A lot to offer, ready-to-start, really good solution for those who need agility and a lot to explore. You can use any kind of OS (like linux, windows or MacOS), you can use manual approval to deploy your stuff, you can integrate with a lot of platforms that use code analytics, you can integrate with GitHub for the best experience (and then you can put all your testing on the CircleCI, so every push/pull request will start a new job to check if your code is great). The best one! **What problems is CircleCI solving and how is that benefiting you?** We're using to automate the unit testing of our softwares, doing online End-2-End testing, making deploys to AWS, using with SonarQube. Basically, CircleCI is the hub that connect our software with the entire world. ### 4. After that It just runs and reports back to us via github seamlessly. It was very easy to write a config file and once it is in the repo it just works every time. The only tricky part was setting up custom env variables in the build... but even that was not hard **What do you dislike about CircleCI?** From time to time there are hiccups where Circle processes will just crash and run out of memory. It gives us the false impression that something we did went wrong, but a restart is all we need to do. **Recommendations to others considering CircleCI:** Make sure you have a bit of time to tweak the config. It is not complex. I remember when I first joined my current company I was so tensed by listening to complex words like continuous integration/continuous deployment but 1 week down the line I myself insisted my architect to integrate circle ci in our new project. Circle Ci truly has a plethora of features to choose from **What do you dislike about CircleCI?** There is no particular thing which I dislike but if I am forced to choose then I will say the UI. CircleCI gives us more faith that the updates that we push out our customers will be functioning correctly. The UI is easy to use, and the integration with GitHub makes it simple to address problems that do arise. **What do you dislike about CircleCI?** At times, CircleCI can be annoying, but only because it is forcing us to do the work that we don't want to do but really should be. Flaky tests can kill deployments, but at the end of the day this pushes us to fix our flaky tests which is really a good thing. **Recommendations to others considering CircleCI:** I would definitely recommend CircleCI for Agile teams or teams that like to deploy quickly. Even with multiple projects and organizations in play, you can get to what you want without too much hassle. The configuration is a bit complex, but it is very well documented. Getting started initially is fully documented no matter where you start. It works with bitbucket and github and probably gitlab too. Debugging why a job or workflow failed is straightforward thanks to the information provided. **What do you dislike about CircleCI?** The configuration is very complex and can be a rabbit hole in some projects. It would also be nice if there docker images available was more clearly documented. **Recommendations to others considering CircleCI:** If you are already using Github or another tool and you want to get into automating builds and deployments, this is the way to go. Getting started is quick and very well-documented. It is also possible to integrate with Slack and other software to provide other notification about build status. **What problems is CircleCI solving and how is that benefiting you?** We use it for automating production builds of client sites, testing and linting of development code, automated deployment process. It helps to make sure that everything is consistent and ready for deployment. We save time that we can spend elsewhere on the project without worrying about tending to circle. It is built with a yaml file such that developers can add or change the build process without an comprehensive administrative CircleCI access. **What do you dislike about CircleCI?** The interface is often a bit complicated, as can be expected from any extremely configurable operation. But there are some tutorials available so you won't have to update the file again for a while after a file has already been setup. **Recommendations to others considering CircleCI:** It sure you have enough time to change the setup. We build and deploy to AWS when the creator merges to master. We saw comparable costs to operate our own Jenkins case, but we had much less operational problems with CircleCI. I remember our company had a free trial for one or two weeks. Better dashboard design 2. I don't like how the workflow tab is organized I can't find my branches easily 3. Also, may be we can have more insights charts specific to some actions like how many builds failed because of failure in testing (not in building for example) or how was the unit testing coverage for the past month and if it was increasing or not? ... etc. 4. I need to have circle ci mobile app (I am always working on the go / car and I need to access my reports faster) **Recommendations to others considering CircleCI:** If you need to automate your builds and having continuous integration / continuous delivery in your project which is a best practice .. Through a simple configuration file, a vast array of jobs can be run. Whether it be unit tests or build processes, all can be configured through a simple file. **What do you dislike about CircleCI?** CircleCI does not automatically refresh the state of jobs being run which can be an annoyance when jobs run quickly and as a developer I expect live updates. The integration with Github worked well -- most everything just seemed to work right away. The documentation is much better than most tools out there and the sales/product engineers have been great to talk to as we were ramping up our integration. **What do you dislike about CircleCI?** There isn't an easy way to manually trigger a job apart from opening a pull request. Not having dynamic workflows means you need to do a bunch of conditional logic in bash to skip parts of your workflow that depend on state. **What problems is CircleCI solving and how is that benefiting you?