I shall confess that the integration server is fast. It was built to speed up releases. Parallelism support: I also love the CIrcleCI CLI which gives the ability to split the execution of automated tests between multiple containers. This is a game-changer. The tools can split the tests intelligently, based on historical completion time data. The "Insights" section in a CircleCI workflow is remarkable. It provides robust data to help understand quickly why, how, and when tests are failing. Finally, I am grateful for the CircleCI support team. The support engineers are quick to answer and super friendly. **What do you dislike about CircleCI?** I have not seen the ability to add variables to a manually triggered workflow, which can be helpful when a user triggers it in the UI. It is something that is supported in GitLab CI. **What problems is CircleCI solving and how is that benefiting you?** It runs a very large set of UI automated regression tests headlessly on a schedule (nightly). I come to work in the morning and I have a report sent from CircleCI via the Slack integration. That process is completely automated, removing all manual efforts. I can run my tests in the same environment day after day and trust the results. The parallelism capability in CircleCI means that I can run the tests in a fraction of the time, by splitting their execution between multiple nodes. ### 6. At our place, we use it for builds on every commit push and deploy jobs to different envs. It's fairly simple, has slack and github integration, setup is easy (way easier than Jenkins at least) **What do you dislike about CircleCI?** Sometimes there's a timeout or page doesn't refresh telling you the status of a build. Apart from that, not many issues. **What problems is CircleCI solving and how is that benefiting you?** On each git commit push to a particular repo, a new build is started. Each build has a certain steps that it needs to pass - tests, build scripts, etc. So for each repo, whenever a new commit is pushed, we know if the commit is fine or needs changes. Earlier we would have to run all unit and integration tests on our local systems to know if everything's fine. Now all that and docker image builds are done on CircleCI. And we get notifications for failures and success. We can restart builds easily. We can do one-click deployments to environments. ### 7. A list of jobs and their status is... semi-useful, but it shouldn't be the default homepage. A user would be looking for failures or looking for high-level understanding (percentages and the like) of all jobs over some duration. **What problems is CircleCI solving and how is that benefiting you?** Use data to quantify statements from Engineering about whether or not the pipelines are slowing them down, and where the slowdowns are. We used this to identify common test cases with non-deterministic errors across many different areas of the code base. ### 11. Pipeline triggers instantly after merge requests - no need to update page or trigger pipeline manually. Also, sometimes rerun not work - maybe it related of how my pipelines implemented. No need to run and manage standalone services like Jenkins - believe me if you an accurate manager it will ate a lot of time. ### 12. We also use cron runs to run hourly end to end tests right now but we are probably moving to codefresh in the future for this due to the complexity. ### 13. It's really easy to create jobs and workflow and SSH into jobs and I liked the way we can use external and internal Orbs! CircleCI for sure receives my recommendation 🎉 **What do you dislike about CircleCI?** IP ranges are currently available exclusively for the Docker Executor and we had a few CI pipelines where we needed to use Machine Executor to make calls to private APIs and we couldn't! It may be avoided if your use case doesn't require Machine Executor making calls to private APIs. **What problems is CircleCI solving and how is that benefiting you?** CircleCI simplifies Continous Integration (CI) pipelines with secure and advanced features, keeping the configuration file simple and understandable at the same time! ### 14. The documentation I found helped with basic examples, but more difficult ones were mostly at trial and error. When I restart the test, I sometimes have to wait 20 - 30 minutes. The best thing about the CircleCI is its ability to quick and smooth integration with Github. Its OOTB integration with Slack and Jira is also very helpful to track and discuss the deployments on the fly. One's ability to edit and test CircleCI config files through a web browser is also a very good feature. **What do you dislike about CircleCI?** The way CircleCI provide to manage environment variables is a bit messy. Fast and resilient, especially when the release of version 2.0, we are able to benefit from docker layers caching..our build time improved by 70% Docker support is great when using container based builds -Competitive pricing and free tier -Snappy / Responsive UI The great configurational freedom to the user makes it suitable for any and all kinds of applications. The step by step view provided is very helpful UI to track the whole process. The YML templates make it very easy to set up and the git configuration part is very well documented and just a few steps can make it work. Is integrated with several tools like slack - Configure a project is simple and quick, and most of the cases once you have done this, you will not need to log in into the platform. You will have build going in a couple of hours. - I have it running in several project and works really well. **What do you dislike about CircleCI?