They are late to file for my end of fiscal year taxes and withholdings. They have been unresponsive for 30 days at a time. Theres no accountability for them either, they lock you into a contract and say good luck. **Recommendations to others considering Bench by Employer.com:** Do not use Bench. They lock you into a contract, forget about you, and don't deliver on the promises they make over the phone. Quickbooks and any other accounting/tax preparation method will be a better option. **What problems is Bench by Employer.com solving and how is that benefiting you?** Bench isn't helping me. They have organized my books, but really they've just provided an interface for me to organize things myself. Aside from categorizing my transactions, they have done nothing else. Really expensive for this type of support, just use quickbooks and give access to an accountant for way less money and way less headache. ### 3. There are months where they show 10 times more revenue than I actually had. Bench wants me to pay more in taxes than I had in income. Bench did not file my business return with NYC on time. When I received notices from the city and asked Bench, they replied that they did not do municipal filings. During my sales onboarding call, we obviously talked about where my business was located and what I did. Furthermore, all my tax documents, s-corp filings are based in NYC. They didn't even advise during the filing because my tax preparer preps taxes in Washington state - he didn't even know about city filings. I asked to file an extension for my personal taxes, which they did, but did not include estimated tax payments before 4/18. Again, I received late payment fees in the hundreds. Bench's response was the same: they don't estimate tax payments. They could have advised their client of these things in advance so we could avoid issues like this but they simply don't care. Look at the list of services they offer and what they don't. You'll see that what they DO offer is marked up google searches and what they DON'T offer is the actual guidance you need from an experienced tax professional. If your return has problems, you will have to eat the penalties. They have made daily tracking of all revenue and expenses simple, easy and accurate for a small business. The interactive platform makes tracking ALL revenue and costs quick and easy, even for multiple projects. Monthly and quarter checks with a team member ensure accuracy. My tax filing is less "taxing" and is less expensive due to Bench's reports at year's end! ### 7. They aren't responsive. They don't do what they say they are going to do. I advised them of my particular needs and they assured me they were able to accommodate. They haven't been able to use any sort of professional judgment in doing the books. For example, even though they did my books for the entire year, they have not been able to quickly categorize many transactions and they require that I categorize them for them. Also, they reply pretty swiftly. **What do you dislike about Bench by Employer.com?** My company has a subsidiary in a foreign country and because of that they couldn't handle the taxes directly so I had to use Taxfyle. I would have prefered to do everything on a single platform. **Recommendations to others considering Bench by Employer.com:** I think Bench can work great if you're a smaller company that doesn't want to spend a fortune and wants accounting done efficiently. **What problems is Bench by Employer.com solving and how is that benefiting you?** Bench is replacing a traditional accountant/tax firm, which are too expensive at my stage given the low volume of transactions we have to deal with. It has really been just a positive for my work and life. I also saw dozens of good reviews about them. I didn't mind bad ones and thought it won't happen to me. But it happened. Let's talk about the service and value I got; It's just bookkeeping software with a guy sitting in front of it. They consistently put my expenses in the wrong category. I had to check all the transactions manually every time. I did this with Xero for less than $40/mo. All transactions from my bank account are automatically imported to Xero and I just need to check once a month. No value here. I didn't mind paying +$200/mo more for the same result since we had no problem with them. I also felt more secure since there is someone on the line. They offered me to file my taxes for an additional fee. I agreed. They filed franchise and corporate taxes for 2020. Everything was smooth and simple. I decided to extend my subscription for another year. Last month, in the middle of tax season, I received an email saying that they will not file my taxes since I am a US non-resident. I respectfully understand that they made some decisions regarding their services. I am totally ok with it, but I should be informed about this in advance. But informing me a few weeks before the deadline, in the middle of tax season, when it's impossible to find an available CPA is a selfish attitude that shows they don't care about their clients. The result is; - I had to pay a late file penalty. - I paid much more for bookkeeping only to AVOID this kind of situation. But this happened. - I had a hard time searching for a CPA, collecting required documents etc. Moreover, they didn't offer me to refund for the amount that I paid for the tax job. I had to ask for it. They refunded it with a small deduction. **What do you like best about Bench by Employer.com?