## Betterment at Work Reviews
  ### 1. Solid Investment Options but Challenging Setup

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Telecommunications | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 27, 2026

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Betterment at Work because integrates with our payroll system, Gusto, which makes it easy to use within our existing setup. I appreciate the investment options available to our employees, and the low cost of index fund investing is a significant benefit. Our employees find it very simple to invest, which adds to its value. The product itself is great. I have no complaints about the product itself.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

The customer support has been very disappointing. When I needed assistance with our account, it look weeks to get a meaningful response. I sent multiple emails, many of which were never acknowledged or responded to, despite getting confirmation that support tickets had been created. Instead of feeling like a valued customer, I had to keep chasing down someone who could help. What was even more disappointing was that, when I did receive responses, they were rude, dismissive, and completely lacking in customer care. Rather than working towards a solution, interactions were non-apologetic, passive aggressive, and seemed that the team did not value or even care if we were customers, even on calls with upper level management. Being a company plan administrator, I would expect to be treated kindly and professionally. We like the product a lot, but the overall experience with Betterment at Work from day one has fallen well short of expectations. We will be moving our business elsewhere at the first opportunity. I sincerely hope they can fix this issue, as we like the product. But customer support and overall experience with a company is part of the whole package.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Betterment at Work integrates with our payroll system, simplifying 401k management. I like the investment options and the low cost of index fund investing, making it easy for employees to invest and manage funds.

  ### 2. ADP Integration Falls Short: Frequent Login Issues and No Real Sync

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Non-Profit Organization Management | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 24, 2026

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

I like the integrations with ADP, but I preferred Justworks where it was all together.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

I can never log into it, and it's not actually linked to ADP where a change in one creates a change on the other side.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

None, it causes problems. I'd rather use something else.

**Official Response from Nicole Bliman:**

  ### 3. Easy-to-Navigate UI, But Customer Support Falls Short

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Mental Health Care | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 15, 2026

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

User experience interface is helpful and easy to navigate

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

Customer service does not know the answer to most simple questions

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It offers a 401k

  ### 4. Functional Software that leaves something to be desired in terms of support

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 18, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Betterment at work is a very simple, plug-and-play solution for a business owner who knows exactly what they need, how to file form 5500 on their own, and doesn't want anything customized. It is less expensive than other solutions that we have used, and the user experience - particularly for customers of betterment - is much simpler than what is offered by other, smaller third party administrators.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

Betterment at Work has frequently dropped the ball for our clients when it comes to filing required forms in a timely manner, reminding business owners of their duties as the administrator, etc. The Customer Support does not always respond in a timely manner - often it takes a few attempts to get a response. Overall, for just a few dollars more than what Betterment at Work charges, a business owner can use a full-service 401k TPA and have the comfort of a provider who is willing to take on actual liability for the plan and its administration. This is what caused us to stop using Betterment at Work in all cases.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The tool is a relatively easy to implement 401k plan for a business owner who may need to implement one, wants a cheap solution and is not looking for any customizations or a relationship with an active support team. This platform benefits us in that there is often name recognition with Betterment and clients appreciate the ease of use for the end user.

  ### 5. Feel a bit lost in the shuffle of a large corporation

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Non-Profit Organization Management | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 19, 2024

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Offering ESG Funds was a huge factor in our decision to use Betterment for our 401K provider. Also, liked the extra options for Roth, Student Loan qualification, 529's, etc.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

The onboarding process was clumsy at best. Slow response to emails and the schedule for a 15 minute phone call was days out. The customer service process isn't any better once you are through the onboarding process. It takes days to get on their call schedule for what should be a simple 5 minute inquiry. I had an issue with our year end audit and was corresponding through email. The rep did not understand my instructions, so now I'm getting hit with a $200 fee to re-do the test.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Love the ease of using Betterment for our 401K options from the employee perspective. Implementation was pretty bumpy due to inability to get response from people via email and having to book days in advance to schedule a call instead of being able to call a representative. The year end test was a debacle. They made a mistake and I now have to pay $200 to do a retest.

