own cloud or Kubernetes setup, organizations can keep their source code and data within their existing security boundaries. It also fits well with modern DevOps practices such as Infrastructure as Code, GitOps, and automated provisioning through tools like Terraform and Kubernetes.

**What do you dislike about Coder?**

One downside of Coder is that it can be more complex to set up and run than simpler cloud IDE solutions, particularly for smaller teams that don’t have strong Kubernetes or platform engineering experience. Because it’s highly customizable and infrastructure-focused, organizations may need to spend significant time configuring things like networking, authentication, workspace templates, storage, and security policies correctly.

Another challenge is the operational overhead that comes with running self-hosted development environments. Teams are responsible for maintaining the underlying infrastructure, monitoring resource usage, managing upgrades, and troubleshooting performance or reliability issues as they come up. The flexibility and control are major strengths, but they also bring additional responsibility.

For me, that translates into better collaboration, simpler environment management, and a strong fit with DevOps and GitOps workflows built around automation, Infrastructure as Code, and scalable cloud-native platforms.

I am using Coder for developing things, and I love that you can start coding in minutes. Coder provides cloud infrastructure that helps us develop without installing everything on our local machine. Its strong security is another aspect I appreciate, and it's great for teamwork. Initial setup is very easy and hardly takes 5 minutes, and there are a lot of things we can do using Coder.

I am not really satisfied with the cost transparency of Coder, and I feel the UI/UX could be more polished.

I like that Coder is open-source and supports the use of Terraform, which we use in the company as the main tool for infrastructure as code (IaC). This allows us to configure certain components, such as envbuilder, and adapt the Coder server to our needs.

I needed special settings to work with the DBMS issue 11987. When we launched Coder, there were many problems with envbuilder, and it caused inconvenience.

Top upsides of coder:
1. Easiest onboarding : I was able to start immediately.
2. Consistent environments 
3. Cloud-agnostic : Easily worked on a projects both self hosted and cloud ones for client.
Reproducible , up to date works automatically.

**What do you dislike about Coder?**

Honestly? A few things that felt a bit rough during my review:

- The "simple" local install is great, but once you need anything beyond that (K8s, HA, external DB), the setup jumps in complexity pretty fast. If your team isn't already comfortable with Terraform or Postgres, there's a learning cliff, not just a curve.

- On Apple Silicon, you *have* to bring your own PostgreSQL. Not a dealbreaker, but it's an extra step the docs don't smooth over, and it breaks the otherwise nice "one command" flow.

- Since it's self-hosted, you're owning the upkeep—upgrades, monitoring, backups. That's fine if you have platform bandwidth, but it's easy to underestimate that operational tax when you're just evaluating the dev experience.

- Debugging a workspace that won't start can feel abstracted. You're troubleshooting infra + app + network layers, and the error messages aren't always beginner-friendly.

- Premium features like SSO and workspace proxies are gated. Totally understandable, but if you're evaluating for a security-conscious org, the open-core model means the "real" enterprise readiness isn't in the free tier.

Nothing that makes me walk away—it's still a solid tool—but these are the friction points I'd want to budget for before committing. Hope that's the kind of candid take you were looking for.

I work primarily in AI/ML.

- Reproducibility: Pin CUDA, Python, deps in templates—no more "works on my notebook" surprises.
- GPU efficiency: Spin up GPU workspaces only when needed; share a pool instead of over-provisioning.
- Faster onboarding: New DS gets a pre-baked env with PyTorch/Jupyter/internal libs → coding same day.
- Smoother handoffs: Same template for research → training → staging cuts deployment friction.
- Data governance: Code/data stay on controlled infra; RBAC/isolation help with compliance.
- Cost clarity: Tag workspaces, auto-shutdown, right-size GPUs—easier to track spend per experiment.

Bottom line: Less time fighting environments, more time iterating on models.
