The interface is not the most sleek. Admin cannot delete Campfire posts from individuals who have been deleted/removed from Basecamp. This saved me time throughout the course of a project. Sharing files was also helpful. **What do you dislike about Basecamp?** I feel like there are a lot of other more robust project management tools out there like Asana that offer more features and project tracking options. Basecamp is the bare minimum. **What problems is Basecamp solving and how is that benefiting you?** Team communication is helpful via this tool. However, overall project tracking isn’t the best. We are able to communicate very well, though. We used the software in collaboration with a website developer while working on a web design project. ### 3. You will receive multiple notifications to review all documents. You cannot have one working document within Basecamp for others to review and modify. **Recommendations to others considering Basecamp:** Depending on how you would like to use it, you may want to consider other options. I would have liked it to be more integrated with my calendar for reminders, etc. **What problems is Basecamp solving and how is that benefiting you?** We solved the ability to be able to "post" to-do things we needed others to do or help with, we were able to use it to share files, etc. It really allowed us to collaborate without having to do everything through email. It was nice to have one place to go and see everything related to the event we were organizing. ### 7. It is pretty good nonetheless, however, there are the downfalls as there always are. At Retro Host LLC we used Basecamp before switching over to Trello for a few reasons which can be found in another section of this review. Back to what I like best about Basecamp, it has a clean design, a fast website, and it is fairly easy to use. I like how we, at Retro Host LLC, are able to create teams and certain projects and have people added to those teams or projects. This allows for easier project organization and overall management of the entire plan. This allows us as a team at Retro Host to get together for an online group chat and allows us to talk with other co-workers who are online which is extremely handy. I also love the feature where I can link Basecamp with my calendars. **What do you dislike about Basecamp?** To be honest, the biggest downside of Basecamp from me, as well as I am sure many others at Retro Host, is the $99 per month charge. That is just absurd pricing. Everything today is becoming a subscription model payment, but it feels like a lot of businesses do not know how to properly price for monthly, or just get greedy and upcharge to no tomorrow. For something like this, I would not even pay anything more than $30 a month, especially with Basecamp. I wish it had a better design for it, though the one now is nice, it could be much better. At least some improvement. Also, it is not really the best for assigning members to teams in my opinion and requires you to load into each project or team to see everything inside making it a bit lengthy of a process. **Recommendations to others considering Basecamp:** Personally the best that I can do for those considering Basecamp is to do lots of research for finding the best one that you like but also one that meets your needs to the fullest. I personally prefer Trello, though there are some things missing from that which I can get using Basecamp. Just make sure to look into all of the other options before spending $99 a month! **What problems is Basecamp solving and how is that benefiting you?** As a company, Basecamp allows us to be much more productive, keep track of everything, and keep everything organized. We can build a forum-like system and integrate it into Retro Host LLC as a sales team to allow us all to collaborate and give our feedback. Despite my dislikes about Basecamp, we also were saving much more money by using it over some of the other project management sites that tend to charge hundreds. ### 9. You can keep track of company policies, white papers, one pagers, and things like that, but don't see the value other than that. It's a great tool for us because half the team is in Pakistan while the other team is in Seattle. **What do you dislike about Basecamp?** I don't find enough value personally using Basecamp. It seems to be a platform mainly to keep track of ideas, share one pagers, six pagers of potential projects coming up, and company documents that you need. **What problems is Basecamp solving and how is that benefiting you?** I guess Basecamp helps everyone at the organization on the same page with what's going on with the company. You are able to see what projects are happening and see comments. The benefit is to see what projects other teams are doing and the ability to share your input to their thoughts to hash the idea out even deeper. ### 10. Each person get to track the progress on other peoples task. I also like that you are able to make a due date. It alerts your supervisors when you are overdue for a project. You can transfer job tasks to other people as well. **What do you dislike about Basecamp?** I do not like that you cannot put individual tasks on basecamp to make milestones. It would be nice to have sub checkpoints on your task list. **Recommendations to others considering Basecamp:** I would use this project when assigning multiple task to people in your workplace. It helps give clarity to tasks and allows others to see your progress and when they need to step in an help. I also reccomend syncincg your calendar with due dates, it goes along way when organizing things with the calendar. Overall I would rate this 4.5 stars. It has many good avenues, but you will run into some kinks when going on the modile site. **What problems is Basecamp solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are using this across multiple churches to help with organizing large events so that people can work remotely without having to meet on a regular basis to keep up with their work. I really enjoy that aspect. The other things that I enjoy are that you can right notes. Such as task lists for each project - renderings of products or marketing materials we are working on, etc. **What do you dislike about Basecamp?