"EC2: Power Hosting for DIYers"

What do you like best?

AWS EC2 is the most generic and portable way to host your own web applications. I like that, by working directly with individual linux boxes, I don't have to worry about being tied to a particular cloud provider (not that AWS has given me any reason to switch!) Plus, there's nothing you can't run on an EC2 instance.

What do you dislike?

You forsake a lot of the bells and whistles that comes with more tailored cloud services like Elastic Beanstalk, Launching, configuring, and maintaining your EC2 instance comes with a fair bit of overhead.

Recommendations to others considering the product

First check and see if AWS offers a cloud service for whatever you're planning on using these EC2 boxes for. If you want to host a database, consider using their managed database services for example. EC2 is great for custom setups and cost-effective hosting but if your needs are relatively generic, you might save yourself some hassle by using a dedicated service.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are hosting a public-facing web application and some internal workers/APIs on a medium-sized pool of EC2 instances. We use docker with a container orchestration system to manage these services. By running directly on EC2, we are able to utilize spot pricing which saves us 80-90% on our hosting costs.

"Fast and secure servers"

What do you like best?

I love Amazon EC2 because since we used it, it has guaranteed great reliability and efficiency in its service. Until today we have not found any failure in their servers and the support offered is really fast and helpful.

What do you dislike?

At first one of the first difficulties we encountered with the service offered by Amazon EC2 is that it was very difficult to predict what was the monthly cost of our instances, although with the use and the passage of time is something you get used to.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Amazon EC2 guarantees security and an incredible service to host from sites to large amounts of data if that is what you are looking for.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Amazon EC2 has offered us a great service in hosting different websites that we manage and we have never had any server down. To run any web application the servers are perfect although a little expensive if it require many resources to run.

"AWS - Best cloud based service provider globally."

What do you like best?

The storage is cheap, versatile. Implementation is time is comparatively very less and is really quick. AWS is comparatively affordable as compared to its counterparts. It is very easy to use. The best part of AWS is their Customer service - they neatly understand your needs and offer the best suitable solution applicable. The Agility - just in a few clicks or just a call can help you in increasing the bandwidth or any other resource needed. Their elasticity and scalability are just awesome, you can really replicate or use the predefined VMs to expand or scale the platform as per your need.

What do you dislike?

The cost can go exceed up to some few lakhs by just one minor mistake. The pricing criteria. If I want to select the region as Mumbai, but the servers in Tokyo seems to be more cheap being not near to me. There are frequent outages and downtime in some of the regions. The options they provide are very vague and sometimes confuses the user.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Be it a small organisation or a big one, AWS suits all your needs. if you ever need to scale your infrastructure or reduce it, its very easy. Sometimes you have to face some downtimes but when the service is up, its always available and at great speed.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Managing physical infrastructure was getting difficult day by day and after a fire incident in our datacenter, we were looking for a cloud service provider. No doubt Amazon was the first name came in our mind. We did a few research and created a team of 3 members. It just took 3 months to migrate our first data center onto AWS Cloud. It's really easy to manage and sustain.

"A zero-maintenance, zero-fuss, access-anywhere, pay-per-use Virtual Machine!"

What do you like best?

Renting out their retail platforms' idle capacity, Amazon started a really good thing. Thanks to their initiative, we can now have as many computers as we want, without the overhead or frustration of purchasing, maintaining or troubleshooting them!

Quite fast to start-up and shut-down

Now offers per-second billing!

Blazingly fast in-VM internet connectivity

Close integration with other AWS services - sometimes with free/reduced transfer costs

Ability to snapshot, image and relaunch, reproducing the exact past state of a machine

Tight security, auditing and thorough monitoring

Free tier allows you to run one EC2 instance for a complete year (no downtime)!

What do you dislike?

Having to update the security rules every time your public IP changes, in order to maintain continued access - avoidable by relaxing security group rules, assuming your SSH keys are securely maintained

Missing some very basic yet vital monitoring features - e.g. there is no built-in way to receive a simple alert when your disk is full!

Lack of useful base images below 4GB in size, which means hindering the efficient usage of the free storage (EBS) tier

Recommendations to others considering the product

Carefully consider the instance type you are going to deploy (hourly rate, network/disk performance, memory capacity etc). Overprovisioning and underprovisioning are both equally bad during the long run.

Try to utilize cheaper alternatives to On-Demand instances, such as bidding-based Spot Instances, for significant cost reductions

Upfront payment for Reserved Instances can yield significant cost savings (up to 75%!) for long-term usage. Check out https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/pricing/

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Hosting internal-use services that cannot be provisioned via serverless and other types of deployments

Performance testing (http://esbperformance.org/) of our product stacks, under exact reproducible conditions

Hosting product demonstrations for prospective clients

EC2's low cost, high performance and excellent SLA has boosted our productivity and saved us much of the maintenance hassle over the past several years.

