So one thing to understand is that the core of our AI model is long-term memory, which is comprised of conversations, documents, websites, and any external knowledge over time. The problem arises only when it comes to keeping the uploads of existing data and syncing of external knowledge robust and up-to-date. We were evaluating building in-house solutions based on Langchain, but it was a lot harder than we initially thought. There were bursts of workloads during ad-hoc times, upload speed was not reliable, and the setting up of an entire system was very time-consuming. What we like most about Carbon is kind of like this one-stop-shop for all of our data-connection concerns, at a reliable speed and a reasonable cost. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about Carbon? Something we were hoping to see them implement in the future is more transparency and options in their pricing plans. I think that the clients that Carbon targets will be in many different situations and would like some flexibility in their pricing options for both good and bad times. What problems is Carbon solving and how is that benefiting you? I think the best analogy here is in a restaurant. For us to create a strong AI model for our clients, there’s of course the chef (our design team) who tailors it to the needs of our customers, but equally important are all of the prep staff that ensure that the ingredients are best-sourced and ready to cook. Carbon is like that critical element of ensuring that our data is accurate and reliable for to train our LLM, and has played a critical role in providing us a solution that saves us valuable time to focus on our product, as opposed to having to painstakingly develop one ourselves. Just to give an idea of what we have used them for, they have accelerated our integration timelines by using their Javascript SDK for user authentication, and Webhooks system, and created a unified API library to access content for synced files. At first glance, they’re responsible for connecting the external data to train AI, and you’re like why can’t companies just do that themselves. Well the thing is that for many of these new AI companies, making a significant investment for engineers to develop connections to so many sources of external data is expensive and very risky especially if they’re cash strapped. Why would you spend months and massive amounts of money to set one up yourself when you can reach out to Carbon and they can handle it for you? Even if you do set one up in-house, you might have to spend more to update it to all of the new programs that roll out from time to time. Kind of a no-brainer for me. Carbon’s downside is that the pricing is against you if your company has few customers using your product, but high usage per customer because of how their plans work. What do you dislike about Carbon? I wish they provided a course of some sort to train our team on how to use their product. There’s a certain onboarding learning curve if you don’t have any technical experience, and I think if they offered some module as a guide for maybe a product manager, it could save our developers more time. To train our model, we need data, and oftentimes it is difficult to get ahold of that data on a larger scale, especially if there are different sources. Developing a whole system is not only expensive to set up, but also to maintain as new programs are rolled out every so often. So we were one of the early adopters of Carbon which may be a bias since it is likely the reason why our favourite part of their company is their responsive support network. In the beginning, there were several bugs and issues with their tools, but each time we pointed them out in the Slack channel, a member of their team would respond almost immediately (even at 2am once!) and the issue would be resolved the same day. The one thing I might point out is that oftentimes there might be some processing delays throughout the day probably during periods where they are experiencing some more demand. So we have over 50,000 users using our product for AI assistant, and the issue is that we needed to set them up in a way that could integrate Google Drive and Notion into our retrieval pipeline. They were able to provide us that, a web-scraper (2,500 pages from URLs or sitemaps), manage scheduled re-syncs, and handle Javascript-heavy websites.
