From a network perspective, it effectively stops obvious threats like malicious ranges and bogon IPs. The Layer 7 filtering is especially effective. I have some issues with SSL/TLS inspection because it breaks some of my apps, and there are legal/privacy concerns. Also, application identification sometimes misclassifies new apps.
