It helps to trigger admin like us so that we know if the server is pingable, it also notify us when the file system size reaches certain level of utilization. We are working on key integrations so that an alert will create service incidents minimally in real time. As we capture historical data we are able to use Checkmk to identify thresholds that should create Alerts - warnings so that we can work on issues before they become critical. Checkmk comes with a bunch of pre-defined Hardware, Software, Application checks it supports. All our SAP and MSSQL Database servers, Vmware ESXi hosts, Mid-range Storage Systems as well as Network devices (Switches, Firewalls, Routers, WLAN-Controllers) and Media devices (mostly monitored via SNMP) can be seamlessly monitored. Most of the services and metrics are discovered automatically. Warning / Critical thresholds are automatically set at reasonable defauts. This saves a lot of time for manual configuration. The installation itself for both the server and the agent is very simple and quick. The default limit values set are perfectly adequate for a standard environment. It is impossible to imagine our everyday life without Checkmk. My first step in the morning is to check the dashboard to see if there are any problems or faults. Ease of use in setup. It was probably easier for me after years of command line administration. The product is very versatile. I was blown away at being able to make my own custom dashboards. Implementation was pretty easy and again I was familiar with cli installation. I have been leaning toward Debian lately and it runs on an old server just fine. It's an easy solution to install and then to maintain. Configuration is all in the UI which make very easy to setup. If you can't find the plugin you want, just write it as it's quite simple with python and the doc. There is a strong community both on the forums and the open source code side. If you decide to go with the paid edition, it's not expensive as the competitors. Most likely the monitor everything tool. Support is quick and provides hot fixes if needed. What do you dislike about Checkmk? When you go into the solution for the first time you have to adapt to the rules logic which can be hard at times. Also with upgrades you sometimes have to redo what you did because a new better way of things got released. It can take time for them to fix issues if you didn't pick paid support. Check mk allow you to monitor your network, servers, ac, pdu... but with plugins you can basically monitor everything you like : your gazmeters, a web page, a webcam...
