What do you like best?

Multiplatform support, easy usability, helpful support team.

The service team is really helpful, fast and very knowledgeable about the platform. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

There is no mobile app, the web interface is not very responsive.

The web interface still leaves a little to be desired, however it is not something that really hinders the performance of backup functions. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

A tool is extremely robust, it is adjustable for environments of any size, from a small business to a large industry.

There are several plugins that encompass practically the entire IT infrastructure.

However, there is a need for the administrator of the tool to have notions of backup policy as, without this, he will not be able to get more out of the tool Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Backup of vmware environment, backup of unstructured files, guarantee of disaster recovery.

There was also the resolution of losses of virtual machines, since bacula's bare-metal backup solution is extremely effective Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

Bacula Enterprise is a an excellent system. It ishighly configurable, does exactly what you ask of it, and importantly for me, it works in the way you would expect. I like systems where I can think to myself, how would that work best, and then I find out that Bacula does it that way.

The support has always been extremely helpful. We don’t need it often, but when we do, again, we get just the right answers to walk us through the tricky things. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

There is no native way to deal with zfs send / receive streams. It can be handled with scripts, which is what we do, and if the system supports it (our current one does not) then NDMP would be an option. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Bacula looks after close to 0.5 PB of our data sending it to tape on a regular basis. These are, for the most part, things which we simply cannot lose. We can do without them for a bit, but they must not be lost. With Bacula we have full confidence that our data is safe. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

Bacula has been around for more than 20 years, and its developers therefore have encountered - and dealt with - every conceivable edge case, from weird filesystems and hardware to the most specific business requirements and schedules. They've solved problems most competitors don't even know exist.

Their support staff is hypercompetent -- everyone I have worked with is a deep subject matter expert and if they didn't write the actual code, they know who did - and can talk to them immediately. They never "just try to close the ticket' - they spend as much time and effort as it takes to actually solve not just the problem you state, but really think about what you're asking and realize if it's an "XY problem" and address the REAL problem. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

The only thing I dislike is that Bacula is a bit behind the times in terms of how it stores backups. It still behaves as if everything is a tape - disk-based backups simply pretend that your disk is a bunch of tapes, and (on some operating systems) doesn't always use modern features like snapshots or make full use of deduplication to avoid making many copies of identical data. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Bacula is not the easiest backup software to work with - you are expected to be competent at the command line and editing complex configuration files, even if you mostly use the web GUI for day to day operations. However, study is rewarded - you can do many very complex things. Easy things may not always be easy, but very hard things are POSSIBLE - unlike many competitors that make easy things easy and hard things impossible. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We back up ~50 clients and ~1.5 PB to a mix of disk and LTO7 tape. Paying for Bacula Enterprise - rather than using the free open source version - gets us support which has several times been invaluable and easily paid for itself in terms of productivity and not-lost-data. What do you like best?

Bacula enterprise works really well and beats just about every other package available

The use of a file database and checksums allows IDS-style checks on file changes which greatly speeds up restores and enhances security Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

There is a major memory leak in the director component which when triggered will result in failure of ALL backups large enough to use the "spooling" function

This leak is triggered because the client does not pause sending data to the director when the director is despooling data to tape. This may or may not cause an "in-progress backup" to fail after several hundred GB. Once triggered virtually all backups fail until the backup server platform is rebooted

Because of the leak - and because it is not fixed 6 YEARS after notfying it to bacula - and because bacula staff refused to even acknowledge the issue as important for most of that period

I CANNOT RECOMMEND BACULA FOR NEW INSTALLATIONS Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Bacula solved our myriad backup issues - apart from this memory leak which started manifesting on larger jobs Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

Incredible flexibility! It's a modular, easily scalable architecture with a clear division of functionality, data and interaction with the system.

Once set up, you can forget and not touch. The system will work like a charm. Simple and straightforward backup and restore procedure. You can easily make backups of anything: servers, clusters, databases, user data. And all this will be centrally controlled. Wow!

