I use it on-prem, so being able to use it in Azure provides commonality for me. It is managed so it takes that burden away from me. It performs well, can have read-replicas, so all is good. Priced reasonably and for those that only need what it offers, is a great way to save money over the alternatives like Managed SQL Server or Azure SQL, or even something like Oracle. While MySQL would be a similar option, I find I prefer PostgreSQL to MySQL for a number of reasons. **What do you dislike about Azure Database for PostgreSQL?** Working with clusters is not as seamless as AWS's Aurora/PostgreSQL. There is a Hyperscale (Citus) option but it is quite pricey. Something that auto-fails over to the read-replica that gets promoted to the writer would be nice. Microsoft obviously prefers their many SQL Server offerings and so invests more there, and while that is expected, it would be nice if more was done on PostgreSQL, but that would make it more competitive with the SQL Server options. **What problems is Azure Database for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?** Providing SaaS for my application using the same components as on-prem. No need to port to another DB or learn the intricacies of another, I can just use the support my application already has. Application is a traditional RDBMS application with reasonably high transaction volumes. Customers increasingly want to have our software provided as Software as a Service and while we started on AWS, we have demand to offer it on Azure as well and the PostgreSQL support eases the migration. What we are after is a standard RDBMS and use Aurora/PostgreSQL in AWS which provides HA with scale out readers that can be promoted to writer on the event the writer fails. ### 3. The pricing model for the Azure SQL database has great flexibility. You're able to pick what functionality your company needs at different pricing tiers. The ability to scale is fantastic in this database. You're able to scale up during busier times and scale down to a lower tier when you're not as busy. You're also able to use different open source frameworks and languages that support your companies application development needs. **What do you dislike about Azure Database for PostgreSQL?** You cannot easily migrate apps from an on premise solution to this database without altering the back end code. It seems like a regular SQL server however it is not. **Recommendations to others considering Azure Database for PostgreSQL:** If trying to shift from an on premise solution the Azure Database is not the way to go. The coding involved in this migration will be difficult. **What problems is Azure Database for PostgreSQL solving and how is that benefiting you?** The cloud location allows for data access anywhere and developers are able to build databases and apps at the same time. ### 4. PostgreSQL is open source making it an easy choice for many researchers or low budget development. It is one of the most advanced databases, and has for sure stood the test of time. It has a great community that supports and maintains its integrity. Azure Database for PostgreSQL is simply the deployment of PostgreSQL database on the Azure cloud. It's as simple as logging onto the Azure database portal and creating a new PostgreSQL database instance. You can add database owners, and set up security procedures for your database. **What do you dislike about Azure Database for PostgreSQL?** PostgreSQL is a relational database, and if you are storing data as documents or objects it might be more efficient performance-wise to use a No SQL database such as MongoDB. **Recommendations to others considering Azure Database for PostgreSQL:** Do some research before hand to decide if PostgreSQL meets your business need, then choose a scalable cloud infrastructure.
