I've been using Intermapper since the original Dartware release, and this has always been the reason I've stuck with it. The new release I just upgraded retains a high degree of compatibility with older versions, but adds important new capabilities like probe groups the original didn't have."

"My favorite software at the office. : System Administrators live in a world of fixing broken, intermittent, and/or frequently ambiguous problems. Therefore, when there's a system that works flawlessly without needing repeated maintenance, we take notice. PRTG is the most reliable and low maintenance software we have in the office, and we love it. We lean on PRTG frequently to help us identify and resolve issues on other systems. PRTG makes it extremely easy to do so, and we are continuously grateful to have a network monitor that never creates additional work for us, and only ever makes our jobs easier =] Functionality wise: Out of the box, PRTG monitors just about everything. We had this watching critical components of over 50 servers within an hour. For those things that PRTG miraculously does not support out of the box, they have an EXCELLENT API where you can create and integrate your own custom sensors (powershell, bat, or exe) with ease. We've used this to watch storage pool health, virtual disk health, even the number of CDs and DVDs in our disk printing robot. Not only can you use powershell and such for custom sensors, you can even run these scripts and programs as custom "notifications". You set up a custom notification to run in response to a certain event (remote desktop unresponsive on server X), and when that event occurs, PRTG can run your script (restart server X) automatically. We've used this on our failover node to restart dell sonicwall whenever it feels like not working (which is rather frequent). In short, not only is PRTG a monitoring tool, you can also use it as a self-repair tool for your networks and systems. "

"Good Network Intrusion Detection System: Snort is a open source network intrusion system. Snort when installed on the system, it captures the network packets the system receives and either saves it to a log file, displays it on the console. It also has a mode where it just applies the rules which are defined for analyzing the packets it receives and identify any malicious content which is harmful for the system and then alert the user. The performance of snort is depends on the configuration and might also give false positives."

"Nagios is an excellent platform to monitor your network or network services: - What I like most about nagios is that it is constantly checking each host on the network and detects any failure that may be occurring, such as high latencies, lost packets or the service dropped in its entirety. - Another thing that I like about nagios are the alerts that it emits constantly, that way it is not necessary to be entering to check the network constantly, because it gives you an alert in case there is a problem with a host. - A benefit that I have obtained from nagios, is that it allows you to integrate with other platforms and applications, that makes the work much easier."

"Excellent tool to monitor internet traffic: This tool is indispensable for my daily work, with it I can monitor the internet traffic of entry and exit of all the users of the network. Monitoring interfaces and devices from a centralized console, being able to track the destination and source of traffic generated, I love being able to design alerts for excessive consumption that slows down the speed in the network. I can manage the bandwidth of the available links and verify with the netflow data unexpected traffic or from unknown sources. OP Manager is a valuable asset in the organization since it allows us to have the maximum performance at any time."

Their pricing model (data points per minute) really shows that they understand SaaS customers. This helps me manage spend by choosing what metrics I report and how often. SignalFlow has been very useful for more complex charts. Their recent improvements to detectors is very welcome. We use a long list of their integrations (redis, mongodb, ES, C* and more) are great. They open-source the collected plugins which allows us to make local changes. Like us, they are growing and looking to provide more and more features. We plan on using many of these new features as they are released / mature."

"Best root cause analysis Java tool: The installation is simple - I typically go with the manual JAR install because it's super simple... drop a JAR on the filesystem and add a JVM argument. Once running, the UI is easy to navigate - but not overly simplistic. You can drill down from high-level overview charts down to profiling stack-traces within a few clicks. Easily the best tool I've used for root causes analysis on the JVM - and one of the cheapest too."