The support team are awsome! For example, when we found out that we did not have an installation file for old FreeBSD systems - we asked the Bacula development team about it. And practically in a few days they made an installer for us.

BWeb Management Suite helps to do you daily deals, saves your time and simplifies the use of the backup system - intuitive and easy to use. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Not easy entry threshold for beginners.

Despite the many free additional plugins, there are still many paid ones (Bare-metal recovery, Oracle Database plugin, MS VSS and other). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

It is fair to say that not every product has all of these features!

It is also fair to say that a separate employee is needed to fully customize and implement all amazing Bacula functionality. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Centralized control and management of backup of the entire system in distributed systems of any complexity.

The ability to execute scripts during the backup process.

Work on mixed systems - UNIX-like, Linux, and Windows.

Working with multiple tape storage devices.

Encryption of network traffic as well as backup data.

Automation and unification of backup and recovery processes for information stored in information systems. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

It support a big variety of systems.

It works better from any other backup solution that i have tried with Netapp nfs shares.

Bacula support team it respond very quick.

On our case they customized a plugin in a very reasonable time.

The support help me quick with every questions i have. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

You need a long of time to learn and understand the Bacula system even there is a lot of documentation.

It is a system that support a variety of products and you need a lot of time to learn and customize the backups. ( support help me a lot with that).

They need to work more with Bweb in our case with a huge amount of files we must use bconsole for files recovery. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

It a very good Backup Solution Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Bacula works well with a very big nfs share with the hfc plugin we can take incremental backups very quick.

We have tried a lot of backup solution and Bacula was the only solution that take our incremental backups in a very good amount of time. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

It is widely customisable. Even if there is no feature available for a particular need, it is possible workaround using scripts. This opens the range of options mainly for environments full of complex requirements.

The technical support are always available to help you without questioning whether what is happening is really a problem or not. They consider all suggestions. They point out to the correct document when it is needed.

As an Open Source system, there are plenty of information on internet. Also, many forums with people available to help. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Learning curve. It is necessary long time (weeks) studying and testing as much as you can to get a good understanding of the system. The course helps, but the person needs to work hard too.

When you are not comfortable with the system, is hard to find the proper documentation.

BWEB could use the normal config files instead of change the folders and files structure. It becomes harder to cross check configurations files with web options. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

It is one of the best cost benefits in the market. If not the best.

You have an repository available with all packages necessary to install and maintain the system. Also there are documentation for specific use cases.

Their support team is really helpful. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am backing up three Netapp clusters.

One is 2.5PB and other two around 50TB each

What do you like best?

- Bacula is a really powerful backup tool.

- Meets all required standards and allows growth without limitations.

- The enterprise version has a large number of plugins to centralize all technologies.

- Possibility to deduplicate in community version.

- The global deduplication (GED) in enterprise version is excellent, it greatly reduces the need for storage.

- The support in the enterprise version is excellent, always predisposed and collaborative to solve and investigate complex problems. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

- Maybe the learning curve is greater in the initial stage than other tools, but then having the basic knowledge can practically achieve anything Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

As official partners and consultants we have supported numerous organizations to solve their backup scheme, whether local, cloud or offsite.

Bacula adapts to every need, allowing it to grow, providing cross-platform compatibility and the possibility of having its main components (focus on storage daemon) on separate servers. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

There are quite a few things I like about Bacula Enterprise: First, it works. When I need to restore files, they are there and I can get them back without having that "I hope this works" panic. Second, I like that I can install backup agents on as many machines as I want without having to pay "per device". Finally, I like the support that Bacula Enterprise provides. There are community supported Bacula editions, but having Bacula Enterprise behind me means my backups work exactly as expected, and if they don't I have a responsive and professional support team that is familiar with my particular setup to get me up and working again. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Bacula Enterprise provides access to lots of documentation. LOTS of documentation. My biggest problem with Bacula Enterprise is that if I attempt something on my own I have to find the correct release notes, white paper, and/or instruction manual to get the whole story. I'm happy that Bacula Enterprise produces all this documentation but I do wish they would streamline it some. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Take the Bacula Enterprise training. I'm not sure I could have figured everything out if I didn't. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I use Bacula Enterprise to back up all our physical servers, virtual machines, and databases. We use a mix of file-by-file backups and complete image backups, and this mix gives me the ability to restore just what I need restored. Aside from the obvious benefits of restoring deleted or damaged files, Bacula Enterprise's job querying abilities have helped me find files and folders that were accidentally moved to the wrong place in our folder structure. What do you like best?

