## About Charles Proxy
Charles Proxy is a robust web debugging proxy application designed for Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms. It enables developers to monitor, analyze, and manipulate HTTP and HTTPS traffic between their computer and the internet. By acting as an intermediary, Charles captures all data exchanged between the client and server, including requests, responses, headers, and metadata. This comprehensive visibility facilitates efficient debugging and optimization of web applications, allowing developers to identify and resolve issues promptly. Key Features and Functionality: - SSL Proxying: Decrypt and inspect SSL-encrypted traffic to view secure requests and responses in plain text. - Bandwidth Throttling: Simulate various network conditions by controlling bandwidth and introducing latency, aiding in performance testing under different scenarios. - AJAX Debugging: Examine XML and JSON requests and responses, presented in a structured tree format for easy analysis. - AMF Support: Analyze Flash Remoting (AMF0 and AMF3) messages, beneficial for developers working with Adobe Flash. - Request Modification: Repeat and edit requests to test backend changes and different inputs without altering the client application. - Breakpoints: Intercept and modify requests or responses in real-time to test specific scenarios or troubleshoot issues. - Validation Tools: Validate recorded HTML, CSS, and RSS/Atom responses using the W3C validator to ensure compliance with web standards. Primary Value and Problem Solving: Charles Proxy addresses the challenge developers face in observing and understanding the data exchanged between their applications and servers. By providing a transparent view of all HTTP and HTTPS traffic, it simplifies the process of diagnosing and fixing issues related to network communication, performance bottlenecks, and security vulnerabilities. ## Charles Proxy Reviews
  ### 1. Powerful Real-Time Network Debugging with Charles Proxy

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ravindra N. | SDET - 2, Oil & Energy, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 14, 2026

**What do you like best about Charles Proxy?**

What I like most about Charles Proxy is its ability to inspect and debug network traffic in real time. It provides complete visibility into API requests and responses, which makes troubleshooting much faster during development and QA testing.
Request and response inspection makes it easy to verify API behavior. SSL proxying allows encrypted HTTPS traffic to be analyzed. Breakpoints and request modification help test different scenarios without changing the application code. Bandwidth throttling is useful for simulating slow network conditions. Session recording helps reproduce and investigate issues consistently.
The most valuable feature is the ability to intercept and modify requests on the fly. During API testing and debugging, this allows me to validate edge cases, simulate failures, and investigate issues without requiring backend changes, which saves a significant amount of time.

**What do you dislike about Charles Proxy?**

Initial SSL certificate setup can be confusing, especially for new users.
Large amounts of network traffic can make sessions difficult to navigate.
Finding specific requests in heavily used applications sometimes requires extensive filtering. The biggest challenge is the initial setup and configuration process. Once everything is configured, the tool works very well, but setting up SSL proxying across different devices and environments can take some time and troubleshooting.

**What problems is Charles Proxy solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Charles Proxy solves the problem of limited visibility into network communication between applications and backend services. Without a proxy tool, diagnosing API issues, request failures, or unexpected responses can be much more difficult. Provides complete visibility into HTTP and HTTPS requests and responses. Helps identify API errors, incorrect payloads, and backend issues quickly. Makes it easy to validate request headers, parameters, and response data. Allows simulation of different network conditions for testing. Supports request modification and replay for troubleshooting edge cases. As someone involved in QA and API testing, Charles Proxy significantly reduces the time required to investigate issues. Instead of relying only on application logs, I can see exactly what data is being sent and received, which makes root cause analysis much faster and more accurate.

**Reviewed Date:** November 28, 2019

**What do you like best about Charles Proxy?**

Charles proxy was easy to install, and easy to use once I got the hang of it. I always used web based proxies, so this was a little different but once I got the settings right, all was smooth sailing.

**What do you dislike about Charles Proxy?**

Not much really. I dont have much experience with ACTUAL proxy software, all of my experience has been with a web based server, so I haven't noticed anything I dislike, because I have nothing to compare it to. .

**Recommendations to others considering Charles Proxy:**

If you need a proxy Charles works. I am still in the trial stages (I just started my own business so everything is still getting worked out) but I will continue to look at other proxies for aesthetics (I am a girl lol) and just to stay on top of the game as much as I can in terms of knowledge base. But this solved my problems in the short term & may end up keeping it.

**What problems is Charles Proxy solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Anonymity ... Its nice to be able to browse with out the weird pop up things I used to get without it. And weird wifi interruptions. Never thought about that one.

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Internet | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 18, 2019

**What do you like best about Charles Proxy?**

Once setup and working, it's an extremely helpful way to swap out files.

**What do you dislike about Charles Proxy?**

It requires a good deal of setup. Getting the SSH tokens up and working requires a technical background or a well documented implementation guide.

**What problems is Charles Proxy solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I work in tag management with Tealium and Charles was one of the ways we tested changes we were making. We'd swap out a file delivered by Tealium with something local on our machines.