"Near-limitless flexibility in a cloud VPS product"

What do you like best?

The amount of choices you have with EC2 - you can use practically any operating system-- open-source or proprietary, with any amount of power you want from your hardware. EC2 offers so many options for customization which makes it really easy to scale from prototype to production without having to worry about the platform you're building on.

What do you dislike?

The learning curve is a bit steep for new users. The concept of VPCs may dissuade new users who just want to get something up and running quickly.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Go for it, once you get over the initial learning curve the system is so powerful and customizable that you won't need to switch again.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

- We no longer have hardware costs; we don't have to buy servers.

- Scaling up to more powerful hardware is easy and can be done on-the-fly with a few AWS CLI commands (or mouse clicks in the console).

- Automated backups of our system images via Amazon's AMIs make it very easy to spin up additional application servers without configuration. Huge time saver.

"Number 1 Cloud Compute engine"

What do you like best?

In my view amazon ec2 can be considered as the best compute engine which can be customised with whatever hardware and whatever OS you require.Even its free to use T2 micro kernel is capable of hosting a web service and serving hundreds of customers. Its best side is that it is elastic and you pay for what your service uses on the engine. You can easily host a service or a web application in minutes if you have its offline version ready. This are the benefits of using Amazon EC2 instance.

What do you dislike?

It is very good in all prospects,Amazon ec2 doesn't deserve anything to dislike.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Yeah it is absolutely a great service from amazon cloud and I would say the best compute engine anyone can have.So guys if you are interested in deploying web services to the cloud and want some quick easy to learn solutions and which can be reliable in every sense then EC2 instance is what you would want to consider using.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am using Amazon EC2 for deploying cloud based services as required by my clients. Our team develops the whole service in python or any other language depending on the project and client requirements and I dump everything to the cloud and make it ready to use independent web service using Amazon EC2.It is quick easy and worth every penny.

"Best Compute and Elastic Engine"

What do you like best?

It helps to reduce cost of physical hardware costs, and IT management costs. We can deploy the servers in minutes. The main advantage of this is that it charges on the basis of per second billing so that we dont get much charged also. Also the machine can be scaled up and scaled down easily.

What do you dislike?

The main disadvantage of the EC is that there is no option to connect EC2 instance from AWS Console directly. And also I think if I am newbie in EC2 then it gets sometimes difficult to understand its documentation. You can take someone's help can easily learn that instead of docs.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It is very cost effective with different On-Demand, Spot Instances & Reserved Instance. And most important of all it comes with Amazon's Security and Reliability.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Amazon EC2 was very helpful in removing existing Physical In House server with Cloud based Scalable Virtual machines that is available all the time. It did not only reduced the h/w work but also stress of maintaining them by our IT team.

"Computation resources in the cloud"

What do you like best?

EC2 provides a diverse and flexible tool and interface to allocate and use various types of computational resources. It is kind of cheap to rent a super computer power for a hour comparing with buying a powerful server to perform a hour of heavy computations. Isn't it? Amazon EC2 allows to utilize pay as you go principle applied to cloud computations.

What do you dislike?

There are too many elements and it is almost impossible to explore and use them all, and then correctly terminate every tiny separate part of them.

It is easy to overlook and miss some small elements while terminating complex systems and only billing will inform of that elements via charging for them

Recommendations to others considering the product

EC2 is a stable and steadily developing platform that is updated with new features regularly.

That thing considered - do not hesitate to apply for Amazon's free tier that will provide 12 month access to explore ec2.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am using EC2 for virtualization and for short gigs and projects that do not last long and used mostly just for testing this or that feature. It is also good to use nvidia GPU instances at EC2 for heavy calculations.

"Hands down the easiest cloud platform"

What do you like best?

The accessibility and the robust nature of AWS in general is the best part of it. AWS has clear documentation that gives step by step procedure and even error troubleshooting options. As a novice learner I found it to be extremely useful and easy to access. Plus I LOVE THE 1 YEAR FREE TRIAL that helps us learn it without spending so much money.

What do you dislike?

I don't like the complex GUI interface. Having worked in AZURE before I felt that it was a bit more complicated to access few things although the implementation was pretty much simple. I think AWS should work more on its design and make things even more clear on the portal.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you have any doubts or errors immediately learn the documentation that amazon provides for aws rather than any other online source. Its simply the best straightforward option there is.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are trying to deploy several EC2 instances, learn load balancing concepts and create databases that will store employee details in the cloud. We have also programmed ALEXA and AWS together. We are now able to access the billing information, EC2 instances health monitoring just by asking few programmed questions to alexa which will collect detail and answer the information present in the portal.

