**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Internet | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 07, 2021

**What do you like best about AWS Glue?**

I like that Glue lets me create jobs or use the Catalog with my existing Spark ETL jobs. Glue is serverless, so I don't have to worry about any of the standard cons that come with hosting my own.

**What do you dislike about AWS Glue?**

Glue doesn't provide a lot of integrations with other ETL platforms if one wants to mix and match services between multiple providers. Glue also only supports a handful of SQL database sources and S3.

**What problems is AWS Glue solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I used Glue Catalog to create schemas for my Spark Streaming job on EMR and my Kinesis Firehose application. It helped reduce any false documents from entering the Lake. I used Glue jobs to do one-time migration from MongoDB to S3.

  ### 4. Glue is a great tool if we want to run a catalogue on top of the tap. It gels perfectly with Athena.

**What problems is AWS Glue solving and how is that benefiting you?**

AWS Glue helped us understand what data we have, why we had it, how to analyze it, and then move it between our services.

  ### 10. Best for quick deployment of ETL jobs

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer & Network Security | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 28, 2020

**What do you like best about AWS Glue?**

Easy to integrate with majority of aws services although majority of our work Load come from s3. No overhead for provisioning of etl jobs

**What do you dislike about AWS Glue?**

If the initially start up time for cluster spin up could be reduced it would be a great service to work on

**What problems is AWS Glue solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We mostly work with the end to end data lake setup on aws where aws glue is majorly used for the data transformation. Major benefit is that it is serverless and saves a lot of time on defining your schemas

  ### 11. AWS glue for ETL

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Anudeep M. | SAP BODS S/4 Hana MDG solutions migration developer, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 28, 2019

**What do you like best about AWS Glue?**

The most useful thing about AWS glue is to convert the data into parquet format from the raw data format, which is not present with other ETL tools . It can convert a very large amount of data into parquet format and retrieve it as required.

**What do you dislike about AWS Glue?**

Its not user friendly with Graphical user interface like other ETL tools and expects developers to work on coding and debugging is tough. AWS glue source to target mapping schema creation is also not user friendly.

**Recommendations to others considering AWS Glue:**

AWS integration with other applications for fetching data has limitation. Hand shake with whitelisting of AWS ports and servers and packet size for sending data and hopping between points to move the data needs to be considered while sending data into its raw bucket. It works fine as along as data is available in raw buckets.

**What problems is AWS Glue solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We were able to migrate the energy audit data into AWS using AWS glue for billions of records. Data types were limited.

  ### 12. ETL service not for all use cases

**Reviewed by:** Yuriy P. | Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 01, 2019

**What do you like best about AWS Glue?**

Purely serverless. Great dashboard.
Has many features.
Crawler that discovers data schema in S3,
Ability to run spark like scripts for data processing.
Meta store for pseudo tables from s3

**What do you dislike about AWS Glue?**

Spark like scripts are using AWS code wrappers over spark code. Requires to learn the Api. In order to debug need to perform a lot of movements.
As for to one sevice, to many things dropped in one place.

**Recommendations to others considering AWS Glue:**

No other option for spectrum for example, but to use it

**What problems is AWS Glue solving and how is that benefiting you?**

S3 data schema discovery.
ETL for data in S3 using fully managed EMR like cluster.
S3 data pseudo tables manipulation.

  ### 13. AWS Glue is powerful serverless ETL tool.

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Consumer Goods | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 01, 2019

**What do you like best about AWS Glue?**

The best thing in glue is you no need to worry about infrastructure ,and it is build on spark frame work , sk it is faster and do inmemory computaction. Most of the cases gor 1 to 1 transformations aws glue automatically generates pyspark code.best part is ML LIB

**What do you dislike about AWS Glue?**

Still it has to improve towards ETL transformations.and when we run job for firsttime it takes lot time to actual start

**Recommendations to others considering AWS Glue:**

For data processing on aws cloud you we must explore aws glue etl tool

**What problems is AWS Glue solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Most of our data cleansing taks done by glue

  ### 14. This aws glie is really cost effective and sustain with tough challenges to existing lagecy ETL tool

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Insurance | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 21, 2019

**What do you like best about AWS Glue?**

- Uses spark and big data frame internally fwhich is really awesome to implement glue job for huge density of data.
- aws glue run in the vpc which is more secure in data prospective.
- serverless architecture which give benefit to reduce the Maintainablity cost , auto scale and lot.
- if you know the behaviour of you data than can optimise the glue job to run very effectively.