** The ui really needs to cleanup a bit, make it simpler. Also their need to provide more integrations with third party tools Pricing could be a little bit better I guess or have a better free plan for beginners, I don't think any cons of using CircleCI actually. Have seen a few downtimes in the last couple of months. Version 2 has a lot of complexity that can make it hard to get started with. Their Orbs concept is bringing back some simplicity. **Recommendations to others considering CircleCI:** Nice tool. Should go with it, frequent update and such. Running code coverage as well makes it easy to keep our systems current and deploy immediately. **What do you dislike about CircleCI?** The lack of proper namespacing makes us a tiny bit uncomfortable with deployments. Anyone with the ability to configure or run a job can extract potentially sensitive credentials from the system. **What problems is CircleCI solving and how is that benefiting you?** We use CircleCI to dynamically build and cache Docker containers while also testing our code and, when/if all tests pass, deploy directly to production. Knowing that a deployment only requires a merge means we can trust our system to update itself and focus instead on writing production code. ### 43. Especially when it comes to alerts on messaging apps like Slack or Flowdock. Also, the integration with GitHub or Bitbucket in order to rapidly set up projects is a nice feature. If you use Docker, start using CircleCI is a matter of minutes. The automatic setup: it makes a separate branch for it and you barely have to fix some small settings. The best part probably, since I'm using Heroku for most of my projects (mainly Ruby on Rails apps), is the plugin to add it and automate the deployments. If you are a Quality Assurance Automation engineer, it's also an amazing tool to have your tests running and it is not technically hard to use. **What do you dislike about CircleCI?** Documentation on how to build my own integration (with some custom tool). The change of the User Interface design was a little confusing and I keep using the old one for some time. **Recommendations to others considering CircleCI:** Give it a try. The learning curve is quite short and you will be up and running in an eyeblink. Is great to integrate with other tools. Its price is affordable so you can try and test it for some time with some small projects. **What problems is CircleCI solving and how is that benefiting you?** I have my continuous integration and continuous delivery tasks for my projects running there. But I have also some functional tests for dev branches. As a freelancer I used to use CircleCI to run small projects or proof of concepts. It's also a good tool to learn using Continuous Integration and the foundation. The main benefit is the easy access (I mean, the low price/free option). ### 45. From GitHub to Bitbucket, it offers deep integration with biggest players of the market. And we can improve our code pipeline and quality by adding merge checks depending on build tools. Also, non-technical people can easily deploy into the desired environment without making a mess or stopping development team to make a deploy for a demo or feature review. **What do you dislike about CircleCI?** The new pricing model makes us migrate to another service. It's more expensive than AWS CodeBuild and doesn't have such integration with AWS Services. That's why it should be more cheap than AWS CodeBuild or come back with the old pricing model. The old pricing model was much cost-benefit cause we are not impacted for queuing jobs, but we could predict the pricing at the end of the month. With the new pricing model it was much, much harder to predict how much we would spend by the month. If we need to expedite a hotfix to production environment it was the fixed pricing, with the new pricing model, if an unexpected hotfix appears, that means more dollar will be spent by the of the month. **Recommendations to others considering CircleCI:** Forget about Travis and Jenkins. CircleCI is the next generation of CI/CD pipeline. But beware with your budget, with the new pricing model the billing by the end of month could be astronomical. **What problems is CircleCI solving and how is that benefiting you?** Complexity of deploy multiples times per day. It handles automated deploy for all environments, so our developers can see and delivery to QA Team what we are delivering in question of minutes and a couple of clicks. Our developers can easily see logs of what errors are throwing during the compiling. So basically, it's the end of "in my machine works" excuse. We can go directly to the point causing the error, and it's not directly assign to a developer, another developer also can see the error and find a solution. It's the end of the dependency of and especific developer. ### 46. After that It just runs and reports back to us via github seamlessly. It was very easy to write a config file and once it is in the repo it just works every time. The only tricky part was setting up custom env variables in the build... but even that was not hard **What do you dislike about CircleCI?** From time to time there are hiccups where Circle processes will just crash and run out of memory. It gives us the false impression that something we did went wrong, but a restart is all we need to do. **Recommendations to others considering CircleCI:** Make sure you have a bit of time to tweak the config.