"Quality service"

What do you like best?

With AWS EC2 you can manage a large number of servers in the cloud with great capacity and at an incredible speed. This service has become a very useful product for us since it has allowed us to store all our files and execute a large number of applications in each of the instances that we manage to improve our autonomy and efficiency.

What do you dislike?

The only complaint I can have is that sometimes their servers can be really expensive but the quality of the service offered makes up for it.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Before we could use this service, we had to configure our own servers and constantly monitor them, which meant that we lost a lot of time. Now with AWS EC2 we can assign, direct and configure instances according to our needs easily and simply.

"AWS EC2 Review"

What do you like best?

AWS EC2 provides scalable compute capacity on Amazon Web Services Cloud. The good thing about EC2 is it provides per-configured templates for instances, known as Amazon Machine Images. User can save the machine image, make a replica of image etc. EC2 provides various configuration of CPU, Memory Storage and networking capacity. EC2 comes with free tier, after which user has to pay per hour.

What do you dislike?

EC2 is very expensive once user exceed free tier limit. User has pay additional charges for storage on the instance.

Recommendations to others considering the product

AWS EC2 is capable of providing huge compute capacity and eliminates your need to invest in hardware up front, so you can develop and deploy applications faster.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We created hadoop clusters on ec2. we used 3 slave instances and 1 master instance. We have used this to run various distributed computing such as word count on large data etc.

"Excellent service provider in the cloud"

What do you like best?

EC2 is a quality cloud service at an excellent price and that offers multiple functions. Of the things that I have always liked about EC2 is the extremely high speed of its servers and the quality of its support although I have never had any problems with any of its servers when I get in touch with them, they respond quickly.

What do you dislike?

In the beginning, the user interface is really confusing because it has so many functions. I used to get confused easily, which complicated things when I started using this service.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you want to try their servers offer a free trial. Try them and you will surely like their service.

"Best Compute Engine and Cost effective"

What do you like best?

Amazon EC2 is a compute engine for cloud which can be integrated with your web app and can be used for computing. It provides linux interface and supports almost all types of programming languages so that you can use it more flexibly. The services through ec2 can be launched when required which is a great thing. It has many other best functionalities like secured, scalable and cost effective. The cost is calculated on the resources used and so you pay only for what you use so it is very much cost effective.

What do you dislike?

I have been using amazon ec2 for almost all of my projects as a compute engine and serving best backend for my webapps and services,so I have nothing to dislike about ec2.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I recommend using amazon ec2 instance for computation requirements as a backend cloud service for your web apps.It is having linux interface and can be easily integrated into your app. Also it has support for a variety of programming languages which can be used as a backend service. It is also supports usage of GPU for your compute engine and also it is cost effective because you have to pay only for the resources you use or being used by your webapp or service so I recommend using amazon ec2.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am using amazon ec2 for almost all my projects as a compute engine as a backend service to my projects. It has linux interface and can be remotely accessed from anywhere. Also if the project requires minor computation then it is almost free so it is cost effective and this is one of the reason for using ec2 instance for computing.

"Flexible, unlimited but somewhat confusing to implement at first."

What do you like best?

Amazon EC2 allows you to easily scale and use cloud servers to host your code / servers. We used it as a place to host websites along with preform various tasks and computing that we could have running in on a server. The simplicity of being able to spin up an instance makes using AWS EC2 that much better.

What do you dislike?

The learning curve for using AWS EC2 is pretty high considering that you practically need to become dev-ops yourself. This means that you must take care of updating and maintaining the code within the server yourself which could get annoying

Recommendations to others considering the product

If your company is looking to easily implement servers with minimum cost and application than AWS EC2 is the way to go!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Hosting servers is expensive and unreliable if you do it yourself. Amazon Web Services EC2 allows us to use servers without having to worry about up-time or maintaining a server block.

"Good Business Oriented VPS"

What do you like best?

EC2 is cost effective and allows me to manage servers easily, once a few concepts are in place. The ability to take snapshots of my servers and replicate them quickly allows me to make server-breaking changes without losing progress, and I can replicate servers at the drop of a hat.

What do you dislike?

AWS wraps network concepts with their own UI conceits, if you're not familiar with the base concept, you won't have an easier time with theirs.

Recommendations to others considering the product

EC2 is part of an ecosystem of AWS services and you won't find it easy to integrate it with other things. You'll be strongly incentivized whether you desire to or not, to move things onto AWS that are not easily removed from there.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We hosted our website from EC2 for a while, now we host a couple command&control servers for managing the containerized version, in addition the containers themselves are hosted on ec2 instances.

"My preferred cloud provider"

What do you like best?