** Nonthing. You can achieve the same result with any bookkeeping service. **What do you dislike about Bench by Employer.com?** Service. I paid more only to have a human backed bookkeeping service to file my taxes. The monthly charge for bookkeeping is minimal compared to the amount of time I spent tracking everything on my own before we switched over. With a direct connection to my bank, they categorize and keep full track of my journal entries and recreated my chart of accounts to make this more logical and organized. **What do you like best about Bench by Employer.com?** Direct bank connection. Automatic categorization, and quick questions and answers if they or I am stuck. **What do you dislike about Bench by Employer.com?** Receipt uploading does not attach to the expense directly in an end of month report, but receipts do attach on another screen. WePay connection is now better - is at least pulling in automatically or someone at Bench is finally doing it. **Recommendations to others considering Bench by Employer.com:** My operation is pretty small, and I could do bookkeeping myself. But it's one more thing to think about. Totally worth the time to having competent, English speaking bookkeepers who I trust. While I recommend them, the biggest issue is hopping on regular calls seems to be annoying to set up. Also, their lack of easy integration into Google Meet or Zoom is fairly annoying. I really wish there was a standing meeting where they would go over the books with you. They also help me prepare my tax return at the end of the year. They also help advise on any tax problem. **What do you like best about Bench by Employer.com?** What I really like about Bench is that it is overall a smooth process for the most part. They have lots of integrations for different sites and apps which makes the process very smooth. You can also ask various questions and they have tax advisors that can help answer any of your questions. Every month we would review the transactions and if they need my input on anything, the process is extremely easy to add my own input as well. Overall, Bench is a good service to use if you need someone to keep track of your transactions while you focus on the bigger picture. **What do you dislike about Bench by Employer.com?** Not much to dislike about Bench. Although the prices are a bit higher than I anticipated, the service is great and feels premium for the most part. If you are ok with their price, then they can offer you a variety of services that can help fit your needs. The person I worked with prior to switching to Bench never allowed any of his clients to get a clear look at their books. It turns out he was embezzling everyone's money. With Bench, I can see what my books look like and where my money is going. I get full transparency into my books. if I have any questions I can text my bookkeeper and I can also set up monthly check-in meetings. I can be involved with my bookkeeping without it being a burden. Your bookkeeper is very easy to contact, and they are more than happy to answer your questions. Bench isn't a faceless company. **What do you dislike about Bench by Employer.com?** I don't like that Bench's pricing isn't adaptive. My company's expenses/revenue fluctuates a lot every month. Bench doesn't automatically change my pricing plan based on the monthly expenses, which is bizarre because they have that information available. I was stuck paying for a higher plan for months until I complained. Thankfully after I complained they happily corrected the problem and gave me discounts. **What problems is Bench by Employer.com solving and how is that benefiting you?** As a small business owner, I took a stab at doing this by myself after my last bookkeeper stole my money. Big mistake. It takes much longer than you are expecting, and you are going to do it wrong. Trust me, focus on running your business and let Bench focus on keeping your books up to date. This year was big for me, so I had a lot of expenses on different credit cards to maximize my cashback rate. Bench did historical bookkeeping for 6 months and is currently doing my ongoing bookkeeping for 2020. **What do you like best about Bench by Employer.com?** The Bench system is simple and intuitive. It's very easy to get in contact with your bookkeeper via chat, phone, or however you like to communicate. They get back to you quickly. The Bench developers have gone above and beyond to make it as easy as possible to use the UI. **What do you dislike about Bench by Employer.com?