I first used it with HNTB in doing bridge design for 3 bridges in Massachusetts in a contract/temp. position. I loved it and it was definitely a challenge for me at the time. I later used it with Golder Associates both with bridge design and landfill comparisons between each quarter of the year. This was more advanced for me as I used more of the 3D features. It was fun. **What do you dislike about Civil 3D?** I don't really have a lot of complaints about Civil 3D or using it. I enjoyed using it and would like to do so again in the future. It was a lot to learn but, I like to learn. **What problems is Civil 3D solving and how is that benefiting you?** I used it in doing land comparisons of land fills, bridge design, grading of a site that was being filled in and grading and re-design of the land roads of a construction site as the job was being done. ### 2. Generates excellent work product. Facilitates detail orientation. The aesthetics of the program layout are also a bonus. The ability to use the program for various utilities applications is also beneficial as is its integration with other programs like StormCAD. **What do you dislike about Civil 3D?** The vast number of available tools and function make it difficult to use at times, I've been using it for over a year now and I'm still discovering new functionalities. Can be confusing to differentiate certain features. Because of how powerful the tool is and how much is loaded into the program. The more data you import and create in the CAD file, the slower the application runs - this can occasionally lead to crashing. **Recommendations to others considering Civil 3D:** I would highly recommend using Civil 3D, it has reduced time spent on grading and layout and increased end work product. It also greatly reduces time spent generating profiles. **What problems is Civil 3D solving and how is that benefiting you?** Consistent site grading and dynamic grading have been a huge value add from using Civil 3D - this has also been a time saver. Civil 3D has also expedited the process of generating profiles which many towns, municipalities, and clients we work with require. ### 3. Revisions are made quick, easy and efficiently. Creating a surface is made with less that a few click of the mouse from the toolspace, which contains all the neccessary tools and command settings. Once yor surface is made, now you can open up to new designs. Examples like changing an alignment of a road, storm structure or any other alignment allows the profile to change along with the modifications made. If you have structures, corridors and labels associated they too will be adjusted as well. If you are looking for a great efficient, effective and essential software for surveying and/or engineering, this is the one for you. **What do you dislike about Civil 3D?** Unfortunately there are no such thing as a perfect tool/software and there are some down sides. The complexity of the software, things get embedded deep and are sometimes hard to find or remember where to find them for customization. Preferences there will always be, so if you are looking for a specific style or setup, I would suggest hiring an expert or get additional training in customizing. **Recommendations to others considering Civil 3D:** Like anything new or different there is a learning curve, so I would recommend training or training software, find as many support groups. Especially sign up with Lynn Allen's blog, she is the AutoCAD Guru. There are new updated how tos on YouTube also. **What problems is Civil 3D solving and how is that benefiting you?** You have always heard the phrase, "Time is Money" and that is so true to any and all businesses. So, this is the effectiveness and more efficiently building and creation of the dynamics of AutoCAD Civil 3D objects. You are able to achieve the surveying/ engineering plans within half the time it take just using any old 2D CAD software. AutoCAD has made my life less stressful and more effective with great advancements in my career. Now that I'm back in civil design, I found new purpose for Civil 3D in the scanning field of point clouding. ### 4. An application based on digital design with multiple precise tools. **Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Ahmed E. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.) **Reviewed Date:** December 09, 2020 **What do you like best about Civil 3D?** I like this software as it has strong and stable integrations with BIM, which means that we can do a full job on design methods, drafting and construction documentation, as it allows us to improve every aspect of these terms on a large scale. , determining that the projects executed through this system are fully guaranteed, due to the intelligent programming that the application acquires, highlighting that one of the characteristics that I love the most about Civil 3D is that it replaces the parts of the Pipes is totally easy, since it analyzes a flow by gravity and recommends the size by demand and consequence, being one of my favorite systems in these aspects, developers in complete buildings. **What do you dislike about Civil 3D?