We use AWS for cloud processing for some of our genetic data when our servers are overloaded. We like the availability of the EC2 cloud, and have several AWS certified engineers in the office so it is a great fit. Having an On-Demand server when needed keeps our costs down as we don't need to buy hardware that ends up idling.

What do you dislike?

AWS is extremely complex. Over time this has improved, but the sheer volume of services that exist in the AWS ecosystem makes it hard to get started, if you don't have experience. EC2 on its own isn't that bad -- but the technology constantly evolves as services are added and these are sometimes needed to be able to efficiently use the EC2 service (S3, EBS, Elastic Network, etc). Therefore this complexity does affect your experience with the EC2 instances. Plus a lot of work is done through the web console (which is crazy complex given all the services Amazon has created).

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you are willing to do the work to familiarize yourself with all that AWS has to offer, you will maximize your efficiency and costs with EC2. This is well worth the time investment, IMO.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Overflow computing without the need for buying additional hardware.

"Excellent tool for quickly deploying development environments"

What do you like best?

Instances can be turned on and off at will, saving money for those projects that have a lot of start and stop in them. The lambda automatice backups make it very easy to create a recovery procedure. And creating new instances from an existing instance AMI is awesome when we need to create a duplicate project.

What do you dislike?

The admin panel can be confusing to navigate if you ever decide to go beyond the things you already know. And the billing dashboard is a nightmare if you want to try figuring out where your costs are. The costs are also confusing and would be better if they could tie costs per instances or even per client.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Spend time watching tutorials on billing and the dashboard

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Development for 3rd party clients . . . we've been able to build them scalable systems that are easily migrated to a live platform without having to find OS related issues during migration. We are also going to use EC2 for easily deployed platforms for a new SaaS software we are releasing. The ability to automate most of the deployment is a pretty big deal also.

"Better cloud storage service"

What do you like best?

AWS EC2 offers a wide variety of Windows and Linux servers where you can choose the one that suits you best. It is very easy to run any server and the best thing of all is that you can run a micro instance without any cost.

What do you dislike?

The AWS ec2 interface is very outdated and lacks any guidance that can facilitate the learning of the platform quickly.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I recommend in the beginning test the micro instance which is free and in this way adapt to the platform.

"EC2: If you're going to use cloud services this is the one."

What do you like best?

AWS is the benchmark for cloud services. Its ever expanding collection of services connected to and that use EC2 make it kind of a no-brainer choice for putting your services in up in the cloud

What do you dislike?

Despite almost a decade of use, AWS EC2 is still really an expert-=only system. You are not going to just "stand up a few instances" and call it a day. It's a very powerful system and to get the most out of it and not to waste tons of money, you will have to learn a lot about the system and use it correctly. Worse, just because something is in the cloud doesn't mean that it somehow is magically backed up or is redundant, has failover or CDN support, etc. You can haver all those things and more with AWS, but you have to implemented them on the provided building blocks or make use of Amazon's own packages services (like their RDS data base services)... which of course, is a value added service.

Recommendations to others considering the product

- Understand your server and data needs before trying use AWS; you cannot just fire up instances

- Understand your data I/O requirements - sending data across AWS or over the Internet using AWS can get quite costly.

- If you do not have top-notch sysadmins with AWS experience, hire a consultant; this is a set of lego-blocks for building infrastructure that cots by the minute. It adds up!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

- Server virtualization

- CDN access/support

- Distributed databases

- Distributed/redundant databases

- On the fly server capacity/scaling

"fast Support, Great Customer Support"

What do you like best?

The speed of the servers, are extremely high and always up, in the time I've been with Amazon, my servers never went down for a single second. the support is great, I had many troubles while setting up my server as well as the internet connection associated with the server went down, the support team replied quickly and fixed the issue within minutes, really impressive. the servers are quite easy to setup and many options to configure them as you need. they offer a free trial with credits enough to run their servers up to a period of 1 year. I got into the platform with the free credit I got and really impressed by the performance of the servers. another great thing about Amazon is that they give access to the platform through SSH which can be helpful. also, you've got a chance to backup your data so you're safe even if the server went down.

What do you dislike?

the interface is really complicated and at first, it was almost impossible for me to navigate and usually end up at wrong pages frequently. the payment after the first year trial isn't cheap and there are several cheap services out there who provide those specifications at a very cheap rate.

Recommendations to others considering the product

"Best Performance in the Market"

What do you like best?

