You have to read a lot to undestand what you need to do. **Recommendations to others considering Codecademy:** I would recommend the platform for those people who are looking for challenges and want to learn something new. The introductory JavaScript course doesn’t teach you how to embed a script in a webpage to add interactivity to otherwise flat, static HTML. The Java course doesn’t teach you how to compile your code in order to run it. **Recommendations to others considering Codecademy:** Codecademy Isn’t That Bad There’s a lot to like about Codecademy. They’ve introduced thousands to the fundamentals of computer science. But there’s a lot of room for improvement, too. Codecademy essentially shields you from the sticky, complicated part of programming. There’s no way around this, other than by being disciplined, and doing your own research. If you don’t know what you should be looking at, consider asking more established developers for guidance. **What problems is Codecademy solving and how is that benefiting you?** We give free courses for our employees, our benefits is that the young ones can improve in terms of programming language. ### 7. Helpful, knowledgeable and, what is the most important, active moderators are a great advantage of codecademy. They are not only eager to help other users, they are also interested in picking those few active guys and turning them into great teachers. I also like the new forum, it's a great place, it was worth waiting for months :) **What do you dislike about Codecademy?** Codecademy does not care too much about the quality of content. This is best visible in educational resources - quizzes. These materials are meant to be used in classrooms, yet they are full of misleading information (for example first-letter is a pseudo-element, not pseudo-class and should be preceded by two colons, the order of values in the shorthand border is not important etc...). Another concern is the lack of consistency with the official style guides. For example, codecademy teaches that users can use syntax ``` comment ``` in Python to make a block comment. This is not true. This syntax is used to specify a doc string, if you place this text, not as a first statement of the module, function, class or method definition it will be ignored and treated as a comment. But, teaching beginners that this is a syntax for block comment without explanation what is a doc string is just misleading, dangerous and far away from good teaching practices. I don't also like the way codecademy is dealing with the bugs. It takes them months to fix the bug even if a moderator posted ready to use patch. For few weeks I see many users with the specific problem - they are viewing the site in the foreign language and they can't change this language in the select box in the footer. It simply is not working, they have to change it inside account settings. it would be so simple to just remove this misleading input box from the footer, but obviously, codecademy staff does not have time for that. Code prepared by codecademy content team in the Make a Website Project is not consistent with good coding practices (mixing shorthand properties with specific properties, wrong values in media queries). Teaching is a great responsibility, they should care more about content. **Recommendations to others considering Codecademy:** If you think seriously about starting a programming career - buy a good book. Codecademy is best suitable if you want to scratch basics, you can learn how to write code, not how to program. If you have never seen a code and you want to explore this great field - codecademy might be the best starting point. **What problems is Codecademy solving and how is that benefiting you?** The main benefit for me is that I have met wonderful people at codecademy and they helped me find my way of life. Now I know that in some way I will be a teacher. Thanks to the users and their problems I developed a quick debugging process, so codecademy also had a positive impact on my programming, refactoring and debugging skills. ### 11. The platform gives you the chance to write code while learning concepts. Courses are very streamlined, and when you begin one, you can be confident you'll have a solid foundation of that language. **What do you dislike about Codecademy?** Some of the lessons feel like they're too slow or have redundant sections. It's frustrating to know how to program in one or more languages, and still have to wade through explanations of what a variable is in other courses. There's not really any challenge to writing the code needed to move to the next section. It's pretty much copying. The learning value of following along is still significant, but this method doesn't teach you to solve problems. Thus, it's really better for learning new languages instead of learning programming. I can't tell how much the "Pro" version costs. The site says $20/month, but I've looked around and have seen some say that is the introductory price and it goes as high as $60/month. Some have said it's $10/month. That's deterred me from actually getting the subscription, not being able to tell if they'll jack up the prices after a few months. **Recommendations to others considering Codecademy:** Try and figure out how much the real cost of the pro subscription is before signing up. **What problems is Codecademy solving and how is that benefiting you?** I've learned Ruby and jQuery. I'm experienced in Java and Python, so I just needed a streamlined way to pick up these other languages. This has worked to make the basics more ingrained, as compared to something like learn-x-in-y-minutes. I'm comfortable programming in both new languages now. ### 12.