** Unfortunately, this has confused the bookkeeping team repeatedly, and they keep making rookie mistakes such as listing transactions twice. They've also listed ACH withdrawals for credit card payments as an "expense" when they have already added the actual line transactions on the credit card as an expense. I turned to Bench to have another second set of eyes on my bookkeeping so I didn't have to bear the burden alone, but sadly I don't feel confident in my Bench bookkeeping team. I feel overwhelmed and like I have to babysit them and catch their mistakes. Yes, it's great for a business owner to be involved in their bookkeeping and make sure they stay updated with what's happening, but we should not have to continually worry about the accuracy of our books when we're paying hundreds per year to have it done for us. **Recommendations to others considering Bench by Employer.com:** Only use Bench if your bookkeeping requirements are EXTREMELY simple - like one business credit card and one business checking account. The free month isn't really free...they do a month for you as part of a demo, but in our case it wasn't helpful because we had to go back and clean up 2019 THEN do 2020. It's not quite the same as getting a free month with no service fees. They looked at all our current and past expenses and helped us get an overview that showed us where we are spending too much money, where we are making the most money, and tax breaks we had never thought of . **What do you like best about Bench by Employer.com?** My favorite feature of bench is how great their on-boarding team is. I know they are sales people and their job is to sell you on their product, but my initial call was very polite and not pushy at all. She simply helped me get started. All the team members you speak to after that are just as knowledgeable and nice to speak to. Other favorites: - easy tag system for transactions - able to comment and correct what the bench bookkeeper has done for you - great overview and explanation of your business finances - taught me how to understand “money in transit” - you can prepay for a whole year and get their discounted price and then you can quit anytime and get the amount you overpaid refunded! That says a lot about how much they believe in their product. Best part? It helped us get a grip on our project finances and get our project back on track for 2020.No, I take it back. Best part is that unlike quickbooks or wave - someone does it for you 😂 **What do you dislike about Bench by Employer.com?** Although it is pretty easy to understand and the dashboard is straightforward, it can still be a little difficult to understand what the number mean for your business (if you were not a business major.. I was an art major). I was also a little disheartened to hear that the bookkeepers are actually just regular people who take a 4 week certifications class. Then again, a program like wave can do it without a human at all - so why would it require much more training? All they are doing is data input so I can understand why they are not using accountants for this. **Recommendations to others considering Bench by Employer.com:** I would recommend that you don’t think of it as an added expense to your budget, but rather than you see it as an opportunity to save. And to make more money. Because the less time you spend looking over business finances - the more time you can spend making more money. Also, doing bookkeeping is not optional when running a business. It is important for so many reasons, least of all if the IRS comes knocking. This is a way to do bookkeeping while keeping the costs down and results up. **What problems is Bench by Employer.com solving and how is that benefiting you?** Doing accounting and bookkeeping is a headache. In our organization, we try to delegate this to every project leader like myself to do for each project and then hand in at the end of the project or quarter for analysis. I am not good at accounting or bookkeeping and it shows. In order to be able to focus on my job - I need someone to take care of the math for me. And that is what bench does! A benefit is that come tax time you don’t have to pay a ton of money for a CPA to go through your badly written google sheets. You can hire bench to do your taxes as well. Bench simplified everything. Having the ability to email receipts and invoices directly to them or message them through the app about everything and anything book keeping related is great. **What do you like best about Bench by Employer.com?** The ease of using Bench is a big highlight for me but I think how nice and professional everyone I have worked with at Bench they make you feel like their only client. **What do you dislike about Bench by Employer.com?** I wish it were easier to tag and categorize certain transactions for my own records. **Recommendations to others considering Bench by Employer.com:** I would use their trial period first to make sure they fit within your needs. They worked for me and I'm so happy I joined **What problems is Bench by Employer.com solving and how is that benefiting you?** In the past I had to sit and myself and go through all my transactions and try and match them up and the more I pushed it off the harder it became. Bench does this every month makes it super easy, any questions they have, they'll just message you in the app and you can answer. It really makes tax season simpler. **What do you dislike about Bench by Employer.com?** There are no totals at the bottom of the columns. For example if I want to pull up a figure on how much I made from VRBO or Air BnB payments, I type in VRBO, all of the transaction come up but I have to hand total them myself. It would be nice if there was a way to get a quick total on anything I pull up. **Recommendations to others considering Bench by Employer.com:** I have all ready recommended the service to others. **What problems is Bench by Employer.com solving and how is that benefiting you?** I don't have to drop off a box of paperwork to a bookkeeper for them to go through and categorize.