**What do you dislike about AWS Glue?**

- glue uses spark framwork in backend system. So to play will aws glue you must know spark and big data concept to build your glue jobs.
- glue runs in vpc so it is hard to get the dependecy lib to run job like in python.
- not developer friendly like other etl tool have like streamsets
- because internally uses hadoop system take more time to run job. Which is very hard for the development in aws glue console
- no concept to stream the data, only dump load can be done wth crown tab Or trigger glue job.

**Recommendations to others considering AWS Glue:**

Can use it is really awesome aws components in etl prospective

**What problems is AWS Glue solving and how is that benefiting you?**

- multiple parameter pass before glue start run like memory usage, spark configuration etc.

**What do you like best about AWS Glue?**

The best part in glue is serverless and we can connect to different data sources easily like oracle, redshift, sqlserver , s3 .. etc. I like crawler very much it understands different format text files and builds schema in athena.machine learning is another asset for glue

**What do you dislike about AWS Glue?**

When we start a job for first time it takes lot of time to actual start. I can understand here glue trys to build spark cluster and prepares environment for running glue code.

**What problems is AWS Glue solving and how is that benefiting you?**

All of our data cleansing is done by glue. We havd almost morethan 4 TB data. Glue works well with it.

**Reviewed by:** parth s. | Cloud Architect, Information Technology and Services, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 20, 2018

**What do you like best about AWS Glue?**

i have been using it for 1-2 years , the best thing about AWS glue is it's a serverless solution , it works by just pointing AWs glue to all other kinds of ETL jobs and hit run , it basically an service that makes it simple and cost effective to categorize data , clean the data , enrich the data , and it makes the job moving data reliably btwn various data stores very easy and efficient, we can also connect it with oracle database !!

**What do you dislike about AWS Glue?**

it gives very high level of automation and less customization !!

**Recommendations to others considering AWS Glue:**

Very cost effective and reliable service to clean data, enrich data and to perform all kind of ETL (Extract Transform Load ) operations on the data!!

**What problems is AWS Glue solving and how is that benefiting you?**

we use it to perform ETL jobs like preparing data for Machine Learning Model , to do analytics and auditing!!

  ### 24. Better alternative for hive metastore

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ajinkya B. | Member Of Technical Staff (Data Platform), Information Technology and Services, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 27, 2018

**What do you like best about AWS Glue?**

Seems to be great option if you wwant to test out another metastore instead of the default one which comes with hive

**What do you dislike about AWS Glue?**

Its too new and not many tutorials or use cases are mentioned on the web so it will take some time to use this in prod. right now we are still doing poc on it

**What problems is AWS Glue solving and how is that benefiting you?**

we can reduce pressure on hive metastore. sometimes the data can be too much and can get spikes in hive metastore so we need something better solution which wont have the same issues we already deal with. glue can be good option here which will solve the problem

  ### 25. The ETL (Extract Tranform And Load) service for AWS!

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** alkesh g. | Cloud Architect, Information Technology and Services, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 15, 2018

**What do you like best about AWS Glue?**

i have been working with AWS Glue for 2-3 years , it allows you to locate , move and transform all your data sets across your business , the most interesting thing about AWS Glue is ,it's server less you can run your all ETL jobs by just pointing Glue to them, you don't need to configure , provision or spinup servers , and you don't need to manage their life cycle , it customizes your task by 80-85%!!

**What do you dislike about AWS Glue?**

it's not that easy to learn and implement AWS Glue because it contains concepts like Crawlers , ETL scripts etc.

**Recommendations to others considering AWS Glue:**

one of the reliable and heavily used server less software for performing all kinds of ETL tasks on data sets!!

we're using it for 2-3 years for performing all the ETL tasks on our Structured as well as Semi-Structure data sets!!

  ### 26. Easiest Cloud Platform (according to multiple clients we work with)

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Hardware | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 28, 2018

**What do you like best about AWS Glue?**

Ease, simplicity, intuitive-ness. Hands down the easiest platform to administer, maintain, and scale. This is coming from multiple clients we work with who have swtiched to the product from a variety of competitors.

**What do you dislike about AWS Glue?**

Price can be an issue for some, depending on the company size and budgetary restrictions. Certainly it's not anything related to simplicity or ease.

**Recommendations to others considering AWS Glue:**

Everything seems to be wonderful in terms of ease of use and simplicity

**What problems is AWS Glue solving and how is that benefiting you?**

As a growing company who supports a number of clients, we've found it's easier in terms of the platform vs. the other options out there. Time is a commodity we never get enough of, so to reduce training and administering time is KEY.

