It makes us immediately aware that our setup has become compromised in any way that does not correspond to our provided security templates, in any configuration that may go on to cause a problem. To give an example, it recently alerted us to a minor ACL change on a key router which passed our change control and we were able to roll it back. Such watchfulness brings us so much peace. **What do you dislike about BackBox?** In its generality, the reporting features may be more granular in customization options with respect to specific audit requests. Sometimes deployments of bigger scripts on hundreds of devices may take too long to implement in parallel which may not be optimal. It was more of a steep learning curve so that our junior staff could tap into the maximum capability of its scripting language at the beginning. **What problems is BackBox solving and how is that benefiting you?** The biggest difficulty we faced was in ensuring a uniform security posture of all our heterogeneous network devices without manually intervening it on a continual basis. We had issues keeping all our firewalls, switches and routers, to comply with our latest hardening instructions. We have an automated process that keeps everything aligned and instead of having to manually backup configurations or getting tripped up by not having something in the particular timeframe, it saves that work. This cuts out human error and prevents our security policies from being tampered with. It has also come in handy due to the ability to instantly escape to a previous configuration when unexpected issues arise, which saves for hours of troubleshooting. **What do you dislike about BackBox?** The main frustrating part about BackBox is that when it can’t backup the same way across vendors sometimes a restore gets complicated. Things have slowed us down since we’ve had to spend extra time making sure the settings are applied correctly. We can quickly restore configurations and services will run. It also makes sure all network devices follow the same rules so that the change of policies can’t create a security gap in programming. It integrates really well with our other network management tools and we don’t now need to manually track or schedule any backups. One thing we’ve realized is that we can now do strategic things and let automation handle the mundane backup work. Additionally, it’s nice to be able to monitor everything you have in all in one centralised dashboard. **What do you dislike about BackBox?** There are some problems with BackBox, and one of these is of the setup type, which may take time to get through especially for those with little knowledge on network backup. The documentation is rather slightly confused at some points so that the persons who are going to use the application for the first time will have some problems to get started. When the passwords for devices are rolled over for security reasons, there is only a single location for updating these passwords within Backbox. Backbox supports a large number of products that are being run. Not only the Cisco networking equipment, but Check Point firewalls, Cisco Firewalls, FortiGate firewalls, and Cisco Unified Communication software such as Call Manager and UCCE. The ability to view the backups, meaning that you can pull specific lines of configuration out of an old backup, and use that to revert configuration that has changed, or alternatively as a base template for either replacement or additional devices. The Backup retention is a useful feature that allows a larger amount of granularity when reverting config changes - If the config has changed a while ago, and only just been picked up, the solution allows us to revert to an older copy, before the config change was made. The scheduling allows tiers of devices to be backed up on different schedules. **What do you dislike about BackBox?** Although the Interface was originally clunky, in the older versions, the interface in the newer versions is much more usable. Some products require pushing backups to BackBox, as opposed to BackBox pulling the backup from the appliance, meaning that it relies on the backup configuration of the appliance itself. This works against the idea of having backup configurations in a single location, and means that you have to ensure that all the appliances are configured correctly.
