The threat intelligence isn’t handled by the firewall itself; it relies on a separate Cisco virtual appliance, FirePOWER. That appliance has to be hosted on our infrastructure, provisioned with the necessary resources, configured, and then linked to the ASA, which can be a tedious process. From all the firewalls we have worked with, the Cisco ASA 5500-X Series is the most reliable one. Management can be done via both command line and GUI. High availability is on of the strong points. Managing the ASA 5500-X Series via GUI can be a bit confusing if you also use command line for management. Too many object-groups are automatically created. If you only stick to the management via GUI this is just fine. If you want to do both then this is getting confusing. Cisco ASA's are not an old generation of firewalls though but they still are best to provide the first level of security at OSI Layer 3 and 4. The deployment is easy and due to their light hardware requirements, they are easy to implement in a quick time.

Customer support is quick and reliable considering their experience in the product area.

The zone based feature was first of its kind when it was launched into the market.

I have worked with the Cisco ASA 4k and 5k series. The Cisco ASA 5k series is a very good VPN product that can support a high number of users and remains very stable.

Overall, the product is reliable and handles high throughput well. We don’t see fluctuations or sudden spikes in CPU or memory usage.

When it comes to a new setup, we always run into issues with the ASA and Firepower combination. The NGFW features are not that great compared to other vendors. Most of the 5k series is end of life, and we are migrating to the 4215.

Cisco needs to come up with a single setup approach, like Firepower managed by FMC, instead of having to deal with ASA through ASDM and the CLI.

What I like most about the Cisco ASA 5500-X Series is its reliability and stability. Once it’s up and configured, it just works. We’ve been using it across several locations and it’s consistently handled traffic and security policies without issues. The main downside is the learning curve when it comes to configuration, especially if you’re not familiar with Cisco’s CLI or ASDM interface. Some of the documentation could be clearer too.