**Official Response from Nicole Bliman:**

> Hi there,

Thank you for your feedback. At Betterment, we are always striving to do things better (as our name suggests!).

The reason we've structured our support system around scheduled calls is to ensure that each client receives our full, undivided attention during their support session. By scheduling calls, we can properly prepare for the conversation, ensuring we're fully equipped to address your specific needs. This approach helps minimize wait times during the call, prevents interruptions, and leads to more effective problem-solving, as our team can focus on one client at a time. We strive to have calls available within 24-48 hours; we apologize if you experienced a longer lead time than that.

Please let us know if you have any additional comments or questions. In fact, we’re so dedicated to improving our relationships with clients such as yourself, we invite you to reach out to our Sr. Director of Client Experience, Chelsey Lubin. You can reach her at chelsey.lubin@betterment.com.

Have a great day,

  ### 6. Betterment Honest 401k review

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 12, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Betterment at Work simplifies the 401k space for our clientele. Tim McDonald is by far the best part of Betterment at work. Having him work with us on our clients have been a complete pleasure.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

Betterment at work is not conducive for hands on advisors to be able to manage 401(k)'s. Prior to working with our own client service rep simple issues would take a couple weeks to figure out. We use betterment every day and the integrations are nice but the reporting software is just drop dead horrific. We haven't ever had an issue with Betterment at work when setting up a new 401k but the administrative issues that we receive makes us very weary to use Betterment.

In terms of customer support we have experienced long wait times, along with multiple different people working on the same project. Thus, having to explain the issue multiple times.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

If I had no idea how to be an advisor on a 401k plan Betterment would be the ideal Recordkeeper to use.

**Official Response from Nicole Bliman:**

> Hi there,

Thank you for your feedback. We’re so glad to hear you enjoy working with Tim. We've been making investments in our Client Experience team to help bring this level of satisfaction to more clients.

We’d love to learn more about the administrative issues you’ve been experiencing to make sure they get addressed. And we’re happy to report that in the coming weeks, additional reporting functionality will be rolled out in the advisor dashboard.

Many of our improvements stem directly from feedback from clients like yourself. In fact, we’re so dedicated to improving the experience for our clients, we invite you to reach out to our Sr. Director of Client Experience, Chelsey Lubin. You can reach her at chelsey.lubin@betterment.com.

  ### 7. Mostly works well but has terrible onboarding and support

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Entertainment | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 05, 2024

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

The employee experience is pretty good and product works well. The fees and returns are inline with other providers. SECURE 2.0 implemenation is meh for student loan tracking now that they took away student loan management. It's a great product for people who want to never think about their 401k. The employee mobile app is pretty good.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

Onboarding is not how it's sold and mostly on the company to implement. The Rippling integration is supposed to be 360 but doesn't work is demoed. It took about a month to actually get working with multiple emails. If there are any issues the company has to figure out what should have happened, then calculate and give Betterment the employee deductions. I still have "Onboarding Tasks" to complete that were done over a year ago. Overall it's a ton extra work for the admin, but the employees don't see how klugey it is.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Great for employees with no investing experience

**Official Response from Nicole Bliman:**

  ### 8. Challenges with Betterment Integration: A Small Business Owner's Experience

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ian L. | Owner, Internet, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 27, 2024

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

What I liked most about Betterment was the improved experience it offered to my employees. After transitioning from Slavic401k, which my employees found less user-friendly, Betterment's platform made investment management significantly easier. Their website was intuitive and allowed my team to navigate and manage their investments more efficiently. This enhancement was a noticeable improvement over our previous provider, and it positively impacted the overall employee experience with their 401k plans.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

The integration process with Justworks was not as seamless as promised. After onboarding, I discovered that manual synchronization was required between the two platforms. Additionally, Betterment's support options were limited to email, as screen-sharing was not available, which made troubleshooting difficult. The task of setting up automated withdrawals was ultimately pushed onto Justworks, complicating the process even further. These challenges, combined with my own frustration, led to the unfortunate default of my 401k loans. While I accept responsibility for my part, I believe Betterment oversold the ease and functionality of their integration.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Betterment is helping to solve the problem of employee engagement with their retirement plans by offering a user-friendly platform that makes investment management easier. Compared to our previous provider, Slavic401k, Betterment’s website provides a much more intuitive experience for my employees, allowing them to navigate their investments with greater ease and confidence.

