As an academic, obtaining high-quality data is not always easy, especially when conducting research intended to improve teaching practices. Having access to dependable and relevant data has therefore been a significant benefit. I have also greatly appreciated being connected with Dani, who has been an exceptional partner throughout the process. She walked me through the platform, helped me access the data needed for our project, and worked closely with us to identify additional datasets that could support our research. Academics are often balancing research with demanding teaching and personal responsibilities, so projects do not always progress according to the original timeline. There were occasions when our data credits were approaching expiration before we had been able to fully use them. The team was patient, flexible, and understanding, working with us to extend or update access without placing unnecessary pressure on us. The quarterly check-ins have also been extremely helpful. They provide a valuable sense of accountability as we work toward producing publishable research, while also creating opportunities to discuss any additional data needs. Overall, I am very grateful for the team’s responsiveness, flexibility, and genuine commitment to supporting academic research. **What do you dislike about Bright Data?** There is very little that I dislike about Bright Data, particularly because this initiative is designed to help nonprofit institutions and academics gain access to reliable data. At the same time, no dataset is perfect. For example, the LinkedIn dataset primarily contains recent job postings and offers limited archival data. Historical postings would be especially valuable for research examining how employer signals and workforce expectations have changed over time. However, this limitation does not appear to be specific to Bright Data. It largely reflects the nature of the source platform, since LinkedIn job postings expire and may no longer be available for collection. I also appreciated Dani’s responsiveness in helping us explore alternatives. When we discussed the limitations of the LinkedIn data, she suggested that we consider an Indeed dataset that might better support our research needs. Overall, the limitations I encountered were primarily associated with the platforms from which the data were collected rather than with Bright Data itself. **What problems is Bright Data solving and how is that benefiting you?** Bright Data is addressing one of the most significant challenges academics face: access to reliable data. I would even go so far as to describe the initiative as a godsend. When I initially contacted Bright Data, I was prepared to purchase the data. Instead, the team reached out to let me know that I might qualify for an initiative that provides nonprofit organizations and academic researchers with access to data for research purposes. Data access can be extremely difficult and costly, and these constraints sometimes force academics to pursue research based on what data are readily available rather than the questions that are most important. Bright Data has enabled me to investigate questions that have direct implications for students, universities, and teaching practices. My research was motivated by the rapid democratization of data analytics and artificial intelligence. As generative AI became embedded in many of the tools used by business analysts, my students became increasingly concerned about their futures. Some came to my office and asked whether they should still major in business analytics now that the tools used in the profession are increasingly powered by generative AI. As their professor, I felt that I should have answers, but I did not yet have evidence-based answers. That experience motivated me to study employer signals and better understand the competencies organizations are seeking in an AI-enabled workplace. Bright Data has been an invaluable partner in pursuing that objective. I find it great that it lets me create complex scraping automations and structure data with just one or two prompts, making it accessible to non-techies like me. Previously, I was supposed to do tons of development and testing for every single website, whereas now it’s just a URL and a prompt. The initial setup was super easy, and the interface is clean, with all the information readily available. Their extensive documentation and a great YouTube channel with recommendations and how-to videos make everything straightforward. Bright Data plays a crucial role in my data extraction, structuring, and validation processes. The platform is perfect for dealing with very secure and complex websites, providing robust, reliable, and stable access, and I believe there is basically no competition that matches its level of reliability. **What do you dislike about Bright Data?** You should have a certain level of understanding of how things are working in the scraping space, but it's not the problem of Bright Data. It's just overall there is a certain threshold for entering the scraping world. And so, yes, basic knowledge is still necessary. Though I cannot say it's a Bright Data downside. **What problems is Bright Data solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use Bright Data to automate scraping processes with very little technical skill, creating complex scraping and data-structuring automations. It's perfect for accessing secure, complex websites (i.e. Gartner) with premium proxy infrastructure, making tasks possible that were difficult before. ### 6. I'm very grateful that we got access to the data for free. The different options to cut the data being shown from the start is very useful. Also, the initial setup was very easy. **What do you dislike about Bright Data?