** When we use this software with the integrations that it supports for a solid platform in development, it presents us with errors with system functions, since it is equally complicated, since it does not offer tutorials in these areas of high determination, being a total challenge for the Engineers and experts in the field develop a more advanced prototype in technology that requires these options obligatorily, resulting in a mishap that requires immediate configurations. **Recommendations to others considering Civil 3D:** Civil 3D shows a digitized model based on 3D visualizations to discard the smallest detail of an entire structure, regardless of its size, it is very useful for any organization with areas dedicated especially to professional engineers in the field of optimal design, Because all the system's functionalities are parametric, since its parameters can be edited to associate them with different alignments, because in other more direct points, it should be noted that its use options are programmed to design immense buildings, with aspects fully detailed in each sense, to guarantee a work with complex areas in the course of its development. **What problems is Civil 3D solving and how is that benefiting you?** We use this software for the optimal and advanced design of pipelines and complex structuring, or it can also be said that we use it mainly for a geotechnical model, due to its high definition of the large proportion of the works that are carried out through of this application, since the tasks that are used with Civil 3D require extreme patience, precision and a lot of time to develop a model in its entirety, but we managed to acquire all the necessary and strategic points, to establish and start the production of a prototype digitized in particular. ### 5. Ability to use the all familiar AutoCAD tools, as well as LISP and SCR to automate some processes is one of the greatest advantages of the software. **What do you dislike about Civil 3D?** Sometimes working with large survey data can be "hardware resource" hungry, This has been a problem since conceiving of Civil 3D back in 2005, If this can be improved it will be the best tool around for Terrains design. If the Multicore environment can be utilized in Civil 3D I suppose it will improve the performance, I am aware about Autocad and Single core utilization reasoning, but if Autodesk can somehow prop up that it will be great.. **Recommendations to others considering Civil 3D:** If you need comprehensive tool for Earthworks, Terrain, Roads Stormwater channels and infrastructure Sewer and Potable water, as well as town planning All in one tool, That's Civil3D for you.. Is quite a learning curve in the beginning, but for anyone with the familiar Autocad knowledge and interface is much easier to lean. For water resources engineers, the ability to build distribution systems in 3D with seamless export/import to SSA has been very useful. The integration between RECAP and C3D has also improved workflow between surveyors, drone operators, and engineers. **What do you dislike about Civil 3D?** The software is still very resource intensive on the machines and often crashes when too much data is being shown. Though significant improvements have been made in other Autodesk softwares like Revit, older applications like AutoCAD and C3D seem to be stuck on old, inefficient source codes. **What problems is Civil 3D solving and how is that benefiting you?** C3D bridges the gap between traditional 2D drawings and BIM. Though there are still significant advances that are needed in C3D to truly become BIM, it serves as a intermediary step to BIM for engineers who have worked in 2D. ### 9. I like that I can rely on the drawings to be precise and accurate when drawing via calculations instead of introducing human error by trying to "eye ball" it. I like that you can turn on and off layers and alter the color so you can tell them apart. **What do you dislike about Civil 3D?** Easy to get lost when zooming in and out. Easy to loose track of when I've clicked and when I started or ended a command. Easy to enter commands in over and over because I didn't noticed if I keyed the sequence correctly or activated the command. I have been having trouble remember all of the commands needed when I simply want to add a line or turn off certain layers. **Recommendations to others considering Civil 3D:** My advice is to go in expecting there to be a curve and difficult or frustrating to interact with at first. Can be tedious to use at times, but that can be attested to the nature of the work I was doing, but overall a great set of software once you are comfortable using it and have memorized some commands. I haven't gotten to the point where I've memorized commands, so I get caught up on that part. **What problems is Civil 3D solving and how is that benefiting you?** Precise measurements of parcel boundaries, aligning boundaries. Cases like these can happen where people might have to work on a different desktop and has newer version or vice versa. **Recommendations to others considering Civil 3D:** A must have software for any firm/independent engineer to use in CAD applications. Workflow and productivity hands down more efficient than handdrawn plans in modern society **What problems is Civil 3D solving and how is that benefiting you?** Grading, Drainage, surface analysis. The 3d elements added to the AutoCAD core is very accurate for a digital render of surfaces created via feature lines and its parameters. This allows engineers to analyze surface drainage and avoid ponding possibilities when designing a site. Other features that are very helpful are the pipe networks and the creation of plan and profile to visually see what is going on vs existing and proposed to help aid in Construct-ability. ### 12. Once you learn the commands you use most often, you can quickly type the first few letters of the command, enter, and immediately begin the command. This makes for much quicker drafting than finding the correct button in a drop down menu somewhere. Though, that is an option also. This feature also frees up screen "real estate," which makes for a simpler, cleaner, more efficient drafting process. Hitting the escape key will consistently quit a command. The add-ins (specifically storm and sanitary) are extremely helpful, and make it easy to quickly add pipe networks to plan sets, as well. Being able to create 3D blocks and explode features are also top-notch features that drafters and engineers will both appreciate. **What do you dislike about Civil 3D?