  ### 9. Easy to use and cost-effective for early-stage companies, customer support experience is lackluster

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Gabby M. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 27, 2024

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Betterment was an easy and cost-effective way for our small company to offer 401(k) plans and expanded benefits to our employees. We love to support other startups as well and liked that a majority of the setup was self-serve. Love how intutive their platform is to use as an employee with all the personal finance and budgeting tools and education resources they have for employees.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

We have had SO many issues using Betterment. Its a hassle to switch 401K providers, so now we feel stuck.

Overall, the platform dashboard as a company admin is minimal and often confusing. Betterment "integrates" with our HRIS, Gusto, however the integration causes several issues and data discrepencies, which causes additional manual work or support tickets from us that tend to never get resolved. Their integration, of lack thereof, also required us to have to make W-2 corrections, since not all employee and employer contributions were properly reported to our HRIS via the integration and thus to the employees' W-2. We also had several new employees whose contribution selections were recorded, but not reflected properly via Betterment, which resulted in employees' not getting the appropriete contributions. As a result, our company was required to make employer contributions to cover these discrepencies (by law). The auto-enroll for new employees may be standard but it'd be nice to have additional notifications or reminders to employees to set their investement distibutions and set their contributions instead of us having to manually remind folks. No phone supprot is a huge hassle. When we submit support tickets the response time is all over the place, sometimes timely (with a few hours) or can take several days. The quality of responses also varies. Sometimes the issue addressed easily, but ofter the support specialist doesn't even seem to read or fully understand the request and they just point you to a self-help article, which is infuriating, they also close out tickets if you don't respond immediately. So they can take several days to respond, but if you don't respond ASAP they will close out your ticket. We always report when we have issues with our Gusto integretion and none of these seem to ever be addressed or responded to.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Helped us offer 401(k) benefit option to our employees

  ### 10. The product is fine, customer service not helpful

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 27, 2024

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

User interface is simple (both for admins and employees). Integration with our payroll system is nice.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

The customer service is bad. Anything non-straightforward is impossible to get meaningful help with. The response times/ability to get in touch with someone has improved, but not much. We should have a designated Account Manager.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

401k benefit is a good thing to offer

**Official Response from Nicole Bliman:**

> Hi there,

Thank you for your feedback. At Betterment, we are always striving to do things better (as our name suggests!). Based on similar feedback from clients like you, we have made several significant improvements we thought you’d like to hear about:

Plan administrators can now schedule a call to speak directly with their support team member. You can find the correct contact information by logging in to your sponsor dashboard at betterment.com/work, selecting Resources in the left-hand nav, then Support.

  ### 11. Fine. It's just fine.

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Architecture & Planning | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 27, 2024

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

- payroll integration
- easy platform on the customer side

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

- customer service takes a long time to respond and doesn't necessarily answer questions on the first try
- employer platform is limited and not as user-friendly as initially thought
- large fees when you need to change your plan minimally
- can't modify contributions outside of payroll (an employee who was on leave wanted to still contribute to their 401k, but was unable to)

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Auto-managing employees' retirmement

  ### 12. Pretty Good Performance, But Don't Ask For Anything Else

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Steve D. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 08, 2023

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Seem to be on top of accounts and trying to make funds yield.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

Everything else. Payroll deduction issues, customer services is very hard to contact. Then once you have their attention, extremely slow to actually doing anything. It took weeks to get them to initiate specific items. We finally closed out our account.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Managing our Safe Harbor plan.
