China Supplies a Quarter of Everything Malaysia Imports

Malaysia imported $82.40 billion worth of goods from China in 2025 — roughly a quarter of the country's total import value, and more than double what the next-largest source (Singapore) supplied. This has been true for over a decade. What's changed is what's inside that number. The breakdown: 🔌 Electrical & electronic equipment — $28.24B (the single largest category by far) ⚙️ Machinery, nuclear reactors, boilers — $18.21B 🚗 Vehicles — $3.59B 🧪 Plastics — $2.73B 🛢️ Mineral fuels — $2.32B 🏗️ Iron & steel + steel articles — $4.56B combined The part that surprised me most: this isn't a one-way relationship. Malaysia exported $44.08 billion in electronics back to China in the same year. These aren't two economies in a simple buyer-seller arrangement — they're deeply embedded in shared electronics supply chains, trading components back and forth as products move through different stages of assembly. The fastest-moving category right now: semiconductor manufacturing equipment. China's share of Malaysia's imports in this specific category jumped from 22.8% in 2025 to 34.3% in the first four months of 2026. Total imports of this equipment hit $608.7 million in 2025, with average prices rising from $382,500/tonne to $435,760/tonne — part of the broader global scramble for advanced chipmaking capacity tied to AI infrastructure buildouts. The one that draws more scrutiny: steel. Chinese hot-rolled coil typically prices $10-115/tonne below competing suppliers from India or Turkey. As of May 2025, over 46% of Malaysia's metal imports came from China — enough that Malaysia has already imposed anti-dumping duties on certain Chinese steel products to protect domestic producers, even while continuing to rely on China for the bulk of its industrial metal needs. That tension — deep interdependence alongside selective trade defense — is probably the most accurate way to describe where this relationship actually stands.
