**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Gabriel T. | Gabriel Torrecilla, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 30, 2019

**What do you like best about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

This new generation firewall, has 2 main upgrades if we compare de Cisco Firepower against the Cisco ASA

First: More Capacity about sessions and a improven posibility of creation of new sessions. The Firepower can duplicate or triplicate this aspect if we compre to the ASA. This is very useful if you are an ISP and you have a DNS Cache. This can help you if you have any incident in your DNS or in the master server that you use.
2nd. The integration of the firewall services with online services as umbrella, and automatically signature updates for services like DDos, and protection against malwares. Almost that Firepower support aplication visibility and control if it's required, and URL blocking.

Cisco have included this very important option in their firewall, you have

**What do you dislike about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

Really there isn't any particular factor that i dislike.
But in this product, is very important to have the support up to date, so you can access to the updated security signatures list.
Like all of Cisco ASA, some stuff ir really hard to do in the CLI, it's like Cisco want us to use the web app. In ASA was a little hard, in Firepower you have to do via http.

**What problems is Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We're an ISP, with firepower we solve the problem of opened sessions due to DNS failures. In particular events like a problem of facebook or a problem in our DNS, we've reached the 750k of opened sessions and the ASA is seriosly affected and drops all new sessions.
Almost that we use the Firewall for IPsec tunnels for all the country.

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Libraries | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 06, 2018

**What do you like best about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

Its simple and easy to use, lots of clear tabs - which shows each setting and guides show each steps and command line configuration which was really nice if you do not have access to asdm.

**What do you dislike about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

Firepower module why it was so hard to build it earlier and integrate more - very poor performance of IPS access has to be limited as it cannot handle all traffic and memory is overloaded thenks to which firewalls fail over. I hope that future releses fix this. Also Firepower is very limited they just started adding features which in other firewalls are for months or years now.

**Recommendations to others considering Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv):**

Try other vendors which as today its much easier set up if you require IPS/URL filtering and monitoring

**What problems is Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Security and filtering, it nice to add all features and firepower licenses but the throughput of firewall then is not so great... and here you have to limit what is being filtered or not or you will end up with large bottleneck which will be your firewall.

**What do you dislike about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

Not really Cisco's fault but The Cisco Adaptive Security Device manager can be a pain but this is because it uses Java and I have heard rumors that this is going away.

I started using Cisco firewalls long ago when PIX501 was in place. What I like is how it was developing for a ling time. Now all network features are nearly complete.

**What do you dislike about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

Sometimes there're stability issues with newest versions.

  ### 36. Cisco Firewalls bring next-gen solutions to right now threats

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed Date:** January 31, 2018

**What do you like best about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

I like the cisco Firepower software suite that works with the ASA we have. This software really give a good gui representation of your security controls and the reporting is excellent. IDS and IPS are built in as well.

**What do you dislike about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

Like with all cisco, it is difficult to learn the software.

**Recommendations to others considering Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv):**

Definitely worth the investment

**What problems is Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are a highly regulated financial institution and we need to keep evolving our Security fingerprint to accommodate with the growing threats of the digital world.

  ### 37. Cisco ASA

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Architecture & Planning | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 11, 2017

**What do you like best about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

Fairly solid product. Widespread use so there is a lot of documentation available. Able to privde Malware protection, VPN service and Firewall on the same box.

**What do you dislike about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

It uses Java for its GUI. Product line is a bit slow to adapt new technologies. Code has become a bit buggier over the years.

**Recommendations to others considering Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv):**

Do your homework. When I was deploying my ASA's there was not much choice for L7 firewalls designed for the midsize market. The ASA is a good firewall, although a bit over priced as are all Cisco products.

**What problems is Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Basic firewalling. We also use anyconnect VPN on the device. VPN use is much better than our previous web based VPN. We were able to add the Firesight module to the device to provide better security at the application layer.

**What do you like best about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

Configuration in CLI is still old PIX CLI with some new changes... Configuration and debug are in "Cisco" style - solid and good known...