** This is not easily compatible with Bentley products like microstation or axiom. The drawings do not save automatically upon closing. Cutting and updating pipe profiles is needlessly complicated. Also, there are more options than necessary for styles, which leads to more confusion than clarity. Lastly, it can take a fair amount of time to get familiar with the program. I was in it every day for 6 months before I felt comfortable. **Recommendations to others considering Civil 3D:** It will take users with no background 3-6 months to learn how to use Civil 3D well. Anyone currently using Microstation or similar products should be able to pick it up very quickly-in just a few weeks. **What problems is Civil 3D solving and how is that benefiting you?** It is very quick and easy to lay out pipe networks using civil 3D. The drafting process is much faster thanks to short key commands. And blocks can be saved and used in multiple drawings. ### 13. Grading is my favorite part of the design, and Civil 3D makes it so much easier. I am able to mass grade a large site in just a few short hours, but the program also allows for finite design with accuracy at fraction of an inch. The automatic labeling allows us to translate our model into a readable format, with them updating to reflect changes in our model. **What do you dislike about Civil 3D?** Certain features of the software have yet to be fully designed and user friendly. The pressure pipe networks in particular are still difficult to work with and can be quite tempermental. The way we are approaching design in my firm is to model site in a similar way to highway design. Unfortunately, a lot of the features were not originally designed for this approach and I struggle to manipulate them to do what I want. **What problems is Civil 3D solving and how is that benefiting you?** The benefits for Civil 3D are quite endless. They simplify our design, and allow for quick revisions and changes to be done. I can remove and add entities to our surface with ease. Problem solving is always necessary as it seems we are always pressing the boundaries with new ways to design. When breaking boundaries and developing creative solutions, the software development does not always match. Therefore, problem solving to use the tools available in new and creative ways too is required to model our innovative designs. ### 15. For example I have used the River Flood Analysis tool to determine water levels in a river survey to design the best outfall location for a treatment plant. It amazes me the amount of things we can do. **What do you dislike about Civil 3D?** For me, being a newer user of the project, I often find myself stuck in what I am working on. When I receive help the problem usually lies in a specific setting I forgot to check (or didn't know I needed to check). **Recommendations to others considering Civil 3D:** Really good and powerful program but if you don't know specific details about functions and processes it can be hard to troubleshoot your problems. **What problems is Civil 3D solving and how is that benefiting you?** It has been amazing learning all that can be done with this program. I have utilized it basemapping of project sites, grading in proposed ground slopes and lagoons, creating sheet sets to better organize the project we're working on, and a lot more. ### 16. There are seemingly infinite ways to customize and use the tools any way you need to. The user interface may change with versions, but the capability remains to work the way you're used to and add in the new tools. **What do you dislike about Civil 3D?** The process of creating corridors to model all aspects of a project can be quite tedious and cumbersome. The software can do whatever you want it to, but it can take a significant amount of time. There are many ways to accomplish a single task, but creating corridors doesn't seem to have a quick answer. **What problems is Civil 3D solving and how is that benefiting you?** The program allows for customization to tailor the workflow to our clients. A significant amount of our work is for one client, so the files tend to look the same and are able to be made into templates to maintain common workflows. The CAD Standards tools help to make sure the standards are followed for our client. The LISP routines and plug-ins help automate some of those common workflows as well. ### 17. I think the program works well for our intended use for it (utility mapping and imagery based 2D modeling) and has a lot of functions and commands that make the drafting process streamlined and easy. **What do you dislike about Civil 3D?** The program comes standard with Bing imagery built in for mapping, which is often outdated or blurry in many of the areas where we do our work. This can make accurate, detailed drawings difficult to create or manage without importing imagery from an outside source. **What problems is Civil 3D solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use this program to draft routes for the installation of fiber optic networks, which is creating faster connections and internet speeds for people all over. If I build a great surface in Civil 3D, Why cant I take it into Revit as it is? I always have to rebuild or find work arounds to get back to the same basic story.