Amazon AWS grants you a free trial which enough to try their cloud platform free for 1 year that includes the EC2 platform. the EC2 platform allows you to Create servers instantly with a lot of customization options for ones need.there are a lot of server locations all around the globe with multiple servers locations in reach country which help you to select the nearest and fastest server for you and thus increasing the connection speed. they also give API access to every severs which is a great feature looking from the developer's point of view. the security provided by Amazon is really incredible, each virtual cloud is private cloud which is isolated from other ones and encrypted for privacy. the performance of the servers are incredible, they are extremely fast, I run a PHP script in their server for almost one month continuously at a high CPU rate, the program only crashed ones in the whole period, which is great considering the specifications of the server. the support is also great, they are there to help 24/7 to any query starting with the setup. the live chat option is really great very responsive.

What do you dislike?

the pricing after the trial can be a burden for a normal user even thou you could go for long-term plans and save on server costs. the interface is too complicated, there are a lot of options and really hard to navigate through.

What do you like best?

the pricing is really great, I mean it's really affordable. in fact, i got a one-year free trial with Amazon and find its performance really impressive. the servers are pretty fast and respond really fast. another great thing about Amazon cloud platform is the security provided, not only to the account but to the data as well. they do regular backups and keep your data safe in case of a server fail and i find it really useful as a developer. amazon's customer support is great, they have live chat option and responds to your queries in seconds. not just they respond but are also technically capable of fixing your issues within minutes. they provide servers in multiple operating systems all across the globe so you could choose according to what you need. there are also a wide variety of servers available from you could choose what best suits your need.

It is great for development firms and larger agencies that provide managed hosting because the infrastructure is reliable and secure and it is much easier to manage costs when deployed and scaled at will.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

With Amazon EC2 we solved the problem of high availability when used with a load balancer, We were able to easily implement multiple configurations from the panel with the simple click of a button. EC2 is based on Linux, therefore, if you understand Linux, it facilitates the use of EC2. It's economical, We could actually scale at a fraction of the cost of hosting a real server and we have not experienced any downtime since we switched from fixed host provider.

"Best IaaS platform for reasonable rate"

What do you like best?

1. Ability to configure the server with whatever I need.

2. Admin access.

3. Load balancer and scalability

4. Auto-scale instances (can disable auto-scale whenever I don't need)

5. Support for FTP like FileZilla

What do you dislike?

1. Setting it up is tedious. (Get public/private key, SSH using Putty etc.)

2. Difficult to understand at first about how it calculates instance hours.

3. Difficult to use Docker (need to use ECS service to deploy using Docker, cannot do it without that)

Recommendations to others considering the product

Be aware of the initial setup procedure - It is time consuming. Also, try GCP PaaS if that satisfies your need, if not and you need IaaS then EC2 is the best you can get in market right now.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

1. Getting rid of server rooms.

2. Enhanced scalability

3. IAM management provided out of the box by AWS

"Experience with Amazon Elastic Compute cloud"

What do you like best?

The best with Amazon EC2 is running the instances on cloud without purchasing hardware , use the instance as required , stop the instances and terminate once work is done. This is the best service offered by Amazon to invest on Infrastructure based on the need and pay for the usage. Selection Operating system has been made easy for EC2 based on Amazon machine images. User can select preferred operating systems e.g Windows,Linux flavors like RHEL,Ubuntu,SuseLinux, CentOs, WIndows of different versions 2012, 2016 . Another best feature to amazon ec2 is through private key. And this private key is unique and with respect to the user. No other user can be able to login to the others ec2 instances without key. It is safe to keep applications up and running.

Storage volumes will be deleted when ec2 instance is stopped. Data cant be retrieved or given for other users unlike desktops or laptop one can retrieve data. Data is stored in Elastic block Storage where retrieval of data would be faster when compared to block level storage. User can extend storage and compute capacity just by editing the Instance action. User can easily navigated through user interface provided by AWS which is easily understandable. Security groups is best feature for amazon ec2 to restrict access from outside world. User can provide list of IP for inbound access and outbound is by default to internet. User can specify which protocol,IP and ports to access EC2 instances

Users can recognize their EC2 through tags. 50 tags can be applied to one instance and uniquely filtered for patching through configuration tools

What do you dislike?

Key can not be updated once EC2 is started and in running state. To update new key user has to terminate the instance and apply or he can use cloud formation template.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Recommended for people who wants to reduce the cost on Infrastructure and without physical machines and waiting for long procurement procedure for hardware and accessories of hardware

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It has solved infrastructure problem

Easy to restrict access through Security Groups

East to assign roles for instances so that give permissions to instances

Easy to add more storage and compute capability in seconds without waiting for physical hardware

"It just works"

What do you like best?

The best in EC2 is that it just works and give so much things out of the box.

The whole AWS Ecosystem is giving infinite possibilities.

The EC2 machines are very reliable, fast to setup and have a lot of configuration options.

It's great for scaling.

What do you dislike?

