Jobs begin in the AWS Management Console, when a device (or devices) are shipped to your designated site to be filled up with data. Once the job is finished, the device is shipped back to AWS and the data put into your S3 bucket. Typical transfer times are about a week from start to finish. AWS Snowball provides a secure and efficient solution for transferring large datasets into and out of AWS when network-based transfers are impractical. I particularly like its rugged hardware, built-in encryption, tamper-resistant design, automatic import process, and straightforward job management through the AWS Console. The appliance is easy to configure, and the associated client software provides a simple user experience for copying large volumes of data. Performance is significantly better than transferring hundreds of terabytes over standard internet connections. The pricing is cost-effective for one-time migrations because it dramatically reduces migration timelines while avoiding prolonged network utilization. Snowball Edge also supports local compute capabilities, allowing preprocessing before data is transferred into AWS. Although Snowball itself does not provide AI functionality, it is commonly used to migrate large training datasets into Amazon S3 for downstream analytics, SageMaker AI, and Amazon Bedrock workloads. Because Snowball is a physical appliance, shipping and logistics introduce additional planning compared to cloud-native transfer services. What problems is AWS Snowball solving and how is that benefiting you? Snowball accelerated large-scale data migration into AWS without saturating enterprise network bandwidth. Example: Several hundred terabytes of historical log files, backup archives, and analytics datasets were transferred from an on-premises data center into Amazon S3 using Snowball Edge. AWS snowball is the service that enables you to transfer your large data to or from the AWS cloud. The best thing about this service is that for large data transfers in TBs it's very convenient as we don't need to wait for that much. It's easy to order and data is securely transferred to the cloud. For Petabytes or exabytes of data, the snowmobile is used for very large organizations/architectures. Its location-dependent, and sometimes delivery is delayed a lot though was is working to give a better experience but still needs a lot of improvement. During migration, it doesn't take that much time as even with the fastest connection over internet it's very tedious to transfer data when it comes to terabytes. AWS Snowball is part of the Snow Family - Snowball, Snowball edge and Snowmobile. I have never had a use case of Snowmobile, which is a truck that literally take a massive 100PB of data to the nearest data center. Snowball itself is slightly less cool than a truck for transporting data as it looks like a jerry can come futuristic briefcase. Its easy to use as plug in, set IP address, install Snowball client - which compresses and encrypts data. It is fast at migrating data, we did 48TB in 24 hours. Its' not available in all regions and whilst data IN to S3 is free data OUT of S3 has a cost, so if your workload has lots of small files, possibly millions of them, you will be higher S3 costs. AWS Snowball is offline devices used to perform data migration. Any migration takes more than a week to transfer the data over the network, then we need to use Snowball devices. There are two types of storages available in Snowball 1. Snowball Edge Storage Optimized - transfer upto 80 TB 2. AWS Snowball is one of the best services for the migration of your data to/from the AWS cloud. Basically, when you select the snowball service from the AWS console, AWS will send a device call Snowball to your place via post. You can copy your data into the Snowball the AWS will take the device and take the data from Snowball to Glacier(one of the storage devices from AWS). Sometimes it takes too long in sending the device to your address. Also this service is not available in all the regions of AWS. It also has some high-end costs.
