AWS DataSync Makes Large-Scale Transfers Simple, Fast, and Reliable **Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Atharva P. | Cloud BI Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** July 18, 2026 **What do you like best about AWS DataSync?** What I like most about AWS DataSync is how it simplifies large-scale data transfers between on-premises storage, AWS storage services, and other cloud environments. It automates data movement, validates data integrity, optimizes network utilization, and supports incremental synchronization, which makes both migrations and ongoing data replication much easier to manage. It also removes the need to build and maintain custom scripts, while still delivering strong transfer performance and offering detailed monitoring throughout the process. **What do you dislike about AWS DataSync?** The initial setup involves deploying a DataSync agent for on-premises environments, and you need to ensure network connectivity is configured correctly. If you’re only doing very small or one-time transfers, simpler tools like the AWS CLI may be sufficient. **What problems is AWS DataSync solving and how is that benefiting you?** AWS DataSync addresses the challenge of transferring large datasets securely and efficiently. For example, during a cloud migration project, we used AWS DataSync to move several terabytes of application files from an on-premises NAS to Amazon S3. The service automatically validated the transferred data, synchronized only the files that changed after the initial migration, and significantly reduced overall migration time compared with manual copy processes. As a result, we minimized downtime, reduced operational effort, and improved the reliability of the migration. ### 2. It is quite affordable comparatively with other. **What do you dislike about AWS DataSync?** Use of $ in share names. At least allow escape characters when creating locations. Bit more logging and ability to test mount shares from within the appliance. I had to test mine by launching a separate instance in the same VPC **What problems is AWS DataSync solving and how is that benefiting you?** I had a DataSync appliance deployed as an EC2 instance in a VPC with no direct internet access. Deploying it in a VPC meant I could use our DirectConnect connection to access on-premises storage. I also had a VPC endpoint configured for DataSync service to avoid sending data through the public internet. Even though in this case it would have been AWS's own network. ### 3. With help of data sync, we can perform many actions like migrating our data that is the main use-case, retrieving data from amazon servers, with AWS trust it provides the best data protection. **What do you dislike about AWS DataSync?** It provides almost every thing that can be needed from the data sync service , so there is none dislike point from me. **What problems is AWS DataSync solving and how is that benefiting you?** We migrate our clients data every 4 months from our servers to Amazon Servers. ### 4. The mapping happens automatically and is efficient and fast. ### 5.