** Everything in Basecamp is confusing. I am young and consider myself to be a pretty tech savvy person, and even with training specifically for this application, I am constantly confused. I get lost on the web interface - I'll get into a specific project and not be able to find what I'm looking for. The message board between the collaborators often slows down the process more than it helps. **Recommendations to others considering Basecamp:** Basecamp is great if you are a company/organization with multiple projects happening frequently and all at once. It is great for streamlining the flow of projects. I have found that sometimes the Basecamp process slows down the project or confuses things more than it helps. Because everything needs to be recorded and documented and that takes a lot of time to navigate the interface to find what you need, to upload what needs to be documented when you could just move forward. **What problems is Basecamp solving and how is that benefiting you?** I understand what the purpose of Basecamp is and the value of having a process for projects in our organization. It does give you quite a bit of "extras" compared to other project management programs, and it is also fairly easy to learn how to use - no training needed. **What do you dislike about Basecamp?** The user experience/design for Basecamp seems to be lacking in my opinion. It can get messy pretty quickly if you don't have a company-wide process for creating projects, lists, and communicating. I often find myself having to scroll back extensively to find work, project updates, and to-dos. It is possible that we just aren't using it effectively, but we ave had better luck with other programs. **Recommendations to others considering Basecamp:** Have a documented process for how you want to use Basecamp - otherwise, it can easily become messy and disorganized. **What problems is Basecamp solving and how is that benefiting you?** Basecamp did help us work with an outside vendor on a few large-scale projects without having to share our other work with them. It was pretty easy for them to invite our profiles onto their "Basecamp" and for us to then communicate and keep track of deliverables on a shared basis. ### 14. The due dates and archived lists help you look back on what has already been done to use for events that are reoccurring each year. I like the ability to assign roles to different members and having different groups of basecamp based on their assigned roles and tasks. **What do you dislike about Basecamp?** Unable to color coordinate projects. Readability could be better on the app. It needs a little bit of a makeover on the front end **Recommendations to others considering Basecamp:** It is great for a company that has a large team or a small team. It minimizes confusion when it comes to project timelines and responsibilities. The email reminders are helpful too. They help you keep on track with your own deadlines! The chat function is nice too for someone who isn't always checking on their emails all day long. Uploading documents is helpul for all members of the team to see and write their own thoughts without bogging down an email chain of 5+ people. I highly reccomend this product to people looking to automate their projects and team collaborations, especially those working in higher education. We even use this product with a third party marketing firm for their media buys with our company. We are able to communicate to outside members of the University thanks to basecamp! **What problems is Basecamp solving and how is that benefiting you?** Workflow organization. The benefits of timelines and due dates are so essential for keeping our interns on track with us. ### 15. As a company, I really like who they are and their tech support team is always great. I think that basecamp can work well for people who are not ready for a more robust project management tool and is really a great asset for a non-profit team where people tend to be less than project managers, but more than volunteers. In fact, I can only think of a few systems that would be as helpful in working with people who are not tech savvy. The way that it is set up is very approachable for users of all technical abilities. **What do you dislike about Basecamp?** There are just a lot of other programs out there that are more user-friendly. I get why they kept older versions in place (like Basecamp II) but they are so clunky, it gives the impression that they are behind the tech pretty substantially. **Recommendations to others considering Basecamp:** If you have users who are not very tech savvy, Basecamp 2 can be the perfect solution for you! **What problems is Basecamp solving and how is that benefiting you?** I like the email notifications and how you can select who will be notified each time instead of blanket notifications to the same group automatically. I think this is one of their absolute best features. I appreciate that you can create various checklists and assign responsibilities within those checklists. It's simplicity and ease of use makes it a good alternative to more robust, but complicated, project management applications. **What do you dislike about Basecamp?