It's a bit expensive especially if you want to scale it (one instance per service).

The ecosystem is so complex that it takes time to understand how it works and how to manage it.

Recommendations to others considering the product

The setup is a bit complicated and really requires a lot of learning, but one should not get discouraged. It's worth every minute spent on learning. I would also recommend look for an automation tools that can work with AWS (like Terraform or Cloud Formation) because working with the Amazon Console is a little annoying.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

All our infrastructure is on top of AWS, and it's heart is EC2. We are using several EC2 instances for redundancy. It also helps us making easy backups of our systems.

"EC2 for stateless Wordpress"

What do you like best?

- Easy to setup and work with

- Can auto-scale horizontally with minimum configuration and based on metrics (e.g. number of requests being received, CPU load etc.)

- CloudWatch dashboards is great for end-to-end application monitoring

What do you dislike?

- The Elastic Load Balancer (ELB) frontend to the EC2 instances is flaky. It is not mentioned clearly that the load balancer needs to be "pre-warmed", as per Amazon lingo, in order to accommodate spikes in traffic, which is counter-intuitive and, in my opinion, defeats the purpose of having auto-scaling in the first place.

- As far as auto-scaling goes,

- Expensive, unless you opt for the spot instances option

- Pricing is very complicated to communicate to clients

- Tech support is not included unless one opts for a plan

Recommendations to others considering the product

The major thing to consider is the behaviour of your application: are backend services required to respond to heavy spikes in network requests or to continuous, smooth traffic? My view is that for the latter, EC2 can be a great choice. However, be prepared to explain the complicated cost structure to your clients as well as potentially face high usage costs, depending always on your use case.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The goal was to have a stateless Wordpress installation, as described in the "WordPress: Best Practices on AWS" whitepaper (https://d0.awsstatic.com/whitepapers/wordpress-best-practices-on-aws.pdf). Although we followed the guide to the letter, the end result was frankly disappointing, mostly due to performance issues with the ELB and EFS.

"Cloud computation made simple and easy"

What do you like best?

Amazon ec2 instance is the most used cloud compute engine by cloud developers. It gives you to choose everything right from the hardware till the OS and make your own configuration. You can even set the traffic rules and limit traffic from any location.Using ec2 to deploy any web service with python backend is quite simple and most use method to create API's and webservices through amazon ec2.

What do you dislike?

No it is a very good cloud compute engine.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I recommend amazon ec2 to all the cloud developers for deploying web services and api's on cloud with least effort and use the professional features provided by amazon ec2 with least cost compared to similar services by other cloud providers. Its really a good solution to look for.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I used amazon ec2 for many of my client's project where we had to deploy the cloud services on cheaper cloud solution to get all the features and the amazon cloud has the best uptime and the management console for engine is also user friendly so I prefer using amazon ec2 for cloud deployment,

"Best Virtual Private Computer Service Ever"

What do you like best?

Easy to set up, Stable IP, high Speed bandwidth and high security level.

What do you dislike?

To be frank, nothing really, just that I do not like the way I have to regenerate the login user ID each time I shut down the Virtual computer. Aside that, every other things are fine by me.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I recommend EC2, with it you can get a lot done. For instance, you can have a powerful server that serves you 24 hours a day 7 days a week. You can start by testing it out with their free tiers and then upgrade whenever you wanted.

You do not have to create another instance in other to upgrade as all you needed to do is to adjust the configuration of your system to a desired set and the effect is instant.

You can have up to 8GB Virtual RAM, and you can have far more than that. It all depends on you.

Finally, it is pay as you go. If you are using it to manage a software like me all you have to do is to put it on when you needed it and put it off when you no longer need it. Note that, you only pay for what you use.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Running of Software, File Backup, Sending emails and testing applications.

"Best Hosting server"

What do you like best?

Amazon EC2 is the infrastructure as a service that provides you with the high end configuration that you require for your cloud server and the OS that you require for the cloud server.Using it is very easy and also it can be easily connected through ssh and you can deploy any web service like a service built in python+django and have it running easily.

What do you dislike?

No it is a very good service from amazon and using It you can easily setup your cloud server so it has nothing to dislike about it.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It is definitely one of the best hosting server for web services and also it gives you a free trial for a year.Go and try it and you will definitely like it and will feel that its very easy to host a service using Amazon EC2.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am using Amazon EC2 to deploy web services built by me for my clients on the server and as it is scalable I can use single instance for all the web service that I have and the bandwidth is also scalable so I just have to pay per the usage and so it is a very good service.

"Ground breaking service for server infrastructure implementation"

What do you like best?