I enjoyed this online learning because it was extremely flexible. We got enough breaks in between and time to ask questions during the training.

The best part of this training was the .ova files that were produced and shared by Bacula Training Team with all the needed packages/configurations etc. That then went well with the slides being taught.

I like the concept of Bacula Slides and Manuals being sent out with other goodies. The manual had lots real case study scenarios as well. I always like to hold on to something physical at the end of training as it helps marking important sections and taking notes. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

It is difficult to get to know people on line rather than in person. I think we will get used to it with more online training classes been made available; however it won't be such a big deal later.

Sometimes its too much work, not enough time to do it all with your BAU work as well after your training ends. If there are immediate work related tickets/emails to respond then it becomes hard managing time. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Depending on the licensing and usage, one should really test out Bacula Enterprise. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Bacula is making possible to backup our clients without any client software by using NFS or Samba etc and it can handle multi volume backups.

After the initial configuration, it was thoroughly hands-off until everything was upgraded for the newer release. It did its job and was easy to audit and restore files.

Support is top notch - any time we have an issue we can generally get them resolved within a day of the first reply on the ticket.

Tons of supported operating systems for installation - this allows us more flexibility with the workloads that we run and back up in our infrastructure. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Setting up the tape drives was a bit of a headache, as well as making the storage pool determinations - however Bacula support was there every step of the way to help bring expertise to the discussion. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

- The deduplication engine included is really powerful and easy to work with! It's inline, no need to wait for the deduplication to "compress" your data. It's really integrated, that you can copy data from bacula's storage servers (storage daemon) very quickly... because it can take advantage on the deduplicated data that are already present on the destination node.

- The many possibilities that we have regarding configuration options.

For example: Let say you want to skip particular filesystems? Just exclude the filesystems based on an OS script.

- The support team Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

The web interface is just "ok". When you are used to, it do the work. But it's not as user friendly as competitive product i had the opportunity to work with.

- It's ok to configure backup. But if you want something very specific, you'll have to read the whitepapers and edit manually the configuration files. It will be easier and quicker.

- it's lacks some reporting features i like to see (what are the client with the worst dedup ratio? i lack a report card, showing in a structured way all my backup jobs and the status of the last run). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Thanks to the deduplication included in our licence, we don't have to buy a dedicated appliance. So we can store all our daily backups and replicate them quickly to a remote location. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

Bacula is really awesome. It's relatively quick to backup things and I like the backups based on jobs. The compression is okayish. I like the storing as binary and choosing the volumes also it's nice that you guys made a small php dashboard for it Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Well the fact that it doesnt have an API is problematic. So I had to develop my own api to use bacula. The learning curve is quite high. I spent like 3 weeks full time to understand it well but once you master it it's really cool Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Well currently I am not working with bacula. I stopped last year as I moved to a new company. But I remember that before I set it up we used to do rsync everywhere for backups. With bacula the backup and restore are way better also I loved the fact the the storage server and the bacula server were separate so I could do a datacebter migration really efficiently by first only creating one storage server in the new dc and then add some vms to the new dc and still keep the same bacula server on the old dc orchestrating everything Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

I like the configurability. You can pretty much make Bacula do anything you would like. I like it because it's very extensible and can be used for customizing a mid-level enterprise. The Enterprise edition is quite advantageous than the Community edition. Even though the trial version gives you all access to try Enterprise Edition version 8 features, VSS plugin, BWeb Management Suite etc. It'll make you want to buy for service unlike Bare-os which started initially as a fork of Bacula is being considered as a better alternative to Enterprise edition Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