**What do you dislike about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

Evolve... PIX/ASA is 5 years in the past. Competition offers more. But if you want just configure access out or in and you have few branches you want to connect to your network via IPSec, this the best solution...

**What problems is Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Missing antivir, antispam, uselles web management... Easy configuration and troubleshooting wia CLI.

**What do you like best about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

Very consistent look and feel across all versions

**What do you dislike about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

Behind the times as a next generation firewall.

**Recommendations to others considering Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv):**

I would highly recommend looking at other vendors like Palo Alto

**What problems is Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Not as good as Palo alto firewalls. Lacking in deep packet inspection and analytics.

  ### 42. Cisco is filling the gap on NGFW

  ### 43. A workhorse firewall with a long legacy

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Richard B. | Professional Services Engineer, Computer & Network Security, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 26, 2017

**What do you like best about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

I went to school for networking, and my curriculum was very heavy on cisco routers and switches. The fact that they use the same (or similar) syntax in the firewalls allows for a those with cisco router and switch experience to transition easily. However, what I like most about the product is the simple command line configuration that I can script ahead of time. Other firewalls such as fortinet or palo alto are a pain to configure from the command line.

**What do you dislike about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

I dislike the lack of troubleshooting capabilities for routing. On a cisco router you can do "sh ip route <address>" and see the exact route that the address is taking. On the cisco pix and ASA you have to do sh route | include <address> and hack off octets until you find one that MIGHT match.

**Recommendations to others considering Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv):**

If you have a strong background in cisco devices, Cisco Firewalls are the way to go. However, if you are looking for something that performs excellent layer 7 firewalling, I'd suggest a Palo Alto over any of the cisco layer 7 firewalls.

**What problems is Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

As an MSSP, our customers prefer Cisco firewalls because of their long legacy as a stable and capable firewall platform.

  ### 44. Cisco ASA

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Alfred T. | Sr. Network Engineer, Information Technology and Services, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 17, 2017

**What do you like best about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

The Cisco ASA series FW is quite versatile and supports a plethora of features that's suitable for small to very large deployments. I particularily like the ability to deploy SSLVPN termination on the same FW device.

The GUI wizards are definately quite useful for the beginner as jumping into the CLI to implement IPSEC VPN tunnels could be challening for few.

I also quite enjoy the debugging capabilities any Cisco device has as you should be able to troubleshoot majority of the problems from the debug logs.

The ASA platform has recently incorporated Snort capabilities and Firepower. I look forward to using that a good threat defense.

**What do you dislike about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

The JAVA ASDM GUI is one of it's major weakness. Nobody runs java apps anymore, yet their main GUI management is still stuck on that platform. The main interface also has not improved much since the beginning.

**Recommendations to others considering Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv):**

You can start off using the ASA by configuring it in ASDM. However I would recommend learning to use the CLI interface in order to know the ins and outs of the device. Use the ASDM only as a supplementary to make quick changes.

**What problems is Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The Cisco ASA serves as a main access filter from the internet as well as IPSec and SSLVPN termination.

  ### 45. Cisco ASA5525 firewall and IPS

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dale C. | Network Administrator, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 29, 2016

**What do you like best about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

More functions than I can use but fairly simple to maintain, manage and monitor external traffic. We also use the Intrusion Prevention module. Both provide very granular configuration. We did get a 3rd party partner to do the initial install which I recommend.

We have blocked many threats and had were able to verify our internal data assets were safe.

**What do you dislike about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

Not really a dislike but it is a complicated system which makes sense for the amount of control provided over internet traffic monitoring and filtering.

Unless you know the system well, I strongly recommend help with the initial install as incorrect settings can either shut you down or leave you open to threats.

**Recommendations to others considering Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv):**

Cisco is not the cheapest solution but is a solid vendor with a long history in this area. They have a broad range of network products and can work with you for a solution to issues 24/7.

Definitely a case of getting what you pay for with this product. It is rock solid and secure

**What problems is Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Foremost securing our internal systems from outside threats is the primary reason for the firewall. Cisco is well established so we have a resource for support and know they will be around for the long run. Having Cisco network equipment internally helps with one platform/vendor for support.