Before Amazon EC2, if you want to build website, you have to buy physical servers and configure them by installing all kinds of software and you have also need to make sure the power is on with UPS. You basically take care of everything. Later when things became better, you can rent servers from other companies by paying them to take care of your servers. You can buy VPS and what you need to do then is to just to configure the software. But still, you have to take care of your servers. If you need more, you need to buy more and add them to your network. It is not scalable. Now, with Amazon EC2 service, you can simply set up a server in few minutes. And it comes with all network, security setting configured. This saves server team tons of time, and money for the company. The best thing about EC2 service is you can scale up and down according to your needs. You do not have to worry about your company do not have enough computing power during peak time, nor worry about the waste of buying more servers than you need. Overall, it is a revolutionary service you can definitely use for your company.

What do you dislike?

Everything is good. I have not found anything I do not like.

Recommendations to others considering the product

For small or big company, EC2 is the right choice for servers.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Servers! It can scale up and down. And I do not have to take care of the physical servers.

"A reliable and credible way to get a VM server"

What do you like best?

Amazon EC2 is reliable, the panel has plenty of options, there are lots of images available, and since it is such a widely used service, there is plenty of documentation and tutorials available online.

What do you dislike?

The pricing is a bit expensive. Everything starts to add up when you factor in IP addresses, storage, data transfer, etc. The panel is also very intimidating at first so you really have to take your time in learning how to use it.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you are looking for a fully customizable solution and you are an experienced server administrator who knows what you're doing, Amazon EC2 is a reliable and widely adopted platform that will serve you well. If, however, you are just getting into VMs or want a simple to use solution, I would highly recommend trying Amazon Lightsail, DigitalOcean, or Vultr instead.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Amazon EC2 helps us achieve reliable hosting for our websites. We have dealt with many smaller web hosts in the past that constantly have issues with outages or other reliability problems. Amazon AWS is rock solid and we have never had a single issue with the EC 2 instance.

"Cloud Computing at its finest"

What do you like best?

I have been using AWS now for about 6 years and I love it, spinning up a server takes minutes. I use AWS to host a mail and as a cloud server, the uptime is incredible, AWS say uptime is 99% i have always experienced 100% uptime

What do you dislike?

It is really hard to dislike anything about AWS but if i had to be picky it would be the security groups, it does take some configuration to get your ec2 instance to talk to your RDS instances. Also if you lose your SSH key then you lose connectivity to your server so you should always store this in a safe place.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you want to use a nice tool that can be offered in many regions then this should be it! you never need to worry about licencing issues as it is all handled by AWS

What do you like best?

Immediate access to infrastructure w/o need to push internal IT team for provisioning of hardware for enterprise applications, less prone for IT goof-ups in terms of computing resource requirements, extremely flexible for changing requirements.

What do you dislike?

Cost compared to other cloud providers, unavoidable but required update management and security patching as EC2 is not a managed service.

"EC2 is a flexible compute service that provides server capacity on demand at a low cost"

What do you like best?

EC2 offers computing capacity on demand at a low cost. You can select a variety of instance types and pay only for what you use. This is makes it much easier to experiment with new technology without buying additional servers up front. This allows us to test and evaluate software.

What do you dislike?

EC2 makes it hard to change instance specifications and types once the instance is launched. It also does not provide and easy way to import AMIs as container images in ecs once they are built.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It is rapidly growing and amazon continues to lower cost of ec2. I would use EC2 for all and any experiments and software testing needed by the your company.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

This also allows our innovation department to test items without the upfront costs of investing in new hardware.

"Powerful, Flexible and Affordable"

What do you like best?

The Elastic Compute Cloud on Amazon Web Services puts industry leading technology and unrivalled performance into the hands of any individual or business without demanding a fortune in the process. The ability to easily launch, scale and terminate instances and entire infrastructure all from the click of a button is reason itself for ditching traditional methods of hosting, and when combined with affordable and fair pricing, it really is hard to see past making use of the platform. The integration into other Amazon Web Services such as Route 53, CloudFront and S3 also make the Elastic Compute Cloud a no-brainer when deciding which cloud platform to use.

What do you dislike?

While being a fairly faultless platform, the Elastic Compute Cloud on Amazon Web Services does slightly suffer from a outdated administration panel, that, while providing all the features necessary, can be a little slow to react to instructions. Quite frankly, it just feels a little old fashioned. Of course though, this does little to detract from the overall benefits of using Amazon Web Services Elastic Compute Cloud and is definitely no more than a minor annoyance every now and then.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Take the free trial for a spin and see for yourself the power of the platform!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We began using Amazon Web Services Elastic Compute Cloud to host websites for our clients. We decided to use it for this because we needed on-demand scalability should our clients hosting needs expand, and also the flexibility to easily put new sites up and live within a matter of minutes. These benefits were quickly realised, as we hoped they would be, and since then we have also made use of the platform for hosting some of our internal infrastructure including an off-site Active Directory server.

