I can almost always figure out how to make videos look the way I want with transitions, audio tracks, and as many layers as I need to create some fun content. **What do you dislike about Camtasia?** Sadly, Camtasia's premium features are now available only to those willing to purchase a recurring subscription. I even called to see if I could bolt on Audiate and maintain my one-time user license, but that isn't the case. I understand recurring revenue and SAAS is kind of the way to go for tech companies, but I was really sad to be a long-time user who has purchased multiple licenses and maintenance agreements over the years, as well as promoting the product and getting other licensed users for them, only to be told that my past purchases didn't really matter, and the only way to have access to the "new and best" of Camtasia was to become a subscriber. I'll still use my last purchased license of Camtasia, but it is likely there are other products that would meet my needs, have the premium features I am looking for, and cost less, when the time comes to upgrade. **What problems is Camtasia solving and how is that benefiting you?** I need videos that look good without needing to pay out the nose for video production. ### 2. It's really handy as an all-in-one platform with camera, teleprompter, and editing software. I appreciate the convenience and ability to film and edit video all in one workspace. Not being in the tech or editing space, I like that I can use only one software instead of downloading and leveraging multiple software packages. The initial setup of Camtasia was very easy. **What do you dislike about Camtasia?** The editing software is fairly limited at least for the package I have. I have to use iMovie and photo on a mac to correct some of the parameters in a MOV or jpeg. I have sold over 25 licenses. **What do you dislike about Camtasia?** Now that it is available on a subscription only basis, my clients (both present and future) are now opting for Canva. This is a loss to TechSmith as well as myself. **What problems is Camtasia solving and how is that benefiting you?** It was a perfect option for my clients (purchasers of outdoor digital displays for small and medium sized businesses). That is, until the only purchase option became by subscription. Now they are going to Canva, creating lesser effective content but staying within budget parameters. Once the platform included an outline feature around text, it became the best option for outdoor digital users creating 4-5 second videos to advertise in front of their businesses. There is no further need for updates and advancements in the software that they have need of. Unfortunately, paying for a program every year, to include upgrades that they don't need or even seek, is not a working solution. What was once perfect, has become unattractive financially. ### 7. There is also a glitch: when I try to edit the captions and click on the bubbles, the word doesn't change as expected. I often have to click multiple times in different places before I can successfully modify the transcription of a specific word. **What problems is Camtasia solving and how is that benefiting you?** I expect to receive accurate transcriptions, but the captions are often out of place, which makes everything confusing. While the English transcriptions are fairly decent, the quality drops significantly when switching to Spanish—they are just terrible. ### 8. The captioning is not usable for our videos as we use a lot of specialist technical jargon and acronyms. When removing gaps I sometimes notice that it removes a lot of spoken audio which seems to be hidden so I don't use that feature any more. Somtimes I need to move the audio out of sync with the video and this isn't possible in Audiate. I find it still can crash and lose my work but this seems to be improving. I still find other audio tools are better at cleaning up noise and improving quality so I still have an extra step in my production process. **What problems is Camtasia solving and how is that benefiting you?** Highlighting where editing is needed. ### 10. The editing tools are pretty straightforward. Being able to drag and drop and then edit multiple media and audio selections is—again—super intuitive. Basic audio editing functions and effects are available and provide enough flexibility to help you organize and polish things up. If you want to dive into more advanced audio effects and features, you'll probably want to check out a free trial of their Audiate add-on. I haven't yet but probably will in the future. I haven't had the need to integrate with other platforms at this point, but it appears to be solid on that front. **What do you dislike about Camtasia?** Recording live "System Audio" on MacOS is an issue I've run into and continue to. **What problems is Camtasia solving and how is that benefiting you?** Camtasia helps me to create and edit training tools. For years it was my go to product for collecting and integrating clips and commentary for two organizations. Since upgrading to the most recent version my product has just stopped working., I wanted to record a session I was teaching via web cam and it would not record. I use it 1 or 2 times per week in conjunction with Camtasia to edit the audio track and then sync it back to Camtasia. It's good enough that I'm not actively looking for anything better, but I expect there are better tools out there given the myriad I've seen ads for. I hope that Audiate catches up with these other tools soon. I've gotten into a mode in which I: 1. Record a video using Camtasia 2. Assign the basic video layout, timeline, etc., in Camtasia but don't do any major editing. 