  ### 27. Very specific use cases only

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Hospital & Health Care | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 28, 2018

**What do you like best about AWS Glue?**

Schedule ETL operations is very cool, I think it could be a great thing.

**What do you dislike about AWS Glue?**

UI needs work. Very slow, HOWEVER, my first experience with this was at re:invent, so resources were probably stretched thin. I did talk to another person in the training with me who said it does tend to be slow, but he just schedules jobs to run over night and it works great for him.

**Recommendations to others considering AWS Glue:**

Try it out with a POC. I've heard from it works very well in production.

**What problems is AWS Glue solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I'm not currently solving a business problem with it. I would like to use it for automated feedback processing.

  ### 28. AWS Glue review

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Darun J. | AWS Glue Review, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 30, 2018

**What do you like best about AWS Glue?**

It is easy to load and analyze data. Running an ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) job is quite easy and intuitive. Once the data is processed by AWS Glue, the data can be queried and extracted using simple SQL like commands.

**What do you dislike about AWS Glue?**

Integration with other AWS components is not easy even if all the components are in the same environment.

**Recommendations to others considering AWS Glue:**

Best tool for ETL jobs and data analysis

**What problems is AWS Glue solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Cleaning up and extracting data from large datasets

  ### 29. Easy ETL with a few clicks

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 27, 2018

**What do you like best about AWS Glue?**

The one thing I love about AWS Glue is that we are using to transform our dynamodb application data into a relation database that reporting tools like tableau and looker can use easily.

**What do you dislike about AWS Glue?**

The documentation and sample code around it is horrible. Usually, I raise an support ticket to resolve my issues.

**Recommendations to others considering AWS Glue:**

If you want to use an ETL in AWS then Glue is your answer. We have used data pipeline and it was too much but with glue it meets our needs.

**What problems is AWS Glue solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Taking unstructured data and making it an structured format for data virtulizations.

  ### 30. AWS Glue is promising but needs improvements

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 28, 2018

**What do you like best about AWS Glue?**

1.Serverless. Fully managed.
2. Easy to write a script.
3. Connects with Relational databases (JDBC)
4. Data crawler and integration with Athena.

**What do you dislike about AWS Glue?**

1. No IDE supported for development. Delay in identifying syntax errors or other tyop errors as we have to wait for servers to start.
2. Current DPU configuration is small.
3. Development end point option is available but no way to pause it. We have to delete it or will be charged as long as it is up. Setting up Dev end point can be painful considering organization's security policies.

**What problems is AWS Glue solving and how is that benefiting you?**

ETL pipeline.

  ### 31. The Service is good, can become better

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** nilesh k. | Software Engineering Manager 1, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 27, 2018

**What do you like best about AWS Glue?**

The service is good in a servless architecture. The glue perfomes the etl spark jobs perfectly well.

**What do you dislike about AWS Glue?**

the service takes a lot of time to provision the servers. the insights in the glue-assembly-jar is not there. We face lot of dependency conflicts.

**What problems is AWS Glue solving and how is that benefiting you?**

we wanted to built a serverless data processing pipeline. Glue fits in well there.

  ### 32. It is coming along

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Automotive | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 26, 2018

**What do you like best about AWS Glue?**

We began implementing in Jan 18 for etl. It filled our need, but was hard to manage. It management has since improved greatly, and we have several pipelines (with step functions) in production. We continue to evolve our patterns, and glue continues to be a key service within those patterns.

**What do you dislike about AWS Glue?**

It continues to be difficult to understand processing states. It was difficult to orchestrate (we tried triggers, but those worked poorly, hence step functions),

**What problems is AWS Glue solving and how is that benefiting you?**

ETL - cleansing raw data, transforming per business rules, publishing to S3 buckets.

  ### 33. Easy Schema Creation for Athena

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jaaromy Z. | Senior Systems Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 27, 2018

**What do you like best about AWS Glue?**

Glue Crawlers allow me to easily modify and create Athena tables based on ever changing JSON objects.

**What do you dislike about AWS Glue?**

Lack of adequate documentation, (ESPECIALLY examples!) of Glue Crawler Classifiers.

**What problems is AWS Glue solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Simplified deployment and maintainance of Athena tables with Glue Crawlers. Removed need to schedule a dedicated Lambda cron job to create partitions.

  ### 34. Good but not enough integration with open source data processing tools

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Li G. | Software Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 26, 2018

**What do you like best about AWS Glue?**

Wide selection of built-in process to ETL and schema extraction. integration with EMR, Athena,
