Local compilation mode is faster and has more options such as working with the emulator, USB debugging, unattended installations and others. It uses a variant of Basic called B4X, and if you understand Basic or Visual Basic you will feel right at home with this IDE. It does exactly what it says it does, which is essential when looking for software. It is mainly designed for building Android applications, but it does support iOS and even writing programs for Raspberry Pi, which gives it some versatility. **What do you dislike about Basic4android (B4A)?** For software that uses a language designed to be easy to use, setting up the software was a little bit of a hassle at first, it's not as intuitive as it should be if you're trying to get it up and running. If you use more conventional IDEs like Eclipse or Android Studio you probably would instead turn to those than trying to get this up and running, but once you get past that it's not hard to find your way around it. I didn't like how much I had to look at the provided documentation while initially learning this IDE, but most things have a bit of a learning curve. **What problems is Basic4android (B4A) solving and how is that benefiting you?** It is offering an alternative to more widely used IDE's, which use languages such as Java and Kotlin. This one uses a variant of Basic, which can also be used in developing Windows Applications which might help developers who are experienced with writing VB scripts to port over their own scripts or write new ones for use on Android devices. It benefits me because I try to keep up with new and old technologies as a designer and developer, and knowing software that can let me tackle challenges in different ways is essential. ### 2. It converts my Java bytecode into Android runtime code during compilation itself which is useful and time-saving for me. When I work with large projects, it allows me to implement incremental compilation in which I can append libraries and dependencies as required. **What do you dislike about Basic4android (B4A)?** Basic4android is excellent for native android applications written with Java. Its light-weight and the size of the app is only around 100 KB. I once faced difficulty in initializing my application, I contacted its support team. They analyzed my error on app startup and they suggested me to install the latest version of .Net Framework which effectively resolved my issue. **What problems is Basic4android (B4A) solving and how is that benefiting you?** I primarily work with Java code in which I need to reuse my existing code & tweak a few modifications to develop Android apps for my clients. Basic4android platform allows me to wrap my Java code as a library so that it can be easily referenced many times from its IDE. It also helps me handle Application Not Responding (ANR) issue which is quite common while working with all Android apps. Basic4android ensures to run my code on the main thread so that ANR is not recurring in my applications. ### 4. It is open source software. It has a wide community of users, so there is a lot of interesting documentation for the development of different apps. In addition, Visual Basic and B4A are very similar programming languages, so the learning curve was very short since I am very fluent in that language. **What do you dislike about Basic4android (B4A)?** I find it unfortunate that it allows you to develop apps for Android and iOS, but you can only install the software on Windows. **Recommendations to others considering Basic4android (B4A):** If you master Visual Basic, you will find that B4A is the same. This IDE is easy to use and install. In addition, it has extensive documentation.