3. Edit the audio in Audiate, especially removing redundant words, long pauses, etc. This then updates Camtasia with edits to match the audio edits. 4. Complete my video editing only after completing Audiate editing, such as removing swaths of unnecessary time, moving scenes around, etc. **What do you dislike about Camtasia?** Here's why I gave it a 6 instead of a 10: * integration between Audiate and Camtasia exists but it very touchy. Editing Camtasia after sync'ing it to Audiate makes the Audiate out of sync and it doesn't seem to recover. I can break the link and then relink, but that takes another 7-10 minutes while it reinterprets the audio and sometimes has detrimental effects to Camtasia edits resulting from the first set. * can't edit the text in Audiate and have it correct the phonetics. I was expecting this...the soundtrack will not be changed to match the words edited in Audiate. * removing audio removes the corresponding video, which makes for a very choppy video. I was expecting some type of motion blend to make the video more fluid. * silencing audio (rather than removing it) makes it less choppy and less distracting, but silences it completely. If there's any background noise in the audio (even after noise removal), this is noticeable. I was hoping it would merely remove the voice print. **What problems is Camtasia solving and how is that benefiting you?** When editing videos, Audiate allows me to snip out portions based on the audio script, like a word document. It's focused on reducing the existing audio, not rearranging or adding to the audio. ### 13. I bought Camtasia 2022 and a couple of weeks later, they want to charge another $100+ to upgrade to 2023. They're very expensive relative to other options and this, combined with their annual release model really feels backward. I hate that pricing model. I use Camtasia for quick edits, easy Zooms and some light screen-recording. I was having problems understanding the video recording features. I don't know the depth or intended depth of audio editing either, so that may be on me. Lastly, I wish I could edit volume levels in the same clip. The best news is that it's well-supported and not so huge that you need to upgrade your computer to use it. I had started off with another program that I'd used in other jobs and moved to Camtasia rather than requesting new hardware. It makes creating and animating videos easy and intuitive. **What do you dislike about Camtasia?** Small annoyances, especially when moving from PC version to MAC version. Like the PC version has a library you can add often-used elements to - the MAC version doesn't. Every shape or word you add has a default drop shadow, so you have to delete that from every single element you create within the program. What I would do is walk them through assignments and sometimes my grading of their individual papers to help convey my vocal tone when I was giving them feedback. The system is easy to use to actually record, though I struggled with the editing a bit. Sometimes I just wanted it to capture my screen while I was editing and my voice and that took me a bit to figure out on my own. **What do you dislike about Camtasia?** I had a lot of difficulty in uploading Camtasia videos. I was told it synced with Blackboard but for some reason I could not get the syncing to work. So I ended up having to create a classroom YouTube account, upload the video's there, and then post the link to the YouTube account to blackboard. The extra step was kind of a hassle, but perhaps if I had fiddled with it some more I could have gotten it to work. I honestly do not know whether this was a Blackboard problem -- in general I abhor Blackboard. **Recommendations to others considering Camtasia:** If you are looking for an software to use to give video feedback to the students this is a good one but to me it is as comparable as other software used for the same thing. It's so expensive too and the trial version....wait, is there a trial version? **What problems is Camtasia solving and how is that benefiting you?** The biggest benefit is to my students. I can walk them through individual feedback in a way that conveys my upbeat tone. It keeps them from misinterpreting my comments for improvement which helps them learn and retain information better. The combination of screen recorder and editing tools give you just about anything you need to create screenshares and edit them into good shape. **What do you dislike about Camtasia?** The software suffers from a lot of bugs. Sometimes it's just small things that you can get used to - like sound files not importing if they're a certain format (even though they're meant to be supported). But sometimes it can be crippling, such as when you spend hours on a video, don't save as often as you should, and it crashes without any chance of recovery. It also has the capability to introduce interactive elements and easily track statistics when hosted on Camtasia's sites, which makes it easier for educators to assess students' learning and tutorial effectiveness.