We are able to protect our data and know of attacks. Monitoring also gives us the ability to look for other issues with traffic. We use Cisco Anyconnect VPN which integrates easily with the ASA5525

  ### 46. A Solid Solution

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Donald S. | Director of Technology Services, Farming, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 22, 2016

**What do you like best about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

Cisco has been in the security arena for a long time, and continue to improve and perfect their firewalls since their early PIX days. Their VPNs are rock solid and easy to manage. They have 24/7/365 support that can be extremely helpful if you escalate properly. The introduction of the FirePower platform only makes the solution better with much improved IDS/IPS capabilities.

**What do you dislike about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

The add-on software features tended to be much less stellar that the firewall platform itself. I've had varied results in running any of their add-on modules and tend to use the firewall as a firewall, and not a multi-purpose device.

**Recommendations to others considering Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv):**

Though the platform is changing, I still view the ASA as an extremely solid and reliable firewall and not a multi-purpose device. In my opinion, I believe that it's one of the best pure firewalls on the market, though if you're looking for an all-in-one security device for a small or medium business, you may want to compare it to other options.

**What problems is Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The goal of our most recent implementation of our ASA with FirePower services was to upgrade an aging ASA unit that provided network security and VPN access. The transition to the new firewall wasn't a huge learning curve in regard to support. There wasn't a huge boost in features with this implementation, though we're reaping some of the benefits in increased threat protection.

  ### 47. Cisco is Cisco

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Richard M. | Network Services Engineer, Information Technology and Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 31, 2017

**What do you like best about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

Pretty much the industry standard. Always adding features prices have come down.

**What do you dislike about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

Very difficult to get them setup if you don't know what you are doing.

**Recommendations to others considering Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv):**

If you don't need a Cisco only feature, look around at other options.

**What problems is Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

You can get a product that does just as good and easier to get setup for a lot less.

  ### 48. Easy to use!

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Research | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 14, 2017

**What do you like best about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

I recently started using this. What I like best is that it works decently even at low internet speeds.

**What do you dislike about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

I use it regularly and its been very smooth so far. No reason to dislike anything so far.

**What problems is Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Access documents on the university server remotely. It give me more mobility to work.

  ### 49. Solid product, cumbersome interface

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 25, 2016

**What do you like best about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

Robust hardware. Best in business warranty and support (with smartnet).

**What do you dislike about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

Not coming from a cisco background and having to learn the ASDM interface. I've found it a little challenging and cumbersome at times. Had an issue a few months back where the primary/secondary units were not syncing correctly and it took Cisco support a few weeks to get the issue resolved (it ended up being a bug in the version we were running). I feel like the IDS interface could use a makeover.

**Recommendations to others considering Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv):**

The newer Cisco firewalls with sourcefire are the best in the industry. The firewalls we are using (ASA-5510) are great hardware with some reservations on the GUI.

**What problems is Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We keep firewalls extremely locked down to keep us safe from the outside as much as possible (which poses some other issues). For our needs the firewalls are rock solid and require very little maintenance other than software upgrades.

  ### 50. Our Company's Experience with Cisco ASA

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nikki R. | Tutor, Health, Wellness and Fitness, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 19, 2016

**What do you like best about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

I work at a hospital and our patient information obviously needs to be very secure. Cisco ASA has given our company the ability to use a multitude of devices to access patient information without fear of our information being accessed by others. The support team is absolutely amazing as well which is great, as we are not a tech company.

**What do you dislike about Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv)?**

As with many types of software, the disadvantage is the price. Fortunately, we are a large hospital and it is very important for our system to be secure, so Cisco ASA is worth it for us.

**Recommendations to others considering Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv):**

This software is great if you need a secure firewall that operates on a multitude of devices. One thing to keep in mind is the price, as it is probably better suited to large companies.

**What problems is Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Virtual (formerly NGFWv) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are solving the constantly-evolving problem of keeping patient information secure while still allowing individuals within the hospital to access this information as it is required for patient care. Currently, healthcare workers access patient files from desktops, laptops, and iPads, and Cisco ASA has worked perfectly on all of them.