** Standard CI in which we run tests when a new pull request is opened. When the developer merges to master, we build and deploy to AWS. We've seen similar costs to running our own Jenkins instance but have experienced far fewer operational issues with CircleCI. I like that I can click in Github and then it wil lautomatically bring me to Circler CI and there I can see what the error is although sometimes it is hard to scroll to find the error I am looking for. I have no strong feelins on the old vs the new interface, they are both alright if you ask me **What do you dislike about CircleCI?** some menu options are confusing, especially when deploying and trying to find it under workflow vs. jobs. I often have to search for where something I just deployed it running, and once or twice thought it did not run when it did because I was looking in the wrong place. The service is easy to administer and integrate with our tooling. During development, we get immediate feedback as to the health of the build, and whether a pull request is ready to merge into master. The service's interface makes it easy to view the build history across branches. **What do you dislike about CircleCI?** There's not much to dislike. The platform continues to evolve and is sufficiently flexible. It does require adding another asset in the form of a YAML file, and you are introducing yet another vendor dependency into your software delivery pipeline. **What problems is CircleCI solving and how is that benefiting you?** Developing and deploying quality software relies on build automation and low-friction for testing. The platform has good integration with github which makes deploying code a lot nicer than in the past. Working with teams has also felt considerably easier coming from other platforms. **What do you dislike about CircleCI?** There are a few things I don't like very much, I feel that environment variables are sometimes hard to access in the ci scripts. And I can login to the build job container using SSH, this is a big advantage than Jenkins. I also manages Jenkins cluster. With Jenkins, users want us to install plugins they want to use. CircleCI uses containers to build each jobs so users can install any dependencies of their application even if it is a system components like glibc. Also, other users using CircleCI can login to their job. This means the user can do trouble shooting by their selves. We use CircleCI for everything from application code CI/CD to deployment of our infrastructure via Terraform, to pushing Kubernetes manifests for K8s resources. The integration with GitHub is nice, and the support for GitHub releases is a very nice feature. I think the real power of CircleCI is that application teams are able to completely own their own pipelines. By storing configuration along with the application code developers are able to own their pathway to production using reproducible configuration. **What do you dislike about CircleCI?** We use CircleCI Server running in AWS. I think the biggest problem we have is that the server version is quite far behind in feature set compared to the SaaS version. With no support for version 2.1 configuration, and by extension features such as parameterised commands and jobs, and orbs. This is really disappointing, because it makes it hard to utilise CircleCI to its full extent. The other primary issues we have with CircleCI are: - The interface is seriously lacking. The workflow view doesn't scale well with large workflows, making it annoying to use when a pipeline has more than half a dozen sequential jobs. - The API is poor. It has limited support for programmatically managing workflow operation, and generally displays rather poor design. Not supporting the ability to retrieve a specific number of objects (e.g. "Return me the first 55 projects that I don't follow"), inconsistencies with returned fields (e.g. Followed projects from the /projects endpoint return "reponame" and "followed" fields, whereas /user/repos returns "name" and "following" fields.), inconsistent use of pagination, etc. - Configuration in a single file. This can be worked around by using the CircleCI CLI with the `config pack` command, but it would be nice to see support for spreading config across multiple files without having to include this additional, manual, step. - Can't reference configuration within another repo (see ConcourseCI). It would be nice if we could have a repo dedicated to small, reusable CircleCI config files that can simply be referenced via the GitHub URL (with support for parameters). I know Orbs is meant to solve this issue, but right now server users don't have access to the orbs feature, and there is no support for private orbs. - Triggers are rather arbitrary. Currently the only way to kick off a workflow is either manually, or via a PR/commit. Additional triggers, such as "PR merged" would be very useful, as this would allow us to more easily spin up and destroy PR specific temp environments. - Can't default the resource class across all jobs in CircleCI Server. - Can't trigger a job on the condition that a previous job failed (this would be useful for cleanup scenarios, such as a terraform apply failing halfway through applying). - Can't run CircleCI Server on Kubernetes, have to use Nomad. This means we have to manage a separate orchestration cluster for CircleCI, rather than being able to utilise our Kubernetes expertise. - Metrics are kinda garbage on CircleCI Server. No obvious way for gathering metrics of remote docker instances. Metrics have to be gathered mostly from Nomad, rather than CircleCI providing these metrics (e.g. Deployment metrics, build metrics like build times/job times, etc). **Recommendations to others considering CircleCI:** Only use CircleCI Server if you really have to as it takes key features from the product. **What problems is CircleCI solving and how is that benefiting you?** - Kubernetes resource deployments (e.g. control-plane, operators, etc.) - Application releases via Helm. - Terraform automation. - Cron style task that run on schedule. ### 39.
