They also offer a easy to use API to create short links. **What do you dislike about Bitly?** The price tag. When you compare their price and what they offer compared to competitors, it's enough to really make you cringe. What's especially cringe worthy is that their isn't a middle ground between pricing tiers. If you want more than on domain, you're suddenly looking at paying a couple hundred a month, whereas with Rebrandly for $30-$40 a month you can get 5 domains, more short links, etc. However, at the end of the day, Bitly integrates with all my services and services like Rebrandly aren't always supported. **What problems is Bitly solving and how is that benefiting you?** Not necessarily a problem, but when sharing posts on social media, I prefer to have a branded short domain. While this is an upcharge, it's well worth it for the peace of mind that a familiar domain name brings your audience. **What do you dislike about Bitly?** A lot of valuable features come with forever mountain upgrades so I don't have access to everything I would like for financial reasons. I'm not a fan of systems that require continues upgrades for feature access. **Recommendations to others considering Bitly:** Consider upgrading to use a custom domain, its well worth the investment. **What problems is Bitly solving and how is that benefiting you?** My links are trackable and using my custom domain so they fit subtly into my content without raising alarm. Also although I first got the service for link shortening, I actually now use it for more tangible link creation e.g. domain.com/new-case-study. We use in the advertising realm and it really puts the power back in our hands without always needing to seek out support for link swaps. **What do you dislike about Bitly?** Reporting is a little weak. Would be nice to see the IP address of the clicks, with the ability to export. Also, the limits of redirects are very low, even at the highest plan. Would like to see an unlimited option. Lastly, I would like to be able to create multiple unique Bitly links that all can point to one single destination. However, tracking things, not on your own site can be difficult. This can give you some idea of the engagement for those things. **What do you dislike about Bitly?** It's still only high-level tracking like you can really only track clicks and things like that. You can't measure further down the process through this. It can also be highly susceptible to manipulation since there aren't really other ways to prove it. I also dislike the inability to have multiple tracking links to the same place but be a different bit.ly link (they tend to try to merge the same links together). **Recommendations to others considering Bitly:** It's a good tool to gain insights into external website links. It can also be useful for shortening links for those important landing pages that are too long to share appropriately. Keep in mind that the things like Google Analytics (if set up properly) will have better tracking when you are sending people to your site and tracking the outcome. **What problems is Bitly solving and how is that benefiting you?** Bit.ly has been used to measure link clicks on properties that aren't our own. The easiest example I can think of contests through other web hosts. We can't add tracking through our Google analytics since it's not our site but we can at least track link interaction. Also, depending on how you set it up, you can even use it to track link interaction from different channels to help find out what channels are boosting that goal (like a contest) the best. The automated creation from a spreadsheet of short URLs was amazing, and the free trial of the pro version worked brilliantly. The custom URL option was great, and really made my links unique and identified them as my brand. Online portal was easy to navigate, and the Chrome extension made a big difference when just grabbing a link from the web. Being able to remember the URL for my Vcard download and recite it easily was neat, and made me look very professional! **What do you dislike about Bitly?** It's hard to criticise anything about it except for the price. Unfortunately (probably because they were the first) they have a lot of competition standing on their shoulders, and therefore able to do it cheaper. For someone like me with a need for just occasional custom URL shortening, I couldn't justify the price, over the competition which offered the same thing for free (for now, I guess). **Recommendations to others considering Bitly:** I think if you're in the market for a URL shortener which you can absolutely rely on, and don't mind paying for that privilege (as well as being universally recognised and respected) then Bitly is the way to go. Whilst I know there are free options, the tease of having the custom URL was too great a perk to miss out on by going back to the free version after the trial (unless I misunderstood the offer). So yes, I'd recommend it, and I didn't even scratch the surface of the tracking and reporting features. **What problems is Bitly solving and how is that benefiting you?** Being able to write down important URLs like my vcard, my CRM backend login page, things like that, where otherwise I would have needed to save the link somewhere (and wouldn't dream of typing it out - I'd have made so many typos!). Then once you get bitten by the 'shortening' bug, I started shortening everything. We've utilized this in multiple areas of our company as a branding tool. **What do you dislike about Bitly?** My one gripe is the limited number of Redirects allowed on the basic plans. **What problems is Bitly solving and how is that benefiting you?** We send a lot of direct mail out to consumers, and our URLs were long and not easy to type. We were able to get a 4 letter, well branded domain and make our links nice and short for the consumers.