** Initially, we were a little confused about whether we could simply collect a certain number of a given sample or if we needed to cut the dataset to stay within our budget. Specifically, we only had the budget for roughly 1.1 million profiles. We weren't sure if we needed to filter the dataset to collect less than 1.1 million or if there was a way to just limit it to 1.1 million. Eventually, we clicked the button to go forward with the purchase, and only there did we find the option to limit the sample size. The lack of visibility confused us for a little bit. Also, lacking skills data from LinkedIn profiles is a big pain, but I understand that's probably a LinkedIn TOS issue. **What problems is Bright Data solving and how is that benefiting you?** Bright Data lets me access LinkedIn user data despite scraping restrictions and offers intuitive access with useful options to filter datasets. It's beneficial that the access was free. ### 7. The proxy infrastructure performs consistently, the zone-based setup integrates cleanly with our backend via the API, and the control panel gives us enough visibility to manage things without friction. What really sets Bright Data apart, though, is the support experience. I submitted a small UX request about hiding deleted proxies in the My Proxies list, the support engineer replied quickly with a workaround and escalated it to engineering. A few days later, R&D had shipped persistent filter caching to address it. That kind of feedback loop between users and product is exactly what you want from a critical vendor. **What do you dislike about Bright Data?** Pricing is the main pain point, especially for smaller customers. Entry-level users pay significantly higher unit rates than large enterprises with high committed volumes, which is exactly the opposite of what would actually help smaller teams grow. It puts early-stage projects at a real competitive disadvantage against providers offering more accessible starter tiers. A pricing model that genuinely supports smaller customers, rather than reserving the best rates for those who already spend the most, would be fairer and would also help those customers grow into larger accounts over time. **What problems is Bright Data solving and how is that benefiting you?** Bright Data gives us reliable, scalable access to web data that we wouldn't be able to collect at the volume or consistency we need on our own. Before adopting it, we were dealing with frequent blocks, inconsistent response rates, and significant engineering time spent maintaining proxy infrastructure ourselves. That overhead made it hard to focus on the actual product. With Bright Data, the proxy layer is effectively a solved problem for us. The zone-based setup integrates cleanly with our backend, performance is consistent across regions, and we no longer have to babysit infrastructure to keep data flowing. That's freed up meaningful engineering time and made our data collection significantly more dependable. ### 8. They provide help and advice, which is valuable since getting data from various places requires work. **What do you dislike about Bright Data?** The product has lots of different features, it can be difficult to tell what to use. The docs are not great or were not great when I used them before. LLMs don't seem to have a good handle on how to use it. The marketing pages say things that might be good for prospecting, but they can be confusing as an existing customer; they sound like maybe you'd missed a specific product but turns out it's just what you'd already been using. The initial setup was tricky with confusion about sync async usage etc. The chat feature could help, but I haven't tried it recently. Previously it wasn't particularly useful. Some better API docs with use cases would be helpful as well. **What problems is Bright Data solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use Bright Data for scraping public data, especially retrieving public reviews and customer data. ### 9. I want to save as much time as possible, especially with integrating new third-party interfaces, and Bright Data does this really well with custom API endpoints and AI endpoints that have very easy access to. I don't have to go through a bunch of hoops and pages; it's right there on the page when I log in. The initial setup was very easy, and that's one of my favorite features about Bright Data. It was one of the pros about Bright Data, how easy it is to use. **What do you dislike about Bright Data?** I would've liked new features and think there are some really cool things you can do outside of just proxies and scraping. For example, I had to outsource a third-party web browser through AI agents to scrape JavaScript heavy websites. It would be cool if Bright Data also integrated this, so I don't have to go out to another application. I also noticed that some websites are banned or blocked by the proxies, possibly because I don't have the dedicated business use case approval yet.