** The fact that Basecamp is simple and easy to use also means that its use may be limited to projects that don't have extensive detailed project management requirements. If you need extensive resource allocation, interdependency, and reporting requirements, it may not be the most effective solution. I also like that Basecamp sends me daily updates of all the activity that has happened the day prior. This helps keep me up to speed, and assures I don't miss anything. I also like that people can be assigned to specific tasks, and mark them off for themselves when the task is complete. **What do you dislike about Basecamp?** I dislike how many pathways there are in Basecamp. Each section (documents, conversations, to-do lists) is closed off, and this makes it difficult to see everything at once. If I have a to-do that tells me I need to upload a file, I must exit the "to do" section and enter the "documents" section in order to check, and then return to the previous section in order to complete my to-do list. There is no ease of access between sections in basecamp, no shortcuts. Everything must be accessed from the homepage. **Recommendations to others considering Basecamp:** This is a great software to accommodate a large number of employees or people working together on a project. **What problems is Basecamp solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are solving the problem of people being left out or unaware of details and expectations. It feels like you really own your projects and what happens with them. It can be as powerful and as useful as you make it. **What do you dislike about Basecamp?** The actual usefulness besides just sending messages and files is really limited for the price. There are other programs that do more than just offer a hub for your projects. You can't do live edits or other in-depth project management besides sending messages and files and scheduling things. It also feels very fragile, like it's going to break at any moment. **Recommendations to others considering Basecamp:** Do your research. There are hundreds of similar tools tailored to specific needs. If you can find something that matches what you do better, go with that one. **What problems is Basecamp solving and how is that benefiting you?** Team communication, making sure that the latest version of any given document is the one everyone is using, communicating with clients and documenting client messages and versions of final deliverables that they need to review. ### 19. It gives you access to the main picture but it also allows you to keep track of your tasks. **What do you dislike about Basecamp?** They send an email at the end of the day that is redundant. The email says "What did you work on today?" I asked my director if we needed to take action upon receiving the email, and he said we could just ignore it because we've been updating the tasks throughout the day. **Recommendations to others considering Basecamp:** It's a daily tool, remember to keep it updated at all times. Otherwise, it's useless. If the goal is to put everyone "on the same page", keep it updated and remember to add everyone involved in the project. **What problems is Basecamp solving and how is that benefiting you?** I am not solving a problem in particular, because I've always kept track of my assignments. If you have a to-do list, make sure to add team members to each individual task as well. It allows users to choose whether to manage workflows on the platform or by email replies, which is helpful for empowering customers and employees to choose a workflow that works for them. **What do you dislike about Basecamp?** It looks like an outdated forum, and it has fewer custom/advanced capabilities than its competitors. If it's not set up well or if you're onboarding a new partner, then it can be confusing to easily explain where everything lives. My team of 5 has used various tools to track and communicate progress on a project do every year and the first year we used basecamp was the first year everyone used the tool. Other tools before had noticeably lower adoption. I like that you can have a series of comments hanging off of any object - (to-do, document) so all relevant discussion is one place for easy reference in the future. I like that @ referencing people in-line is fast and easy (just type @ and start typing the name, it finds it in 3-4 characters with zero lag.) I like the casual, accessable language (e.g. "My Stuff", and "Hey!") Like that you can reply to email notifications without leaving the email client and your response will still post back to the system. **What do you dislike about Basecamp?** Its strength is also its weakness. The simplicity makes it too limited. For example, we are using it to assign and track tasks on a very large CRM implementation. We have hundreds of tasks in the "to-do's" module, organized into lists for various areas of the project. It's easy to create these, but much harder to find them later. There is a good global search, with filtering, but you have to remember what someone called it, or what list they put it in to search for it. Most people on the team can't find a to-do after some time has passed. If there was even one more field available on the to-do record, we could group and categorize to-dos and filter on them that way. It's not a great way to share documents for collaborative editing. You have to attach files (or link to them in google docs or other web-based doc sharing) Our org uses announcements to communicate to everyone. It gets over-used and people start to tune them out. This is not the fault of the software, but it is what has happened. We are still email-centric, so your first encounter of a basecamp item is usually from email. I'd love it if I could get a quick glance of the content so I can know if I need to take action right away or not.