"Great tool for cloud computing and other cloud services"

What do you like best?

I did not know that cloud computing was this easily accessible until I used AWS EC2. I started as an amateur programmer and soon had to take on a project using cloud computing. Being intimidated by the term, AWS EC2 however had a small learning curve that got me comfortable with the tool fast and easily. And with all the Q&A threads in the community and good business support, you will likely have somebody to help you even if the problem is just to look at one line of code. The business support is really highly recommended and they will refund you if you don't use up the whole month's service. Also the cost explorer made it really easy to understand where the cost came from.

What do you dislike?

There really isn't anything particular that I didn't like about.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Trying to conduct mass computing that real machines might take too long to compute. Also try to build a web-based software application.

"Advanced Webhosting at Your Finger Tips"

What do you like best?

Easy access to a vast array of configurable instance types at your finger tips across many different regions. Connects and is configurable by other AWS services, such as Cloudformation.

What do you dislike?

Cost, it's not cheap and it's easy to pickup a pretty high web-hosting bill. EC2 may scale, but my wallet will only stretch so far! The 'ready made' instances of things such as WHM/Cpanel & TableAU are not well maintained.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I would reverse the question, why wouldn't you consider the cloud? For early stage small startup projects, the reasons are likely to be cost and complexity of setup. However, for corporate, you're probably best off heading straight to the cloud.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Reliable, multi-region web-hosting that is highly available. Ability to use a server to solve a regular complex problem for a short burst of time, and then turn it off to minimise cost.

"Easy setup and management"

What do you like best?

- Security groups management for ec2 containers

- Extensive Documentation

- Very easy to use for a regular user

- Free trail is very useful for POC's and stuff like that. I used this for validating a small yet full fledged application deployment including RDS and codeDeploy (CD) including s3, security groups etc for free.

Please check the documentation for more details on the free tier though.

What do you dislike?

- While everything is pretty decent and amazing, the UI can be improved a lot. It still has the old days UI and while the services respond quick, the front end doesn't get well with the back end capabilities

"EC2 is lagging behind competitors in simplicity and functionality"

What do you like best?

I like how easy it is to spin up a virtual machine and making it functional. I especially like how large the AMI repository is, and how easy it is to deploy most appliances from the marketplace.

What do you dislike?

I dislike how tedious it can be to configure the networking side of my EC2 instances. I feel like Amazon has made this unnecessary complex because they wanted to make the solution as flexible as possible. When working with Azure networking in regards to virtual machines, it's much simpler to configure, stage, and manage.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I feel that as of September of 2018, Microsoft Azure is the better cloud offering. It offers most of what AWS offers but makes it far easier to deploy and manage. It integrates better with your on-premise shop, especially if you're a Wintel shop. I think AWS was the market leader at first, but Azure is quickly catching up because it's just that much easier to work with. We maintain "clouds" in both AWS and Azure, and I'd much rather do something in Azure vs doing it in AWS.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We use AWS EC2 instances to solve a number of business challenge. The first challenge that we experience is that we want to easily be able to set up high availability sets of instances on a regular basis. AWS makes it incredibly easy to accomplish this goal while making the process easy to understand (as long as the networking is properly set up initially). Additionally, we have the need to ensure that in the event of a natural disaster, we can easily fail over our on-premise infrastructure to AWS to maintain business operations. AWS gives us several tools to allow us to do this.

"Top class IaaS provider!"

What do you like best?

The fact is, AWS pioneered the IaaS model and they are by far the best in the market and still leading the pack. The built-in security features are best-in-class, the support team is great and they offer a wide variety of availability zones for each region.

What do you dislike?

It can be a bit over whelming for a newbie to get up & running with this environment and it gives an impression, it’s really meant for cloud experts. You can easily get lost with the admin console and the billing is a bit confusing as well. They need to make it easy to consume and help people get quickly get started with things.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Overall it's a great solution for developers and businesses looking for moving their IT to the cloud. Ensure you have someone experienced in the team who is well versed with the EC2 admin console and the entire working of it or else, it can take much longer to get up & running. It’s usually a good idea to prepare yourself by watching YouTube tutorials and reading online documentation especially for billing and security topics.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We have two products that integrate with EC2 environment – one product helps our customers quickly deploy, use and evaluate our latest business solutions in AWS and the other product, helps our customers easily manage and operate their IT systems landscape in AWS using our AWS cloud manager.

Our largest customer base is using AWS and the seamless integration that we provide with AWS via our built-in cloud adapter provides unique value to our customers and we have received very positive feedback from our customers on the ease of deployment and ease of use.
