I appreciate how it solves the tribal-knowledge problem by automating configuration backups and formalizing rule-set changes, which means changes are no longer reliant on one person. It maintains an accurate log of every configuration change, providing a safety net for our team and allowing newer technicians to handle tricky tasks confidently. I love the platform's feature that checks syntax and confirms rule changes are sound before they're implemented, reducing guesswork and allowing experienced team members to delegate tasks without close supervision. The change log is a reliable reference for tracing or rolling back any alteration, and the rule checks ensure invalid changes are caught before reaching live devices. Its platform offers an extremely reliable way to schedule and run automated configuration backups for an almost unlimited number of network and security vendors at once. Its one window view enables us to have visibility across our entire global infrastructure from one pane of glass. The automatic validation is greatly appreciated, as it ensures that all saved configuration files are uncorrupted and fully usable for immediate restoration, in case of system failure. The initial setup is very complex and involves lots of manual scripting to set up custom backup hook for non-standard legacy hardware. The internal alerting system does not allow us to filter the alerts very granularly - which is creating us a lot of annoyance in the form of repetitive notification e-mails for minor non critical events. The log viewing interface seems very cumbersome and slow to navigate when encountered with failed automation tasks and a tight timeline to troubleshoot the logs. I like that BackBox is web-based, making it simple to use and easy to add and manage devices along with their configurations. It's valuable because even a novice can use it with just a bit networking experience. I also appreciate their technical support which is very hands-on and helpful. I would like to see Backbox continue to mature toward a full configuration management across common network and security device types. While Backbox is very strong in back and very basic config management, there is a gap when it comes to declarative, repeatable configuration management at scale. I'd like to see functionality found in Ansible and Terraform which allows me to define desires config state, manage config drift, and apply consistent conf across many devices.
